Buckle up for a modern cult classic that I think many horror fans have yet to see. Now on Screambox is Sonny Laguna and Tommy Wiklund’s Wither, an extremely bloody scary tale of demonic possession that plays as a Swedish tribute to Sam Raimi’s horror classic, Evil Dead.
In the film, a couple set off to a cabin in the vast Swedish woodlands to have a fun holiday with their friends… but under the floorboards awaits an evil from Sweden’s dark past.
“The dazed young men and women soon mount their attack that includes decapitations, dismemberment, spurting blood, flailing axes and the kind of gore one does associate with Swedish cinema!”
Check out Wither, which Meagan Navarro calls “gloriously gory”, right now on Screambox alongside Herschell Gordon Lewis’s Blood Feast (and its remake), the Pet Sematary-inspired Lizzie Lazarus, several Giallo movies, the newly added and incredibly timely Street Trash remake,...

New month, new horror recommendations from Deep Cuts Rising. This installment features five selections reflecting the month of August 2024.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s offerings include a horror take on a classic fairy tale, a creature-feature, and more.
Dead Kids (1981)
Dead Kids a.k.a. Strange Behavior (1981)
Directed by Michael Laughlin.
While College Colors Day (August 30) is a time to be proud of your alma mater, the students and faculty of Galesburg University likely feel less spirited after the events of Dead Kids. In this sci-fi/horror chiller, college experiments on a Midwestern community’s young people result in murder. Several, in fact. The guinea pigs’ homicidal impulses amount to a few rather creepy sequences in this “bad science” slasher.

Way back in 2011, Sony Pictures acquired a spec script titled The Big Stone Grid, which was written by S. Craig Zahler – who is best known these days for writing and directing the films Bone Tomahawk, Brawl in Cell Block 99, and Dragged Across Concrete. As of early 2012, Michael Mann was in talks to work on script revisions with Zahler and to direct the film. The Mann take on the material didn’t come to fruition, and four years later the project moved over to Lotus Entertainment, with Pierre Morel on board to direct. Morel couldn’t get it into production, either. Eight more years down the line, World of Reel reports that Zahler is now set to direct the film himself.
Part of the reason why Zahler has gone six years without directing a new film is the fact that the project he was pursuing, Hug Chickenpenny (an adaptation of...

Doktor Death, the second spin-off in Full Moon’s Puppet Master series, aims low and hits high with its heightened addition to the small-scale horror franchise.
The killer doll genre has been around for decades, but it’s currently in the middle of a Renaissance and there’s never been a better time for the Puppet Master franchise to indulge in wild spin-off experiments. It’s been three years since the release of the last Puppet Master spin-off, Blade: The Iron Cross, and in that time there’s now two seasons of an exceptional Chucky TV series and movies like M3GAN that have pushed horror’s killer doll subgenre to exciting and challenging new places. In some respects these evolutions make something like Puppet Master: Doktor Death feel especially lackluster and irrelevant. That being said, no one who sees Doktor Death is expecting an Annabelle or M3GAN level spectacle.

[Note: With the film finally getting a physical release in the UK, here's a reposting of my review of Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich from last years festival run]
Recently divorced and reeling, Edgar returns to his childhood home to regroup his life. When Edgar finds a nefarious looking puppet in his deceased brother’s room, he decides to sell the doll for some quick cash. Girl-next-door Ashley and and comic book pal Markowitz join Edgar for a doomed road trip to an auction at a convention celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the infamous Toulon Murders. All hell breaks loose when a strange force animates the puppets at the convention, setting them on a bloody killing spree that’s motivated by an evil as old as time.
I’m going to be honest, there’s absolutely no way this review is unbiased.

Exclusive: Unannounced, the fledgling distribution label of former Works UK CEO Laurence Gornall, has picked up UK rights to the S. Craig Zahler-scripted comedy horror Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich.
The reimagining of the 1989 cult film, in which all hell breaks loose when a strange force animates the puppets up for auction at a convention, was written by Zahler (Bone Tomahawk), co-directed by Sonny Laguna and Tommy Wiklund (We Are Monsters), and produced by Dallas Sonnier (Bone Tomahawk).
Pic debuted stateside earlier this year at the Overbrook festival and had its UK premiere at Frightfest, which was attended by star Barbara Crampton. Udo Kier, Thomas Lennon, Jenny Pellicer, Nelson Franklin, Charlyne Yi and Michael Pare also star.
Unannounced, which struck the deal with Cinestate, is planning a multiple-city UK theatrical release in Q2, 2019 and will present the film under the Fangoria banner, which was recently acquired by Cinestate’s Sonnier and Amanda Presmyk.

