Madonna Biopic Blond Ambition Is Happening at Universal
The early eighties was the perfect place for an artist like Madonna. The birth of MTV gave exposure to musicians that was unprecedented at the time, turning artists into TV stars overnight. Madonna was part of an elite few that benefitted the most from MTV's enormous influence as she went on to sell millions of albums, star in Hollywood films, and become an icon to women all over the world. Fast-forward to 2017 and a biopic of Madonna's early years is set to be produced.

The script entitled Blond Ambition written by Elyse Hollander topped the 2016 Black List of unproduced screenplays and has been bought by Universal Pictures as reported by the Hollywood Reporter. Michael De Luca who produced Fifty Shades of Grey for Universal and Brett Ratner have signed on to produce Blond Ambition along with John Zaozirny. Hollander had previously worked as an assistant to Alejandro G. Inarritu during...

Universal pick up Madonna Biopic Blond Ambition
Author: Zehra Phelan

She may still be alive and kicking but the ultimate Lucky Star Madonna is all set to get her very own biopic after Universal has picked up Elyse Hollander’s script which takes the title from the megastar’s 1990 world tour Blond Ambition.

The story, which is to be set in early 80’s New York, will see Madonna Louise Ciccone working on her first album, struggling in a business that treats women badly, while also dealing with a burgeoning love life and the first hints of fame.

Only last year, Hollander’s script topped the 2016 Black List, the industry ranking that tracks Hollywood’s most-liked unproduced screenplays so it was only a matter of sitting back and waiting for the right (or best) offer to land in her hands and it couldn’t much bigger than Universal. Considering this is Hollander’s debut script after working alongside Alejandro G.

A Madonna Biopic is in the Works!
Chris here with some news to have you clutching your layered pearls. And stacked bracelets. And lace. That's right, a Madonna biopic is now in development at Universal. Whether you like it or not, get ready for Blonde Ambition.

Now before we cry foul or "too soon", the film sounds like less of a traditional biopic and more of a moment in time for the legend. Elyse Hollander's script topped last year's Black List (Hollywood's annual list of best unproduced screenplays) and follows the making of Madonna's first self-titled album. This would set the film in the early eighties before "Like A Virgin" skyrocketed her profile, but still in the era of "Lucky Star", "Borderline", and "Holiday". What will it be like to see club scene Madonna on the screen rather than the megastar? Will something like Truth or Dare have stylistic influence?

Word's out on what Madonna herself thinks about the film,...

'Furious 8': First Day With the Team Together [Video]
Furious 7 exceeded all expectation when it hit theaters last year. Sure, given actor Paul Walker's untimely and tragic death, it was expected that many would pay their ticket just to see how the series would pay homage to its lead, but no one expected it to do the numbers it did. By the end of its theater run, the film took in over $1.5 billion worldwide, currently placing it at number six in all time worldwide box office grosses.

That's definitely a lot of pressure going into Furious 8, which will only be the second film not to feature Paul Walker. But the production has moved forward with the rest of the cast intact and Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Gray at the helm. When all said and done, the franchise seems to be in safe hands.

Production for Furious 8 has been underway for the past few months, though...

Ep Noah Hawley Wants to Make a Surreal Story With 'Legion'
No doubt about it. We live in a world where comic books and superheroes are mainstream and saturated in Hollywood, so much so that many are starting to see these stories as predictable and formulaic. But in reality, those types of stories only scratch the surface of what's available in the comic books, which are generally able to take greater storytelling risks than films. This superhero craze has also bled over into television, and with series like Daredevil and The Flash, filmmakers are able to explore different aspects of the properties that could never be shown on the big screen. This is also something that executive producer Noah Hawley hopes to do with the upcoming FX series, Legion.

In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Hawley expressed his interest to take the genre in a whole new direction. Rather than go the traditional route, he almost wants to deal more...

Olivia Munn Wants 'X-force' Movie With Psylocke and Deadpool
The X-men have always been one of the more interesting of the superhero film franchises. Whereas most of them back in the day featured maybe a couple supers, the X-men films were chock-full of mutants -- both good and bad. In a way, they were team-up films before team-up films were a thing. Nowadays, Fox has effectively split up their X-men into three separate properties: X-men, Wolverine, and Deadpool. If all continues as planned, they'll eventually add New Mutants and Gambit to the mix, and if Deadpool continues its hot streak, we seem destined for an X-force film series as well. This opens the floodgates for all kinds of characters, including one we just saw in X-men: Apocalypse.

I'm speaking, of course, of Psylocke, played by Olivia Munn. While the character didn't get a whole lot to do in the most recent film, that's not to say her role in...

Classic Experimental Short Film: Lullaby
Video memories and nostalgia blur together in Jennifer Reeder‘s classic installation piece, Lullaby, in which personal footage of ’80s cheerleading tryouts and ballet classes is set to a heavily slowed down and distorted version of Madonna’s early hit, Lucky Star.

Media appropriation in underground film has existed since the 1960s, but in 1999 — when Reeder produced Lullaby — combining personal and popular video sources was not a particularly common practice, especially given the cruddy quality of the analog equipment of the time.

However, Reeder brilliantly exploits that cruddiness by not hiding it and even calling attention to it through several methods, such as slowing down the footage intensely; keeping the bad tracking distortions of the VHS tape; and especially by heavily distorting the Lucky Star soundtrack. This manipulation works to let the audience know that we are looking at an artifact of a bygone era and acts as a commentary...
