The Last Word: Michael Moore on Trump, Springsteen and Where We're Headed
Bill Clinton
Illustration by Mark Summers for Rolling Stone

On July 21st, 2016 – at a time when nearly every political pundit and member of the mainstream media thought that Donald Trump didn't have even a chance of beating Hillary Clinton – Michael Moore went public with his belief that the Republican candidate was going to win. "You are living in a bubble that comes with an adjoining echo chamber where you and your friends are convinced the American people are not going to elect an idiot for president," he wrote in a pleading messages to Americans,...

Radiohead, Rage Against the Machine Headline New Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Nominees
Thom Yorke in Glastonbury (2006)
Radiohead and Rage Against the Machine have both earned nominations for induction into Cleveland, Ohio’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in their very first year of eligibility. That said, Thom Yorke’s (pictured above) group might no-show the event, even if they’re ultimately selected. “I’d rather be sitting at home in front of the fire or going to a gig,” bandmate Ed O’Brien told Rolling Stone in June when asked about the possible honor. “Brits are not very good at slapping ourselves on the back. It seems very show-biz and I’m not very show-biz.

Jon Bon Jovi
Some of the biggest names in music are among this year's nominees for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Among the rock artists in contention for induction are Bon Jovi, Dire Straits, Judas Priest, The Moody Blues, Radiohead, and Rage Against the Machine.

The British pop duo Eurythmics, the funk bands The Meters and Rufus featuring Chaka Khan, British pop rock singer Kate Bush, and hip hop artist and actor LL Cool J are among some of the other possible future inductees.

For a few of the performers, this isn't the first time they've been on the coveted short list. English groups Depeche Mode and The Zombies, as well as...

Juliette Lewis Talks New Rock Doc, Working With Dave Grohl
Hard Lovin' Woman (2016)
"I always liken myself to the bearded lady," says Juliette Lewis. "Because I'm an actress turned musician, a woman doing male-dominated rock & roll. ... I'm the oddity at the freak show, you know?"

Lewis is speaking with Rolling Stone from New York City where, in a few hours, she'll be attending the Tribeca Film Festival premiere of a new documentary on her musical life, Hard Lovin' Woman. The Michael Rapaport-directed short, which will be available on Red Bull TV beginning April 23rd, chronicles Lewis' mid-2000s turn away from a...

Godzilla (1998)
9 soundtracks that outshone their movies: Tron Legacy, Twilight and more
Godzilla (1998)
These days no movie can get away without a tie-in soundtrack. The latest is Fifty Shades of Grey, which brings together everyone from Beyoncé, Sia and Ellie Goulding.

However, there's always a danger that the album can outshine the movie it originates from. Digital Spy highlights 9 instances where this is the case.

1. Tron: Legacy (2010)

Disney's belated sequel to its cult '80s hit Tron unfortunately forgot to bother with anything approaching a coherent story or believable characters - but what a display of visuals and sound. Daft Punk took care of the latter, crafting a score that fizzed with electronic pulses ripped straight from The Grid.

2. The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009)

Despite being so critically derided, the Twilight movies were consistently able to churn out impressive soundtracks. The best of them was 2009's New Moon, which collected new songs from Thom Yorke, Death Cab for Cutie, Lykke Li, The Killers,...

‘The Crow’ Victims, aren’t we all
If the tragic mythology of Brandon Lee’s on-set death or one of the best 1990s soundtracks isn’t enough to have turned you onto The Crow in 1994, then maybe the current resurgence of comic book and graphic novel adaptations will do the trick. For a film steeped in a dingy combination of mid-90s grunge, steam punk, and goth culture The Crow has a surprising amount of staying power.

Alex Proyas released one of his two best films (alongside 1998’s Dark City) in 1994 and for impressionable comic book nerds, this author included, around the world it proved a watershed, picking up where another Alex – Alex Cox – left off in the early ‘80s with the punk rock wackiness of Repo Man and dystopia of Sid and Nancy.

Proyas’ music video background shows through in The Crow. Nine Inch Nails, Rage Against the Machine, and Pantera were not only staples of the decade,...

A Look Back at the Hits and Misses of Godzilla: The Album
It's hard not to get excited about the upcoming Godzilla reboot, but it's equally difficult to forget America's previous botched attempt at remaking the iconic monster. While I have nothing to say about Roland Emmerich's catastrophic misfire of a film that hasn't already been said countless times over the last 16 years...

I thought it would be fun to take a trip down memory lane to look at the film's soundtrack.

