8 Years After Flopping, Jamie Foxx's Forgotten Action Thriller Is a Streaming Hit
Image
Jamie Foxx has starred in many successful films, but not every one hits the mark. One of his less successful films is 2017's action thriller Sleepless, which is getting a second chance thanks to streaming.

A remake of the 2011 French film Sleepless Night, the movie was a massive critical and commercial failure. However, FlixPatrol reports that Sleepless has become a streaming hit eight years later on Paramount+.Sleepless has debuted in 10th place on Paramount+'s Top 10 movies chart in the United States, just behind Training Day.

The 2011 original was a massive success. Sleepless Nights boasted a near-perfect score from the critics, who gave it 97% approval, and an encouraging 72% score from the audience on Rotten Tomatoes. The film debuted at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival to positive reviews, although it wasn't a big commercial hit. Sleepless Nights starred Tomer Sisley, Adel Bencherif, Julien Boisselier, Serge Riaboukine and Pom Klementieff. Frédéric Jardin directed,...

Quick LinksThe Story of A ProphetWhat Makes A Prophet Such a Beloved Film?An American Remake of A Prophet Was Nearly Made

When most people think of crime or gangster films, they might think of classic Hollywood portrayals like Goodfellas or Reservoir Dogs, but they rarely include any films from outside the realm of Hollywood as part of the conversation. If the Best Picture win for Bong Joon Ho's Parasite at the 2020 Oscars has served as any indication, it's that some of the most well-made films in the world happen to come from overseas. For any fans of the crime genre, the Academy Award-nominated French film, A Prophet (or Un prophète) is an absolute must-watch. Since its release, A Prophet has gone on to gain a reputation as being one of the best French films ever made. It's a film that has plenty of thought-provoking drama and thrills going for...

The series, which combines Rocky with Warrior and centers on a young Mma fighter who gets a shot at the big time, has proven to be divisive among both critics and audiences alike, but no doubt many will be pleased to see that, this time, the dreaded Netflix ax did not fall.

The news of a Season 2 renewal for The Cage was revealed thanks to the official X/Twitter account for Netflix France, which declared, “The Fight Continues—The Cage Season 2 Confirmed!” Released onto the platform on November 8, the series has seen a surge in popularity, garnering 17.40 million views and taking over the top spot in the charts from the critically acclaimed anime series, Arcane.

Image
Canneseries, the French Riviera-set festival dedicated to international drama series, will kick off Oct. 8 with “All The Way Up” (“Validé), a half-hour show taking place in the French rap scene.

“All The Way Up” was created and directed by Franck Gastambide (“Taxi 5”) who also stars in the series. Studiocanal represents “All The Way Up” in international markets.

Albin Lewi, the artistic Director of Canneseries, pointed out the first season of the show was expected to premiere at Canneseries last year but “the health conditions have chosen differently.”

“The series received the Audience Award in Canneseries in 2020; since then, we wanted to welcome the second season for the 2021 edition,” said Lewi.

War of the Worlds Season 2 Episode 2 Review: Why Do the Invaders Hate Humans?
Image
Warning: this War of the Worlds review contains spoilers.

Careful what you wish for. In its first season, War of the Worlds came under fire for its deliberately meditative pace. It was just too sparse for some. They found the journeys too slow and the revelations too few and far between. Season two appears to have addressed that complaint by turning up the dial. Episode one upended a barrel of plot all over viewers’ heads, and episode two has done the same, leaving us swimming in the stuff.

This week, there were name-character deaths, an armed attack, a big family reunion, a pregnancy, two break-ups, two assassination attempts and a sibling murder around which a conspiracy was formed. No sooner had one event happened than the next came along. There was no chance of getting bored, but also little time left for reflection.

In the rush to set up the characters in their new configuration,...

‘Supergirl’ Star Azie Tesfai Suits Up As Guardian In First Look Photo (TV News Roundup)
Image
The CW released the first look at Azie Tesfai’s Guardian, who will appear in the sixth and final season of “Supergirl.”

Kelly Olsen (Tesfai) will take on the mantle of Guardian in the second half of the final season. The series previously hinted that Kelly will take up the mantle left by her brother, James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks), which will come to fruition in the upcoming episode “Blind Spots.” Co-written by Tesfai and co-producer J. Holtham, the episode is said to address racial inequality. “Arrow” star David Ramsey will direct the episode and reprise his role of John Diggle.

