Rosvita Dransfeld
Broke. Canada, 2008, 77’13 In association with TVO and Knowledge This latest documentary from award-winning filmmaker Rosie Dransfeld is set in a pawnshop. Its owner, David Woolfson, a bone-hard Jewish merchant from South Africa, is a banker of last resort for the down-and-out residents of EdmontonÂ’s grim and unforgiving inner city. HeÂ’s been running the store for nearly 16 years. Not that he needs to. ItÂ’s just that, if he was stuck at home, he would go mad.

Then, one day, Chris Hoard, an ex-convict, shows up and offers his help. For free. Shot in cinema-verite style, director Rosie Dransfeld brilliantly captures the unlikely friendship between the grouchy pawnbroker and his sweet-but-psychopathic assistant. Chris is learning a lot from the old cynic. But he has his own luggage to carry, and it is wearing him down.

At times hypnotic, the film portrays a powerful depiction of reality. DransfeldÂ’s style draws us deep into a world of bargaining, insults, poverty and desperation.

Emmy nominated producer Rosvita Dransfeld is an internationally renowned documentary filmmaker who crafts powerful explorations of the human condition. Her films include Who Cares, Antisocial Limited and Broke, winner of a Gemini award and the prestigious Donald Brittain Award for Best Social/Political Documentary. Dransfeld has become one of Canada's most celebrated contemporary filmmakers. POV Magazine has called her "a modern master of vérité." In her films, she reaches deep into the heart of worlds too often hidden from view, connecting the audience to the subjects on screen and provoke reflection from both. Her ability to capture the full humanity of her subjects and place them at the centre of her stories garnered recognition from America's largest documentary festival Hot Docs, which organized a retrospective of her work in its 2016 Focus On spotlight. Recently Dransfeld completed Memento Mori and Vital Bonds - two high profile documentaries for CBC The Nature of Things and CBC documentary channel, NOVA (PBS), SBS (Australia) and DR (Denmark). In 2019 ID completed two documentaries: Her Last Project for CBC POV, and Queens of Dogsville for Knowledge Network, TVO and Canal D.
