‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’ Review: Starz Prequel Is a Richly Rendered, Delectably Romantic Treat
In the Netflix dramedy Too Much, a brokenhearted American, Jess, makes the move across the pond, inspired in part by daydreams of stately castles, rolling green hills and dashing gentlemen professing their ardent admiration. She finds, instead, a scruffy musician in a dirty bathroom stall. The connection they strike up may not be the stuff fairy tales are made of, but it’s all the sweeter for being so raw and messy and real.
Or … maybe not. Starz’s latest Diana Gabaldon-based saga, Outlander: Blood of My Blood, is precisely the sort of thing that inspires moonstruck fantasies like Jess’ in the first place, filled as it is with scenic vistas, time-traveling contrivances and prettily suffering soulmates overcoming impossible odds. It’s also a reminder of how incomparably potent such a story can be when it’s done just right. Richly imagined, audaciously epic and, above all, unabashedly and deliriously romantic,...

While Outlander once felt like a potential fantasy romance takeover for Starz, the series slowly faded from picking up nominations from award bodies. While the series was never quite the awards magnet many hoped it would be for the network, it has gained an extremely strong following. It’s no surprise that a prequel series, Outlander: Blood of My Blood, received the green light to go into a full series. As the original series prepares to end in 2026, a new series looking to pave a future for the franchise kicks off with gorgeous craftwork and strong performances. While it still features some of Outlander‘s flaws and a built-in audience, Starz has another hit on its hands.
Outlander: Blood of My Blood Plot
The prequel series follows two timelines and intertwined stories across the centuries. After the death of Red Jacob MacKenzie (Peter Mullan), the power structures in the Scottish Highlands are changing.

There’s no shortage of boxing dramas in Hollywood, but only one features Orlando Bloom pushing himself beyond the limit. At the same time, John Tuturro makes Burgess Meredith’s Mickey from Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky look like a pussy cat in the relentlessly intense trailer for The Cut.
Anthropoid and Metro Manila director Sean Ellis directs The Cut from a screenplay by Justin Bull, based on a story by Mark Lane. The official synopsis for The Cut reads: After a career-ending defeat, a former champion trains for redemption – but as obsession takes hold and reality unravels, he may be spiraling into something far more terrifying.
Floating like a butterfly into theaters on September 5, 2025, The Cut stars Orlando Bloom, John Turturro, and Caitríona Balfe.
In the trailer for The Cut, Orlando Bloom’s boxer character has six days to gain 26 pounds if he wants to qualify for an upcoming title fight.

Fans of Outlander got some big news at San Diego Comic-Con, and it might not be what they wanted to hear. During the panel for the show’s final season, the first footage from Season 8 was shown, and it included a shocking moment that has everyone talking.
In the clip, Jamie Fraser (played by Sam Heughan) reads a line from a book written by Frank Randall, Claire’s first husband. The line says: “War is coming to the backcountry, and James Fraser dies in it.” It’s a chilling moment that suggests Jamie may not survive the series finale.
This moment was part of the sneak peek shown in Hall H at Comic-Con on Friday. The panel revealed that Outlander Season 8 will arrive in early 2026. That gives fans time to prepare for what might be a heartbreaking ending to Jamie and Claire’s long journey.

McTavish, who played Dougal MacKenzie in multiple seasons of the original series, stood up during the Q&a portion of Outlander: Blood of My Blood. McTavish asked Sam Retford, the actor who will play the younger version of his character, a question to close the event.
“Hello, I’m Graham, and I have a question for Sam. First of all, congratulations on the wig and the beard. The fact that you wear it out in public is really, really, really tremendous,” McTavish touted as the crowd went wild.
He continued, “I haven’t seen any of the show yet, but I’m really looking forward to it. But I wanted to ask you, how did you dive into the soft, sensitive side of Dougal? Thank you for your time. I love your work.”

‘Outlander’ At Comic-Con: Starz Drops First Look At 8th & Final Season; Droughtlander To End In 2026
Outlander fans took over San Diego Comic-Con’s Hall H on Friday, when series executive producers Matthew B. Roberts, Maril Davis and Sam Heughan, who also stars, took the stage. They were joined by co-stars Sophie Skelton (Brianna MacKenzie) and Richard Rankin (Roger MacKenzie).
Starz dropped a teaser trailer going back in time to where it all began. However, and with no surprise, Droughtlander will continue until early 2026. Following the Season 7 finale cliffhanger, the video teases Jamie Fraser’s (Heughan) possible fate.
Unfortunately, Caitríona Balfe, who has played Claire Fraser since the show’s inception, was unable to attend the panel as she’s in production on a new project. She did pre-record a personal video message that sent fans into a roar of applause.