Let's set the scene: the year was 1998. You couldn't go anywhere without seeing a commercial, billboard, poster or memorabilia advertising Godzilla. The multi-pronged marketing strategy also included tie-in campaigns with Taco Bell and Edy's Ice Cream, among others.

It was a time when people still paid for music, as the transition from cassettes to CDs was being made, and movie soundtracks were a big deal. Artists would provide original songs for soundtracks, and you'd have to buy the entire...

Edward Snowden cheered by celebrities
Tom Morello at an event for Real Steel (2011)
As the world waits for Edward Snowden to emerge from his hideout at a Russian airport like some international fugitive version of Punxsutawney Phil, some celebrities are taking to Twitter and elsewhere to voice their support for the secrets leaker.

For those who aren’t following this thriller, it rivals anything at the box office this summer: The former Nsa contractor is holed up in the international transit zone in Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport waiting for a country such as Ecuador to grant him asylum. Russian President Vladimir Putin is defying the White House’s demand to return Snowden to the United States,...

Online Video Advertisers To Spend $667 Million In 2013 on Real-Time Bidding
2012 was a banner year for online advertising, as a whopping $387 million was spent on real-time bidding (Rtb) advertisement. According to Comscore, more than 10.4 billion video ads were served in December alone. However, if a study by Forrester Consulting is to be believed, 2013 is set to blow last year's spending out of the water. Forrester is projecting that advertisers will spend $667 million of online video Rtb over the next 12 months. Rtb refers to any ad space that is bid for by marketers every time a user accesses it. This auction style of ad includes YouTube pre-roll ads and other individually tailored ad offerings. On a side note, this explains how my one day of listening to Rage Against the Machine caused me to receive a month of Rage Against the Machine pre-roll ads

Common Brings Awareness To Accused Man's Clemency
Harry Belafonte
New York — When Harry Belafonte asked Common to participate in a benefit concert in support of freeing Native American activist Leonard Peltier, who is serving two life sentences for the 1975 execution-style deaths of two FBI agents, he did some research before giving his answer.

"I did my own due diligence," Common said in a telephone interview Thursday with The Associated Press.

He decided to participate Friday in the "Bring Leonard Peltier Home Concert" at New York's Beacon Theatre, joining a lineup that includes Belafonte, Jackson Browne, Pete Seeger and others.

"If I can really help a man be free from something he was accused of and is innocent and wants to be with his family, I can't get up there and say I can't do this because I may have a chance to get more record sales, or this film company is not going to decide to use me," the...

"Let's rock. Let's play. Let's record."

First Trailer for Dave Grohl’s Directorial Debut Sound City
Sound City (2013)
The first trailer for Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl’s directorial debut Sound City has been released. The documentary focuses on the legendary Van Nuys, California studio Sound City, where countless artists such as Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Nirvana, and Rage Against the Machine recorded tracks and albums over the past 40 years. The doc includes interviews with just about every rock musician under the sun (Petty, Stevie Nicks, Trent Reznor, Lars Urlrich, etc.), and looks very much like a love letter to analog. Similarities are sure to be drawn to Keanu Reeves’ film vs. digital documentary Side by Side, as the artists that Grohl interviews discuss the importance of analog and the dangers of the music world going all-digital. All in all, this looks like a must-see. Hit the jump to watch the trailer. Sound City will premiere at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival in January and is set for release sometime in February.

Did These Critics Go Too Far?
Rage Against the Machine
From Rage Against the Machine to Alicia Keys' new album and Brad Pitt's new flick, the critics had a large amount of entertainment offerings to pick a part this week.

In music, Rage Against the Machine released the 20th anniversary edition of their debut album "Xx." The critics lauded the album's re-release, finding fault only in loads of redundant bonus material that in no way enhanced the album's timeless tracks. Alicia Keys marked her return with "Girl On Fire," a predictable array of tracks that showed a consistent but in no way evolving Keys. And Solange Knowles continued down the soulful path she started with her debut album, releasing "True," an Ep that succeeded at solidifying her strength as a songwriter.

In movies, Brad Pitt's "Killing Them Softly" fell victim to a weak plot, and the only thing "The Collection" rounded up was a hefty amount of negative feedback from viewers.

Five-year Plan: November albums
1967

Jefferson Airplane: After Bathing at Baxter's (RCA)

This was the Airplane's second LP of 1967, and on it they took the studio freedom their two huge hit singles had earned them and went wild and unsupervised, making a real psychedelic album rather than the carefully contrived simulation of psychedelia that had been Surrealistic Pillow. The result had more avant-garde weirdness than hit singles (RCA had unrealistic hopes for "Watch Her Ride"), but the album actually coheres far better; for all the stylistic disjunctions and studio effects and Jorma Kaukonen's often-abrasive guitar sounds, and for that matter the nine-minute instrumental trio improvisation "Spare Chaynge," it flows organically, creating its own logic.

