Michelle Williams Muses on the Real Love Story at the Center of ‘Dying for Sex’
Image
This isn’t Michelle Williams’ first Emmys rodeo. The golden laurel has taken residence in her home since 2019, when she won for outstanding lead actress in a limited series or movie for portraying Tony-winning actress and dancer Gwen Verdon in the FX biographical drama Fosse/Verdon. Now she’s back in the same race for Dying for Sex, also on FX, but that doesn’t make campaigning any easier.

“I get so nervous,” Williams, 44, confesses. “It’s a lot of adrenaline and I still have to keep taking my own advice, which is to try and stay in the moment and enjoy it because it’s all over so quickly.”

Williams is nominated for her portrayal of real-life podcaster Molly Kochan, who, upon a terminal cancer diagnosis in 2015, separated from her husband of 15 years and embarked on a journey of sexual exploration that included multiple casual liaisons with a variety of male suitors.

Broadway’s Conrad Ricamora Starts Scholarship Fund For Asian Actors Amid Casting Controversy
Image
On Sunday, Conrad Ricamora, a Tony-nominated actor currently starring in Oh, Mary! on Broadway, announced the creation of a scholarship fund for Asian American male actors.

The idea for the fund came from “decades of erasure” of Asian American men in the theater industry, Ricamora says, but also took place days after a casting controversy at Maybe Happy Ending, which has prompted outcry from members of community.

The Tony Award-winning musical, which came to Broadway from South Korea, announced that a white actor, Andrew Barth Feldman, would be replacing Darren Criss, who had won a Tony Award for his role and became the first Asian American actor to win best performance by an actor in a leading role in a musical. The show follows two robots living in Seoul, and had featured actors of Asian descent in the leading roles and understudies in its various stage iterations, with Criss pointing...

Conrad Ricamora Launches Scholarship For Asian American Male Actors
Image
Conrad Ricamora has launched a scholarship for Asian American male actors. The stage and screen star posted the link to a GoFundMe page where people can donate to the fund. At press time, he has raised $33,894 of the $55,000 goal, and has received·208 donations. The scholarship, for Asian American male actors pursuing Bfa or Mfa acting degrees, is called The Right to Be There, because, as Ricamora writes, "no young actor should grow up feeling like their presence is conditional. Not in their training, and not on the stage." Ricamora launched the fund with $8,000 (because 8 is a lucky Chinese number) of his own money, and he plans to match the first $10,000 of donations that come in. "I've been carrying a lot of grief lately," Ricamora wrote...

Why Hulu Canceled How To Die Alone After One Season
Image
Airports always carry an air of possibility; everywhere you look, people are doing something new, visiting home, or embarking on a new chapter. Moments of transport in different entertainment mediums pack all that uncertainty into their gutters and move the viewer into a new headspace to consider what has been and what is to come. A show like "How to Die Alone" did double-duty in that regard, because Natasha Rothwell's Hulu series showed how much TV has grown in the last half-decade, and how far the medium still has to go. The streamer decided to cancel the series, citing low viewership, failing to recognize potential when it was staring them right in the face.

"How to Die Alone" is a comedy/drama starring Natasha Rothwell as Mel, an airport worker who's been in emotional limbo for some time and awakens to the possibility of her life being more than...

Star-playwright Cole Escola won the Best Actor in a Play Tony for their riotously funny work in the outlandish comedy “Oh, Mary!,” marking the first time a nonbinary performer has scored a Tony win for any play category for acting.

Escola portrayed Mary Todd Lincoln as a boozy cabaret singer hopeful in a John Waters-style madcap production, in which she rants and raves while a queer-leaning Abe Lincoln (Conrad Ricamora) is heading toward a pre-determined assassination.

Escola has enjoyed a healthy pre-cursor awards lead-up, winning Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for their high-wire act of a performance. Recently while on a planned leave, “American Primeval” star Betty Gilpin and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” breakout Tituss Burgess...

Tonight, at the Tony Awards red carpet, Oh, Mary! writer and star Cole Escola paid tribute to Bernadette Peters with an outfit that resembled what Peters wore in 1999 when she won her Tony Award for Annie Get Your Gun. Take a look below at Bernadette Peters' 1999 acceptance speech along with Escola's outfit! 'Oh, Mary!' Star Cole Escola Reveals Inspiration for Tony Awards 2025 Dress
Image
Cole Escola is giving us an incredible fashion moment at the 2025 Tony Awards!

