Fraiser Season 2 Finale Review: Revival's Storytelling Shift Is A Risk That Has An Emotional Pay-Off
Warning! Spoilers ahead for the Frasier season 2 finale.
The Frasier revival's season 2 finale wraps up a slightly improved sophomore year by sticking to its signature storytelling approach. It's no secret that when the Paramount+ reboot of the beloved sitcom was announced, it was met with a divisive response considering the risks of bringing it back. It didn't help that the majority of its original ensemble isn't involved, including David Hyde Pierce's Niles and Jane Leeves' Daphne. The Frasier season 1 finale effectively addressed the show's premise, which was about Frasier reconnecting with his son, Freddy. However, Paramount+ deemed that the series deserved at least another year.

While the Frasier reboot is slowly but surely bringing back some familiar faces from the original show, one actor casts doubt on a potential appearance in the updated sitcom. Og series actor Wendie Malick believes it wouldn't "feel right" to feature without one of its most beloved stars.
Speaking with TV Insider, Malick, who played the late John Mahoney's on-screen love interest throughout the original Frasier's 11-season run, admits her connection with him makes it hard to consider a return. "Its sort of like when people ask me about Just Shoot Me. Without George Segal, I just dont think it would feel right. I had such a connection to John Mahoney playing his love interest and finally marrying him that Im not sure that I want to revisit that," Malicl said.

It might be too early to say that the "Frasier" revival is getting better. But after season 2, episode 5 brought back one of the best recurring characters from the original series, and with Peri Gilpin's Roz Doyle confirmed as a recurring guest for this season, things are certainly looking up for the show.
Star Kelsey Grammer has done his best to carry the modern incarnation of "Frasier," but he's thus far been hampered by a supporting ensemble that, try as they might, were never going to live up to the original series' excellent cast. As more characters from that beloved '90s sitcom return to the revival, however, the show has started to feel a bit more like the "Frasier" of old we all miss. It's bittersweet to recognize that the 2024 "Frasier" is only really good when it's more obviously pandering to our collective nostalgia, but that is, for better or worse,...

Frasier star Kelsey Grammer insists he hasn't had enough of playing the eponymous talk show host-turned-teacher just yet. The Emmy-winning actor wants to keep playing Frasier Crane for "another 100 episodes" as he sees great potential in the ongoing reboot series.
Speaking with the Toronto Sun, Grammer revealed his plans for the Frasier revival, claiming he's viewing the updated version of the revered sitcom as a long-term project. I want to do another 100 episodes at least, Grammer said. Whether we get there sooner rather than later, I dont know. We could get there in four years if they wanted to, but we dont need to. Having played Dr. Frasier Crane since the '80s, Kelsey Grammer knows his time as one of the biggest sitcom characters in history is closer to ending. The long-time Frasier star gets philosophical as he pictures how he wants the curtains to close on his ongoing reboot.
Speaking with the New York Times, Grammer laid out his vision for ending Frasier, which is in Season 2 of its second run following a decorated 11-year stint between 1993 and 2004. The Emmy-winning actor cited a famous poem by Alfred Tennyson, believing his central character must have "a place to go" when it's all said and done. "In the last show, I want to quote Tennyson, 'Ulysses': 'To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.' Thats the way I want it to end, with a sense that there is still a beginning, an unknown, a place to go," Grammer said.

The Frasier reboot is back with its second season on Paramount Plus. Later this season, viewers will see Dr. Frasier Crane (Kelsey Grammer) return to Seattle, where the original series was set. For those who haven't kept up with Frasier following the original show's conclusion, the iconic television character now resides in Boston, where his character was first introduced during Cheers' third season. Frasier's visit to his native Seattle, which occurs in the October 31 episode "Thank You, Dr. Crane," paves the way for Peri Gilpin's Roz Doyle to have a more prominent role in the reboot. Now, while speaking with Parade Magazine, Frasier star and executive producer Grammer shared why the revival needed to return to this familiar setting:
"It has something to do with getting Roz to Boston because we had to have a reason for her to come back. An organic, good reason for her to come back,...

The Frasier reboot sees Dr. Frasier Crane return to the city and the radio station that made him famous, as the radio psychiatrist-turned-professor goes back to Seattle and Kacl 780 late in Season 2. Aside from reacquainting with his former stomping grounds and ex-colleagues, Frasier's return stems, in part, from an underlying story thread including his close friend, Roz Doyle.
Speaking with Parade Magazine, Frasier star and producer Kelsey Grammer teased one tidbit about the nostalgia-filled Seattle return, which takes place in Season 2, Episode 8, "Thank You, Dr. Crane." According to the Emmy-winning star, the trip back to the Og Frasier's home city ties to Peri Gilpin's Roz, as Roz is seemingly set to join Frasier in Boston for the long haul.

