Shonda Rhimes
Shonda Rhimes Killed Off a TV Character Because She Hated the Actor
Shonda Rhimes
Character deaths keep TV interesting. And it's a question everyone has had over the past decade as more and more shows feel it necessary to kill off audience favorites. Do some show runners have certain characters axed simply because they can't stand the actor? While a lot of producers and writers will stay mum on that subject, Shonda Rhimes doesn't mind telling the truth. In a recent interview with The Nightly Show, she confided in host Larry Wilmore that she has put a hit out on a certain character in the past. And it was because she couldn't stand the so-called 'thespian' bringing her creation to life. Though, don't look for her to name names, of which there are many.

The simple fact is, you do not cross Shonda Rhimes! The woman is behind some of the biggest hits on TV at this moment in time. She has created Grey's Anatomy,...

Kerry Washington in Scandal (2012)
Shonda Rhimes knows when and how 'Scandal' ends. She's just not telling.
Kerry Washington in Scandal (2012)
Of all the TV creators I've met over the years, two have consistently stood out as the most challenging to interview: David Chase and Shonda Rhimes. There's never been any hostility, but they stand apart from their showrunner brethren in their insistence on answering only the questions they want to answer, and only if it's asked in a way they find acceptable. Many showrunners have learned the PR trick of responding to a question they don't like by answering a different question altogether, but Rhimes and Chase will simply announce their disagreement with the premise of the question, or their lack of interest in answering it. (Chase, for instance, hates to explain the meaning of any one "Sopranos" scene or episode too much, while Rhimes all but shuts down whenever she's asked about either upcoming storylines or her legacy as an African-American female producer.) You have to stay on your...

Dr. Derek Shepherd Has Died
Barack Obama
World-renowned brain surgeon Derek Shepherd has died.

The talented doctor, whose car was broadsided after he helped to rescue victims of another accident, died Thursday shortly after doctors failed to properly diagnose the extent of his injuries.

A preeminent neurosurgeon, Shepherd's career hit a zenith just last year when President Barack Obama personally offered him the opportunity to lead a brain-mapping initiative for the National Institutes of Health.

"It's a beautiful day to save lives," Shepherd was known to say. "Let's have some fun."

The only son of a New York-based navy nurse and a convenience store owner, Shepherd and...

Grey's Anatomy Fans: Don't Rule Out This Baby Storyline Just Yet
Shonda Rhimes
Grey’s Anatomy‘s Callie Torres was angling to have a second baby (via adoption), until her already tenuous marriage to Arizona Robbins crumbled to pieces this fall.

And for so long, Owen Hunt lobbied Cristina Yang to start a family, only to be rebuffed every step of the way — right up until his ex-wife left Seattle for greener pastures in Zurich.

Might Callie (who’s bisexual) and Owen, each now quite eligible and regularly working side-by-side at Grey+Sloan, ultimately come together as a couple, and satisfy their common want?

Series creator Shonda Rhimes, when asked if she ever...

Eric Dane on The Last Ship's Anti-Mark Sloane Hero and His Grey's Ending
Eric Dane in The Last Ship (2014)
“It’s like Hunger Games on land, and it’s like Mad Max at sea.”

That’s how The Last Ship star Eric Dane sums up the state of the world in his new TNT series (premiering this Sunday at 9/8c), from executive producer Michael Bay (the Transformers franchise).

The mayhem starts after a virus decimates the global population, leaving Dane’s Captain Tom Chandler and his naval destroyer crew, who were out of harm’s way at sea, to find a cure.

The Last Ship on TNT: Grey’s Anatomy’s Eric Dane sets sail as a Navy commander on Michael Bay’s apocalyptic new series
If you were one of the zillion Grey’s Anatomy fans caught up in a collective swoon over Eric Dane’s “Dr. McSteamy”Mark Sloan, you may do a double take when you first see him as Navy Commanding Officer Tom Chandler in TNT’s pulse-pounding new action series The Last Ship. There’s no mistaking the heartthrob face and piercing blue eyes, but that signature seductive heat has been replaced with an austere cool that Dane attributes to the kind of real-life hero he’s representing. “This guy is not just the square-jawed Navy guy with the commander’s voice, barking orders; I wanted to bring … Continue reading →

Shonda Rhimes
From 'Grey's Anatomy' to 'Scandal,' we rank ShondaLand's 20 most romantic speeches
Shonda Rhimes
Shonda Rhimes is known for a lot of things. She’s the woman behind some of television’s most shocking twists. She’s an expert at season finales. And perhaps more than anything, she — and her writers — knows what it takes to make a speech go from good to great. Specifically, nobody knows how to say “I love you” like she does. This is the woman who invented McDreamy, after all.

