5 Songs With ‘Forever’ Music Supervisor Kier Lehman
Image
Music supervisor is a job that is part professional music nerd, part aural detective and part crate-digging business affairs exec. 5 Songs is a Deadline series that highlights the work of these below the line workers through songs and stories.

Forever is an adaptation of the 1975 Judy Blume novel, but set in Los Angeles rather than New Jersey. It tells the story of two young athletes, played by Justin Edwards and Keisha Clark, who reunite, after going to grade school together, and fall in love but face the pressure of sports, academics and college prep.

From Mara Brock Akil, the series, which has already been renewed for a second season, features a lot of music, particularly songs from L.A.-based artists that were on the scene in 2018.

“We’re making sure that we’re representing the key moments and key artists from that time period that really tell the story...

‘Forever’ Star Michael Cooper Jr. Is Taking It All in
Image
Newcomer Michael Cooper Jr.’s experience on Mara Brock Akil’s coming-of-age drama Forever has been life-changing.

Based on the 1975 Judy Blume novel of the same name and told through a modern lens, the eight-episode Netflix series is an exploration of young love. Cooper plays Justin Edwards, an inexperienced and somewhat awkward L.A. teenager.

“One line Mara wrote in the script was that he has one foot in confidence and the other foot in insecurity,” Cooper tells The Hollywood Reporter over a Zoom call, explaining his character who also plays on his high school basketball team. “I thought that was so beautiful that I was able to layer that in the show. To see [him] grow throughout was really special. That was a treat, as an actor, that Mara gave me.”

After modest parts in 2022’s On the Come Up and The Inhabitant, a character as resonant as Justin marks...

‘Black Lives Matter’ Inspired a Key Storyline in Netflix’s ‘Forever’ in Its Boldest Move in Donald Trump Era
Image
Netflix just dropped yet another banger of a series, Forever, and it is more than just winning the hearts of fans and critics worldwide. Created by Mara Brock Akil, the adolescent drama is a modern reimagination of Judy Blume’s titular 1975 novel about the intensity of teenage love and s-x, one even inspired by ‘Black Lives Matter’.

For one, while Brock Akil is credited for race-swapping the leads to bring about a more searing portrait of Black kids instead of focusing on White kids the way Blume did, she also took the perfect inspiration from the BLM movement for a key storyline that might as well be recognized to be its boldest move in the Donald Trump-era.

‘Black Lives Matter’ inspired this bold plotline in Netflix’s Forever Lovie Simone and Michael Cooper Jr. in a still from Forever. | Credits: Netflix.

Has Forever Been Renewed For Season 2? (Photo Credit – Netflix)

Judy Blume’s Forever didn’t need much time to make its presence felt. The romantic drama was locked at the top of the platform’s charts in less than a week after landing on Netflix. According to MovieWeb, the show edged over You and The Four Seasons to hold the top place in Netflix’s TV chart. This kind of debut usually doesn’t go unnoticed. Netflix handed the show a swift Season 2 renewal, a rare move considering how tight-lipped the streamer usually is with early renewals.

‘Forever’ creator Mara Brock Akil on updating Judy Blume — and finding ‘real intimacy’ — in the age of social media
Image
Since its publication in 1975, Judy Blume's young adult novel Forever... has stirred controversy for its frank exploration of teenage sexuality. By the same token, it's been an important touchstone for young readers navigating the thorny terrain of first love. It was an important book for Mara Brock Akil, a TV veteran who has re-interpreted it for Netflix for a new adolescent audience.

"Judy Blume was a first for me as a reader," Akil tells Gold Derby. "I think I became a writer because I was a reader first, and I was immersed in her world." Forever, which explores two teenagers navigating sex and intimacy for the first time, had a particular impact on Akil and her friends because "someone was willing to tell us the truth." Blume's book served as "our modern-day internet" for its young readers, explaining love, dating, and everything that comes with it. So when...

Netflix just renewed one of its newest teen hits everyone’s talking about
Image
On May 14, Netflix held its third-ever upfront event, where the streaming giant announced several renewals for some of its fan-favorite shows and new series. One of the new shows to receive a renewal was Forever, a teen series that has quickly gained popularity since its debut last week. Forever season 2 is officially happening at Netflix!

This renewal comes as somewhat of a surprise, seeing as though the show's first season was just released a week ago. Netflix doesn't usually hand out renewals this quickly, especially for its new series. The streaming service typically waits to gauge audience response, completion rates, and overall viewership data before making a decision. This early renewal of Forever suggests the show has performed strongly out of the gate, generating enough buzz and engagement to justify a second season so soon.

As of May 15, Forever is one of the most popular shows on Netflix at the...

Forever delivers the Black coming-of-age love story we’ve all been waiting for
Image
The one teen show you're not watching and should be is Forever on Netflix. All eight episodes of the first season are now available to stream. It might seem like your typical teen series on the surface, but it offers something far more profound. Beneath the romance and high school drama, Forever delivers a heartfelt, deeply authentic Black coming-of-age story, something I'd argue we don't see enough of in mainstream media. The teen love story is just the icing on the cake, and it's so relatable in the way it captures the messiness of first love, the insecurities of growing up, and the pressures of trying to figure out who you are in a world full of expectations.

