Live-Action 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Recasts Hakoda With 'Law & Order: Svu' Star
Image
Netflix has announced its first recast for the live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Law & Order: Special Victims Unit star Adam Beach will replace Joel Montgrand as the Southern Water Tribe's Chieftain, Hakoda, and the father of Sokka (Ian Ousley) and Katara (Kiawentiio). The actor will make his Avatar debut in Season 3, which is currently in production.

Before Netflix's Avatar series was released, Beach was a fan-favorite choice for playing Hakoda. Aside from his work on Law & Order, Beach is known for his roles in Cowboys & Aliens, Windtalkers, and Flags of Our Fathers. He began his acting career in 1990 and quickly made an impression, earning three "Best Actor" awards across major festivals, including the 1995 American Indian Film Festival, First Americans in the Arts Awards, and the 1998 San Diego World Film Festival. In 2009, his performance in Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor.

Adam Beach Joins ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ As Hakoda For Season 3
Image
Exclusive: Adam Beach has landed the role of Hakoda in the third season of Netflix’s live-action series Avatar: The Last Airbender, sources close to production tell Deadline. Hakoda is the father of Sokka (Ian Ousley) and Katara (Kiawentiio), two main characters in the story.

Fans of the franchise have long campaigned for Beach to play the character, and it appears the suggestion was taken to heart. Netflix declined to comment for this story.

The streaming series is a live-action adaptation of the popular Nickelodeon animated series. It follows the young “Avatar,” Aang (Gordon Cormier), who must master all four elemental powers—air, water, fire, and earth—to restore balance to the world threatened by the terrifying Fire Nation.

Beach joins the cast, which also includes Dallas Liu, Elizabeth Yu, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, Daniel Dae Kim, Momona Tamada, and Thalia Tran; and Season 2 additions: Miya Cech,...

Avatar: The Last Airbender adds Severance star to season 2, goes ahead with season 3
Image
Netflix is moving full speed ahead with its live-action remake of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Not only have they wrapped on season 2, but they're already moving on season 3, as revealed in this cute little video:

The first season dropped in early 2024 and the second probably won't air until early 2026, or maybe late this year. But it's good to see that Netflix is getting a move on. Season 3 will mark the end of the show, so hopefully the wait between seasons 2 and 3 will be bearable. At a time when waits between seasons of big shows like this are getting longer and longer, it's good to see a studio be proactive.

The show is also staffing up. Season 2 will feature the returns of cast members Gordon Cormier (Aang), Kiawentiio (Katara), Ian Ousley (Sokka), Dallas Liu (Zuko), Elizabeth Yu (Azula), Paul Sun-Hyung Lee (Iroh), Daniel Dae Kim (Ozai), Momona Tamada (Ty Lee) and...

Wrapped and ready: What to expect from Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2
Image
There is only one issue with Netflix's live-action series Avatar: The Last Airbender. The name might confuse some who are not already in the know. Is this a take on Avatar? No. Is this a take on an M. Night Shyamalan movie? Also, no.

The series is a take on the classic animated series, but something about having real humans involved adds an element of fun. Can the characters still bend one of the four classical elements—fire, water, air, and earth? Yep, but it somehow seems more real in live-action.

The first season of the Netflix show aired in February 2024. Two months later, we knew there would be more seasons. The second season just wrapped production, but production on Season 3 is already underway.

Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 production has wrapped

The plot for Season 2 is not known. The creators want it to be kept secret, which makes sense.

From The White Lotus to The Pitt, Nepo Babies Are Proving Their Worth
Image
Once upon a time, the phrase “nepo baby” was seen as derogatory.

Coined by combining the words “nepotism” and “baby,” it means the subject is a child of influential people in an industry and has (allegedly) benefited from these connections.

Nepo babies who wanted to go into the same field as their parents would go to great lengths to hide their privilege. Some would even change their names to avoid outing themselves.

(Fabio Lovino/HBO)

The name is still not a term of endearment to some extent, but a current crop of nepo babies is challenging this stigma.

The actors in this list have proven that being the child of a talented performer should not be used as a metric to discount someone, and everyone should be judged by their work.

This list focuses on their work on television, but some have ventured beyond the medium and are killing it in music and film.

All the ‘Nepo Babies’ on ‘The Pitt’ and Their Famous Parents
Image
The talented cast of “The Pitt” includes a number of actors whose parents are also in the business. While Taylor Dearden and Fiona Dourif might, technically be considered “nepo babies,” they have more than proven themselves to be as hardworking as their emergency room characters in the hit drama on HBO’s Max.

Here is who’s related to who and where else you might have seen them before this. Some, like Dourif and Isa Briones, who plays Trinity Santos, have even acted alongside their famous family members.

Taylor Dearden

The 32-year-old actress, who plays resident Mel King on the series, is the daughter of “Breaking Bad” star Bryan Cranston and actress Robin Dearden, whose TV credits include appearances on “Murder, She Wrote,” and the soap opera “Generations.” She previously starred on Netflix’s “American Vandal,” MTV’s “Sweet/Vicious” and Apple’s “For All Mankind.”

The Star Trek actor with the most interesting name ever is...
Image
The Star Trek franchise has welcomed hundreds of guest stars, perhaps even 1,000 or more, since The Original Series debuted in 1966. And some of those guest actors and actresses have had exotic names. Redshirts Always Die went in search of the single most interesting name of the past nearly 60 years of Star Trek television. We skipped the feature films (including Section 31), video games, online games, unofficial productions, Short Treks, etc., and focused on examining the cast lists of The Original Series, The Animated Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Enterprise, Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks, and Prodigy.

