First images of Liam Hemsworth filming The Witcher season 5 fight scenes
Image
The Witcher season 4 may be slated to come out sometime this year, but Netflix is wasting no time getting cracking on the follow-up. The team behind the series is already hard at work on the show's fifth and final season, even as we await an official release date for season 4. And now, some of the first pictures from filming have leaked onto the world wide web. They reveal an interesting fight scene ahead in season 5, as well as giving us our best look yet at some of Geralt's Hansa — aka his group of close traveling companions with whom he'll traverse the Continent in these final two seasons.

It should go without saying, but these will contain Spoilers for season 4 and 5 of The Witcher.

The Witcher star Graham McTavish promises "seamless transition" from Henry Cavill to Liam Hemsworth
Image
Netflix's monster-hunting fantasy show The Witcher is in the middle of a very interesting transition. The shows third season marked the final time that actor Henry Cavill will play lead character Geralt of Rivia; when The Witcher returns for season 4, it'll be Liam Hemsworth under the white wig. We're at a point in Andrzej Sapkowski's Witcher books where the narrative shifts focus away from Geralt and centers Princess Ciri (Freya Allan) for the back half of the saga as some very weird, multiversal meta elements rise to the forefront. It'll be very curious to see how fans react to these changes when The Witcher season 4 drops on Netflix.

One person who's not particularly concerned is Graham McTavish, who plays the Redanian spymaster Sigismund Dijkstra. McTavish is a seasoned actor who's appeared in tons of genre fare, including Outlander, House of the Dragon, The Hobbit movies, and even the...

Here’s When Alexa Havins Debuts As Lulu On General Hospital
Image
The anticipation for Lulu’s return on General Hospital is high. After a bomb destroyed the Floating Rib restaurant in 2020, Lulu — then played by Emme Rylan — ended up in a coma. Ever since, she has been in a long-term care facility. But the meds she was given took a toll on her liver. So, she underwent a risky transplant operation. The donor, Sam, died from a heart attack while in recovery, and Lulu’s mom, Laura, has been begging her daughter to emerge from her comatose state. Lulu’s return is imminent, and we now know when Alexa Havins will officially take on the role. And it’s just around the corner.

The Time Is Imminent

Because Sam (Kelly Monaco) died and the hospital wants to transfer Lulu back to the care facility, Laura has been at her daughter’s side begging for her to awaken so that Sam’s death would mean something.

10 Spinoffs Ways Darker Than The Movies & TV Shows They Were Based On
Image
The 21st century has been an era of sequels, reboots, and spinoffs. While these projects have saturated the market for many years, some are worth checking out. One of the reasons that a spinoff could find unexpected success without imitating the original movie or TV show is by incorporating darker and more intense storylines. Since a spinoff doesn't have the pressure and expectations that the original film or series might face, it can experiment with style and tone to exciting results. A good spinoff will root itself within the story's universe while working to stand alone as an individual project.

When many of the best legacy movie sequels differentiate themselves by going down a darker path, this could mean that more mature and adult themes will play a large part in the project. This makes sense, as when a TV show takes on a more serious tone, more emotional strife...

Doctor Who & Torchwood Actor Is Open To Characters Return After 15 Years (Despite Being Dead)
Image
Gareth David-Lloyd is open to returning to Doctor Who. Ianto's impact on Doctor Who remains strong, with a shrine dedicated to him and discussions ongoing. David-Lloyd has kept Ianto alive through audio dramas, giving hope for a potential return to TV.

Despite the character Ianto Jones giving his life in Torchwood's "Children of Earth" storyline in 2009, Gareth David-Lloyd (Ianto) is still open to returning to Doctor Who's main series. Making his debut in the Doctor Who spinoff season 1 in 2006, Ianto was a Cardiff-based Torchwood Three team member and began as the by-the-book, no-nonsense member of the group who would open up about his past and feelings towards leader Jack Harkness. Ianto also appeared in the Doctor Who season 4 finale "The Stolen Earth/Journey's End" to help defend Earth from the Daleks.

Fifteen years after Ianto gave his life to attempt to save the world in Torchwood: Children of Earth - Day Four,...

7 Best Sci-Fi Shows on Max Right Now
Westworld (2016)
The sci-fi genre has always been one of the most beloved among cinephiles as it gives us a new look at a particular technology or our world. There was a time when Max (formerly known as HBO Max) was the place for peak sci-fi shows but after taking off Westworld and Raised by Wolves from the service, and since then it has been lacking a bit regarding sci-fi shows. But still, we picked the seven best sci-fi shows that we could find on Max.