With the 76th Annual Primetime Emmy Award nominations having just been released, there were certainly a few expected nods to such shows as The Bear (23 nominations), Baby Reindeer (11 nominations), and Shgun (25 nominations), but among all the pomp and circumstance there were a few surprising omissions this year, including Kelsey Grammer and two-time Academy Award-winner Emma Stone.

Kelsey Grammer discusses the second season of his Frasier reboot with returning and new characters, from Peri Gilpin to his own daughter. Grammer's new film, the World War II thriller Murder Company, releases on July 5, 2024. Playing a WWII character resonated with Grammer due to his grandfather's service and personal connections.
We just spoke to iconic actor and producer Kelsey Grammer amid the release of his new film Murder Company, a World War II thriller timed to release during the week of Independence Day. Grammer has become such a household name due to his ability to tackle dramatic work like this, and also comedy aka his claim-to-fame character Frasier Crane, first seen in Cheers and then in Frasier, the reboot of which is already shooting a second season. Unlike the first season of the show's continuation, the second season is set to feature a bigger variety of returning characters from the series' original run.

“It’s still really surreal,” admits Toks Olagundoye about her starring role on the Paramount+ series “Frasier.” The actress was “very much” a fan of the original series that ran on NBC from 1993 to 2004, because it was “really well written and so well directed.” She especially loved that the show had “such a great mixture of high comedy and realism,” pointing to the late John Mahoney‘s character Martin Crane as her favorite character. Now 20 years after that show wrapped, the performer is a series regular on its return. Watch our exclusive video interview.

One of the surprises of the "Frasier" revival season finale was that it stacked up quite well against previous Christmas installments. Considering the reboot show was a neither disappointing nor remarkable return to the world of Frasier Crane, it was nice to see the writers step things up for the final episode. But that wasn't the only surprise in the finale. At one point we witnessed a truly unexpected development when Toks Olagundoye's Harvard Psychology department head Olivia got together with Jimmy Dunn's firefighter Moose. Not only did the two characters seem completely incompatible, there wasn't even a hint throughout the preceding nine episodes that the characters might get together. Making things even more bewildering was the fact that the previous episodes had suggested we could see a relationship develop between two other characters.

With this latest episode, the holiday-themed "Reindeer Games," the first season of Paramount's "Frasier" revival has finally come to an end. It's felt both too short and dragged out, refreshingly joyous and embarrassingly flat, an important addition to the modern TV landscape and an unnecessary one. As we viewers (and we at /Film) anatomize the revival's hits and misses, it's important to pause and reflect on the complicated and synecdotal final bang the season went out on. The Dance of the Dead episode of Best Horror Movie You Never Saw was Written by Cody Hamman, Narrated by Jason Hewlett, Edited by Juan Jimenez, Produced by John Fallon and Tyler Nichols, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Did you ever wonder what it would be like if the zombie apocalypse coincided with prom night? The dead rising from their graves, calling out for brains. Disrupting the school event that’s supposed to be a great, memorable moment in a teen’s life. That’s what happens in the 2008 film Dance of the Dead (watch it Here). Which would have been a great sequel to The Return of the Living Dead if it were part of that franchise. And if you haven’t seen it, it’s definitely The Best Horror Movie You Never Saw.
Although Dance of the Dead was released in 2008, the first draft of the screenplay was written eleven years earlier.

CBS hasn't cancelled The McCarthys but fans aren't going to be able to find any new episodes on the schedule.
The McCarthys revolves around sports-crazed family from Boston. Athletically-challenged and gay son Ronny (Tyler Ritter) plans to finally move away to start his own life. Those plans are thrown into turmoil when his basketball coach dad (Jack McGee) offers him a job as assistant coach -- much to the dismay of Ronny's siblings. The sitcom also stars Laurie Metcalf, Jimmy Dunn, Joey McIntyre, and Kelen Coleman.

CBS continues to look for new hit sitcoms. Last year's The Crazy Ones, Bad Teacher, We Are Men, and Friends With Better Lives were all cancelled while Mom and The Millers survived. How will The McCarthys stack up in the ratings? Will it be cancelled too or renewed for a second season? We'll have to wait and see.

Despite attracting poor ratings, CBS has ordered two more episodes of The McCarthys. This brings the first season tally to 15 installments.

CBS recently unveiled their newest Thursday night sitcom -- The McCarthys. How is doing? Is it a comedy hit or a flop? Will it last or could it be cancelled soon?

If this were 1994, The McCarthys would be a groundbreaking sitcom. Set in Boston — or Baaaaah-stun — it's about a sports-obsessed Irish-American family. The patriarch, high-school basketball coach Arthur McCarthy (Jack McGee), hires his gay son Ronny (Tyler Ritter) to be his assistant coach after the previous occupant of the job unexpectedly dies. (Well, maybe not unexpectedly; the recently deceased's name was "Fatty" McFadden, and he was quite fat, you see. This is the source of much mirth.) Complications ensue. The McCarthys carries itself like a genial sitcom that just wants to have a good time, but its view of pretty much every category of human beings is tediously constricted. Arthur and his two eldest sons, Sean (Jimmy Dunn) and Gerard (Joey McIntyre), bond over sports, sports, sports. The only sister in the clan, Jackie (Kelen Coleman), is into guys, and tangentially into sports as a way to meet guys.

