The Darkness Unleash New Song “I Hate Myself”: Stream
Image
The Darkness have released the single “I Hate Myself” from their upcoming album Dreams on Toast, out March 28th.

The song title is a bit misleading, as the tune is positively upbeat — a “joyous, raucous celebration of self-loathing” as singer Justin Hawkins described it — full of punk-rock power chords and big hooks. Hawkins’ signature falsetto is in full flight during the chorus.

“I think without regrets we stand to learn less from our experiences — to deny them and compartmentalize them is to deny ourselves an opportunity to grow,” the singer said [via a press release]. “So, it’s time for us to sing this uplifting ode to remorse in the hope that we don’t make the same mistakes again and history does not repeat itself.”

The track follows the album’s lead single “The Longest Kiss,” another tight pop-rock nugget that sees The Darkness tapping into the glam rock and power pop of the ’70s — “the elite songs,...

The Darkness Announce New Album, Drop Lead Single “The Longest Kiss”: Stream
Image
The Darkness have announced their eighth studio album, Dreams on Toast, arriving in March 2025 via Cooking Vinyl. The lead single “The Longest Kiss” is out now.

The three-minute nugget is a love letter to ’70s pop rock a la Queen, Electric Light Orchestra, and Wings. Frontman Justin Hawkins puts the full range of his voice to use on the melodic number, which features prominent piano and stylish guitar licks.

“Misty Orchards! That’s not my porn name, that’s the kind of scenery that I love,” remarked Hawkins of the track in the album press release. “I awakened to such a vista in the delightful Scottish highland town of Nairn on the morning that inspiration for ‘The Longest Kiss’ lyric struck. I was bleary eyed and locked in an unending embrace with my (mid)life partner. Weird that I can still sing, but that’s a testament to the resilience of humans,...

The Darkness’ Justin Hawkins Thinks John Frusciante Is “Overrated,” Calls His Guitar Playing “Child-Like”
Image
The Darkness singer Justin Hawkins is often outspoken on his podcast, “Justin Hawkins Rides Again,” and now he’s taken aim at Red Hot Chili Peppers’ John Frusciante, calling his guitar playing “shit” and comparing it to child-like paintings.

Hawkins’ remarks came from a recent episode of his podcast entitled “How Not to Write a Song,” in which he and guest Pat Finnerty (of the YouTube series What Makes This Song Stink) proceeded to lay into Frusciante as part of a lengthy two-hour conversation.

“My issue with Red Hot Chili Peppers is that I get nothing from John Frusciante’s guitar playing,” Hawkins said, addressing the negative comments he receives from Rhcp fans whenever he discusses the band on his podcast. “I feel like if we can call Mark Knopfler [of Dire Straits] an underrated player, I would describe John Frusciante as an overrated player. In fact, I have done that, more than once.

Father Brown actor addresses absence of three main characters from new series
Image
The absence of three characters from Father Brown has been explained by one of the show’s stars.

On Friday (6 January), the crime drama centred on Mark Williams’ crime-solving priest will return to BBC One for its 10th series.

A few months ago, a publicity shot from the new batch of episodes was released, showing Williams alongside several cast members, including John Burton, John Light and Nancy Carroll.

However, fans noticed that three people were missing: Emer Kenny, who played Bunty Windermere, Sorcha Cusack, who played Bridgette McCarthy, and Inspector Mallory actor Jack Deam.

Cusack has appeared on the show since it began in 2013, while Deam joined in 2016. Kenny jumped on board a year later.

Burton, who plays Sergeant Goodfellow, addressed their absence in a tweet, writing: “I’ve had lots (and I mean lots) of messages about the new publicity shot which shows certain characters missing from it, and...

What the ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’ celebrities have said about the Eighties classic
Bob Geldof
The festive 1984 hit “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” can usually be found on every yuletide playlist in December, despite its almost blindingly depressing lyrics.

Nearly everyone knows the story behind the song. Band Aid, an amalgamation of the biggest stars of the 1980s, was formed by Sir Bob Geldof and Ultravox frontman Midge Ure, who gathered everyone together to record the song in London to raise money for the famine in Ethiopia.