The 38-year-old actor wore an incredible dress on the red carpet on Sunday (June 8) at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.

Cole revealed on the red carpet that their look was inspired by the dress that Bernadette Peters wore at the 1999 Tonys to accept her Best Actress win for Annie Get Your Gun.

Tonight, Cole is nominated for two awards – Best Play for writing Oh, Mary! and Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play for starring as Mary Todd Lincoln. They’re the favorite to win in both categories!

Also pictured inside is Tony-nominated co-star Conrad Ricamora and the play’s Tony-nominated director Sam Pinkleton.

Tony Awards Predictions 2025: Who Will Win? Who Should Win?
Image
Broadway’s history books might remember the 2024-2025 season as the year Hollywood stars – George Clooney, Denzel Washington, Jake Gyllenhaal, Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook – sent box office revenue (and ticket prices) soaring to record heights. Or maybe the year of Audra McDonald and Nicole Scherzinger. But I’ll remember this Broadway season as being just so very funny. Oh, Mary!, Eureka Day, Death Becomes Her, even the tender humor of Maybe Happy Ending, all supplied audiences with something in very short supply outside the theater this year: Laughter. That’s the best legacy of the 2024-2025 Broadway season.

With that in mind, and much gratitude, here are my predictions for this Sunday’s 78th Annual Tony Awards.

Best Play

Will win: Oh, Mary!

Should win: Oh, Mary!

2025 Tony Awards: Predicting the Likely Winners, from ‘Maybe Happy Ending’ to ‘Purpose’
Image
Sutton Foster, Bernadette Peters, Lea Salonga, Idina Menzel, and (if I may invoke her name) Patti LuPone would have been a monster of an all-star Tony nomination lineup in any other season. But those past winners, each a major force in musical theater history, missed the ballot despite their (almost uniformly) strong showings on Broadway this year.

If it’s uncouth to define a season by who didn’t make the Tony cut, that group of also-rans is a sign of the riches on offer. And if this season was in part distinguished by the arrival of a cavalcade of Hollywood A-listers, the nominations also highlight how many Broadway mainstays have set up residence to deliver excellence year after year: Nominees Jonathan Groff, Danya Taymor, Kara Young, Justin Peck, and Dede Ayite all won Tonys last season.

So if not quite every gem of the season is in the mix this Sunday,...

Tony Awards: Predicting the Winners Using Just Math
Image
The world will descend on New York on Sunday night, by way of the 78th Tony Awards. Shows set in the U.S., the U.K., Cuba, Italy, and Iran all make their way to the nominees circle. Not to mention a show from South Korea projected to win more Tonys than any other production, potentially the first one ever to premiere in Asia and win best musical.

And when I say “projected,” I mean that mathematically. Every year, I run a statistical model based on precursor awards, which categories a show is nominated in, blended critic predictions, and betting markets to project the odds that each nominee will emerge victorious in every category. After another wonderful year on Broadway, with 42 new shows opening and 29 of them receiving nominations, it’s time to get excited for the big night with a data-based forecast at who might triumph at Radio City...

‘Oh, Mary!’ Tony nominee Conrad Ricamora on getting laughs as Abraham Lincoln: ‘I’ve got to take the stakes deadly seriously’
Image
"The jokes are always so strong, but the surprising thing is that people have been so moved by the show as well," says Conrad Ricamora of the hit new play Oh, Mary! The actor stars opposite playwright Cole Escola, and earned his first career Tony nomination for matching the zany, camp energy of the writer.

Ricamora has been with the production since its original off-Broadway run, and believes that much of its success is because of the seriousness behind the jokes. In a recent Gold Derby interview, he discusses the commitment to the seriousness behind the hysterics, his love of classic plays, and his thoughts about a potential sequel to the fan-favorite movie Fire Island.

Gold Derby: Could you have imagined the unprecedented mainstream success of Oh, Mary! when you were performing the show downtown at the Lucille Lortel Theatre?

Conrad Ricamora: It all feels like this impossible thing. The...

