Here’s the show’s logline: Miss Austen, based on Gill Hornby’s acclaimed novel, takes a real-life literary mystery – Cassandra Austen (Hawes) burning her sister Jane’s letters – and reimagines it as a fascinating, heartbreaking story of love, sacrifice, and loss. Max Irons, Phyllis Logan, and Kevin McNally also star.

The show will premiere for US viewers on Sunday (May 4) at 9pm Et on PBS. If you’re in the UK, the show will air on the BBC on Sunday (February 2).

This Wednesday, November 27, award-winning writer Tom King and artist Ryan Sook place Black Canary in the match of the millennium in the new six-issue series, Black Canary: Best of the Best.

In that, the superhero will go one-on-one with the villainous Lady Shiva to decide who is truly the, well, best of the best. There's much more to the story than that, of course, with the in-ring action - that's right, this is no normal superhero battle - juxtaposed with flashbacks chronicling the original Black Canary's story and Dinah being trained for this fight by her mother.

Tom King and artist Ryan Sook are tackling the comic and, as we're sure you'll agree, this sounds like it would make one heck of a movie. Given King's involvement in the Dcu - he's currently working on HBO's Lanterns - we can't discount the possibility that will eventually happen.

Tate Taylor might be the male version of Palm Royale’s Maxine Dellacorte-Simmons.

The executive producer and director behind the Kristen Wiig-starring comedy had his own experience trying to get into an exclusive Palm Beach club during pre-production on the Apple TV+ series. And just like the Tennessee debutante found out in the season premiere, wealthy Florida socialites don’t take too kindly to trespassers.

“I snuck in a side door like Maxine, got a great glimpse of the club, was spotted by security, and was kicked out. So I left Palm Beach feeling like a loser and trash,” Taylor recalls to The Hollywood Reporter in the conversation below. “I said, ‘Okay, this is a very real place.'”

“It’s so cool to think about how far we’ve come as women and that we have so many options today, but 1969 isn’t that long ago,” says Leslie Bibb, who stars in the Kristen Wiig-starring comedy as Dinah, a woman desperate to maintain her wealthy status after marrying for money rather than love. “It’s not that far back that women’s rights weren’t an issue.”

“We shot episode one and two together with Tate Taylor directing, and it was back-to-back balls. Then we got to episode four and there was another one, and then we got to episode six and there was another one, and we’re like, ‘Oh my God, we’re doing Palm Beach Bridgerton,’” production designer Jon Carlos tells The Hollywood Reporter. “We realized we really have to up the ante on every single one of these parties. They have to be insane and then the next one has to be even more insane.”

Apple TV+’s Palm Royale may be set in the late 1960s, but its greatest pleasures seem tailor-made for the age of the internet. Every shot of a socialite smirking over the rim of a cocktail glass plays like the perfect reaction Gif. The bitchy bon mots might as well be engineered for portioning into TikTok-sized soundbites, the outrageous plot twists for drawing gasps in the group chat. And the aesthetic — oh, the aesthetic! In a repudiation of the “quiet luxury” greige, this vision of America’s elite is awash in shimmering jewel tones and Lilly Pulitzer brights. You could build entire mood boards around the hippie-chic bookstore or the baroque mansion. I myself lost a good 20 minutes Googling between episodes for cat-eye sunglasses just like the ones featured on Maxine (Kristen Wiig).

But the eye-popping style is as good as the show gets; the fun ends where the surface does.