“Supergirl” follows the DC character Kara Zor-El (Melissa Benoist), who balances her work as a reporter for CatCo Worldwide Media with keeping National City safe from sinister threats as the titular superhero. The series also stars Tesfai, David Harewood, Jesse Rath, Nicole Maines and Katie McGrath. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter,...

War of the Worlds Season 2 Filming Now
Image
Eerie, desolate sci-fi series War of the Worlds aired in France in late 2019 and earlier this year in the Us and UK. Less an adaptation of the titular H.G. Wells novel than a contemporary riff on the alien invasion thriller by creator Howard Overman, it resolutely ploughed its own furrow. Moody, atmospheric, bleak and emotional, it swapped red weed, tripods and heat rays for a grief-soaked meditation on family and survival… with terrifying alien robot sniper dogs.

The series’ second run commission has been an open secret for months, but the official stamp was announced this weekend, with filming due to begin on Monday the 13th of July after a dry run of the new Covid-19 filming protocol took place last Friday.

Deadline, speaking to Urban Myth producer Johnny Capps reported on the meticulous planning and procedures in place to film the second series in the midst of a global coronavirus pandemic.

War of the Worlds Episode 7 Review
Gabriel Byrne and Daisy Edgar-Jones in War of the Worlds (2019)
This War of the Worlds review contains spoilers.

War of the Worlds Episode 7

What was absent from War of the Worlds’ atmospheric early episodes – distinguishable characters, convincing relationships and human warmth – is in good supply at this end of the series. Back then, with a global invasion to stage and a quadrupedal alien menace to establish, there wasn’t also room for the kind of intimate two-person scenes that made up most of this episode. With the survivors ensconced together in just a few locations, the creators have made good use of the opportunity to build intimacy.

We saw that this week in Catherine and Sophia’s relationship, which was made to feel satisfyingly lived-in. The introduction of Sophia’s new charge Theo offered a plausible route to reflection on their own past in which Catherine had to raise Sophia after their parents died. Nothing was overplayed and the performances were kept subtle,...

This War Of The Worlds review contains spoilers.

War of the Worlds Episodes 1 and 2

No ‘The’. That’s how to distinguish this TV version of H.G. Wells’ alien invasion classic from the one that aired late last year. That was The War Of The Worlds, this one’s just War Of The Worlds – no definite article, more casual, more approachable, more modern.

Of course, as a French-us co-production, they might have gone with La War Of The Worlds, but that would just have been silly.

There is nothing silly about this opening double-bill. It’s deathly serious, a paranoid invasion thriller that rivals even the Six O’Clock news in its evocation of dread. It’s so sombre, in fact, that watching it is almost a relief, given our current situation. To finally see the world fall apart and any semblance of normality poof into the air as people...

Behind the Scenes With Gabriel Byrne, Elizabeth McGovern on ‘War of the Worlds’
Gabriel Byrne
“To carry a secret is a great thing,” says Gabriel Byrne, reflecting on his latest role. “You never have to show the secret, because the audience knows it… and they’ll do the work for you in that situation.”

The actor was doing press rounds for a new, and very loose adaptation of “War of the Worlds,” from Urban Myth, Canal Plus, Fox Networks Group Europe & Africa, Agc Television, and Studiocanal – a powerful combination – which updates H.G. Wells’ alien invasion novel by grounding the story in the here-and-now and by focusing more on character than on spectacle.

Functioning instead as a survival thriller set in both England and France, the eight-episode series follows a diverse group living in the aftermath of a cataclysmic attack that has wiped out most life on Earth.

Written and created by BAFTA winner Howard Overman (“Misfits”) and produced by Urban Myth Films, the sci-fi...

‘The War of the Worlds’ Trailer Drops From the BBC (Watch)
The BBC has dropped a trailer for its upcoming adaptation of H.G. Wells’ alien-invasion classic, “The War of the Worlds.”

Set in Edwardian England, in the southern English county of Surrey, the three-part series stars Rafe Spall (“Jurassic World: Fallen Kingfom”), Eleanor Tomlinson (“Poldark”), Rupert Graves (“Sherlock”) and Robert Carlyle (“The Full Monty”) as earthlings caught up in the panic after a meteor bearing extermination-minded aliens lands in the usually placid British countryside. Craig Viveiros directs.

The series will be broadcast on flagship channel BBC One this fall. ITV Studios has sold the show to major European countries and more than 50 African territories.