Avenue 5

Avenue 5 is a sci-fi dark comedy series created by Armando Iannucci. The Max series is set in the future and mostly in space and it follows the story of the crew and passengers on board the interplanetary cruise ship named Avenue 5. 10 TV Shows To Start Watching Today If You Want To Finish Before 2023 Ends
Image
New Year's is the perfect time to binge-watch shows, but choose ones that can be completed within the time frame. Look for captivating shows that are not necessarily holiday-themed to add variety to your watch list. Consider shows like Torchwood, God Friended Me, and Lie to Me, which have fewer episodes and are suitable for a binge-watch before the new year.

New Year's, the coziest time of the year, is nigh, and it is the season for bingeing favorite comfort shows as well as discovering new amazing series. Seeing as it is exactly 45 days until New Year's Day, it is important to choose a show that could easily be completed within this time frame. This means that starting Buffy the Vampire Slayer, House, M.D., or How I Met Your Mother with the intent of finishing them by January 1 would not be the wisest decision. Thankfully, there are plenty of...

“It’s Not A Promise”: Potential Torchwood Revival 12 Years Later Addressed By Doctor Who Showrunner
Image
Per creator Russell T. Davies, the Doctor Who spinoff Torchwood may have a chance of revival, but not anytime soon. Davies revealed during a Q&a that there are currently no plans for the Torchwood Institute to appear on Doctor Who. While it's not a promise, Davies expressed his love for Torchwood and said they will think about bringing it back in some capacity.

The possibility of a Torchwood revival has been addressed by its creator. The show was a spinoff from Doctor Who focusing on the exploits of the alien hunters at the Torchwood Institute, especially Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) and Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles). Though the show was never officially cancelled and continues as an audio drama, it went off the air in 2011 after four seasons.

Per Digital Spy, during a recent Q&a, creator Russell T. Davies - who has returned as the showrunner for Doctor Who...

Doctor Who: Jodie Whittaker’s Regeneration Stirs Durdle Door Controversy
Christopher Eccleston, Peter Capaldi, David Tennant, Matt Smith, and Jodie Whittaker in Doctor Who (2005)
Warning: Contains major spoilers for Doctor Who ‘The Power of the Doctor’

News is emerging that the owners of Durdle Door aren’t too happy about their historic landmark being the scene of the thirteenth Doctor’s regeneration in Doctor Who.

Over four million of us tuned in on Sunday night to watch Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor shockingly regenerate into David Tennant in the climax of her final episode, ‘The Power of the Doctor’. It was one of the most anticipated TV moments of the year, and – judging from the reactions on Twitter – the Whovians went wild, essentially becoming the personification of the ‘screaming, crying, throwing up’ meme.

Although many fans were possibly so beside themselves about Tennant’s return that they barely registered where the scene was filmed, this particularly scenic regeneration took place on top of the famous Durdle Door arch near Lulworth in Dorset. However, the owners...

‘Torchwood’ Star John Barrowman Touches Fan Nerves With Ianto Shrine Visit
Image
Actor John Barrowman, who portrayed Captain Jack Harkness on Torchwood, has set off a Twitter frenzy with a post depicting a visit to a show landmark in Cardiff, Wales.

Barrowman posted a selfie in front of a shrine to the show’s Ianto Jones, who was Capt. Jack’s lover on the show and tragically died in his arms in a mini-series episode, Children of Earth.

On Friday, Barrowman paid an incognito visit to the impromptu shrine set up to honor the Ianto character in Cardiff, a site near where the series was filmed. The shrine is still very popular with fans 11 years after the television series death.

Torchwood, a Doctor Who spin-off that aired on BBC America in the states, was an investigative unit based in Cardiff that battled extra-terrestrial threats. It ended its run in 2011.

Barrowman recently reprised his Capt. Jack role with a guest appearance on a...

After Maid Marian is kidnapped by the Sheriff of Nottingham, Robin Hood must get a band of men together in order to save her. Together, they hatch an audacious plan to penetrate the depths of the Sheriff’s castle and reclaim Robin’s true love.

The first thing that springs to mind, literally, when Robin Hood: The Rebellion starts is do we really need that much on-screen exposition for a film about Robin Hood? After all, we seem to get a new story of this English folklore legend...

Torchwood at 10: revisiting its origins
Andrew Blair Oct 18, 2016

As Doctor Who spin-off, Torchwood approaches its tenth anniversary, we rewind a decade to revisit its BBC Three origins...

BBC 3 was first connected with Doctor Who as a channel mentioned in The Dæmons (1971), and in 2005 became the broadcaster of Doctor Who Confidential (which ran from 2005 – 2011), providing the new series with accompanying documentaries akin to the existing DVD range. These were initially full of clips from the show's history, then became more about the making of the contemporary series. On top of this, 2006 saw the broadcast of Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood.

Naoko Mori might be back as Tosh in the new Torchwood audio series
Torchwood is back - on audio - and Naoko Mori could be reprising her role of Toshiko 'Tosh' Sato.