Cream: Disraeli Gears (I'm not even a Cream fan and I still have to acknowledge the brilliance of "Strange Brew," "Sunshine of Your Love," "Tales of Brave Ulysses," and "Swlabr")

Moody Blues: Days of Future Passed (early blast of prog-rock,...

Hurricane Isaac caused the Lynyrd Skynard concert at the convention to be canceled. And then rumors circulated that he'd paid Journey $500,000 to perform. It wasn't him, it was actually a private group, Liberty Plaza, that hired Journey.

In what has to be the first sign of the coming apocalypse foreseen by the Mayans, Snooki gave birth to a son this weekend.

Two members of Pussy Riot have fled Russia in the wake of the conviction of three members of the collective for hooliganism.

Former Republican Florida Governor Charlie Crist has come out – in favor of President Obama.

Rage Against the Machine Slams Paul Ryan
Rage Against the Machine
Well who woulda thunk it! According to The New York Times, Paul Ryan is a Rage Against the Machine fan. In fact the conservative Wisconsin Congressman says it’s his favorite band. Huh?! His musical pick has made some folks (including myself) more than a bit confused. Hey Paul, are ya sure you didn’t mean Ted Nugent? While Ryan’s musical taste is a bit odd given his ultra conservative politics, guess who is having none of it? Rage Against the Machine! Tom Morella, the band’s guitarist, is now blasting Mitt Romney’s VP pick, and what he has to say is pretty darn scathing. At one point, Morello goes so far as saying that Paul Ryan is the "embodiment of the machine that our music has been raging against for two decades." Oh snap!

Presidential PopWatch round-up on Paul Ryan: Ayn Rand disciple, Deadhead, catfish noodler
There’s a saying in politics that Washington is Hollywood for ugly people, but they might need to add a corollary: Except for Republican vice-presidential candidates. When Mitt Romney announced 42-year-old Paul Ryan as his running mate, the media swooned at the Wisconsin congressman’s clean-cut hunkiness. Jon Stewart was driven to distraction by his “Smurf-anus” blue eyes, and as pundits complimented his fitness prowess — obsessive P90X workouts reportedly leave him with only 6-8 percent body fat — you could practically hear the countdown until the first shirtless beach photo op presented itself. (The over/under here is 6.5 days.)

Ryan,...

Mitt Romney
America's first catfish-wrestling vice president? After Mitt Romney's announcement Saturday that Rep. Paul Ryan will be his running mate, the spotlight intensified on the 42-year-old Gop congressman from Janesville, Wis., a policy wonk with a passion for fiscal conservatism and, yes, wrangling catfish. Here's what you need to know about Romney's pick: 1. He was voted prom king at his high schoolHe also was named biggest "brown-noser" in his senior yearbook. A bright and popular student at Joseph A. Craig high school in Janesville, he played varsity soccer and was a member of the ski and Latin clubs. He also worked the grill at McDonald's.

Watch: Trailer For Dave Grohl-Produced & Directed Doc 'Sound City'
While the history of musicians moving into movies -- whether acting, directing or otherwise -- has been dodgy to say the least, there are times when the artist and material syncs up perfectly and the transition makes sense. And such is the case with "Sound City," a new documentary produced and directed by Foo Fighters frontman and former Nirvana beatkeeper Dave Grohl. The film is about the famed studio in California that was not only the home to the sessions for Nirvana's Nevermind, but a number of landmark bands and seminal albums over the years. Fleetwood Mac recorded their self-titled LP and Rumours there, Neil Young laid down After The Gold Rush, Tom Petty put Damn The Torpedoes to tape, and acts ranging from Rage Against The Machine to Foreigner all spent time at Sound City. The studio is said to have one of the most distinct and best-sounding rooms available,...

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD Review [Xbla]
Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Microsoft kicked off their Summer of Arcade yesterday with the release of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD. But has Tony flipped his way to another winner, or is this just the death throws of the franchise?

The latest Tony Hawk games are regarded as among the worst in the series, a change of developer and a affection for plastic peripherals meant that Tony undoubtedly lost his crown as the king of the skateboarding game.