To this day, the song has raised £200m, which is well above the initial £70,000 target set by Geldof. It was so successful, in fact, that Geldof has returned to the studio several times over the following 38 years. In total, there are four versions of “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”.

With the combination of lyrics by Geldof and Ure and the voices of arguably the best singers of a generation, the 1984 song was a hit. The video...

The 10 Christmas songs we’re embarrassed to admit we love
Bob Geldof
Christmas is quickly approaching and the nation is hastily compiling playlists of the best festive bangers to get in a much-needed good mood.

While all Christmas songs are at least partly embarrassing by nature of being Christmas songs, there are some cool kids out there – your “Fairytale of New York”s, your “Christmas Wrapping”s.

The songs on this list, however, are decidedly not that. They’re cheesy, cringey and, occasionally a little bit weird, which is a mood I think you should go for over the festive period. If you’re genuinely embarrassed to be seen singing along to any of these, you’re in the right place.

Here are 10 of the best Christmas songs we’re all ashamed to admit we secretly love, perfectly timed for you to terrorise your family and friends with over the coming weeks…

Foo Fighters Open Taylor Hawkins L.A. Tribute Show With Joan Jett

Foo Fighters are in the midst of honoring their late drummer Taylor Hawkins with a tribute concert in Los Angeles at Kia Forum on Tuesday, Sept. 27. The lineup includes a bevy of Hawkins’ musician friends, some of whom performed at their tribute to him in London earlier in the month.

But before the festivities got underway, the band addressed the audience. “This is the hometown shit, so you gotta make it loud,” the Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl said. “What we really wanted to do was to pay tribute to...

See Taylor Hawkins’ Son Shane Perform Emotional ‘My Hero’ With Foo Fighters

Taylor Hawkins’ son Shane performed with Foo Fighters to deliver an emotional rendition of “My Hero” Saturday at the London tribute concert in honor of his late father.

On a night where the Foo Fighters employed a “revolving door” of all-star drummers — Travis Barker, Josh Freese, Rufus Taylor, Nandi Bushell, Omar Hakim and more — during their Wembley Stadium set, the final drummer of the evening was, fittingly, Hawkins’ 16-year-old son, who has long followed in his father’s footsteps behind the kit.

Taylor Hawkins tribute concert review, Wembley Stadium: An emotional farewell to one of rock’s most beautiful souls
Image
Taylor Hawkins was sunshine incarnate. The late Foo Fighters drummer – also a songwriter, singer and multi-instrumentalist – had an unrivalled sense of positivity and joie de vivre. His megawatt smile could power a stadium show all of its own.

The first of two tribute concerts to Hawkins, who died aged 50 in March this year, does its utmost to summon that same energy. Gathered here at Wembley Stadium are some of Hawkins’s closest friends – the surviving Foos members, of course – family, collaborators and admirers, for a six-hour marathon of a show. Understandably, the mood that fills the 80,000-capacity venue is a strange one. Hawkins’s favourite songs are played ahead of the late-afternoon start time – Abba, Elo, George Michael – but no one feels like dancing just yet.

Foos frontman Dave Grohl arrives on stage with the band to a deafening roar; it’s a few minutes before the cheering stops and...

Music who's who gather for Foo Fighters' Taylor Hawkins concert
Image
The Wembley Stadium in London witnessed an emotional tribute to the Foo Fighters drummer, Taylor Hawkins as the rock band took to stage to honour the memory of the drummer who passed away on March 25 earlier this year, reports Variety.

Two things seemed guaranteed when the great and the good of the rock world gathered at the stadium to pay tribute to the late Foo Fighters drummer, Taylor Hawkins: One, it would be emotional. And two, there would be drums.

The first Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert (the second is in Los Angeles later this month) didn’t take long to deliver on either count.

According to Variety, at 4.30 p.m. sharp (London time), the Foo Fighters emerged and, as Dave Grohl stepped up to speak, the crowd gave him a huge ovation.

As he bowed his head, the applause grew. As he looked to the heavens, a chant of “Taylor!

‘American Idol’ Winner Caleb Johnson Admits to Hating His Coronation Single: ‘It Was Just the Worst’
Caleb Michael Johnson
Ahead of the 20th anniversary of “American Idol,” Season 13 champion Caleb Johnson reflected on his coronation song, “As Long as You Love Me,” written by Justin Hawkins. Calling it a “cheesy piece of crap,” he recounted how he tried to fight the show’s producers on performing it.