And with last week’s Cristina-Burke reunion on Grey’s Anatomy, we were reminded of just how great those love confessions could be. So in honor of that moment...

Grey’s Anatomy’s mid-season finale opened with Christina (Sandra Oh) sitting at a press conference table, sandwiched between her ex-husband Chief Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) and her casual sex partner Shane (Gaius Charles). Everyone wants to know about the miraculous heart surgery that saved baby Nathan. When Cristina humbly and cautiously says everything is looking pretty good for now, Shane leans into the mic and shouts “Dr. Yang hit a home run!” Thus begins, “Get Up, Stand Up.”

Grey's Anatomy Recap

After the press conference Yang reprimands Shane for acting like he’s on speed and tells him he needs to calm down. Meanwhile, Owen takes to the hospital corridors to make sure that everyone invited to April’s (Sarah Drew) wedding shows up. Derek (Patrick Dempsey) and Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) are in. 'Grey's Anatomy' Fall Finale Recap: Did April Get Married?
"If you love somebody, you tell them, even if you're scared it will cause problems or burn your life to the ground. Say it loud and go from there." --- Mark Sloan

From the moment I heard Jackson Avery quote his late mentor, I knew April's wedding to Matthew was doomed. Well, yes, technically she could still marry him. And maybe she even should marry him. He's kind of perfect for her in many ways. After all, it was Matthew who told April that "I love you like this..." when her hair was in so many curlers that I'm surprised she was able to remain upright. It was also Matthew who wisely noted that he would see her many more times like that (translation: in the normal everyday moments that encompass a lifetime) than all dolled up for their wedding. Most importantly, Matthew is a kind, decent, honorable man who...

Eric Dane: I Would Have Done 'Grey's Anatomy' Until The Final Episode
James Pickens Jr., Ellen Pompeo, and Chandra Wilson in Grey's Anatomy (2005)
When Eric Dane was killed off at the beginning of Season 9 of "Grey's Anatomy," fans of Mark Sloan and his shirtless ways mourned his loss ... but it all started to make more sense when he was cast as Tom Chandler on TNT's "The Last Ship" a month later.

Although Dane was happy to join the Michael Bay-created series, he admitted that it was hard for him to leave "Grey's" behind.

“'Grey’s Anatomy' is a world ... it’s not about any one individual actor and the storylines were sort of ... you know, heading in different directions. So it was an opportunity for me to go and I was interested in something different,” he told EW. “I loved doing 'Grey’s Anatomy.' I would have done it until the final episode, but this was something I couldn’t pass up.”

When Shonda Rhimes wrote Dane off the series last September,...

A history of the TV detective in 10 coats
Feature Rob Smedley 2 Jul 2013 - 07:00

Rob traces the evolution of the TV detective via their choice of outerwear. Enter macs, leather jackets, and posh flappy numbers...

Luther's back tonight on BBC One, and ooh, doesn't he look cool as he stalks around London's streets like a man with a grudge against a bus? That's not just because he's played by Idris Elba, and your mind has subconsciously associated him with the cool job of piloting giant robots in Pacific Rim, oh no. It's because, like all the best detectives, he's wearing a cool coat.

The coat has become the shorthand for the detective, not only telling you a lot about the copper wearing it, but about the era they're wearing it in. So, in a not at all blatant rip-off of the BBC's A History of the World in 100 Objects let's chart the TV detective's beat across our...

‘Grey’s Anatomy’: Did [Spoiler] Really Die In Season Finale Tragedy?
Spoiler alert: Stop reading if you haven’t watched the ninth season finale of ‘Grey’s Anatomy!’

Promos for the May 16 season finale of Grey’s Anatomy promised an explosive ending, but they didn’t say anything about a fatal tragedy! So who was the unlucky victim? Drumroll please…

The Chief (James Pickens Jr.)!

