10 Movies That Aren’t Worth Watching Again After You Know Their Twist
Image
In Hollywood, a lot of directors have built their careers on their twist endings, from M. Night Shyamalan's The Sixth Sense to Bryan Singer's The Usual Suspects. These endings can make the audience leave the movie still thinking about its themes and message years after seeing it. Unfortunately, not every movie achieves this, and there's no shortage of criticism of directors who try too hard to be subversive, only to undermine their film.

A good twist should compel the viewer to immediately want to revisit the story to pick up on small details and clues as they go. For a variety of reasons, some movies simply aren't good enough to warrant that second viewing. Sometimes, it's the twist itself that hurts the film, while others are just too weak for another watch regardless of how good the twist is. Either way, these movies show that subverting expectations doesn't...

Spanish cycling legend Federico Bahamontes passes away
Image
Madrid (Spain), Aug 8 (Ians) Federico Bahamontes, the celebrated Spanish cyclist, passed away on Tuesday. He was 95.

Recognised as the first Spaniard to win the Tour de France in 1959, with subsequent second and third-place finishes in 1963 and 1964 respectively, and claiming the best climber’s jersey six times, Bahamontes earned the moniker “Eagle of Toledo.”

Carlos Velazquez, the Mayor of Toledo, announced the news of his demise, Xinhua reported.

Bahamontes also holds the distinction of being the first cyclist to win the mountain jersey in all three Grand Tours: France, Italy, and Spain. In 2013, a panel organized by the ‘L’Equipe’ sports newspaper dubbed him the greatest climber in Tour de France history.

“We deeply mourn the passing of Federico Martin Bahamontes, the Eagle of Toledo: an iconic figure in sports who raised our city’s name to unparalleled heights. The first Spaniard to win the Tour de France, he is etched in...

Dean Devlin’s fledgling Us distribution operation has taken all North American rights for The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea starring Jason Sudeikis, Jessica Biel and Maisie Williams. Content Media represents international rights in Cannes.

The film premiered at The Tribeca Film Festival last month and is set for a theatrical release later this year. The story centres on a grieving father who rediscovers his faith in life when he helps a young girl on a quest.

Electric Entertainment’s head of domestic distribution Zac Reeder brokered the deal with vice-president of development Ben Kim and Wme Global on behalf of the film-makers.

The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea will mark the second film to go out via Electric’s domestic distribution arm after Blackway, which will debut day-and-date theatrically and on VOD on June 10.

Looking to get her life back on track, desperate mom Streak (Louisa Krause) takes a job as an overnight security guard in a grand but abandoned (The Abandoned being the film’s original title) apartment complex. Trapped with no-one to talk to but asshole colleague Cooper (Jason Patric), Streak is in for a long night.

The awful company and terrible hours aren’t the only thing Streak has to worry about – there’s the sinister homeless guy, the CCTV not working properly and, well, whatever it is that’s lurking in the building’s corridors, stalking her and Cooper from the shadows. Already on edge, Streak is pushed to her limit and beyond by supernatural (?) terrors, both real and...

2015 Sundance Film Festival Predictions List: An Introduction
Whether you are a filmmaker, or one of the Sundance programmers whose task it is to identify the films that make up a line-up, it is indeed the most wonderful, panic-filled and nerve racking time of the year. The 31st edition of the Sundance Film Festival kicks off on January 22nd with Park City and Salt Lake City playing host to some of the more innovative, thought-provoking narrative and non-fiction films of 2015. Last year, a Jenga tall order of 4,057 features and 8,161 shorts were submitted. Now let’s think about those numbers for a second.

Twenty years ago, Terry Zwigoff’s Crumb claimed the Grand Jury Prize Documentary award, Living in Oblivion‘s Tom Dicillo was honored with the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award, and Edward Burns’ micro-budgeted The Brothers McMullen (there is a read-worthy, lively, eleventh hour account on how it was submitted to the fest in Ted Hope’s “Hope...

2015 Sundance Film Festival Predictions: Jordan Galland’s Ava’s Possessions
I originally took notice of the project when the trades announced that the oft-used supporting indie starlet Louisa Krause (non-related pic above — who we interviewed back in the day for Martha Marcy May Marlene) was the featured “potential screamer” lead on this project. Filmmaker Jordan Galland has flirted with Park City before, his debut Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Undead (2009) received a special screening status at Slamdance. Along with his sophomore film item Alter Egos (2012), the summer shot Brooklyn set Ava’s Possessions basically informs us that the musician slash filmmaker’s interests lie within the framework of the horror genre. Certainly the addition of supporting players include Lou Taylor Pucci, Jemima Kirke, Stella Schnabel (You Wont Miss Me) and John Ventimiglia amps up the end product, and Galland’s ongoing creative collaboration with musician Sean Lennon might earmark the project as an appointment with the occult that avoids trappings of...

Alter Egos (2012) Teaser Trailer: Jordan Galland, Kris Lemche
Alter Egos Trailer. Jordan Galland‘s Alter Egos (2012) teaser trailer stars Kris Lemche, Brooke Nevin, Joey Kern, and Danny Masterson. Alter Egos’ plot synopsis: “At a time when superheroes have lost government funding and public support, a superhero meets a girl who can help him overcome his own emotional crisis.”

This film reminds me of Vs but without the edge. I can’t believe the main hero’s name is Fridge. That is almost as stupid as Splash Down from The Incredibles.

My favorite part of the Alter Egos teaser trailer:

You’ve got some nerve. Breaking up with me in an email. Who do you think you are? Batman?

So funny. His girlfriend was cheating on him with himself…his alter ego.

Alter Egos also stars Christine Evangelista, John Ventimiglia, Adam LeFevre, Kristina Klebe, Sean Lennon, Geneva Carr, Marina Squerciati, Carmen Goodine, Daniel Sauli, and Carlos Velazquez.