That’s the warning Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) reads in Frank Randall’s (Tobias Menzies) book; Frank is Claire Randall/Fraser’s (Catriona Balfe) first husband. It sounds like Outlander is about to end with a bang (and possibly to the back of Jamie’s dome).

After what has felt like an eternity for Outlander fans in the U.S., Netflix has finally unveiled the long-awaited release date for season 7, part 1, and it's time to get excited. While international viewers may have already binged these episodes, U.S. audiences have been left waiting in true Droughtlander fashion for the new season to come to Netflix. For two whole years, to be exact.
Thankfully, that wait is almost over. Netflix has confirmed exactly when the next chapter of Claire and Jamie’s journey will arrive, and while it’s good news for now, there’s a bittersweet twist. The second half of season 7, and the final season beyond that, will require even more patience.
Drum roll, please! You can mark your calendar for Monday, Aug. 11, 2025, because that's when Outlander season 7 part 1 is slated to make its way to Netflix in the U.S. It's not exactly clear...

In the windswept Scottish Highlands, laughter comes from behind a stand of twisted trees along a stone wall. The source of the hilarity: Hermione Corfield and Jeremy Irvine, who’ve just finished shooting a scene from the premiere of Outlander: Blood of My Blood that’s too steamy for a set visitor’s eyes. They play the parents of Outlander heroine/accidental time traveler Claire (Caitríona Balfe), and their story parallels that of the equally fiery mother and father of Claire’s soulmate, 18th-century Highlander Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan). Turns out, the central couple in the original global hit based on Diana Gabaldon‘s bestselling novels have plenty of lust woven into their DNA. As young marrieds, brainy suffragette Julia Moriston (Corfield) and lawyer Henry Beauchamp (Irvine), a war veteran, are on a driving holiday and pull over for a tumble. So, are the actors nervous about starring in the follow-up to a beloved,...

The expansion of time travel is almost upon us as the prequel series, Outlander: Blood of my Blood, arrives on Starz on August 8. While the flagship series follows one epic love story, the spin-off will go one further, chronicling the parallel love stories of Jamie’s parents, Ellen MacKenzie (played by Harriet Slater) and Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy), and Claire’s folks, Julia Moriston (Hermione Corfield) and Henry Beauchamp (Jeremy Irvine). The upcoming series' most recent trailer reveals an unexpected plot twist to the story. We find out that although Julia and Henry begin their story in their time with World War I raging, they somehow both end up in 18th-century Scotland. Basically, they find themselves in the time period of the Scots, Ellen and Brian.
In the original series, Julia and Henry's daughter, Claire Beauchamp (Caitríona Balfe), finds herself traveling back through time and arriving in 18th-century Scotland. There...

We’re so glad that Starz decided to reveal the giant twist at the heart of Outlander‘s upcoming spinoff, Blood of My Blood, before the series’ premiere… because it means we can finally talk about a very intriguing point the show’s cast made during a recent stop by TVLine’s offices.
The prequel series follows the parallel love stories of Jamie’s parents, Scots Ellen MacKenzie (played by Pennyworth‘s Harriet Slater) and Brian Fraser (Condor’s Nest‘s Jamie Roy), and Claire’s folks, Brits Julia Moriston (We Hunt Together‘s Hermione Corfield) and Henry Beauchamp (Treadstone‘s...

Okay, the newly-debuted opening title credit sequence for the upcoming Outlander prequel series Blood of My Blood gave me chills. It looks absolutely stunning. We see the landscapes of the Scottish Highlands, a bonfire, and intimate moments between romantic partners, all intercut with the theme song's soft strings and Julie Fowlis's singing in both English and Gaelic.
Blood of My Blood is an upcoming historical romance series about the parents of Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and Claire Beauchamp (Caitríona Balfe). There will reportedly be a time-traveling element in the prequel, just like in the original. And while Outlander is based on Diana Gabaldon's books, this show draws from a few different elements.
Some of the plot is taken from the books that have already been published, but last November the author told TV Insider she had enough material in mind to write three (shorter) novels about Jamie's parents.