Spall plays George, a man who escapes his failing marriage to begin a new life with Amy (Tomlinson), despite societal disapproval. Graves plays George’s brother and Carlyle an astronomer.

The production is one of two warring “War of the Worlds” TV adaptations. The other, spanning eight episodes,...

UK Trailer for Crime Thriller 'Close Enemies' with Kateb & Schoenaerts
"I don't talk to cops." "Without me, you're dead." Signature Ent. in the UK has debuted an official UK trailer for the crime thriller Close Enemies, also known as Frères Ennemis in French. Funded by Belgium and France, the film is about two childhood friends who ended up on opposite sides of society - one of them is now a cop, the other is working his way up in a crime syndicate. Matthias Schoenaerts plays Manuel, who "chose to embrace the thug life", while Reda Kateb plays Driss, who is now a top cop. When Manuel's biggest deal goes terribly wrong, the two men meet again and come to realize they both need each other to survive in their worlds. This premiered at the Venice Film Festival last year, and it also played at Fantastic Fest, so it definitely has some clout. It's a solid film but nothing new. The cast includes Adel Bencherif,...

War of the Worlds TV Series Set, Gabriel Byrne and Elizabeth McGovern to Star
Joseph Baxter Jan 29, 2019

Yet another television adaptation of H.G. Wells’s War of the Worlds is in the works, this time from Fox Networks Group.

War of the Worlds, the template-setting 1898 alien invasion sci-fi novel by H.G. Wells, has certainly seen its share of adaptations over its century-plus existence; a multi-medium collection that will soon add a promising miniseries by the BBC. However, Urban Myth Films is prepping its own television take on the classic story of extraterrestrial conflagration. Moreover, the series has procured a pair of prestigious stars for its effort.

Gabriel Byrne and Elizabeth McGovern will headline a War of the Worlds television series. This adaptation – arriving as eight 60-minute episodes – puts Wells’s story through the lens of modernization, manifesting as a contemporary-set reimagining of the tale; a stark distinction from the BBC miniseries, which adapts a more traditional setting for the story in the brief 1901-1910 era of Edwardian England.

David Oelhoffen at an event for Far from Men (2014)
Venice Film Review: ‘Close Enemies’ (Frères Ennemis)
David Oelhoffen at an event for Far from Men (2014)
David Oelhoffen’s last film, which played in competition in Venice in 2014, was called “Far From Men,” but was characterized by a lean, craggy, proto-Western narrative that metaphorically lashed its two stars, Viggo Mortensen and Reda Kateb, close together for the duration. By contrast, his newest feature, which also landed a competition slot in Venice, has the English title “Close Enemies” but keeps its tussling main characters — again each on opposite sides of the law, and this time played by Kateb and Matthias Schoenaerts — far apart for most of the running time.

That’s an irony it would be easy to dismiss if it didn’t also speak to this film’s fatal flaw: While the frictive tension is palpable between Schoenaerts’ bulked-up, doggedly loyal drug runner and Kateb’s soulfully buttoned-down, conflicted cop in their few scenes together, for the most part, their destinies run in frustrating parallel, never...

Ryan Gosling at an event for Lost River (2014)
‘Close Enemies’ Review: Gritty Crime Drama Boasts a Strong Matthias Schoenaerts, but Not Much Else — Venice
Ryan Gosling at an event for Lost River (2014)
Now that Ryan Gosling has moved on from projects like “Only God Forgives” and “The Place Beyond the Pines,” Matthias Schoenaerts has emerged as the cinematic ideal of fractured masculinity. Physically imposing but emotionally scarred, his characters — whether in “Bullhead,” “Rust and Bone,” or “Disorder” — bring depth and dimension to the strong, silent type. He continues that streak in David Oelhoffen’s “Close Enemies,” which calls on the actor to once again portray a hardened criminal at his most vulnerable — and not much else that you haven’t already seen him do.

This is one of those crime dramas you know won’t end well, especially after the early reveal that Manu’s (Schoenaerts) close friend Irmane (Adel Bencherif) is acting as an informant for narcotics officer Driss (Reda Kateb). Having grown up in the same rough-and-tumble neighborhood as the two of them, the detective’s loyalties are divided between...

When his son is kidnapped and the drug dealer demands the return of what was stolen, the cop must figure out how to get the drugs into the right hands, protect his son and keep his secret from the other police officers who are on his tail. It looks as if it is going to be a long, sleepless night.

