As Nomination Voting Nears, Are Emmy FYC Campaigns Outspending Oscars? – Notes On The Season
Image
A column chronicling conversations and events on the awards circuit.

Emmy nomination-round voting gets going next Thursday, with ballots due to be completed by the June 23 deadline. Maybe that is why the 20,000-ish members of the Television Academy are seeing a flurry of emails, invites, FYC events, notifications and last-minute campaigning at a pace I can’t quite recall in all my years covering these awards and as a longtime member and former Writers Governor of the TV Academy itself.

The cutoff date for eligibility for this year’s Emmy contest was May 31, and in May alone I counted 148 direct emails from the Television Academy with FYC invites, screening reminders and lineups from all the networks, streamers and studios touting their wares. Every one of these is paid for, so the Academy is raking in a lot of cash off campaigning, all the while reminding members they have nothing to...

How to watch American Coco Gauff try to win her first French Open
Image
The second-seeded American will face No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the Women’s Singles Finals from Roland-Garros.

The eyes of the entire tennis world will be on Roland Garros on Saturday, June 7 as the two top-seeded players in the French Open Women’s Draw will face off for the title. No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus will take on the second-seeded American Coco Gauff. The match will mark the second French Open Finals appearance for the 21-year-old American after falling to Iga Świątek in 2022. Saturday will be the first finals appearance at Roland-Garros for the 27-year-old Belarusian. However, Sabalenka has already claimed three Grand Slam titles (Australian Open in 2023 and 2024 and the U.S. Open in 2024), while Gauff is looking for her second slam to join her 2023 U.S. Open title. The French Open Women’s Finals will air on TNT at 9 a.m., and if you are looking for a live...

‘Hacks’ Takes on ‘The Pitt’ in Max’s Celebrity Pickleball Paddle Royale for Roland-Garros
Image
In honor of Roland-Garros 2025, Max hosted a pickleball Paddle Royale at Venice Beach on Wednesday between two of its biggest shows of the season.

“Hacks” stars Paul W. Downs and Robby Hoffman faced off against Katherine Lanasa and Shawn Hatosy from “The Pitt” — and while Team Hacks may have technically won in the end, it would be a safe bet to put your money on Team Pitt for any future rematches.

That’s because Hatosy and Lanasa’s early lead was stifled once tennis great Andy Roddick decided to step in for first-time pickleballer Hoffman. Of course, fellow pro athlete Terrell Owens eventually took the red clay court to make it three-on-three, but by that point, the damage was done.

Le Petit Court (Max) Terrell Owens, Andy Roddick (Max)

The Parisian-inspired event also featured noteworthy mocktails, branded paddles, headwear, passed apps, a sweet and savory crêpe station and crudités from Schaffer.

Adrien Brody's SNL Performance Was So Bad That Audiences Think He Got Banned
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

As far as bad "Saturday Night Live" hosts go, Adrien Brody is certainly up there. Was he as terrible at the job as Steven Seagal? I suppose not, but that's only because the bar is in hell. Although he's said he'd love to host again, Brody seemingly killed any chance of that happening when he went off-script and did an extended impression of a Jamaican guy, dreadlocks included. Even by the standards of 2003, this bit of Brody's was considered awkward at best. He was just supposed to introduce that week's musical guest, a task that 99.9% of hosts accomplish with no complications; instead, he wouldn't let the bit die.

I don't know what's worse: the fact that he did that bit in the first place (see below) or that he continued doing it for 40 seconds straight. This one clip sparked an...

Federer: Twelve Final Days offers an emotional look at Roger Federer's retirement, focusing on his iconic career and inner circle. The documentary highlights Federer's 20 Grand Slam titles and record-breaking Wimbledon wins, including his last match at the Laver Cup. Federer's retirement was due to a knee injury that required surgery, ending his hopes of returning for the 2022 Wimbledon championship.

Amazon Prime Video's new sports documentary, Federer: Twelve Final Days, delves into the Wimbledon champions final days before he officially retired. The documentary uses behind-the-scenes footage to portray how one of the greatest tennis players and his inner circle and fans handled his retirement news. According to some reviews of Federer: Twelve Final Days, the Asif Kapadia-directed documentary is more of a sentimental tribute to the legendary tennis player than it is about answering hard-hitting questions, yet it does undeniably explore some of the most impressive aspects of his career.