Yes, it appears the mighty Richard Webber met his untimely end after coming in contact with water and electricity. (I could have told him that was a bad idea, for the record.) We weren’t given official confirmation of his death during this episode, but that doesn’t mean we didn’t lose him forever. Grey’s has a way of being tricky like that.

Silver lining? At least Richard will be reunited in heaven with Adele (Loretta Devine), who died back in January after Bailey’s wedding.

(See what Grey’s creator Shonda Rhimes tweeted about the potential death.

'Grey's Anatomy: Jackson Proposes New Hospital Name
Jackson Avery took charge of Seattle-Grace after the Harper Avery foundation took over the ailing hospital on "Grey's Anatomy." Right away, he had some big changes in mind.

"We are reopening the ER. We will be a level one trauma center again," he revealed. But that wasn't the biggest change he had in mind. He wanted to change the identity of the hospital, too.

"I move to rename the hospital," he said. He then flipped a notepad around to reveal to the other doctors his new proposed name: Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

The new name would honor their fallen friends, Lexie Grey and Mark Sloan. Of course, all of the doctors were in favor of the change. Celebuzz said the moment had them tearing up, while Buddy TV said, "Nicely done, Dr. Avery. Nicely done."

TV’s All-Time Top 10 Secondary Couples
By Carson Blackwelder

Television Contributor

***

In the world of TV, love dictates all.

All viewers have their favorite couples from past and present: From Lucy (Lucille Ball) and Ricky Ricardo (Desi Arnaz) to Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey), on-screen romances fill fan blogs and magazines.

But what about those secondary characters and their budding relationships that fly under the radar? Some of the best TV relationships have been those of sidekick characters or best friends, and it’s often their relationships that are more endearing than those of primary characters.

Here’s my list of the top 10 secondary TV couples and the adorable moments that make them so great:

10. Woody Boyd and Kelly Gaines (NBC’s Cheers)

Kicking off the list is the prime example of how opposites attract.

Woody Boyd (Woody Harrelson) and Kelly Gaines (Jackie Swanson) exemplified this by coming from vastly different backgrounds on NBC’s hit Cheers.

Addison & Jake Get Married In The 'Private Practice' Finale
Amy Brenneman, Brian Benben, Benjamin Bratt, Taye Diggs, Kate Walsh, Paul Adelstein, Caterina Scorsone, and KaDee Strickland in Private Practice (2007)
Addison and Jake will be walking down the aisle on the series finale of "Private Practice" (Tues., Jan. 22 at 10 p.m. Est on ABC).

When the "Grey's Anatomy" spinoff wraps up after six seasons in early 2013, Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh) will have her dream wedding with Jake Reilly (Benjamin Bratt), according to TV Guide. "I think it's really beautiful to send her off this way," Walsh told the website.

It's Addison's second marriage -- she was previously married to Derek (Patrick Dempsey) on "Grey's Anatomy," but they divorced after she had an affair with his best friend Mark Sloan (Eric Dane). "She's not a spring chicken, but walking down an aisle is still walking down an aisle," Walsh told TV Guide. "It feels like a very ceremonial moment."

Perhaps that's why Addison's former co-worker at Oceanside Wellness Dr. Naomi Bennett (Audra McDonald) is returning for the series of "Private Practice.

Grey's Anatomy Spoilers: Who Will Die in 2013?!
First, it was George O'Malley. Then, Lexie Grey. Most recently, Mark Sloan.

Who will fall next on Grey's Anatomy? Let the speculation begin now.

According to reports, in early 2013, someone else we know will die.

It's a longtime character, apparently, and one very much beloved.

That's all we have to go on right now, and clearly "longtime character" could mean many things. Who do you think is in danger this time? What circumstances do you think could bring about his/her demise?

Is there anyone in particular you would be crushed to see pass away in 2013, even though some of these arcs make for the most moving episodes? Conversely, whose death might make the most sense?

How Realistic Or Beneficial Is A TV Series Threatening To Kill Its Main Character?
By Rachel Bennett

Television Editor & Columnist

***

Last week on ABC’s Castle, a murderer framed Castle (Nathan Fillion) for his crime and almost killed him as the hour drew to a close. Castle luckily got away, as did the murderer, who will surely return one day.