I can't emphasize enough how incredible this new Netflix show is, and all credit goes to its creator, Mara Brock Akil. She took Judy Blume's iconic 1975 novel and transformed it into a modern,...

Set in Los Angeles, this teen romantic drama stars Lovie Simone and Michael Cooper Jr. as Keisha and Justin, two young athletes and old childhood friends who reconnect at a New Year’s Eve party in 2017. This fateful night ignites a passionate romance and launches them into an emotional journey through the ups and downs of first love.

Across eight episodes, viewers witness Keisha and Justin’s love story unfold as they navigate the tender, complicated, and...

Mara Brock Akil’s Take on Judy Blume’s ‘Forever’ Is the ‘Girlfriends’ Creator’s Finest Work: TV Review
Image
Inspired by Judy Blume’s groundbreaking 1975 novel and reimagined by visionary writer/ producer Mara Brock Akil, Netflix’s latest limited series, “Forever,” is an exquisite journey of love, becoming and the beautiful wonder and anguish of teenhood. The show is set in Los Angeles in 2018 and follows two teenagers navigating their final high school years. Track star Keisha Clark (Lovie Simone) is laser-focused on earning a scholarship to Howard University, whereas Justin Edwards (Michael Cooper Jr.) — a basketball player trying to manage his Adhd — is torn between the vision his parents have for him and the dreams he hasn’t quite discovered for himself. A chance encounter between the pair at a New Year’s Eve party sparks an infatuation that shifts their hearts and lives. “Forever” offers something rarely seen on television (or anywhere): a whole, nuanced and exceptional showcase of first love through the eyes of two young Black people.

Forever Review — Reimagined Judy Blume Adaptation Makes For A Bittersweet Romance
Image
I’ll admit I didn’t really know what to make of Forever going into it. Regrettably, Judy Blume is one of my childhood literature blind spots, so I can’t really speak to how the series works as an adaptation of the novel beyond modernizing the story from 1975 to 2018.

But I am a sucker for a good coming-of-age story and this show certainly delivers on that front. An equal parts heartwarming and heartbreaking tale of young love, self-discovery, and how we move past the hardest parts of our lives.

The plot

At a New Year’s Eve party during junior year of high school, struggling basketball hopeful Justin Edwards, played by Michael Cooper Jr., has a chance encounter with his childhood friend, rising track star Keisha Clark, played by Lovie Simone. Over the course of the next year, the two rekindle their relationship, fall in, out, and back in love,...

Introducing Forever's Stars, Michael Cooper Jr. and Lovie Simone
Image
In Forever, we see the work of one icon interpreted by another. Executive producer and writer Mara Brock Akil reimagines the coming-of-age novel by young adult literature pioneer Judy Blume, creating a limited series with a contemporary setting and exciting young leads. The eight dreamy episodes are sure to catch the attention and investment of those across generations.

“I can remember very clearly what I was doing at 12: reading this book I wasn’t supposed to be reading,” Brock Akil says about Forever . . . , a lifelong favorite of hers. “I talked about it on the bus, I talked about it in the hallways. I talked about it in the locker room.”

While the book was originally published in 1975, Brock Akil’s Forever takes place in 2018 Los Angeles, and centers on two Black teenagers, Keisha Clark and Justin Edwards. We meet Keisha, played by Lovie Simone, just...

Forever Ending Explained by Creator Mara Brock Akil: Do Keisha and Justin Stay Together?
Image
Is your first love Forever? Or something you remember forever?

That’s the question hanging over young couple Justin Edwards (Michael Cooper Jr.) and Keisha Clark (Lovie Simone) in the coming-of-age series from Mara Brock Akil. Inspired by Judy Blume’s seminal novel Forever …, the series follows two Black LA teens as they learn how to fall in love with the people they’re becoming while also falling for each other.

Originally childhood friends, Justin and Keisha meet again years later at a New Year’s Eve party that sparks a year of firsts: first real relationship, first time, first “I love you.” And perhaps even scarier: the first opportunity to really tell your parents what you want and need from life.

Brock Akil sees the couple’s romance as a reflection of “who catches you and holds you and sees you?” As Justin and Keisha realize they’ve met...

Teen angst is Forever! Netflix sets release date for reimagined Judy Blume series
Image
First loves hold a special place in many people's hearts, and that's exactly what Forever on Netflix is all about. The series is based on Judy Blume's book from 1975, but a reimagined version of the tale for modern times. And I'm sure it's going to melt our hearts. The streamer has set a release date, and we have it marked down on our calendars!

Get ready for the heartfelt looking drama this spring! Forever premieres Thursday, May 8, 2025 with all 6 episodes on Netflix. Though this version of the story is reimagined, the theme I think is universal for many and it's something teens and first-time couples have faced. And that's a first love and, well, first time having sex.

Blume is the author behind Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret, which was turned into a movie starring Rachel McAdams in 2023. That was a great film, and so I'm looking...
