Robert Eggers' Nosferatu Gets Glowing Review From 1 of Hollywood's Most Iconic Directors
Image
Robert Eggers' latest horror film, Nosferatu, has received tons of praise from critics and audiences, but it just received a major stamp of approval from legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese, who revealed he's a massive fan of the film and the man behind the vampire flick.

Per GamesRadar+, Scorsese sat down with TCM host Dave Karger to discuss his legendary career in cinema, when the topic of Nosferatu was brought up. When asked whether he had seen the film, Scorsese confirmed that he had and offered tons of praise for the film and Eggers himself. "It’s amazing," Scorsese said. "Anything this guy does, amazing. And that's one [film] you don’t do much after seeing. You’re still in the world. You’re in Transylvania, and it’s really, [laughs] whoa. Man, he’s something."

Martin Scorsese Loves Robert Eggers: ‘Anything This Guy Does Is Amazing’
Image
Martin Scorsese is in awe of Robert Eggers.

During a recent Q&a with TCM’s Dave Karger (via World of Reel), Scorsese praised Eggers’ auteurism on his recent film “Nosferatu.”

“It’s amazing,” Scorsese said of the film. “Anything this guy does is amazing. That’s one film you don’t do much after seeing. You’re still in the world. You’re in Transylvania and it’s really … Man, he’s something.”

While Scorsese isn’t quite known for horror, Eggers has become a modern master of the genre. Eggers, who previously helmed “The Witch,” “The Northman,” and “The Lighthouse,” announced his fifth film “Werwulf” in January 2025.

“Werwulf” will be a werewolf horror movie set in 13th century England, and will see Eggers re-team with Focus Features. Eggers cowrote the script with his “The Northman” scribe Sjón. Like “Nosferatu,” “Werwulf” will be getting a holiday release; the film...

The Dark Pictures Could Jump The Shark With Directive 8020
Image
The next title in Supermassive Games’ horror series The Dark Pictures Anthology will change things up from its predecessors, as a science fiction game set in outer space, but Directive 8020 threatens to completely jump the shark for the franchise. The four core games that make up Season One of The Dark Pictures all follow a similar theme, as crimes of the past lead to lethal consequences in the modern era. Switching to a futuristic setting absolutely clashes with the established vibe and tone. The framing device of The Curator and his library may feel anachronistic when juxtaposed with sci-fi.

The first season of the franchise ended on a high note, as The Devil In Me delivered scares, solid character development, and genre-appropriate storytelling. An anthology video game series like The Dark Pictures was a novel idea, and Supermassive has executed the project masterfully up until now. Actor Pip Torrens’s...

Whitechapel Proves the True Crime Obsession Dates Back to Jack the Ripper
Image
Lasting four seasons and 18 episodes, Whitechapel, a BBC police procedural series, depicted cases based on some of the most infamous crimes to take place in the United Kingdom. The series operated on a premise that reflected the cult following that notable criminals achieve, with detectives pursuing copycat assailants who were obsessed with recreating past transgressions. The first season, in particular, while only three episodes long, tackled the case that, more than any other, is responsible for the publics fascination with true crime, Jack the Ripper.

The series itself, named for the neighborhood in Londons East End where the ripper murders took place, not only examines a copycat interested in recreating the unsolved killing spree of the Victorian era but also touches on the class division in London and sensationalism that launched the ripper phenomenon into popular culture. Had it not been for the emergence of both the tabloid press and...

One of Cinema's Scariest Villains Has a Secret Connection to This 53-Year-Old British Horror Film
Image
Few horror villains have had the impact of John Jigsaw Kramer. Portrayed by Tobin Bell, Kramers onscreen presence commands nothing less than absolute respect. He appears as a main character in only four of Saws ten movies, yet he constantly drives each films plot. Like every other cinema icon, Jigsaw is an amalgamation of many inspirations. His elaborate schemes recall the mythos that surround H. H. Holmes. When clad in his robes and mask, his terrifying presence harkens back to Texas Chainsaw Massacres Leatherface. Yet, by his creators own admission, he is designed to counter contemporary horrors marquee villains. His tragic personal life and warped sense of justice recall sympathetic anti-heroes like Candymans Daniel Robitaille.