“I knew that, by de facto, if you won you had to sing the song, and the song was just utter crap. Like, it was just the worst song ever,” he said in a recent interview with Insider, adding that he was “really bummed” by the circumstance.

‘Dolls’ DVD Review
Vagrant
Stars: Thomas Downey, Dee Wallace, Trinity Simpson, Bret Green, Elise Muller, Melinda DeKay, Robert R. Ryel | Written by Justin Hawkins, Josh Hawkins | Directed by Cuyle Carvin

[Note: With the film finally released in the UK this week, here's a reposting of our review of Dolls from it's Us release last Summer]

Wow. You’ve got to have some balls to name your film Dolls. You’re stepping on the toes of ther legendary Stuart Gordon right there… Even moreso when your film actually concerns killer dolls too! This particular iteration of Dolls tells the story of a struggling children’s book author and his rebellious teenage daughter who move into a house they’ve inherited and find mysterious dolls in the attic. They soon learn that the dolls have a sinister, and deadly, past.

Of course Stuart Gordon’s Dolls is not the be all and end all of killer doll movies but it is, for myself and many other genre fans, certainly one of the best examples of the genre.

‘Once Upon a Time in Deadwood’ Review
Stars: Robert Bronzi, Karin Brauns, Michael Paré, Lauren Compton, J.D. Angstadt, Woody Clendenen, Justin Hawkins, Tony Jackson, Ronnie D. Lee, Chris Matteis, George J. Merino | Written by Rene Perez, Jeff Miller | Directed by Rene Perez

The Face of Death is back…sort of. Robert Bronzi, the direct-to-video delight who looks just like Charles Bronson, is back in another low-budget genre movie. This time? Once Upon a Time in Deadwood , and no, it’s totally unrelated to Deadwood.

Starring as The Colonel, Bronzi is a no-nonsense, yet stylish six-shooter. Dressed to kill in all-black, Colonel is the anti-hero in demand in 1880s “Utah Territory”. Opening with raw gunfight, we immediately recognise Colonel as the man to reckon with, and a man with a vengeful cause. Subsequently, however, Colonel has the initial misfortune of encountering the beautiful, yet sly, Ursula (Karin Brauns). In slight homage to Escape from New York, Colonel is...

Once Upon a Time in Deadwood Trailer: Charles Bronson Lookalike Goes Wild in the Old West
Quentin Tarantino at an event for The Oscars (2013)
A riff on Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood starring the world's premiere Charles Bronson impersonator has arrived in the form of Once Upon a Time in Deadwood, which also plays off of HBO's hit series and Charles Bronson's own Once Upon a Time in the West for a trifecta of tomfoolery. Today, we have a trailer and poster for this revenge Western staring Robert Bronzi, which looks like an action-packed Fugazi, sun bleached and faded to perfection.

The new artwork and a trailer have been released for Once Upon a Time in Deadwood, the new revenge western feature starring Robert Bronzi (recent hit Death Kiss) and Michael Pare (Streets of Fire) that comes out October 1st in the U.S. The story concerns a notorious gunslinger who is slipped a slow-acting poison by an heiress and told he has three days to track down and rescue her sister,...

Escape from Death Block 13 Trailer: Fake Charles Bronson Is Back and Ready to Kill
Charles Bronson
You'll believe Charles Bronson is back from the dead...Or not. It's hard to say how ethical it is to keep pumping out new action movies with a spot-on Charlie lookalike, but Robert Bronzi is certainly making a career out of it. We have the first official trailer for his latest action thriller Escape from Death Block 13. And if you squint really hard, or quick chug a couple shots of shoe polish, you'll believe you're actually watching a long lost action masterpiece starring Charles Bronson himself.

"Bronzi is back!" Screams the tagline on Escape from Death Block 13, which is a solid throwback to the gritty action thrillers of yesteryear. It perfectly recalls John Carpenter's Assault on Precinct 13 and Charles Bronson's own Death Wish. The new prison action feature stars Robert Bronzi, who was last seen in Death Kiss. And he's obviously changed his name to give himself more of a Bronson vibe.
