After 20 years, Ondi Timoner has rereleased her riveting and colossal documentary study of two psych rock bands, the Dandy Warhols and the Brian Jonestown Massacre, and their epic dual story of success and failure. There is about 40 minutes of extra material and a present-day coda that reveals, among other things, that each band has a member who now sells real estate. That ending, brutally and suddenly visiting grey-haired middle age on these gorgeous rock’n’roll exquisites, reminded me of the Fellini-esque dream opening to Woody Allen’s Stardust Memories in which two trains, one carrying life’s winners and the other with hapless losers, wind up at the same dusty rubbish heap.

The Dandy Warhols have joined forces with Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash for the new song “I’d Like to Help You with Your Problem.”

It’s the latest single from the Dandy Warhols’ upcoming album Rockmaker, out March 15th. As if to make good that album title, the Dandy’s tapped none other than Slash himself for the self-described “Vietnam-era acid rock” song.

The Dandy Warhols are back, and they’ve announced a run of 2024 tour dates in North America.

Kicking off on March 4th at DC’s 9:30 Club, The Dandy Warhols will trek the US and Canada with shows in Boston, New York, Montreal, Toronto, Denver, and more before concluding at Los Angeles’ Fonda Theatre on March 19th.

The soundtrack for Hulu’s Quiz Lady features an eclectic mix of songs from different eras, reflecting not just the primary setting of the movie but its backstory as well. One week before production is scheduled to start on writer-director Ondi Timoner’s “Mapplethorpe,” the biopic starring Matt Smith as photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, “Imposters” actress Marianne Rendón has been cast as Patti Smith, IndieWire has learned. The role was originally slated for Zosia Mamet until she dropped out over scheduling conflicts.

What the film doesn’t have, however, is the support of Patti Smith.

The Robert Mapplethorpe biopic “Mapplethorpe” starring Matt Smith is heading into production in July, according to Interloper Films. An intimate portrait of one of the most controversial photographers in American history, the film stars Smith as Mapplethorpe.

Documentary filmmaker Ondi Timoner will direct the film, which she co-wrote with Bruce Goodrich. The movie follows Mapplethorpe from his rise to fame in the 1970s to his untimely death in 1989 due to complications from AIDS. Boston Diva Productions will produce alongside Timoner’s Interloper Films.

Thanks to streaming services such as Netflix, we’ve never had better access to documentaries. A whole new audience can discover that these real life stories are just as thrilling, entertaining, and incredible as the latest big-budget blockbuster. What’s more, they’re all true too. But with a new found glut of them comes the ever more impossible choice, what’s worth your time? Below is my pick of the 50 best modern feature length documentaries.

I’ve defined modern as being from 2000 onwards, which means some of the greatest documentaries ever made will not feature here. I’m looking at you Hoop Dreams.

Russell Brand has cancelled his keynote address at the South by Southwest music and arts festival.

The comedian had been scheduled to open up the festival tonight (March 13) in Austin, ahead of the premiere of new documentary Brand: A Second Coming.

Director Ondi Timoner's documentary feature chronicles Brand's growing interest in political causes and social issues over the last few years.

Brand was scheduled to introduce the movie at the Paramount Theatre at 6.30pm local time tonight, but has now penned a lengthy statement to explain his discomfort with the film.

"[Timoner] wanted creative control and to make a documentary about me and my transition from a relatively conventional celebrity to whatever the hell it is I am now," he wrote.

"You'd think a narcissist would like nothing more than talking about themselves and their 'rags to riches', 'hard luck' story but actually, it felt like, to me, my life...

Beginning with its 70-something subject attacking the director with his walking stick, Beware Of Mr Baker (2012) introduces a man – ex-Cream drummer Ginger Baker – so bellicose he's made the whole world his practice kit. Like Brick Top from Snatch with even greater anger-management issues, Baker is a bitter old codger who "communicates more through his drums than his words", according to his long-suffering daughter. There’s a rare breed of television show that makes the leap into becoming a feature film. Most have been paint-by-numbers modernizations, desecrating the source material, while others are made-for-television productions that waited too long for some type of forced reunion. Any true Marshmallow knows the rest of the words. The rousing 2003 Dandy Warhols tune “We Used to Be Friends” underscored the opening credits of Veronica Mars throughout its three seasons on the air. Even though it had a radio life outside of the show (it was even used on an episode of The O.C.!), the song belongs to Veronica Mars. Like all great theme songs, it has become indistinguishable from the show itself.

As many iTunes lovers and Youtube fanatics understand, music (old and new) has become a huge factor on hit television shows and both the show and artists featured benefit from the collaboration. Ever YouTube a certain scene from your favorite show for hours on end? Did it have a catchy song that you immediately downloaded? Yes, the odds are that you have.