Mori told Digital Spy that she has been approached about playing Tosh again in Big Finish's series of audio dramas.

"I miss Torchwood so much," she admitted. "On Twitter, there's been a lot of fans saying, 'Bring it back!' - and it would be so nice to do something.

"I know there's a radio thing happening and they've talked to me about it as well, so hopefully that'll happen in due course."

It's been seven years since Tosh - and her unrequited love interest Owen (Burn Gorman) - were killed off in the gut-wrenching episode 'Exit Wounds'. But if you're still not over it, don't worry - neither is Naoko.

"Still to this day, just thinking about it makes me feel very sad," she said. "That was a really tough scene.

While rumours of a Paternoster Gang Doctor Who spin-off have been floating around for ages, no one could have predicted this – an audio production that teams up Dan Starkey’s Strax with Tom Baker-era companions Jago and Litefoot, played by Christopher Benjamin and Trevor Baxter (they first appeared in Tom Baker’s The Talons Of Weng-Chiang in 1977).

While classic companions are normally fair game to Big Finish (indeed, there's already 9 series worth of Jago and Litefoot material), Strax’s inclusion here makes him the latest in a very-recently-established trend that has seen the Torchwood cast, the main show's Unit characters, Alex Kingston’s River Song, and Ian McNiece’s Winston Churchill all swap the televisual realm for Big Finish audio adventures, all in the space of the last year.

Gareth David-Lloyd Interested in Ianto Jones Revival
Katie Gribble is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Torchwood tea boy, Ianto Jones, became a fan favourite from his very first appearance in the series opener, Everything Changes. Since then his sarcastic, cheeky, no nonsense attitude brightened up every episode of Torchwood and parent show Doctor Who. So when Series 3 of Torchwood, Children of Earth, aired in July 2009, the death of Ianto...

Torchwood: Gareth David-Lloyd’s Ianto Jones returning, for audio adventure
Big Finish has nabbed another Torchwood cast member for an audio adventure – Gareth David-Lloyd will reprise the role of Ianto…

Good news for Torchwood fans, here - Gareth David-Lloyd is making a return to his Torchwood character Ianto Jones. Similar to John Barrowman’s audio plans, Gareth David-Lloyd will reprise the role of Ianto for a Big Finish audio adventure later this year.

The new story is entitled Torchwood: Fall To Earth, and it will be the second instalment in Big Finish’s new Torchwood audio series (Barrowman’s Torchwood: The Conspiracy will come first). Fall To Earth will see Ianto on the first privately-funded space flight, where everything naturally goes wrong. We're not sure when the story will be set, but we'd guess it'll have to be a few years ago, for obvious reasons.

Said producer James Goss: “There was originally going to be a gap after the first release,...

First Trailer for Kickstarter Success Story I Am Alone
Whenever a horror movie gets funded on Kickstarter, we make it a point to cover the flick immediately, if only to show you guys just what you paid for. Case in point: Robert A. Palmer's I Am Alone.

In the flick a survival reality TV crew (including “Torchwood’s” Gareth David-Lloyd) and their cameraman (Gunner Wright) witness the spread of a zombie-like virus that turns the living into the living dead.

Synopsis

Jacob Fitts, television host and survivalist, with his crew - producer Adam Levine and cameraman Mason Riley - set out to shoot another episode of their popular survival show, I Am Alone. Episode 113 takes us deep into the Colorado Rockies, where Jacob will be left alone for 7 days while his team sets off into town to capture footage and shoot interviews. Within hours a viral outbreak spreads rapidly across the globe. Unaware of this outbreak, Jacob, isolated,...

Dragon*Con - Day Three
My pick for best fancy dress at Dragon*Con goes to the man with the Home Depot Horta from Star Trek's first season. Photo: Tony Sullivan My third day at the Dragon*Con scif-fi and fantasy event kicked off with a Doctor Who companions panel. Present were Noel Clarke (Mickey Smith), Eve Myles (Gwen Cooper), Gareth David-Lloyd (Ianto Jones) and veteran John Levene (Sergeant Benton). When asked what their favourite creature was, Myles quickly responded "John Barrowman".

Next up, Team Arrow, Kelly Hu, Seth Gable, Janina Gavankar, Manu Bennett and the irrepressible John Barrowman. In fact, I think they should just hand over the whole convention to Barrowman. Gavankar managed to hold her own, while Barrowman recreated falling off his chair from a panel the previous day and re-enacted a torture scene with Manu Bennett standing in for Stephen Amell, which involved a gratuitous nipple tweak.

Another Doctor Who panel followed,...

Discovering Torchwood
Dedicated television viewers know that there will always be shows that everyone wants you to watch, either it’s a cult show, a show that ended way before it’s time, or seems to grab everyone’s attention but yours. However many viewers find themselves stumbling upon these shows either years later or late into a shows run. I’ve compiled a list of ten shows, published once a week, that have become classics or are on their way to doing so and have recently been discovered by this writer.