In an attempt to reconcile the damage done to the series, developers Robomodo have lovingly remade a collection of the best levels from the first two Tony Hawk games in heavenly HD. These first two titles were originally released way back at the turn of the millennium. With the remake the developers have kept to the original formula and claim to have used the original code from Neversoft, who were the...

Dave Grohl at an event for Sound City (2013)
Watch: Six-Year-Old Is A Drumming Prodigy
Dave Grohl at an event for Sound City (2013)
Jaxon Smith is an adorable six year old with one unbelievable talent. The little drummer is pretty much ready to join the Foo Fighters, if the above video of him rocking along to their song "Pretender" is to any indication.

According to the video's description, Jaxon was born in 2005 and weighed just one pound. He's grown up to be quite a rocker, performing songs by Rush, The Who, Heart (yep, "Barracuda"), the Silversun Pickups, Tool, Rage Against the Machine and more. For more of Jackson's amazing drumming, head over to the profile of YouTube user U2RUSHFAN.

Even more incredible? Jackson is described as self-taught. In his most recent video (featuring an upgraded, digital drum kit), Jackson drums along to The Who's "The Real Me."

Our favorite part of Jaxon's "Pretender" performance comes around 3:23, when he jumps back at the kid-size drum set after the bridge. All things considered,...

Muse unveil tracklisting for new album 'The 2nd Law'
Rage Against the Machine
Muse have revealed the full tracklisting for their upcoming album The 2nd Law. The LP will be released on September 17, and will be followed by an arena tour of the UK in October. The band have previously gone on record as saying that The 2nd Law will be "radically different" from their previous work, with singer Matt Bellamy saying that they are effectively "drawing a line" under a certain part of their career. A trailer for the new album was released last month, which features music that Bellamy claims "tries to do what Rage Against the Machine did with hip-hop in the 1990s - take a bit of the electronic world and dubstep and play it with (more)...

Huge Change Coming To Coachella
Rage Against the Machine
The nation's marquee music festival is homeless: Goldenvoice has decided to move the massive concert weekend out of Indio after that California city proposed an 18 dollar ticket tax for 2014.

It's a surprising move given Coachella's extensive history in the town outside of Palm Springs (especially given the measure isn't even on the ballot yet), but concert promoters have apparently had enough of what they say are Indio's ungrateful ways. As reported in The Wrap, Goldenvoice estimates that the festival brings in a massive sum for the city, including $800,000 in ticket fees, the sales tax on $9 million in food and beverage sales and another $800,000 tax for Transient Occupancy.

Goldenvoice president Paul Tollett said that the tax was "outrageous for all the things we've done with Indio" and pledged to also move the Stagecoach Festival from the city. The loss of the two festivals will undoubtedly be a blow to the struggling city's economy.

MTV To Air Daria Episodes Throughout the Summer In Retro Mania
It took MTV eight long years to release their seminal late '90s animated satire series Daria onto DVD, and it seems that the network is looking to again belatedly capitalize on its popularity by re-airing episodes this summer. The newly dubbed "Retro Mania" block will also include frothy summer fare The Hills and Laguna Beach, which will have their runs first before returning to the (relative) sanity of Lawndale High. The major reason Daria stayed off of DVD for so long was because of music licensing, and as someone who now owns the series I can definitively say that there is something lacking as Daria and Jane's witticisms are set to generic "filler" music rather than Beck, Rage Against the Machine or Smashing Pumpkins. Still, the series is always worth a revisit regardless, though a return to its original score would be a treat. For more on the Retro Mania lineup,...

Girl Talk to tour North America this summer
Girl Talk, the DJ who is not a DJ, will take his show of mindless, party-ready mashups on the road this summer. Whether anybody will actually show up when he plays in West Des Moines, Iowa, or in New Braunfels, Texas, is an entirely different story. The tour will come to Denver on June 23 at the Westword Music Showcase. Girl Talk’s last album was All Day, released in 2010, yet another one of his singular releases where he pairs, say, Rage Against The Machine and Rye Rye for a few seconds, only to move onto pairing Depeche Mode ...

City of Chicago pulls permit for nurses’ Nato march after Tom Morello added to bill
The forthcoming Nato conference in Chicago is throwing all sorts of wrenches in the way the city works. Despite the hype about the conference drawing Nato staffers to our museums and tourist sites, a bunch of those are shutting down for the duration. Office workers downtown are being laughably told to dress like protestors, for fear that their suits might inspire Molotov cocktails. Now the city’s decided that nurses speaking out for tax reform—especially when advocated for by a member of Rage Against The Machine—are a security threat. Rolling Stone reports that the city of Chicago has ...
