'Sweet Magnolias' Needs To Be Done With These Characters
Image
Good versus evil is a tricky game in the fictional town of Serenity, South Carolina, where we follow best friends Maddie (JoAnna Garcia Swisher), Helen (Heather Headley), and Dana Sue (Brooke Elliott) in Netflix’s Sweet Magnolias. Throughout three seasons, we have seen there’s no logical path as to who can find redemption for their terrible acts. For instance, Maddie’s ex-husband Bill (Chris Klein) continues to be villainized for his mistakes — and even wrongs he had no clue about, like the existence of his firstborn child — with no path to follow to make things right. He’s been ousted from his children’s lives, including his newborn daughter’s, and the series feels this is justified. Meanwhile, the woman he cheated with and left his family for, Noreen (Jamie Lynn Spears), has received a full pardon and is even working for Maddie at the Corner Spa. Simply put,...

Sweet Magnolias Season 3 Episode 5 Review: On This Foundation
Brooke Elliott, JoAnna Garcia Swisher, and Heather Headley in Sweet Magnolias (2020)
Tensions were high at Annie's 16th birthday party.

Kathy crashed Annie's party and caused a scene on Sweet Magnolias Season 3 Episode 5, embarrassing herself and everyone else.

In addition, ugly truths flared at Margarita night, and the ladies fought like we had never seen them before.

Family dynamics are complicated, and Ronnie was caught in the middle between his wife and his estranged sister.

Kathy has been rude since Sweet Magnolias Season 3 began, though part of me wonders what started this cold war.

Did Kathy start this war with Dana Sue and Ronnie only because Ms. Frances helped fund Sullivans and left it to Dana Sue?

Getting along with the in-laws can be difficult, especially if the sibling felt like you stole their place.

Don't you dare drag my real sisters into your mess.

Sweet Magnolias' Allison Gabriel Talks Playing the Most Hated Woman in Serenity, Now More Than Ever
Image
“In the first season, fans loved to hate me,” Allison Gabriel tells TVLine of playing Sweet Magnolias‘ resident troublemaker Mary Vaughn Lewis. “In the second season, they just straight-up hated me.”

And can you blame them for taking issue with Gabriel’s character? Not only was she a constant thorn in the ladies’ collective side throughout the Netflix drama’s sophomore season, but (finale spoiler alert!) she’s also directly responsible for Cal losing his coaching job, triggering a spiral that would eventually land him in jail.

Sweet Magnolias: Allison Gabriel on Her Rivarlry With the Magnolias
Allison Gabriel
Allison Gabriel gives memorable performances in all of her roles. She has been portraying the Mayor's wife, Mary Vaughn Lewis, in Netflix's Sweet Magnolias premiered in 2020.

As the Mayor's wife, Mary Vaughn treats Serenity like her kingdom and has made long-time rivals of the Magnolias Maddie Townsend (JoAnna Garcia Swisher), Dana Sue Sullivan (Brooke Elliott), and Helen Decatur(Heather Headley).

We chatted with Allison about the long-time rivalry, Nellie and Kyle's romance, and her hopes for Mary Vaughn's character in a potential Season 3.

Hello, Allison. I'm a massive fan of Sweet Magnolias. Tell me what started the rivalry between Mary Vaughn and the Magnolias.

According to the books, it stems from my Sweet 16 party that I planned, and the Magnolias had planned a fundraiser on the same night. Everyone went to their fundraiser instead of my Sweet 16 party. That's what's in the books.

I don't know what the writers...

The Purge: Season One Ratings
While some cable networks strike gold with hit TV series, usually cable shows just don't draw the same sort of audience the big broadcast networks do. Although USA Network originally ordered the new TV show, The Purge, the thriller is also going to be rerun at times on its sister-station Syfy. Will running it on two NBC-Universal owned networks help it draw a larger audience, or at least minimize the cost to one network, or will viewers just be confused? Will The Purge be cancelled or renewed for season two? Stay tuned. *Status update below.