It was a tense episode, but it left me feeling more tricked than treated: Did we truly expect Castle, the titular character, to bite the dust? No, because without him, there would be no show.

I recently wrote about shocking TV deaths, and there are many, but it tends to be supporting characters who get cut. Some are so fantastic or get enough attention that they feel like leads, but they’re technically classified as second-tier roles (think Jimmy Darmondy, played by Michael Pitt, of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire).

Other surprising deaths happen to characters that are a part of an ensemble, so they...

Patrick Dempsey Got 'Hand Slapped' For Tweeting 'Grey's' Spoiler
James Pickens Jr., Ellen Pompeo, and Chandra Wilson in Grey's Anatomy (2005)
"Grey's Anatomy" star Patrick Dempsey got in some hot water in August when he tweeted a massive "Grey's" spoiler: that Eric Dane's character Mark Sloan, aka McSteamy, would die in the plane crash that rocked the series' Season 8 finale.

Dempsey addressed the social media snafoo Thursday on "Hln's Morning Express." "I sometimes share the storylines a little too early. So I got my hand slapped for spoiling certain episodes. I gave an indication [McSteamy] wouldn't survive the plane crash."

For his part, Dane wasn't too upset that his co-star spoiled his big moment. On an earlier appearance on "Ellen," Dane said, "He took the picture, and he said, 'I'm gonna tweet this,' and I said, 'Well you should, that'll piss somebody off, so go for it.'"

Dempsey also told "Morning Express" that he expects "Grey's" has a season or two left in it, depending on how strong the ratings are this season.

Grey's Anatomy Scoop: Is There Hope for Cristina and Owen?
Sure, Mark Sloan and Lexie Grey died, and Arizona had her leg amputated. But what has been most painful for some Grey's Anatomy fans this season is the agonizing distance between Cristina (Sandra Oh) and Owen (Kevin McKidd).

British heritage site used to film 'Knight Rider' spoof porn flick - Realbollywood.com News
London, Oct 13: Volunteers and trustees of a beautiful heritage site in England are furious that the spot was rented out as a location for a porn film in a bid to raise funds.

Scenes from adult movie, 'Tight Rider,' were filmed in the warren of tunnels at Amherst Fort, Kent, which were built to help defend Britain's shores from Napoleon's rampaging army.

The X-rated film is an erotic spoof of 1980s classic TV series 'Knight Rider' starring porn stars Natalli D'Angelo and Mark Sloan, the Daily Mail reported.

It follows the explicit antics of "America's finest undercover agent" Michael Tight, who spends his time taking down criminals before having sex with lovers.

The new film has caused outrage among those.

What was your favorite quote or scene from this week’s Private Practice episode?

Caitlyn: Cooper running to find Charlotte in the hospital saying it was his job to protect her. I love how much he loves her and we really saw that in that scene.

Jarrod: Definitely the short scene between Amelia and Violet, in which Amelia said: "In the beginning everyone’s there, but people forget and lives go on, or people forget and go on even if it's not going on for you.

'Private Practice': Grieving Addison Tells Jake Everything
Amy Brenneman, Brian Benben, Benjamin Bratt, Taye Diggs, Kate Walsh, Paul Adelstein, Caterina Scorsone, and KaDee Strickland in Private Practice (2007)
As part of her grieving process after the loss of Mark Sloan, which happened on sister show "Grey's Anatomy," the latest episode of "Private Practice" saw Addison opening up completely with Jake. She unloaded virtually everything that had gone on between her and Mark and Derek, including that she'd become pregnant with Mark's baby and had an abortion.

It was certainly a lot to take in, and Addison had no idea how Jake might react to her spilling her guts like that. First, he calmly thanked her for telling him the truth. "I know that was hard," he told her. And then he apologized.

"You’re sorry?" Addison asked, confused.

"A man you loved died," Jake said. "I’m sorry for your loss."

All he cared about in the moment was her pain, and being there for her. TV Fanatic thought it was a little too easy, but acknowledged that...

Private Practice Review: Moving Forward
"Good Grief" reminded us that to move forward, we must allow for our old wounds to heal. Our favorite doctors faced challenges head on and we were treated to storylines that showed progression and growth.

