Daybreakers (2009)
The Spierig brothers are set to helm a new re-imagining of the headless horseman, titled Headless
Daybreakers (2009)
Deadline is reporting that the filmmaking duo behind Daybreakers, Jigsaw and Winchester will be adapting the headless horseman mythology for a contemporary setting for their new film Headless. The duo, Michael and Peter Spierig – a.k.a. The Spierig Brothers — are said to be paying nods to Mad Max and The Terminator in this new re-imagining, with the production even taking place in Australia, where the Mad Max movies were produced.

The synopsis reads, “A rudderless hitchhiker and a driven woman avenging her family’s death must stop a motorcycle-riding semi-immortal ghoul that feeds off the carnage it causes on desert highways by decapitating it and getting its head far enough away, long enough, from its relentlessly pursuant still-living body.” The film is written by Shane Armstrong (The Contents) and S.P. Krause (The Contents). The film is set to be produced by industry vet Chris Brown (Daybreakers) for his Picture in Paradise label,...

2022 Thriller 'Fall' Has Become a Top 10 Hit on Streaming
Image
Fall, the psychological horror thriller starring Shazam!'s Grace Caroline Currey and the Beautiful movie series' star Virginia Gardner, is a streaming hit. The film has stayed among the most watched films on Hulu, and it shows no signs of stopping its climb to the top. Something pretty ironic, considering the film's thrilling plot.

Currently sitting in the fifth spot on Hulu's Top 10 Movies, Fall was directed by Scott Mann, a relatively unknown director who co-wrote it with Jonathan Frank. It stars Currey and Gardner alongside The Walking Dead's Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Scream's Mason Gooding, as well as Darrell Dennis and Jasper Cole in secondary roles. Fall follows two friends, Becky and Shiloh, who find themselves stuck at the top of a 2,000-foot-tall rusty broadcasting tower, and they can't find a way to communicate with someone or climb down.

Made for only $3 million, the film was a box office hit,...

Fall True Story & Real-Life Inspiration Revealed
Image
Fall is a gripping movie with intense cinematography and a thrilling premise that keeps audiences on the edge of their seats. While the story is fictional, the tower that Becky and Hunter climb in the film is a real location, adding authenticity to the narrative. The filmmakers found the perfect tower, the Kxtv Tower in Walnut Grove, California, to bring the story to life and create a sense of fear and danger for the characters.

Fall tells the story of two young girls who attempt to climb an old TV tower, and while the concept may initially seem far-fetched, the films narrative is actually based on a real location that inspired the story. Fall follows Becky and Hunter, two best friends who are attempting to overcome their fears and take control of their own lives by pushing the limits of what they can do. After climbing 2,000 feet to the top of an abandoned TV tower,...

A year later, Becky is still deep in depression and trauma, so Hunter decides that the only thing that will snap her out of it is to climb to the top of the 2,000 foot B67 TV tower — an abandoned communication tower located in the middle of the California desert.

A handful of smaller films will start to test audience enthusiasm for movie theaters without big tentpoles. It’s been a rocky summer for specialty releases, and an uphill climb as arthouses emerge from Covid jitters with franchise films sucking up oxygen and screens. But superheroes are on hiatus.

“There isn’t giant competition from tentpoles,” said Howard Cohen, co-president of Roadside Attractions. “On balance, it’s good. Obviously, if you have Top Gun, it sucks the air out of the marketplace. It’s still better — for the specialty market — to have three or four indies than one giant release. Exhibitors are antsy about the sudden dearth of new wide releases this month and next, but they’ve also been asking for more box office breadth.

“We have seen signs of life in our sector,...

‘Fall’ Review – Daunting Heights and Acrophobic Thrills Hardly Distract from Copycat Story
Image
Survival horror takes aim at acrophobia with Lionsgate’s adrenaline-seeking Fall. Two women trapped at the peak of a 2,000-foot radio tower in the middle of nowhere and with no cell signal means a series of obstacles to contend with beyond vertigo-inducing heights. While the lean, mean thriller does offer bursts of intense action and acrophobic chills, Fall crashes headfirst into a film we’ve already seen before, nearly beat for beat.