Rami Malek stars as a tech genius CIA agent gone rogue in The Amateur, a ridiculous, but nonetheless entertaining thriller that could easily have been titled Revenge of the Nerd. As such, it has its fair share of good moments, but it’s also not without its flaws.
Malek plays Charlie Heller, a vaguely on-the-spectrum CIA surveillance expert, whose life is brutally upended when his beloved wife Sarah (Rachel Brosnahan) is taken hostage and murdered by terrorists while on a business trip in London. When his CIA bosses (Holt McCallany and Danny Sapani) refuse to go after the people responsible, a vengeful Charlie blackmails them into giving him special ops training...

The third season of House of the Dragon can’t come soon enough, and we understand your frustration—but don’t worry, there are a lot of similar shows on HBO Max that you can binge-watch over the weekend to satiate your brutal and bloody medieval show fix.
Stories set during the Middle Ages have been popular for quite some time, but Game of Thrones and its prequel saga seemingly propelled this type of show to major popularity. We get the appeal of it—there’s nothing like seeing noble knights in shining armor or kings and queens in regal attire.
Since Season 3 of the hit spinoff series is still in production, why not check out these similarly themed shows?
1. Deadwood Ian McShane in Deadwood / Credits: HBO
While Deadwood is set in the 1870s in South Dakota, it shares a lot of dramatic elements with the House of the Dragon.

Rami Malek’s turn in the espionage thriller The Amateurgave action audiences plenty to chew on this year. Featuring a stacked cast including Rachel Brosnahan, Caitríona Balfe, and Laurence Fishburne, the film opened to mixed critical reception, earning a 61% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the audience recognized its quality, giving it a higher 88% approval rating. That admiration translated into box office success for the movie as The Amateuroutpaced early projections. The film's ending sequence left the audience with some burning questions, setting up a potential sequel, and now, director James Hawes has teased what might come next.
The Amateur sees Malek as Charles "Charlie" Heller, a brilliant CIA cryptographer whose life is upturned after the death of his wife in a terrorist attack in London. With no prior experience as a field operative, Charlie trades the desk for the murky waters of covert ops as he's hellbent on exacting revenge on those responsible.

Starz is keeping its Outlander franchise alive for another season.
The newly independent cable and streaming outlet has ordered a second season of Outlander: Blood of My Blood, a prequel to its long-running drama. The renewal for the Sony Pictures TV-produced series comes about six weeks before Blood of My Blood’s Aug. 8 series premiere; production on season two began Monday.
Blood of My Blood, which Starz ordered in conjunction with the final season of Outlander in early 2023, is a prequel — in both of its fictional world’s timelines — that follows the parents of the main series’ lead characters, Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and Claire Randall/Fraser (Caitríona Balfe). Ellen MacKenzie (Harriet Slater) and Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy) will become Jamie’s parents in 18th century Scotland, while in World War I-era Britain, Julia Moriston (Hermione Corfield) and Henry Beauchamp (Jeremy Irvine) are destined to be Claire’s mother and father.

Sometimes, when action thrillers are too good, fans can't help but ask for a sequel. When there's still more of the story to tell, there's a way to keep it going without overdoing it. Just look at the James Bond film series or Tom Cruise's Mission: Impossible; those have been going on for years and still do well at the box office. When you think of recent action spy thrillers that have the opportunity to become big, The Amateurshould come to mind. The 2025 film, starring Rami Malek, who also served as one of the producers, has an 88% Rotten Tomatoes audience score, and fans are waiting to hear news of a sequel. Director James Hawes provided an update, but it's not what fans expected.
The Amateur follows Charlie Heller (Rami Malek), a brilliant CIA decoder whose world crumbles when his wife, Sarah (Rachel Brosnahan), dies in a London terrorist attack.

For fans who’ve just experienced the pulse-pounding spy thriller The Amateur on digital platforms, the burning question is undoubtedly: what about a sequel for Charlie Heller? After all, the film, starring Rami Malek, Laurence Fishburne, Rachel Brosnahan, Caitríona Balfe, and Holt McCallany, certainly leaves us wanting more of its intricate spycraft and thrilling betrayals. Director James Hawes recently shed some light on the future of the franchise, and his answer might surprise you. In an insightful interview with The Playlist, Hawes revealed that despite the film’s compelling ending and its exploration of Charlie Heller’s transformation from cryptographer to rogue operative, sequel conversations have been, well, almost non-existent. Hawes shared a fascinating tidbit: that memorable parking lot scene with Henderson (Laurence Fishburne) – the one that even became the film’s poster,...
