Sailor Moon's Forgotten Show Is Making a Rare Return to TV After 20 Years
Image
For many fans, Sailor Moon brings to mind the iconic 1990s anime or the original manga by Naoko Takeuchi. But in 2003, the franchise took a surprising leap into live action with Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, a lesser-known TV drama that adapted the beloved magical-girl story into a tokusatsu-style format. Now, after two decades off the air, this long-lost gem is making a rare return.

According to the official Sailor Moon website, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon will begin airing weekly reruns on Japan’s Toei Channel starting July 4. Episodes will be broadcast every Friday and Saturday, marking the first time this series has returned to Japanese TV since it concluded in 2004. For longtime fans, it is an unexpected reunion with a cult classic.

In 2003, Toei brought the Sailor Moon franchise to life as an official live-action TV series. While the drama is relatively obscure compared to the original manga and anime, particularly overseas, it's now set to receive a new broadcast slate.

According to the official Sailor Moon website, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon (2003) is scheduled to air weekly on Toei Channel in Japan starting Friday, July 4 (Jst). Reruns of the 49+ episode series are slated to air every Friday from 5-6 p.m. and every Saturday from 8-9 a.m. This information was later confirmed by Sailor Moon's official Japanese X (formerly Twitter) page in a post that also spotlights the series' live-action cast. July 4 will mark the show's first return to domestic broadcast since the finale's airing in September 2004.
