The Running Man's Glen Powell On Why He Prefers To Play An Ordinary Guy Over A Superhero
Image
Glen Powell may be closing the door on ever joining the ranks of superpowered heroes in the Marvel or DC universes.

In a recent interview with Empire Magazine, the Top Gun: Maverick and Twisters star revealed he's not particularly drawn to roles that involve capes, cosmic powers, or mutant abilities.

“I just don’t identify with people with superpowers for the most part,” Powell explained, discussing what led him to take on the role of Richards in the upcoming remake of The Running Man. “I like the ordinary guy against extraordinary odds. The entire world is hunting this man, trying to kill him. Can he survive? Can he save his family? That’s a great, simple story.”

Powell's comments seem to dash fan hopes of seeing him play characters like Aquaman or Nova, popular choices in recent fancast discussions.

However, his preference for grounded, human stories doesn’t completely shut...

The Running Man: Edgar Wright is Not trying to remake the Arnold Schwarzenegger version (and that’s a good thing)
Image
1987’s The Running Man is definitely a cult hit among Arnold Schwarzenegger’s movies, but it tends to get overlooked among some of the other classics he made. After all, it came out the same year as Predator, and let’s face facts—it’s no Predator. Perhaps that’s why Schwarzenegger himself once said it was the perfect movie of his to be remade. Everyone involved with the new version—especially Edgar Wright—would probably say it’s less a remake and more a fresh adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, which he wrote under the pseudonym Richard Bachman.

Based on the trailer alone, it does seem to be a somewhat more faithful adaptation, retaining an element that was ditched from the Schwarzenegger movie: Ben Richards is more impoverished, blacklisted from his profession, and trying to raise money to treat his ill daughter. The movie also keeps the fact...

'I Like The Ordinary Guy:' Glen Powell Explains Why Has No Interest in Playing A Superhero
Image
Though Glen Powell has been linked to many superhero roles, he is set to portray a more normal protagonist in the anticipated remake of The Running Man. His character, Ben Richards, is more of an everyman whom the actor can relate to more easily.

Speaking to Empire about the modernized adaptation of the popular Stephen King novel, Powell explained why Richards appealed to him. "I just don’t identify with people with superpowers for the most part," he said. "I like the ordinary guy against extraordinary odds. The entire world is hunting this man, trying to kill him. Can he survive? Can he save his family? That's a great, simple story."

Powell also said he could see himself in The Running Man remake from the moment the movie was pitched to him, leading him to turn down other opportunities, including Jurassic World: Rebirth. "Sometimes you've got to close your eyes...

Image

Slated to arrive in theaters on November 7, The Running Man is helmed by Baby Driver director Edgar Wright. Joining Powell in the cast are Lee Pace as Evan McCone, Josh Brolin as Dan Killian, Michael Cera as Elton, Katy O'Brian as Laughlin, Colman Domingo as Bobby Thompson, and many others.

Glen Powell Is An ‘Ordinary Guy Against Extraordinary Odds’ In The Running Man
Image
Sometimes, we want a blockbuster that gives us an extraordinary hero – a super man or fantastic family to rally behind, going up against impossible intergalactic odds. But on the flip-side, it’s hard not to root for stories about the everyman (or woman) – someone not destined for hero-dom, but thrust into circumstances where they’ll have to dig deep to survive. The Running Man is firmly in the latter mould, a fresh adaptation of the Stephen King novel from director Edgar Wright, with Glen Powell as Ben Richards – a man who enters a deadly televised game to win the money he desperately needs to save his family.

He couldn’t be more of the everyman hero. “I just don’t identify with people with superpowers for the most part,” Powell tells Empire, of why Richards appealed to him so much. “I like the ordinary guy against extraordinary odds. The entire world is hunting this man,...

Stephen King's The Running Man reboot speeding to a November 2025 release
Image
Shaun of the Dead director Edgar Wright has an intriguing new project. He’s finishing up another Stephen King adaptation for fans of cinematic versions of the horror icon’s prose.

The massive success of the first It remake increased interest in rebooting King's past works, including the ones that didn’t do so well. So far, no one appears interested in developing a new version of Maximum Overdrive, but this November, we'll see the second big-screen version of 1987's The Running Man.

The Running Man originally debuted as a novella King wrote under his “Richard Bachman” pen name. The dark dystopian work about a game show where contestants face a life-or-death chase with hunters on their heels had much potential. That’s not how things played out in theaters. While King’s books continued to sell high volumes, films like Firestarter and Creepshow 2, didn’t set critics or fans on fire.

The Running Man star Colman Domingo reveals Jerry Springer inspired his game show host
Colman Domingo’s villainous game show host in ‘The Running Man’ was inspired by Jerry Springer. The 55-year-old actor portrays ‘The Running Man’ presenter Bobby Thompson in director Edgar Wright’s upcoming thriller movie, and Domingo has revealed he based the character on the controversial late talk show host.Speaking with Fandango, he said: "Edgar and I were talking about all the differences of game show hosts and TV hosts, period, of different shows … I remember the documentary [‘Jerry Springer: Fights, Camera, Action’] just landed and I thought, ‘This is interesting.’ "Someone who was just a guy with a role, and then he started to take off and started to feed into it as well and sort of bring out the worst in people in many ways. But also felt like he was not complicit at the same time."The ‘Sing Sing’ actor didn’t just take inspiration from Springer,...