Sleepless Night shows us that French people can be badass too. Others have compared this film to Die Hard, which is understandable as there are many similarities.

Point Blank Blu-ray Review
Every once in a while it’s nice to have a pleasant surprise, and 2010’s Point Blank - the French film with the title of a great American movie – is one of those surprises – it’s a really good action film. Perhaps it owes something to the Luc Besson school of French filmmaking with an eye toward Hollywood, or perhaps it’s in response to Besson’s repeated production of low budget action films. Regardless, writer/director Fred Cavayé delivers the goods. Gilles Lellouche, Roschdy Zem, Gérard Lanvin and Elena Anaya star in this pot-boiler about an innocent male nurse (Lellouche) who gets caught between a criminal (Zem) and corrupt police. Our review of Point Blank on Blu-ray follows after the jump. The film starts with Zem’s Hugo Sartet running from a botched job. He’s being chased by two men, and runs into traffic and is hit by a motorcycle.

Director: Frédéric Jardin Writer: Nicolas Saada Starring: Tomer Sisley, Joey Starr, Julien Boisselier, Serge Riaboukine, Laurent Stocker, Samy Seghir, Dominique Bettenfeld, Adel Bencherif, Birol Ünel, Lizzie Brocheré In the time span of a brutally intense 24 hours -- including a sleepless night for everyone involved in the film -- director Frédéric Jardin's Sleepless Night begins with a drug heist gone horribly awry and snowballs into a relentless powerhouse of non-stop action from that point onward. In a tale in which there are very few good guys and countless shades of baddies, it is difficult to surmise where the protagonist, Vincent (Tomer Sisley), falls. As fate would have it, Vincent possesses a bag of cocaine that was stolen from two cronies employed by a local drug lord named Marciano (Serge Riaboukine). Review: A Prophet
This is the Pure Movies review of A Prophet, directed by Jacques Audiard and starring Tahar Rahim, Niels Arestrup, Adel Bencherif, Hichem Yacoubi, Reda Kateb and Jean-Philippe Ricci. Reviewed by award-winning screenwriter Garth Twa. There’s something like a birth at the beginning of Jacques Audiard’s new film, A Prophet. We glimpse a confusing world of disembodied sounds and blurry, obscured images, like we’ve just arrived, like we’re seeing things through a sack on a hostage’s head, or, indeed, a fallopian tube. Malik (Tahar Rahim) appears in this prison which is the whole world, like a newborn, with no discernable past. He is has no friends, no family, no religion that he seems conscious of, Euro-less, illiterate. He’s been sentenced to six years, though we never find out what for. Everything he is, which isn’t much, and everything he’ll become, which is formidable,...

Un prophète (2009)
Without a doubt, Jacques Audiard's Un prophète is bound to become a classic of crime drama. Obviously, this French film doesn't reinvent the genre of films that take place in prisons. However, the film astonishes because it manages to put substance over useless grittiness.

The story introduces us to Malik (Tahar Rahim), an illiterate nineteen-year-old boy of Arabic heritage who was sentenced to six years. On the day he becomes considered as an adult by French laws, Malik is transferred to a prison for adults. Once inside, Malik has the feeling that he doesn't fit in. Indeed, despite his heritage, Malik is not accepted by the prisoners of Arabic heritage, because he's not much of a Muslim.

Then enters César Luciani (Niels Arestrup), the leader of a group of convicts who are members of the Corsican mafia. Obviously, César takes Malik under his wing and guarantees him protection. In exchange for that,...

Blu-Ray Review: French Drama ‘A Prophet’ Demands Your Attention
Chicago – One of the best films of the last several years was recently released on Blu-ray and DVD courtesy of Sony Pictures Classics in the riveting, remarkable, and simply amazing “A Prophet.” The winner of dozens of international awards and an Oscar nominee for Best Foreign Language Film, “A Prophet” is only starting to make waves stateside. As more and more people catch on to the film through its Blu-ray and DVD release and word-of-mouth spreads, the film will develop the following it deserves. Movies This good always do.

Blu-Ray Rating: 5.0/5.0

What’s so remarkable about “A Prophet”? Let the hyperbole begin. No film has ever documented the transformation a man goes through from a simple thug to a notorious criminal in the same naturalistic, riveting detail as this one. Sure, “GoodFellas” is a masterpiece, but that’s a more stylized film. “A Prophet” captures something natural about how so...
