2019 was a big year for movies about classism. The most popular one out of the lot was Parasite, which not only talked about the massive economic chasm that exists between the upper and the lower classes but also highlighted how it leads to a lack of class solidarity between the lower classes. Knives Out was a pointed commentary on how the wealthy can’t even imagine sharing their property and riches with the child of an immigrant, even though, morally and ethically speaking, the latter had more claim on their inheritance than the former. Exclusive: Keeley Hawes and key cast are on board Miss Austen Returns, a follow-up to Masterpiece period drama Miss Austen, and which is in the works from Bonnie Productions.

Miss Austen was adapted from Gill Hornby’s novel of the same name. Christine Langan, whose Bonnie Productions made the series, tells Deadline that Hornby’s recently published follow-up, ‘The Elopement’, forms the spine of a new series Bonnie is working up with the title Miss Austen Returns.

Miss Austen writer Andrea Gibb is currently penning scripts. As with the earlier series, the show is expected to be a co-production with Masterpiece in association with Federation Stories and the BBC, which showed the first series in the UK.

Beating Netflix’s (entirely unnecessary) remake of “Pride and Prejudice,” the BBC’s spinoff “The Other Bennet Sister” and French rom-com “Jane Austen Wrecked My Life” to the proverbial punch, the 250th birthday celebrations of arguably Britain’s most cherished novelist begins with a four-part drama focusing on her elder sister.

For many literary scholars, Cassandra Austen is a villainess of Miss Norris-esque proportions. After all, her deliberate burning of her sibling’s vast personal correspondence — only 160 of her approximately 3,000 letters are still intact — largely thwarted any attempt to further understand the famously elusive author. However, “Miss Austen,” itself based on Gill Hornby’s same-named piece of historical fiction, does its best to exonerate her reputation as a cultural vandal.

Well, in 2020, Arrow aired its last season, but the Arrowverse continued well into other spin-offs and shows. Projects like Supergirl, The Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow fared quite well on the CW.

For more than a decade, The CW's Arrowverse was a pillar of superhero storytelling. While the DC Extended Universe was struggling on the big screen in the 2010s, shows like "Arrow" and "The Flash" were thriving on television. So much so, in fact, that spin-offs started happening. "Supergirl," for example, was brought over from CBS, while "Superman & Lois" would eventually become a thing as well. But not all of the planned shows made it to air. Such was the case with "Green Arrow & The Canaries," which aired as a backdoor pilot in 2020.

The Batman villain Harley Quinn made her debut on the "Batman: The Animated Series" episodes "Joker's Favor", where she was voiced by actress Arleen Sorkin. The character was envisioned as a clown-like moll for the Joker, and was given a ditzy personality and a broad Noo Yawk accent. She proved to be so popular that she was eventually incorporated into Batman comic books, and soon grew to have titles of her own. Over the years, Harley Quinn has appeared in multiple TV shows and movies, most recently played in live-action by Lady Gaga in "Joker: Folie à Deux." 

Fun trivia: Harley Quinn was actually preceded by a very, very similar character called Prank (Corinne Bohrer), a clown-like moll to a very Joker-like villain named the Trickster (Mark Hamill) on a 1991 episode of "The Flash." Whether or not the makers of "Batman: The Animated Series" were aware of Prank is a matter of speculation.

Period piece TV show viewers are going to love what PBS Masterpiece and the BBC have in store: a four part new series titled Miss Austen!

This Wednesday, November 27, award-winning writer Tom King and artist Ryan Sook place Black Canary in the match of the millennium in the new six-issue series, Black Canary: Best of the Best.

In that, the superhero will go one-on-one with the villainous Lady Shiva to decide who is truly the, well, best of the best. There's much more to the story than that, of course, with the in-ring action - that's right, this is no normal superhero battle - juxtaposed with flashbacks chronicling the original Black Canary's story and Dinah being trained for this fight by her mother.

How would you feel about Gl being rebooted as a movie? I would love it. There is the selfish reason that I would get to see and work with my wonderful friends on the show. There is also the knowledge of the joy that would bring to long-time viewers. People rarely understand the unique aspect of these long-running series. They provided a touch point between generations.

Justice League Unlimited distinguishes itself from the series that came before it, Justice League, in a number of ways. Most episodes are only a single part; each season has an ongoing story arc, and the cast is significantly larger. Rather than just starring the seven League members from the previous series, it highlights an abundance of lesser-known heroes.

Justice League Unlimited massively expands the cast of the Dcau and features dozens of incredible characters. Superman, Batman, and the rest of the founders still make ample appearances, but Green Arrow, Supergirl, The Question, and more are equally important.