Colman Domingo Explains How Jerry Springer Inspired His ‘Running Man’ Character
Image
As those in attendance at last week’s CinemaCon saw, there’s a lot to look forward to when it comes to Edgar Wright’s remake of The Running Man. Starring Glen Powell in the role first held by Arnold Schwarzenegger back in Paul Michael Glaser’s 1987 adaptation of the Stephen King novel, the movie has been building plenty of anticipation. Set in a dystopian future, the story follows a man named Ben Richards (Powell), who agrees to participate in a reality competition survival show that sees him pursued by hunters. Keeping the folks back at home entertained will be Colman Domingo’s Bobby Thompson, who hosts the family-favorite TV show. From the first teaser we saw last week, Domingo’s character is flashy, over-the-top, and downright entertaining — precisely the personality you’d tune into see week in and week out.

During a conversation with The Playlist, Domingo opened up...

Top Gun: Maverick "Royal Premiere"
Glen Powell I Making The Running Man was ‘the hardest thing I’ve done in my life’
Top Gun: Maverick "Royal Premiere"
Glen Powell has Arnold Schwarzenegger’s blessing for Edgar Wright’s The Running Man film – but it was tough to make.

This November will see the release of Edgar Wright’s The Running Man. It’s a take on Stephen King’s novel of the same name that imagines a future dystopian US where violent game shows are the ‘opiate of the masses’. America’s particular favourite being The Running Man, a nightly show where hunters chase contestants across the country, killing them for the satisfaction of the viewers at home.

Stephen King’s book has already been adapted for the screen once before, with the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger action vehicle keeping lots of the basic plot elements but jettisoning King’s bleak tone in favour of something more bombastic. After all, ‘it was acceptable in the 80s’, as the song goes.

Baby Driver director Edgar Wright has already confirmed (to...

Arnold Schwarzenegger gave his blessing to The Running Man remake
Image
Remaking a fan favorite is always a risky move. And while the power of Edgar Wright, Glen Powell and Josh Brolin is enough to restore confidence in the upcoming remake of The Running Man, it might take even more to get some on board. Glen Powell – who will be taking over the role of Richards, who has been forced to participate in the country’s most dangerous game show – recently revealed that Arnold Schwarzenegger gave the go-ahead for The Running Man remake. Powell said that he used his friendship with Arnold’s son Patrick – and not his having already worked with him on The Expendables 3 – to set up a FaceTime meeting. “Arnold gave us his full blessing and we get to give Arnold a very specific...

Glen Powell Got 'Running Man' Advice from Tom Cruise
Image
One of Hollywood's most prominent actors today, Glen Powell, is set to star in Edgar Wright's upcoming Stephen King adaptation, The Running Man. While the movie requires an atypical amount of physical effort, Powell seems to be an actor who's physically fit for the role. Nevertheless, it looks like one of his mentors had a different opinion. Tom Cruise, his co-star in Top Gun: Maverick, had a very important piece of advice that didn't have to do with fitness routines. It had to do with determining how cool he could look while running.

Powell, as well as Wright and the rest of the cast, appeared at CinemaCon to present the film's first look and trailer. Per the report by Variety, Powell grabbed the mic and told the anecdote of calling his Top Gun co-star to ask for some advice. First, he said Cruise is "a guy that doesn't hide...

Glen Powell Reveals Arnold Schwarzenegger's Reaction to 'The Running Man'

Released in 1987, Arnold Schwarzenegger's The Running Manwas largely panned by critics at the time, but over the years it's become a cult-favorite thanks to its many one-liners and gratuitous violence. 'What I Get for Asking Tom Cruise for Advice': How Glen Powell Went 'Through Fire' Filming The Running Man

Many actors who worked with Tom Cruise revealed they asked him for advice. As the Mission: Impossible star is always willing to help fellow actors, his love for stunts might drive other actors to do the same.

During Paramount's CinemaCon presentation, which included films on its upcoming slate, Glen Powell revealed he asked Tom Cruise for advice on using a stunt double, per Deadline.

Edgar Wright at an event for Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010)
The Running Man first trailer was shown to the CinemaCon audience
Edgar Wright at an event for Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010)
Four years have gone by since it was announced that Edgar Wright was coming on board to direct a new take on the novel The Running Man, which was written by Stephen King under his Richard Bachman pen name. The Running Man was, of course, previously turned into a film back in 1987 that starred Arnold Schwarzenegger and had little to do with the source material. Last year, Wright’s take on the material began filming with Glen Powell of Top Gun: Maverick, Hit Man, and Twisters in the lead role. Production wrapped last month – and now, the audience at the CinemaCon event in Las Vegas has already gotten to see the first trailer for the film!

King’s novel has the following description: It was the ultimate death game in a nightmare future America. The year is 2025 and reality TV has grown to the point where people are willing to...

Paramount Pictures is readying to put Edgar Wright’s The Running Man in the starting block with seven months to go before a Nov. 7 debut in theaters. The cast looked prepped and game to set a strong theatrical pace by appearing on Caesars Palace’s Colosseum stage during the studio’s CinemaCon presentation on Thursday.

“I have never worked harder on a movie in my life,” said star Glen Powell, known as one of the busier actor-producers in Hollywood of the film, which just wrapped a week ago.

Wright and Powell were joined by Josh Brolin and Colman Domingo for a lively segment during which they introduced never-before-seen footage from the film, an adaptation of Stephen King’s 1982 novel. Published under King’s pseudonym Richard Bachman, The Running Man is set in an America in 2025 under a totalitarian regime that uses violent game shows to placate the disenfranchised masses.

Wright and Powell both took to social media to share an image of them on set together, and each used the same caption. Powell’s caption read: “That’s a picture wrap on The Running Man. All my love and appreciation goes out to our incredible cast and crew...