However, one of Kramers most surprising inspirations comes from a film thats more comedy than horror. In 1971, Robert Fuest directed a campy delight by the name of The Abominable Doctor Phibes. The decidedly comedic take...

10 Hilarious Far Side Comics Starring the Grim Reaper (& Other Ghouls)
Image
In a way, death was everpresent The Far Side, making it surprising that Gary Larson's depictions of the Grim Reaper were often silly, offering a twist on the comic's usual look at mortality through dark humor and absurd scenarios. Gary Larson used the visual iconography of Death in his comics to provide a unique and comical perspective on life's struggles. The Grim Reaper and other ghoul characters featured in in The Far Side showcased Larson's unconventional and playful take life's greatest, most intimidating mystery: mortality itself.

Death was a frequent guest star on The Far Side sometimes literally, as these panels featuring the Grim Reaper and other ghoulish figures show. Artist Gary Larson's penchant for dark humor meant that many of his characters met tragic, and at times twisted fates; yet the cartoons in which the embodiment of mortality itself appeared were, in typical Far Side fashion, among the silliest,...

I'm Relieved Scorsese & DiCaprio's Serial Killer Project Is Still Happening After 14 Years In Development Hell
Image
Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio's project "The Devil in the White City" survived 14 years of development hell, and a new development confirmed it's still happening. "The Devil in the White City" is a thrilling collaboration between Scorsese & DiCaprio that will adapt a dark and gritty true story. Scorsese and DiCaprio's involvement in "The Devil in the White City" is a great sign for the show's quality, and it makes me very excited.

Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio's upcoming serial killer project The Devil in the White City has survived 14 years of development hell, and I'm so glad it did. Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio have one of the best working relationships in Hollywood. They've collaborated on films like The Departed, Killers of the Flower Moon, Shutter Island, and more. Those films were some of the best movies DiCaprio and Scorsese made together, and they proved that their creative visions blended together perfectly.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese's Devil in the White City Still in Development
Image
A project that has long been in development with Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese still has some life in it. DiCaprio optioned the film rights to the book, The Devil in the White City, back in 2010, and it was in various forms of development even before the actor got his hands on it. Scorsese has been attached to direct for some time, but the duo went on to focus on other projects, with the most recent being Killers of the Flower Moon. Despite the film not coming to fruition just yet, it appears that the project is still very much alive.

During a chat with Deadline, producer Stacey Sher provided an update on the project and it sounds pretty promising. Sher, who has been involved in the development process since the start, confirmed, "I'm still involved. I never give up." It should be noted that it's not in the immediate pipeline,...

Martin Scorsese & Leonardo DiCaprio's Movie Adaptation Gets New Update After 14 Years In Development Hell
Image
Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio's film project based on The Devil in the White City has faced delays for 14 years. According to producer Stacey Sher, the film-turned-limited series adaptation is still moving forward with the original team, despite setbacks such as Hulu dropping the series. Even though the project has been in development for almost a decade and a half, it seems there's still a chance it actually sees the light of day.

Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio's movie adaptation The Devil in the White City has gotten an update following 14 years of development hell, indicating whether the project is ever going to be made. Based on the 2003 non-fiction book by Erik Larson, the story follows the real-life history of World's Fair architect Daniel Burnham and America's first serial killer, H.H. Holmes. DiCaprio purchased the film rights in 2010, with the film stuck in development ever since. While The Devil in the White City...

Stacey Sher at an event for Freedom Writers (2007)
The Devil In The White City | Scorsese and DiCaprio adaptation still in the works
Stacey Sher at an event for Freedom Writers (2007)
Producer Stacey Sher says The Devil In The White City, the Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio project thought to be in development hell, is still happening.

It’s well over a decade since Leonardo DiCaprio picked up the film rights for author Erik Larsson’s non-fiction book, The Devil In The White City, but an adaptation of it is still alive and well. That’s according to producer Stacey Sher, who says that both DiCaprio and filmmaker Martin Scorsese are still involved in the project in some capacity.

First published in 2003, The Devil In The White City is part history, part crime thriller, taking in the creation of the Chicago World’s Fair and the exploits of murderer Hh Holmes, who killed a number of people in Chicago as the expo took place in the 1890s. Its sprawling period detail would be expensive to realise in a film or TV production,...

