Roland Emmerich's Anonymous sparks Stratford signs protest
Just a few miles from here in Stratford-upon-Avon, Roland Emmerich's new film Anonymous hasn't gone down too well.

It has reignited the long-standing debate in which some scholars claim William Shakespeare did not create the works attributed to him. Over the years, more than 70 other names have been suggested as the real writers of his plays and sonnets.

Emmerich's movie depicts the Earl of Oxford - who is among the contenders proposed by the so-called anti-Stratfordians - as the real author of the English classics.

Understandably, the version of events described in Anonymous has not met with approval from residents, businesses and academics in Stratford.

Shakespeare (right) was born and raised in the Warwickshire town and is believed to have been educated there.

Roland Emmerich: literary detective. Not quite. But then Emmerich, the director of Godzilla, Independence Day, 2012 and The Day After Tomorrow, has never knowingly let the facts get in the way of a good story. And if the German-born director wants to position himself as an expert on Elizabethan drama now that he has a new film, Anonymous, based on the idea that Shakespeare didn't write the plays and poems attributed to him, who is to deny him?

Certainly not the English Speaking Union (Esu), which last week lined up a donnish cast to appear alongside Emmerich for a debate about the Shakespeare authorship question.