Nicole Scherzinger Wins Broadway's Most Difficult Acting Prize to Win at Drama League Awards 2025
Image
The best of Broadway and Off-Broadway were honored at the 2025 Drama League Awards and Nicole Scherzinger took home the most coveted acting award of the year!

The event took place on Friday afternoon (May 16) at the Ziegfeld Ballroom in New York City.

While the Tony Awards gives out eight acting awards each year to recognize the best in both plays and musicals with gendered categories for leading and supporting performances, the Drama League Awards only gives out one acting award each year. The Distinguished Performance Award has dozens of nominees and combines all performances into one category, making it incredibly difficult to ever win the award. Once you win once, you can never win again, so some actors receive honorary notices when they return to Broadway.

Nicole won the this year’s Distinguished Performance Award for her work in the musical Sunset Blvd.

Image

Buena Vista Social Club, Death Becomes Her, and Maybe Happy Ending lead the 2025 Tony Awards nominees, scoring 10 nominations each. Dead Outlaw, John Proctor is the Villain, Sunset Blvd, and The Hills of California earned seven nominations, followed by Floyd Collins, Just in Time, Purpose, and The Picture of Dorian Gray with six.

‘Oh, Mary’s’ Cole Escola on Tony Noms: “If I’m Allowed to Be Sincere, Today Would Be the Day”
Image
While Cole Escola is usually ready with a quippy response, on Tony nominations day, they can’t help but be genuine.

“I guess if I’m allowed to be sincere, today would be the day,” Escola said.

Escola was nominated for a Tony Award for their role as Mary Todd Lincoln in ‘Oh, Mary!’ The play, which Escola wrote, also received a nomination for best play. In total, the production received five Tony nods, including one for Escola’s cast member Conrad Ricamora, who plays Mary’s husband, and for director Sam Pinkleton.

Escola landed on the idea for the play in 2009, with the starting point of “What if Abe’s assassination wasn’t such a bad thing for Mary Todd Lincoln?” What resulted was a raucous reimagining of Mary Todd Lincoln as a wannabe cabaret singer with ringlet curls and a penchant for drinking. The play originated Off-Broadway at...

Tony Awards Nominations Snubs And Surprises: ‘Othello’, Denzel Washington, Jake Gyllenhaal And Kieran Culkin Don’t Make The Cut
Image
Well, big weekly grosses and even bigger stars can’t guarantee a Tony Awards nomination.

Broadway does what Broadway wants, so no Best Play nominations (or anything else) for huge moneymaker Othello, and no Best Play noms for Good Night, and Good Luck, Stranger Things: The First Shadow and The Picture of Dorian Gray. Same for the critical favorite Cult of Love.

While Good Night and Dorian Gray weren’t nominated for Best Play, their big stars — George Clooney and Sarah Snook, respectively — were nominated for their performances, as expected. In fact, Dorian Gray, in which Snook plays all the characters from the Oscar Wilde novel, has the distinction of being the most nominated solo show in Tony history, placing in six categories: Snook’s performance, Kip Williams’ direction, and nods for scenic, lighting, sound and costume design.

Daniel Dae Kim becomes first Aapi Tony nominee for Lead Actor in a Play; record 7 Asian acting bids
Image
With today's announcement of the Tony Awards nominations, Daniel Dae Kim has made history as the first Aapi nominee in the Lead Actor in a Play category. Kim was recognized for his performance in the revival of Yellow Face, where he plays a satirical version of playwright David Henry Hwang. Kim's nomination is also part of a record-setting year for Asian representation at the Tonys.

Bd Wong was the first actor of Asian descent to score a Tony. Coincidentally, his 1988 win for Featured Actor in a Play came courtesy of another Hwang play, M. Butterfly. Since then, Iranian performer Arian Moayed has competed in the same category, with nominations for Bengal Tiger in the Baghdad Zoo (2011) and A Doll’s House (2023). Paul Chahidi was nominated in the same race in 2014 for Twelfth Night, then Michael Aronov won the featured prize in 2017 for Oslo.

Other past Asian nominees include Lea Salonga (Miss...

Othello, one of the most expensive productions on Broadway, led by Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal, was notably shut out of the nominations.

Audra McDonald received her 11th Tony Award nomination for her role as Rose in Gypsy on Broadway, becoming the most Tony-nominated performer in history. She had previously held the record...