So far, Private Practice Season 6 has been so unbelievably heartfelt and amazing. I am loving every bit of the writing and seeing how everything and everyone is changing.

While I was glad to see Addison dealing with Mark Sloan’s death, I thought it was very much like her to struggle with having to talk to Jake about her past. Jake’s reaction was a bit predictable, though, as he has really shown no evidence of being anything but a saint.

Don’t get me wrong. I’ve always been a huge fan of our girl Addie and I’m more than thrilled that she’s now got everything she’s always wanted. In fact,...

Grey's Anatomy Cast: New Season 9 Photos!
ABC has just released a new Grey's Anatomy Season 9 group photo and individual cast member shots as well. Coming more than two weeks into the season, the photos may have been withheld to avoid Grey's Anatomy spoilers.

Case in point: Eric Dane's Mark Sloan and Chyler Leigh's Lexie Grey do not appear.

The survivors are all there, though. Click to enlarge the new cast pictures below ...

The show is off this week, due to the V.P. debate, but will return with an all-new episode on October 18, "Love the One You're With." Which Grey's Anatomy cast member photo above is your favorite?...

Grey's Anatomy Round Table: "Remember the Time"
Welcome back to TV Fanatic's Grey's Anatomy Round Table!

Our Grey's Anatomy review broke down "Remember the Time" in great detail. Now, TV Fanatic staff members Courtney Morrison, Sean McKenna and Christina Tran have assembled for their weekly Q&A discussion.

Read their answers below and weigh in with yours!

----------------------------------------

1. What was your favorite scene from the episode?

Courtney: I Loved Cristina telling Owen about the time in the forest while he gave her a bath. Spectacular acting by Sandra Oh once again. Talking about the animals trying to eat Lexie and the bugs in Arizona's leg... heartbreaking stuff right there. Girlfriend already needs an Emmy for Grey's Anatomy Season 9 and it's only Episode 2.

Christina: Bailey: "All I keep thinking is that we are going to crash on a tropical island and get attacked by a polar bear." Sigh, I still miss Lost.

Sean: Cristina listening to a...

This week in television breakups
Jane Lynch, Lea Michele, Naya Rivera, Mark Salling, Matthew Morrison, Cory Monteith, Dianna Agron, Kevin McHale, Chris Colfer, Jenna Ushkowitz, Amber Riley, and Heather Elizabeth Morris in Glee (2009)
Ouch. This past week certainly hasn’t been easy for those of us who are a little too unhealthily involved in the lives of television characters. Glee, How I Met Your Mother and Grey’s Anatomy all had major relationship shake-ups, just a few weeks into the fall season. (Spoiler Alert! for this past week’s episodes ahead). On Monday, after an episode-long tease over who exactly would break up, Barney and Quinn called it quits over on How I Met Your Mother. It was hard to feel too sad about that one, though, not with an ending that had...

Five Thoughts on Arizona, From Shonda Rhimes
Warning: If you haven't seen this week's episode (or last week's), turn back now.

Grey's Anatomy treated us to another powerful episode this week, and show creator Shonda Rhimes is weighing in with her thoughts on Jessica Capshaw's shocking new storyline. Five of them, to be exact.

Having already eulogized Mark Sloan, Shonda is now defending her decision to have Arizona's leg amputated. Follow the link for our Grey's Anatomy review from last night, then read Rhimes' take below.

Her five thoughts on Arizona Robbins losing her leg are ...

'Grey's Anatomy' creator Shonda Rhimes writes Mark Sloan obituary: 'Hot naked guy in a towel' no more
Leave it to "Grey's Anatomy" creator Shonda Rhimes to include the words "hot naked guy in a towel" in an obituary. Okay, so the obit is for a fictional character -- but still, a man's McSteaminess is generally left out of his eulogy. Unless that man is played by Eric Dane.

In the current issue of Entertainment Weekly, Rhimes offers fans another chance to grieve Mark Sloan, one of our favorite "Grey's Anatomy" characters who met his maker in last week's season premiere.