Andre Agassi Is Also Watching ‘Suits’ on Netflix
Image
When Andre Agassi was rising the ranks as a professional tennis player — en route to becoming one of the greatest American men to ever hit the circuit — he often felt forced to defend his hometown of Las Vegas.

“I was born and raised here,” Agassi said last Saturday during a press conference to promote The Netflix Slam featuring superstars Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz. “When I turned pro in 1,972 years ago, there was about 300,000 people that lived in this town. I would travel the world representing Vegas, having to answer some very basic questions such as, ‘What’s it like to live in a hotel?’ It was like, wait a second, Vegas is more than just a strip [of hotels]. To watch it evolve to a point where now we’re seeing not just sports come here, but we’re seeing the greatest environments for sports to participate in the Super Bowl and Formula 1 now here.

The Netflix Slam Gave Great Live Tennis – And Even Better Streaming Marketing
Image
Netflix stuck the landing on a star-studded exhibition match between tennis superstars Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz this weekend. Stakes were high on the court, but the Las Vegas showdown was most effective as a lush advertisement for the streamer as a fledgling live sports destination.

Taking over the Mandalay Bay’s Michelob Ultra Arena, the inaugural Netflix Slam pit legend Nadal against 20-year-old Alcaraz. Rafa, as Nadal is affectionately known to millions of global fans, had not played since a hip injury flared up in 2023. Nadal has only faced Alcaraz a handful of times in his career and wound up losing to the prodigy in a nail-biting tie break.

No one really lost, though. Least of all Netflix. Branding was so pervasive in the hotel and casino that pedestrians lined up 100 deep to take photos in front of a “Netflix Slam” sign, installed on a massive wall of tennis balls.

Carlos Alcaraz Tops Rafael Nadal in Tiebreak at Inaugural Netflix Slam in Las Vegas
Image
“Ok, I can die now.”

So said a woman seated behind The Hollywood Reporter inside Mandalay Bay’s Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas, host of the inaugural The Netflix Slam. She had just snapped a selfie that captured superstars Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz warming up on center court over her shoulder. Sure, it was a dramatic statement but it wasn’t obscene for such an occasion. There’s no shortage of gasp-worthy moments in Sin City, and there’s no doubt many of the 9,489 seated guests could relate to the sentiment.

The Sunday afternoon showdown, the latest in Netflix’s push for live streaming events, pitted two superstar Spaniards in an exhibition match that could be one of the final few times they meet across a net. The fact that it happened was a bit of a coup, too, as it was rescheduled last year due to Nadal...

Atp rankings: Alcaraz solidifies his position on top; Eubanks breaks into top 40
Novak Djokovic at an event for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 (2011)
London, July 17 (Ians) Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz retained the world No.1 position in the latest Atp rankings released on Monday after beating Novak Djokovic to win his first Wimbledon and second Grand Slam singles title.

At only 20 years old, Alcaraz has already held World No.1 for longer than 12 other former World No.1s including Mats Wilander (20 weeks), Daniil Medvedev (16), Andy Roddick (13), Boris Becker (12) and his coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero (8).

Alcaraz leads second-placed Djokovic by 880 points in the Atp Rankings, setting the stage for a big showdown for the Atp Year-End No. 1 ranking.

Last year, Alcaraz became the youngest player to earn the year-end No.1 honour. Djokovic owns the record for most year-end No.1 finishes with seven, most recently accomplishing the feat in 2021.

There was no change in this week’s top 10. Alcaraz and Djokovic are followed by Russian Daniil Medvedev at No.3, Norway’s Casper Ruud at No.4, Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas at No.

The 20-year old Alcaraz currently leads Djokovic by 80 points in the Atp Live Rankings. It will be the second time he has contested a major final knowing victory would also guarantee him World No.

Melbourne, Jan 22 (Ians) Sebastian Korda on Sunday earned the biggest win of his career when he battled past 10th seed Hubert Hurkacz in five gripping sets to reach the Australian Open quarterfinals.

The 29th-seed American advanced to the last eight at a Grand Slam for the first time with a back-and-forth 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 1-6, 7-6(10-7) victory against the Polish star. He will play Karen Khachanov for a place in the semifinals.

“It was difficult but I’m very happy with the way I kind of just stayed down, kept going through it,” he said. “I had a little superstition about the towel. The towel got me through it. Every time I went to the towel I won the point, so I just kept going to it.”

The American claimed an upset in the third round when he ousted back-to-back Australian Open finalist Daniil Medvedev in a flawless straight-sets display.
