Emmanuel Leconte

Netflix To Distribute French Documentary ‘Je Suis Charlie’
Netflix is adding another foreign title to its library. The streaming video platform will distribute the French documentary film Je Suis Charlie, thanks to a licensing deal with European arthouse sales company Pyramide International.

Directed by father-and-son duo Daniel and Emmanuel Leconte, Je Suis Charlie recounts the terrorist attack on the Charlie Hebdo magazine offices in Paris in early 2015. The Leconte team, who were close friends with cartoonists who were killed in the attack, provide several first-hand accounts about the incident, expert interviews about what led to the tragedy, and even archival footage of Charlie Hebdo editor-in-chief Charb and deceased cartoonist Cabu, who drew the prophet Muhammed on a 2006 cover of the magazine. Netflix will start streaming Je Suis Charlie on January 7, 2016, on the first anniversary of the attack. Variety originally reported the story.

Over the last few months, Netflix has worked to add more documentary-style titles for the platform’s subscribers to enjoy.

Je Suis Charlie Documentary Coming to Netflix on the Anniversary of the Attacks
Netflix has the licensing rights to stream the documentary Je Suis Charlie, Variety reports. The documentary is directed by the father-son team of Daniel and Emmanuel Leconte, with the former having directed the Charlie Hebdo docu-feature It's Hard to Be Loved by Jerks. Je Suis Charlie first premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in September and includes archival footage with deceased cartoonist Jean Cabut, better known simply as Cabu, and editor-in-chief Charb, Stéphane Charbonnier, and will attempt to contextualize the attacks that killed 12 people at the Charlie Hebdo offices in Paris. Netflix will make the documentary available on January 7, the first anniversary of the attacks.

Paris attacks: Bac, Pathé push on with 'Taj Mahal', 'Cowboys' releases
Terrorism-themed films to hit French screens in coming days.

French distributor Bac Films has decided to push on with the scheduled release of Nicolas Saada’s Taj Mahal, about the 2008 Mumbai attacks, following a deadly extremist assault on Paris on Friday.

The film, based on the true story of an 18-year-old French girl caught up in the Nov 2008 siege of Mumbai’s Taj Mahal Hotel in which 164 people were killed, will be released on Dec 2.

“Bac has decided to maintain the theatrical release of Nicolas Saada’s Taj Mahal,” Paris-based Bac confirmed in a statement.

The decision came four days after a series of attacks across Paris on Friday night at the Bataclan concert hall, four restaurants and outside the Stade de France, in which 129 people were killed and 350 people injured, many of them severely.

The bloodshed came less than a year after deadly assaults on satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and a kosher supermarket in eastern Paris in...

Copenhagen documentary festival Cph:dox has revealed the programme for its 13th edition, which runs Nov 5-15.

16 documentaries will compete in the main competition for the Dox:award, including Friedrich Moser’s journalistic docu-thriller A Good American about William Binney’s programme ‘Thinthread’ that could have prevented 9/11, but was cancelled by the Nsa, and Aslaug Holm’s Norwegian documentary Brodre, which was shot over 8 years and centres around two boys growing up.

Helena Trestikova’s Czech documentary Mallory about life at the bottom of Czech society also features in the competition, which was won last year by Joshua Oppenheimer’s The Look of Silence.

Je Suis Charlie, Toronto Film Festival, review: A powerful eulogy for the victims
This documentary directed by father-and-son team, Daniel and Emmanuel Leconte, has been sanctioned by the publishers of Charlie Hebdo and contains new interviews with staff at the scene of the shooting in January 2015. The original French title of the film, L’humour a mort, has the literal translation, “Comedy has died”, and is a more accurate description of a film that attempts to give an overview of the attacks, both in a historical context and the reaction of French society in its aftermath.

Je Suis Charlie film-makers: 'We have to put focus back on the dead'
After the Charlie Hebdo attack, debate raged over whether to print the cartoons. This misses the point, argue Daniel and Emmanuel Leconte: nobody should die for exercising their right to free speech

The attack on Charlie Hebdo in January of this year left 12 dead and 11 more injured, a massacre carried out by Saïd and Chérif Kouachi, brothers who were linked to Al-Qaida in Yemen. A movement gathered, bringing four million French people to the streets in the days following the attack. Donations of at least $18m, in what Vanity Fair called “tragedy money”, have flowed in from supporters since.

These events are covered in a new documentary, Je Suis Charlie, which premiered at the Toronto film festival this week. Directed by father-and-son team Daniel and Emmanuel Leconte, the film reuses clips from Daniel’s previous documentary, It’s Hard Being Loved By Jerks, to introduce a wider audience to...

Tiff 2015 adds to their Documentary and Vanguard lineup
The Toronto International Film Festival’s prominence on the festival circuit has only grown over the years, with films from numerous different fields having gone on to critical and commercial acclaim. Among the festival’s different categories are Tiff Docs and Vanguard. Tiff Docs allows documentaries to get their own spotlight at the festival, giving acclaimed documentarians such as Michael Moore and Frederick Wiseman a platform for their films. The Vanguard section, on the other hand, showcases films that aren’t easily categorisable into a specific genre. With the Canadian Films lineup announcement having revealed the first set of films playing in each group, Tiff today revealed more of the lineup in each section. The list of newly announced films, with their official synopses, is as follows.