We've learned that ABC demanded budget cuts on the long-running medical primetime soap, and Sloan fell victim to those cuts. Rhimes has admitted that axing Mark was one of the hardest decisions she's ever had to make as a writer. She tells us that she even considered not killing him off, and instead having him run off into the sunset with former love and "Private Practice" lead...

Mark Sloan Eulogy Penned By Shonda Rhimes
We bid farewell to the incomparable Dr. Mark Sloan in our Grey's Anatomy Round Table this week. Now show creator Shonda Rhimes has penned her own eulogy for the character, one of her all-time favorites.

In tonight’s new episode, “Remember the Time,” Eric Dane's character will grace our screens one final time as Shonda reveals to us how Sloan went from alive in the Season 8 finale to being on life support last week.

Mark's death (below) will go down as one of the most tear-filled Grey's moments in eight-plus seasons.

Rhimes full obituary for Sloan appears in EW's new issue, but this excerpt has been posted online:

'Grey's Anatomy' boss Shonda Rhimes writes Mark Sloan obituary: 'I like to believe that Mark is with Lexie somewhere' -- Exclusive
Last Thursday was a mournful television evening because it’s when Mark Sloan, a.k.a. McSteamy, was pulled off life support and died during the dramatic season 9 premiere of Grey’s Anatomy. In tonight’s new episode, “Remember the Time,” viewers will learn how Sloan went from alive in last May’s season finale to dead just a week ago.

As a eulogy to the late McSteamy — and an exclusive to EW — Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes penned an obituary for Sloan, who she calls “one of my all-time favorite characters to write.” (Rhimes is pictured here with Eric Dane,...

'Grey's Anatomy' preview: Mark Sloan lives in flashback monologue
We're so glad we got the chance to see Mark Sloan (Eric Dane) looking vibrant, healthy, and alive in flashback clips from last week's emotionally traumatizing "Grey's Anatomy" episode, because this week we'll flash back again -- to the darkest time in Mark's life.

This flashback will return us to the immediate aftermath of the plane crash, when Mark was conscious, but deeply morose, unstable, and definitely not his usual charming self. He's looking volatile, to say the least.

Obviously, he's feeling a lot of guilt about his last days with Lexie. "If you love someone, you tell them," he says to Avery (Jesse Williams). "Even if you're scared that it's not the right thing. Even if you're scared that it'll cause problems. Even if you're scared it will burn your life to the ground. You say it. You say it loud, and then you go from there."

The exchange...

'Private Practice': Addison Gets News That Mark Died On 'Grey's

While it wasn't a full-on crossover between the two series that share a universe, "Private Practice" did acknowledge the passing of Mark Sloan over on "Grey's Anatomy." It was during the 100th episode of "Practice," which also served as the unusual party Pete requested to celebrate his life, rather than mourn his death.

It was an emotional day already for everyone in attendance, despite Pete wanting everyone to be happy and keep it light. But when Addison got the phone call that they'd pulled Mark off of life support -- as seen in last week's episode of "Grey's Anatomy" -- she broke down.

TV Fanatic was a little disappointed that the two shows didn't use this opportunity for a more substantial crossover, while CarterMatt.com was pleased to get the connection to the parent series.

At the end of the episode, Violet was finally able to let go emotionally, knowing...

Private Practice Review: Saying Goodbye
Tonight marked the Private Practice 100th episode and, like most milestones, it was over far too quickly.

Although "Mourning Sickness" was mostly about saying goodbye to Pete, I found myself constantly wishing he was still around. Then again, maybe that was the point: to miss Pete just as much as his patients and colleagues did.

Pete’s last wishes were for a Balinese send-off that included singing, laughing and stories in celebration of his life. Thanks to a karaoke machine and even some pot, there was definitely some crooning and lots of laughing. And the stories? Well, patients couldn’t stop trying to make Violet feel better by telling her story after story about how amazing Pete was to them.

For the most part, Violet was able to keep her cool. With both Cooper’s and even Mini Cooper’s help, she was able to step away from the party to miss Pete silently alone.