A reboot of the now almost three decade-old Puppet Master franchise – a series which totals a mammoth 12 films at last count – The Littlest Reich will undoubtedly pique the interest of those outside of the original fanbase due to the pedigree of writing talent attached. It’s from the mind of one S. Craig Zahler, responsible for the double whammy of Brawl in Cell Block 99 and Bone Tomahawk (both if which he helmed and wrote). Zahler’s particular brand of witty wordplay, jet black humour and wincingly Ott gore is evident throughout The Littlest Reich. The film has been shepherded to the screen by the production arm of the recently resurrected Fangora brand, and like Blumhouse, there’s been real care here to ensure that horror aficionados haven’t been short-changed by an empty cash-grab exercise.

Charles Band set a precedent when he founded Full Moon Features over thirty years ago, creating a narrative blueprint that many modern horror filmmakers adhere to, and was an enduring and provocative figure during the VHS Boom of the ’80s and early ’90s. When Epic Entertainment bought the bankrupt Empire Pictures (Empire produced Ghoulies and Re-Animator), Charles, with an eye for the cultural merits of truly great cinema, founded Full Moon Features. Already familiar with studio filmmaking and the machinery surrounding it, including distribution, Band now had complete control.

Thomas Lennon has had himself quite the varied career. Dating back to his MTV sketch comedy series The State, to his days as officer Jim Dangle on Reno 911! and his many various movie roles over the years, he's kept very busy for the last two and half decades. Sometimes his movie roles are small, but in massive projects, such as his brief turn in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises. Other times, he gets to be the star of the show in a smaller but compelling movie. Such is the case with his latest work, Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich.
Puppet Master is an enduring franchise that got its start back in 1989 and, eleven sequels later, the thing was still going as of 2017 with Puppet Master: Axis Termination. Up to that point, the franchise had never been rebooted, which is pretty amazing for a horror franchise that had been running that long.

The S. Craig Zahler penned reboot Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich - now out in theaters and available on VOD and Digital HD - goes back to basics with its setting: a bunch of people in a hotel become the potential victims of a group of murderous living puppets. That classic storyline traces back to 1989, when the original Puppetmaster came out; though this time Andre Toulon’s puppets are actually Nazis and crazier than ever. Enter Tate Steinsiek, the new puppet and creature designer who, in collaboration with directors Sonny Laguna and Tommy Wiklund, managed to deliver some of the most memorable killings in the history of Charles Band and Full Moon Features’ iconic franchise. To find out how he did it, read on... ScreenAnarchy:...

Odds are, if you're old enough to remember wandering the aisles of a Blockbuster or your favorite local video store, you remember seeing near countless VHS or DVD covers for horror movies that never made it to theaters, but existed, it would seem, for the sole purpose of tempting people's curiosity. The Puppet Master franchise was a major staple in that particular department and one that is still going strong today. Now, for the first time since its inception, it's been totally rebooted with Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich. There may no longer be video stores with shelves for this movie to grace. However, if you're a horror fan who isn't easily offended and can get on board with something that can only be described as delightfully depraved, seek this out.

Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich will turn some heads, but it will surely turn more stomachs. These feel like the most crystalline goals of writer S. Craig Zahler (writer-director of Bone Tomahawk and Brawl in Cell Block 99) with his reimagining of the Puppet Master franchise, helmed by directors Sonny Laguna and Tommy Wiklund. In this alternate history, puppet crafter Andre Toulon (played by midnight-circuit specialist Udo Kier) is no longer a foe to the Nazi regime, but a Nazi himself. So when comic book creator and recent divorcee Edgar (Thomas Lennon) moves back home and finds a mysterious puppet, he heads to a convention celebrating the death of the infamous Nazi to sell it. Sure enough, Toulon’s puppet army are Nazis too, and unlike their master, very much animated. So, we have mechanical murderers in a film whose mechanics are all based on murder.

The film from directors Sonny Laguna and Tommy Wiklund has been tearing up the festival circuit and will finally arrive on VOD and in select theaters beginning August 17th, but we're just getting our first look at what's in store today. "Recently divorced and reeling, Edgar returns to his childhood home to regroup his life. When Edgar finds a nefarious looking puppet in his deceased brother's room, he decides to sell the doll for some quick cash. Girl-next-door Ashley and and comic book pal Markowitz join Edgar for a doomed road trip to an auction at a convention celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the infamous Toulon Murders.