Among the names that caught our eye: Thalmus Rasulala, Clement von Franckenstein, Brian Demonbreun, Maurishka, Bumper Robinson, Symba, Olia Kashevarova, Somkele Ilyamah-Idhalama, Calyx Passailaigue, Xavier X. Sotelo, Ito Aghayere, Jon Jon Briones (the father of Picard co-star Isa Briones), and Menik Gooneratne. Some of these actors hail (or hailed) from countries other than the United States,...

The late, great Star Trek veteran Tony Todd returns to the screen one last time in Final Destination Bloodlines
Image
Death claims all of us eventually, even the man who played Death -- better known as William Bludworth -- in the Final Destination horror film franchise. That man, of course, was the genre legend Tony Todd, a prolific character actor beloved by fright fans and science-fiction aficionados for his roles as Death/Bludworth in the Final Destination films, The Candyman in the Candyman films, and multiple roles in the Star Trek universe, including Kurn, Worf’s brother in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Fortunately, before his death on November 6, 2024, at the age of 69, Todd completed several upcoming projects, including Final Destination Bloodlines, which will be released in theaters by Warner Bros. on May 16. Fans of the franchise weren’t sure if Todd actually worked on the project, so his appearance was deemed “rumored” by many fans and also the Internet Movie Database. The official trailer,...

The Pitt Star Isa Briones Played Multiple Star Trek Characters Before Dr. Santos
Image
Before she was hunting for patients to cut up, threatening sexual predators, and exposing medicine-stealing doctors on Max's high-octane medical drama "The Pitt," the actor behind certified wild child Dr. Santos had a hugely important role -- or, rather, four roles -- in the "Star Trek" universe.

Isa Briones has had a major moment with "The Pitt," playing one of the most love-her-or-hate-her characters on the new, fantastic, and Stephen King-approved HBO series. Her Dr. Trinity Santos is one of a batch of interns trying to get through their first day on the job in the emergency medical department of a Pittsburgh hospital, but where the other young doctors-in-training are nervous or hesitant, she's brash and ambitious.

It's hard not to empathize with Santos, but it's also difficult not to scream at the television when she makes truly mind-boggling decisions. Briones plays her character's many shades well, and you'd...

‘The Last Voyage of the Demeter’ Blu-ray Review
Image
Stars: Corey Hawkins, Aisling Franciosi, Liam Cunningham, David Dastmalchian, Chris Walley, Jon Jon Briones, Stefan Kapicic, Martin Furulund, Nikolai Nikolaeff, Javier Botet | Written by Bragi F. Schut, Zak Olkewicz | Directed by André Øvredal

The Last Voyage of the Demeter is a chilling horror film that delivers a uniquely atmospheric take on the classic Dracula mythos. Directed by André Øvredal, the movie adapts a single chapter from Bram Stoker’s Dracula—the doomed voyage of the Demeter, a Russian schooner transporting a mysterious cargo from Carpathia to England. This narrative decision to focus on a small portion of the novel allows the film to dive deep into the slow-building dread and claustrophobia of being trapped at sea with an unspeakable horror.

The film begins with the Demeter’s crew discovering that they have been tasked with transporting a set of crates, each filled with soil from Transylvania. They are unaware that...

Image
We're at the end of 2024, and you know what that means. It's time to look back at what all happened this year. We'll start off by saying that it's been a rollercoaster of a year for many of the streaming services, especially Netflix. While there were many renewals from the streamer, there were also some cancellations.

This year, the streaming powerhouse pulled the plug on 17 of its original series, and there's even a chance there will be more cancellations since 2024 isn't quite over yet. Obviously, a show getting canceled is never a good thing, and it sucks for the people who were hoping for additional installments. However, there's one Netflix show that got the boot this year that we're not exactly sad about.

In this article, we shared all the Netflix show cancellations from this year as well as discussed why we weren't necessarily hurt by one of the shows being axed.

Robert Beltran was offered the part of Seven of Nine's husband in Star Trek: Picard
Image
When Star Trek: Voyager was nearing the end, the producers introduced a romance between Robert Beltran's Chakotay and Jeri Ryan's Seven of Nine. The fans didn't see that one coming as there'd not previously been any type of chemistry between the two characters, and the relationship just didn't make sense. Nevertheless, Voyager ended with the pair still a couple as far as we knew.

Before the beginning of the second season of Star Trek: Picard, Beltran was contacted about a part in the first two episodes of the season, which were "Penance" and "Assmiliation." [Via Slashfilm] In those two episodes, Admiral Picard and his crew are sent to an alternate timeline by Q [John de Lancie] where Earth is an evil empire ruled over by a fascist dictator and her husband. Ryan's character was the president of this evil Earth, and Beltran was offered the role of her husband,...

Robert Beltran Refused To Return As Chakotay For This Star Trek: Picard Storyline
Image
Although "Star Trek: Voyager" concluded in 2001, multiple characters from the series have returned throughout the franchise at large to remind Trekkies that they all still exist and are still going about their Starfleet careers. Both Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) and Tuvok (Tim Russ) appeared on "Star Trek: Picard," with the former playing a regular role on the series. The reference-heavy "Star Trek: Lower Decks" makes "Voyager" references all the time, and even had an episode set on board the U.S.S. Voyager.

Most notably, Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) not only had a cameo in the 2002 film "Star Trek: Nemesis," but a holographic version of the character played a large role in the animated series "Star Trek: Prodigy." That same show also featured the real-life Janeway, the Doctor (Robert Picardo), as well as a subplot involving Chakotay (Robert Beltran), the captain of the experimental ship the U.S.S.

Frightfest 2024: ‘The Last Voyage of the Demeter’ Review