Television show soundtracks are an obsession over here and the music played make that specific scene that much more memorable. Remember "Hide and Seek" when Marissa Cooper killed Ryan's brother Trey? What about "Paint the Silence" by Dice when Marissa kissed Ryan on the ferris wheel? Thought so. The O.C. has had so many hits like Phantom Planet's "California" and even the cover of "Forever Young" by Youth Group, but here's to 10 more that made just as much of an impact.

I'd be lying if I told you that I was aware of the Dandy Warhols before Veronica Mars used their song "We Used to Be Friends" as its theme, but in my defense I've followed their career rather attentively ever since. Now granted, that means I arrived pretty late to the Dandy Warhol-ian party and that represents an almost willful ignorance of the Portland group's previous hit "Bohemian Like You" which at the time of its release was rather widely played. For that I apologize. Moving on to the present day, the Dandy Warhols released their ninth studio album This Machine back in April, and stands like (yet another) testament to the band's ability to maintain itself and refine their sound to fit a number of different genres while still maintaining their signature energetic mellow through the last 14 years. What began as a Primal Scream problem has been turned over to The Dandy Warhols.

The trouble began earlier this week, when UK Home Secretary Theresa May used a song at a Conservative party conference that was thought to be Primal Scream's 1994 song "Rocks." Apparently, someone at the conference wrongly informed Labour MP Kerry McCarthy that it was the Primal Scream song, and McCarthy had what is the knee-jerk reaction nowadays -- took to Twitter to post a link to the lyrics, which begin like so: "Dealers keep dealing'/Thieves keep thieving'/Whores keep whorin'/Junkies keep scorn'/Trade is on the meat rack/Strip joints full of hunchbacks/Bitches keep bitchin'/Clap keeps itching'."

Why he wanted everyone to associate these lyrics with the Tory Party is another confusing twist. Long story short, this traveled down the Twitter-vine to Primal Scream themselves, who, what do you know, also...

The lead singer of the Dandy Warhols has hit out at the Conservative party after they used one of the band's tracks at a political event. It was originally reported that Home Secretary Theresa May walked offstage to Primal Scream track 'Rocks' at a party conference, after which the group said that they were "disgusted" that she had used their music despite having different political beliefs. It then emerged that the song used was actually The Dandy Warhols's 'Bohemian Like You', which caused frontman Courtney Taylor-Taylor to launch a tirade of his own. Taylor-Taylor wrote on the band's official website: "Wtf? Where do I bitch about this? I'll tear their fuggin heads off. As three forthcoming films attest, music biographies are at their most compelling when warring egos are intrinsic to the tale

Who actually watches rock documentaries? It's a persistent question, invited yet again by three prestigious new studies of George Harrison (Martin Scorsese's Living in the Material World), U2 (Davis Guggenheim's From the Sky Down) and Pearl Jam (Cameron Crowe's Pearl Jam Twenty). While not as Pravda-like as the record company-funded featurettes you find on DVD extras or late-night TV, they are all films made by fans for fans. The latter two (Scorsese's epic is more searching) are basically benign propaganda about decent people overcoming obstacles in the name of musical excellence.

Last week was bad gigs week – and in fact, Paul Lester's fun-packed three pages of interviews of musicians talking about their worst-ever stage experiences drew near-universal approval. Lots of people suggested their own worst gigs, of which more later.

But first off, honours must go to Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson, whose story about a urine-soaking at Shea stadium drew a bunch of comments that form a subsection in itself. The Summer of the Superhero continues unabated with Martin Campbell’s Green Lantern, which took a mild commercial snubbing and a severe critical one this past weekend. How bad could it be, really? Listen if you dare find out the answer. Meanwhile, since we’re running out of franchises to review, we turn back to 1995 for another sci-fi actioner / comic-book adaptation about an imaginary law enforcer: Judge Dredd. But which movie will fare better by our estimation? Truly, a battle for the ages.

On Tuesday, the Kings of Leon unveiled the trailer for "Talihina Sky," their first (and, some might say, inevitable) foray into the wild world of rock docs. Still a work-in-progress, "Talihina" will debut at the Tribeca Film Festival later this month, and gives fans a glimpse into Kings' rise from God-fearing preacher's sons (and nephews) to platinum-plus arena rock icons ... a voyage that, of course, includes plenty of whiskey swiggin’, weed tokin’, vomiting, nudity and an awkward intra-band confrontation or 16. Obviously, we're excited.

And so, in honor of the (really pretty excellent) "Talihina" trailer — and the Foo Fighters' just-released "Back and Forth" doc, too — we decided to take a look back at some of the all-time best rock documentaries. Will the Kings join this list? We'll just have to wait and see.

On Nightingale, Erland And The Carnival succeed in integrating a variety of musical styles into a distinctly old-world vibe. But in the execution of an interesting concept, something falls a little short. Everything about Nightingale seems forced: the variety for variety’s sake (including stabs at folk, psychedelia, ambient, and garage-punk), the bizarre recording location (inside a ship moored on the Thames), and the blustery swagger. Erland’s take on prog-pop never feels as mischievous as The Dandy Warhols, or as blissfully carefree as Super Furry Animals.