‘Devil In The White City’ Still Happening With Martin Scorsese & Leonardo DiCaprio, Says Producer Stacey Sher – Everything You Need To Know
Image
Producer Stacey Sher gave Deadline the latest update along what has been the very winding road to adapting Erik Larson’s bestselling non-fiction classic, The Devil in the White City, for the screen.

The project has been in various stages of development since before Deadline revealed that Leonardo DiCaprio had bought the film rights to the book in 2010. He subsequently set it up as a feature at Paramount with Scorsese to direct and himself to star. In 2019, Hulu announced that it was developing the project as a big-budget series with DiCaprio and Scorsese exec producing. Last year, Hulu decided not to proceed with the project. ABC Signature, which had the project in Association with Paramount Television Studios, indicated at the time a continuing comittment to the project and hope of finding it a new home. That was in March 2023.

Now, when asked about the long-aborning Devil Sher, who has been with it since the beginning,...

Who Was Jack The Ripper? Unsolved Mysteries' 5 Suspects Explained
Image
The following article contains mentions of suicide.

John Pizer, the Leather Apron, was wrongly suspected by London police and quickly ruled out as Jack the Ripper. Montague John Druitt was a serious suspect who died by suicide but the police lacked concrete evidence linking him to the murders. Francis Tumblety, an American fraud, was arrested in London for the murders but escaped police custody on bail.

Unsolved Mysteries dives deep into the Jack the Ripper case (perhaps one of the biggest unsolved cases in history) in volume 4, including exploring five suspects who have been named over the years. The Netflix true crime documentary series was created by John Cosgrove and Terry Dunn Meurer and originally premiered in January 1987 on ABC. Since then, Unsolved Mysteries has jumped around networks and streaming services from ABC to CBS to Lifetime to Spike and, most recently, to Netflix. Screen Rant presents the latest episode of The Big Score, which dives into the music of Shgun. Shgun's composers, Leopold Ross, Atticus Ross, and Nick Chuba, masterfully blend traditional Japanese instruments and modern techniques for a unique score in FX's mini-series. Collaborating with Taro Ishida, the composers skillfully adapt traditional Japanese music elements while creating immersive soundscapes.

The latest episode of Hollywood Records The Big Score series explores the music of Shgun, and Screen Rant has a first look. Shgun is a record-breaking adaptation of James Clavells 1975 novel of the same name, and tells the story of John Blackthorne, an English man who washes up on the shores of Japan, only to find himself a pawn in the far-reaching schemes of the powerful lord Yoshii Toranaga. Inside No. 9 Series 9 Episode 4 Review: Ctrl/Alt/Esc
Image
Warning: This Inside No. 9 review contains spoilers.

He woke up, right? He opened his eyes, the light went from red to green and the door noise sounded, which means that he woke up. Didn’t he? Jason opened his eyes, the exit light went from red to green and the door noise sounded, which means that he definitely, definitely woke up. For absolute clarity, what we just watched in the final moments of that tense episode was Jason awaken from his coma to reunite with his family, and what we absolutely didn’t watch was his brain making desperate attempts to cling on to life while his devastated loved ones unwittingly killed him. Right?

Good. Phew. Imagine! The alternative would have been so sad. Who’d write something as dark as that?!

Inside No. 9’s Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton would, of course, and would likely crack a rib laughing about it too.

What Happened to Stone Cold Steve Austin?
Image
In the summer of 1996, the World Wrestling Federation held its annual King of the Ring tournament. After weeks of matches, the semis and finals were set for June 23rd, 1996, with Stone Cold Steve Austin facing Jake “The Snake” Roberts for the crown later in the night. Roberts, then known for working from a Christian angle, would cut a promo before the match doing just that. Just before Austin took the ring and pinned Roberts, he was tipped about the promo’s contents.

After the five-minute match, Austin stood next to the same man who tipped him off, Michael Hayes. And it was there that a legend and a catchphrase were born, and an entire industry was born again. With a mouth full of blood, Stone Cold Steve Austin told his defeated opponent: “You sit there and you thump your Bible, and you say your prayers, and it didn’t get you anywhere!