Cheer up, Grey's fans: We've got something that'll help ease your grief—a brand spankin' new (and very spoilery) trailer! The clip may be a mere 80 seconds long, but it's packed with juicy developments, both from this Thursday's episode, "Remember the Time"─which flashes back to the docs' post-plane-crash rescue─and beyond. While it looks like Meredith (Ellen Pompeo), Derek (Patrick Dempsey) & Co. will continue to deal with some major emotional and physical fallout thanks to the tragedy, the ABC promo also gives fans reason to hope for brighter days ahead in season nine. (Some hot Mer-Der...

'Grey's Anatomy' creator defends character deaths
James Pickens Jr., Ellen Pompeo, and Chandra Wilson in Grey's Anatomy (2005)
Grey's Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes has defended her decision to kill off two major characters. On the ABC medical drama, a plane crash claimed the lives of both Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh) and Mark Sloan (Eric Dane). "The death of Lexie Grey haunts me," Rhimes wrote in a post on her official blog. "I adored that character and I couldn't imagine the show without her. "The plane was going to crash no matter what. I honestly wasn't sure, because of contract negotiations, who was going to die in that crash." Rhimes added that Lexie could have died "by doing something as simple as slipping and hitting her head" but that the death in the crash guaranteed "that her exit would have maximum impact". "She would have been dying over at Seattle Grace while other people were dying in the woods, which wasn't (more)...

Jessica Capshaw and Rhimes on Grey’s Anatomy Premiere Shockers: Death Legs
Grey’s Anatomy fans were shocked to learn of some pretty big changes in the cast when the series returned this past Thursday for its ninth season. Not only did we learn Mark Sloan did not survive being stranded in the wilderness – it’s been public knowledge somebody was going to die in between the Season 8 finale and this premiere – but the show came back revealing Arizona Robbins had lost her leg, drastically altering that character, not just in a physical sense, but emotionally. She, quite literally, lost a part of who she is and that pain revealed itself when she lashed out at Callie, who is apparently being blamed for Arizona’s new life as an amputee. Shonda Rhimes took the time to talk about Mark’s death while Jessica Capshaw spoke up about Arizona’s loss of limb.

Rhimes is not one to usually regret killing off a character,...

Grey's Anatomy Round Table: "Going Going Gone"
Welcome back to TV Fanatic's Grey's Anatomy Round Table!

Our Grey's Anatomy season premiere review broke down "Going Going Gone" in great detail. Now, TV Fanatic staff members Courtney Morrison, Sean McKenna and Christina Tran have assembled for their weekly Q&A discussion.

Read their answers below and weigh in with yours!

----------------------------------------

1. What was your favorite scene from the premiere?

Courtney: Tough one. On the emotional side, definitely Derek and Callie holding Mark's hands as he passed away. On a lighter note, I loved Cristina FaceTime-ing with Meredith and talking about what a train wreck of a surgery she was watching. It doesn't matter what city you put that girl in. She is always going to be funny.

Christina: I probably cried the hardest during the scene with Mark holding Sofia. I'm a sucker for emotionally-draining moments though so that scene was my favorite. It was all just so utterly heartbreaking.

Eric Dane McSteams Up the Streets After Grey's Anatomy Exit
James Pickens Jr., Ellen Pompeo, and Chandra Wilson in Grey's Anatomy (2005)
With or without Grey's Anatomy, Eric Dane will always be McSteamy to us. Just a day after the show's fans saw Dr. Mark Sloan meet his end, the hot actor greeted his wife Rebecca Gayheart shirtless as she returned home Friday.  Talk about a great way to start the weekend. Dane, who decided to leave the hit show after six years to pursue other projects, told TV Line in July, "I am extremely grateful to everyone at Grey's, ABC and Shondaland for the experience and memories I have had over the course of this run. It has been wonderful to work alongside and learn from a creative force such as Shonda Rhimes." We're sure going to miss him.

Grey's Anatomy: Shonda Rhimes Explains Killing Off Eric Dane's Character
James Pickens Jr., Ellen Pompeo, and Chandra Wilson in Grey's Anatomy (2005)
Thursday night was a difficult evening for many a "Grey's Anatomy" fan.

Dr. Mark Sloan, aka McSteamy (played by Eric Dane), said his final farewell to the halls of Seattle Grace on the show's Season 9 premiere, after he was taken off life support and subsequently passed away.

"Grey's" creator addressed the reasoning behind the loss of McSteamy in a blog post on Friday, writing, "For me, this ...