Following its well-received screening at the 2018 Overlook Film Festival, Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich (written by Bone Tomahawk director S. Craig Zahler) was acquired for North American distribution by Rlje Films. It's been playing the festival circuit and will be getting a Us theatrical and VOD release on August 17th. Having seen the movie at Fantasia, I can say that this movie has some of the most insane and bloody kills ever put on screen, and if you want to see some of that for yourself ahead of August 17th, take a look at the newly released red band trailer:
"The reimagining of the Full Moon Features cult classic stars Thomas Lennon (TV’s “Reno 911!”), Jenny Pellicer (TV’s “Cocaine Godmother”), Nelson Franklin (TV’s “Veep”), Charlyne Yi (This is 40), Michael Pare (Eddie and the Cruisers), and Barbara Crampton (Re-Animator). "Vile and wicked." Cinestate has debuted the first official trailer for Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich, an updated reboot of the Puppetmaster horror film. The original Puppetmaster was released in 1989, about crazy animated, murderous puppets. This new film features a screenplay written by S. Craig Zahler (director of Bone Tomahawk and Brawl in Cell Block 99), along with some crazy new puppets, including a ringleader known as the "Littlest Reich". All hell breaks loose when a strange force animates the puppets up for auction at a convention, setting them on a bloody killing spree that's motivated by an evil as old as time. The film stars Michael Paré, Thomas Lennon, Charlyne Yi, Udo Kier, Nelson Franklin, Matthias Hues, Jenny Pellicer, and Barbara Crampton. This does look totally weird and violent and crazy, so have fun. Official trailer for Sonny Laguna & Tommy Wiklund's Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich, on YouTube...

The Puppet Master franchise is back in a big way, with a terrifying new installment from Rlje Films, Cinestate and most important of all, the resurrected Fangoria, who have moved beyond the magazine to producer their own movies. This is also coming straight from the demented mind that created Bone Tomahawk and one of the producers of The Meg. Today, we have a blood-soaked first trailer for Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich, and it's going to grab you by the lungs and give a good squeeze till your wheezing on the floor begging for mercy. One thing's for sure, they've managed to capture that old Full Moon magic, and it might have you feeling just a bit nostalgic while it stiffens your spine.

As a lifelong fan of the Puppet Master franchise, there was probably no movie I was looking forward to more at this year’s Cinepocalypse genre film festival than Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich, technically the 12th Puppet Master movie but one of only two (alongside Puppet Master vs. Demonic Toys) to take place outside of the continuity established in the original Full Moon franchise. My excitement level wasn’t hurt by the fact that the movie has a script by S. Craig Zahler, a score by Fabio Frizzi, and a cast that includes Barbara Crampton, Tom Lennon, Michael Paré, and Udo Kier. This promised to be the best Puppet Master yet, and my anticipation could not have been any higher.
And then I saw the movie... That’s too harsh. It’s my own fault for being really hyped up about the movie, which has sounded so fascinating on...

Avid followers of Charles Band's Puppet Master series are most likely cheering at a new reimagining coming late Summer. After thirteen films and a comic book series by Action Lab Comics, most fans saw fatigue in this producer's vision and were disappointed when the comic continuation was canceled. The curtain call was inevitable since the fan base is not huge. Exit Band and enter Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich by Sonny Laguna and Tommy Wiklund who promise to return the series back to whence it came — a product of supernatural terror. The original film dealt with a mysterious toymaker, committing suicide and providing no answers. The meat of the product was on how curiosity seekers are wanting answers to an age-old mystery. They are psychics and paranormal investigators. With the new film, the tale rests on an individual recovering from a divorce and finding a puppet he thinks can...

We didn’t see much of him on screens last year, but Oscar Isaac has been quite busy. This year, we’ll see him in the next Star Wars film, along with the George Clooney-directed Suburbicon, as well as alongside Christian Bale in The Promise next month, not to mention next year in Alex Garland’s Annihilation next year. He’s now found his next role, according to Deadline.
The Inside Llewyn Davis star is set to lead the WWII drama Operation Finale, which will be directed by Chris Weitz (About a Boy, The Twilight Saga: New Moon). Described as a drama akin to Argo and Munich, it will follow his character as an Israeli spy named Peter Malkin, who hunts down the Nazi general Adolf Eichmann, as scripted by Matthew Orton. Production is expected to begin this fall in Argentina, so we could see it by next year.