Best friends Becky (Grace Caroline Currey) and Hunter (Virginia Gardner), along with Becky’s husband (Mason Gooding), live to push their limits and chase extreme adrenaline rushes. However, one misstep on a mountain climb sends Becky into a deep depressive state that means retreating from friends, family, and her fearless ways. To shake her out of it, Hunter talks Becky into accompanying her on a bucket list excursion, scaling one of the world’s tallest structures. Becky and...

Fall Review: A Psychologically Reductive Single-Location Thriller
Mason Gooding
It’s been a year since Dan Connor (Mason Gooding) fell to his death while rock climbing with his wife Becky (Grace Caroline Currey) and her best friend Hunter (Virginia Gardner). The latter was free-climbing and mocking the other two for being slow as they detached and reattached their ropes with every maneuver to create a semblance of safety. Rather than be ironic that Dan is the one who dies, however, the choice is purely driven by narrative and suspense. Whereas Hunter slipping would just be game over, he gets to hang and swing for a bit while desperately trying to grab a handhold and relieve the pressure put upon the nut/hex/chock holding his rope in place. We get a beat to hope for the best before he disappears.

As can happen after a tragic accident, Becky has all but disappeared herself. She hasn’t climbed since the...

Grace Caroline Currey and Virginia Gardner in Fall (2022)
‘Fall’ Film Review: Heights-Driven Thriller Successfully Maintains Its Grip
Grace Caroline Currey and Virginia Gardner in Fall (2022)
Like a provisions-packed knapsack, a good deal of emotional backstory gets shoved into the first half-hour of “Fall” before it traps two female climbers 2,000 feet above the ground in a remote stretch of desert for the rest of its running time.

Will that friendship be tested? Of course. But the true signal that co-writer (with Jonathan Frank) and director Scott Mann has his thrill-hungry audience’s needs in mind is that before adventuring besties Becky and Hunter can even get to the base of the TV tower they intend to scale, they lock eyes with a carcass-gnawing vulture, who gets a righteously gnarly, ominous close-up.

In other words, you’re in good talons with “Fall,” a better-than-average B-movie corker that’s almost like a corrective these days to the behemoths that spend hundreds of millions of dollars on mayhem only to bludgeon us with exhilaration-free, numbingly digitized peril. If you...

Sony, FX, Lifetime Execs Talk Evolving Inclusion Programs
Although there have been strides made toward inclusion both in front of and behind the camera — from the guest actor categories at the 2018 Emmys being won by all African-American actors to Latina speaking roles hitting a historic high during the last television season — there is still much room to grow.

“I find it ironic and sort of troubling that a transgender person isn’t considered diverse,” Jonathan Frank, executive vice president, current programming and production at FX Networks said at an Hrts diversity spotlight event Wednesday. “A female-to-male transition is now considered a man [but] that person, I’m sure, comes across a million challenges. … I consider it a diversity hire because I know that person came through a million challenges in his life and was probably denied opportunities.”

To date, most of the diversity programs set up across networks and studios, including Sony Pictures Entertainment’s diverse directors program, which...

‘Final Score’ Review
Stars: Dave Bautista, Pierce Brosnan, Ray Stevenson, Amit Shah, Martyn Ford, Kamil Lemieszewski, Ralph Brown, Lara Peake, Lucy Gaskell, Alexandra Dinu | Written by Jonathan Frank | Directed by Scott Mann

Dave Bautista’s solo action career continues its hot streak (see also: Bushwick) with Final Score, a ludicrous-but-fun Die Hard homage that sees the big man taking on terrorists at a football match in London. The film might have its flaws, but it delivers enough action-packed entertainment to ensure Bautista won’t be facing relegation anytime soon.

As established – albeit to outlandish extremes – in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, Bautista’s screen persona is essentially strong-but-sensitive, and he sticks closely to that template for his portrayal of Us military specialist Michael Knox, who arrives in London to visit the widow (Lucy Gaskell) and teenage daughter of his fellow soldier and best friend, who’s recently been killed in action.