The McCarthys CBS Premieres: Oct. 30 Airs: Thursdays at 9:30pm Et/Pt Who’s In It? Tyler Ritter, Jack McGee, Laurie Metcalf, Jimmy Dunn, Joey McIntyre What’s It All About? The McCarthys are a tight-knit Boston family and are therefore loud, obnoxious, sports-obsessed and closed-minded. Middle child Ronny (Ritter) is gay, civilized, sports-ignorant but Wicked Book Smaaht and therefore something of the family’s black sheep. When Ronny wants to move away, his father (McGee), head coach of a high-school basketball team, hires him to be an assistant coach. Crazy, right? It’s also infuriatingly bad. We’d rather listen to New Kids on the … Continue reading →

There's one ground rule for starring on The McCarthys: no bad Boston accents.
"If you don't have it, don't do it," Jimmy Dunn tells TVGuide.com.
"No one is faking a Boston accent," Beantown native Joey McIntyre adds.

We finally had our first network cancellation of the fall season last week, when ABC dropped the ax on "Manhattan Love Story." Had the Alphabet waited one more week, we'd have made it through the first season in a while where all the new fall shows got to debut before one was canceled. But that was not to be, and instead we have our final new network fall show (with plenty more on the bench for midseason, or whatever the broadcast nets are willing to call it these days) coming up this week, along with a new cable comedy. Both, oddly, feature Jack McGee in a supporting role (the result of cable and network shows often filming on different schedules), and that — along with the fact that I don't feel strongly about either one at this stage — is enough excuse to put them together in the same post for a...

[In case you've Forgotten, and as I will continue to mention each and every one of these posts that I do: This is *not* a review. Pilots change. Sometimes a lot. Often for the better. Sometimes for the worse. But they change. Actual reviews will be coming in September and perhaps October (and maybe midseason in some cases). This is, however, a brief gut reaction to not-for-air pilots. I know some people will be all "These are reviews." If you've read me, you've read my reviews and you know this isn't what they look like.] Show: "The McCarthys" (CBS) The Pitch: "Ethnographically Specific Multi-Cam Family Comedy #432" Quick Response: When I did my Take Me To The Pilots on "The Goldbergs," I took the show to task a little bit for all of the shouting and Adam Goldberg told me on Twitter that his real family is just loud. I can't argue with that. Well, "The McCarthys" is a passion project for creator Brian Gallivan and it's at least semi-autobiographical, so who am I to say that his actual family isn't a loving hodgepodge of Boston Irish stereotypes and that family get-togethers don't become a non-stop stream of gay jokes that really might have been edgy and pushing the conversation forward in 1974, but seem stale and dated in 2014. And if Brian Gallivan says that, honest-to-goodness, he and his mother bond over their love of "The Good Wife," I can't say, "Lies, you've inserted at least three...

All week long as the other networks have been frantically renewing and canceling established shows and picking up new shows, CBS has been the cool kid leaning up against the wall in a leather jacket smoking a cigarette. [Yes, I'm picturing Pre-Upfronts Week as a '50s problem drama.] Late Friday (May 9), CBS decided to get in on the action, announcing seven series pickups, five dramas and two comedies. [Actually, it's kinda only six series pickups, since Vince Gilligan's "Battle Creek" had been acquired as a 13-episode series commitment pre-pilot.] On the drama side, CBS is moving forward with the "Battle Creek," the planted spinoff "NCIS: New Orleans," "Stalker" (formerly "Untitled Kevin Williamson"), "Scorpion" and "Madam Secretary." On the comedy side, CBS has ordered "The McCarthys" and "The Odd Couple" to series. It's unclear which shows are headed for midseason and which are targeted for fall. And CBS isn't expected to announce any additional pickups or cancellations today. So let's get down to the details on CBS' new shows for the 2014-15 season,...

Young Broadway actor Jack Cutmore-Scott is set to co-star opposite Bonnie Dennison in Fox‘s multi-camera comedy pilot created/executive produced by Matt Hubbard and exec producer by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock. Directed/exec produced by Pam Fryman, the untitled comedy, which has a series penalty, is set at a women’s college that begins accepting men for the first time in its history. Cutmore-Scott, repped by Don Buchwald and Associates, Management 360 and Kate Buckley in London, will play Charlie Deckard, a wealthy, Kennedy-esque young man who joins the women at Cabot College, much to the chagrin of Thena (Dennison). He is currently filming the Untitled Matthew Vaughn feature. Jimmy Dunn has been cast in CBS’ new pilot for The McCarthys, from Sony TV and Will Gluck’s Olive Bridge Entertainment. The comedy is being retooled as multi-camera after shooting a single-camera pilot last season. Written/co-executive produced by Brian Gallivan,...