Torchwood

Created by Russell T. Davies

Original Run 2006-2011

BBC, Starz HD

I came to Torchwood at the end of its second season and when I was in some serious Doctor Who withdrawals. What I stumbled upon was a show that was deftly written, sexy, bloody and extremely well acted.

A spin off of Doctor Who, Torchwood follows Captain Jack...

Meme: Ianto Jones Heads To Calgary, Ian Nelson Joins "Teen Wolf" As a Young Derek Hale, and Anderson Cooper Talks Celebrity Coming Outs
Big news: There will be a Torchwood: Children of Earth reunion at Calgary Comic Expo, featuring John Barrowman, Gareth David-Lloyd and Eve Myles. Ianto lives! Now who's going?

My friend Rod McCullom writes about the possibility of an African pope coming next month, and it's not good news for gays, HIV on the continent, or condom education.

After months of drama that ultimately meant nothing but political theater when there are real problems to solve, Senator Chuck Hagel has been confirmed as Defense Secretary. Most gay advocacy groups are celebrating his commitment to further implementing the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell.

More than 75 influential Republicans have filed an amicus brief with the Supreme Court asking them to overturn Prop 8. Among them is Meg Whitman, former CEO of eBay, who was a pro 8 supporter when she ran for governor of California. She says she changed her mind because "there is no legitimate,...

Revisiting Torchwood: Children Of Earth
Feature Andrew Blair Dec 20, 2012

Andrew's weekly Torchwood reappraisal comes to the show's crowning moment: Children Of Earth...

This feature contains spoilers.

It's more horrific the second time you watch it, because you know what and why.

Children of Earth is rare: a prime-time sci-fi drama that capitalised and expanded on its audience. Viewing figures were consistently high in what was considered a graveyard slot. Critical and popular acclaim followed. This does not happen often.

Russell T. Davies has been accused of colourful, sentimentalised television. Children of Earth is brutal, pessimistic, and a behind-the-scenes triumph. It was cut down to five episodes rather than thirteen due to licence fee and budgetary issues, and had to accomodate cast unavailability (Noel Clarke and Freema Agyeman's presence was set up in Journey's End, but they were unable to reprise their roles). Anyone who's read A Writer's Tale will know that it was a difficult process to write,...

AfterElton's Top 50 Favorite TV Characters
The results are in! We asked readers to name their favorite TV characters of all time and thousands responded. This year, for the first time, we weren't just asking about favorite gay TV characters. Folks could vote for characters of either gender - and all persuasions. Of course, this being AfterElton we expected gay characters to figure prominently on this list - and they do - but it is interesting to see what female and straight TV roles also resonated with the AfterElton readership.

Before we get to the actual rankings, here are a few statistics.

First, the top fifty came from a broad range of TV shows. Thirty programs were represented, and the two that made the best showing (Glee and Modern Family) placed only four characters each in the rankings.

Second, female characters nabbed 15 of the top 50 spots, or 30%.

Third, obviously a poll like this favors characters from...

Exclusive! Move Over Ryan Seacrest. "The X Factor"’s Steve Jones Has Arrived.
Steve Jones

What is it about Wales that it produces so many extremely attractive and talented men? Despite having a population of only three million, the country has given the world a long list of handsome actors, singers and celebrities including Luke Evans, Tom Jones, Ioan Gruffudd, Matthew Rhys, John Rhys Ifans, Anthony Hopkins, Gareth David-Lloyd and the recently deceased Andy Whitfield.

To that list I predict will soon be added 34-year-old Steve Jones, whose career is likely to hit hyperdrive when Simon Cowell’s U.S. version of The X Factor hits American television next Wednesday night.

Why am I so confident that U.S audiences will take to Jones? Well, everyone knows us gay guys are trendsetters when it comes to the next hot thing and many of us have been aware that the 6’2’’ Welshman is not only incredibly easy on the eyes, but is as charismatic as they come.

Who Killed Torchwood? A Look At How The Popular Sci-Fi Show Has Lost Its Way
After last week’s controversial episode of Torchwood: Miracle Day, the question that haunted us was not whether it was okay to torture a man to death if he cannot die, but rather: who killed Torchwood? For a show that fans had been clamoring for and which cheered when it was announced that it had risen from certain death and cancellation by the joint financial efforts of Starz and BBC America to resurrect it as an American television series, who knew that within such a short timeframe that one would be wishing it had never been raised from the dead.

The irony is that Torchwood: Miracle Day tells the tale of what the world would look like if death ceased to exist. Miracle Day was the day that people stopped dying. Death had finally abandoned us and left the entire human race to rot for eternity. The blessing soon became...
