Paul Thomas Anderson's much-anticipated One Battle After Another dropped a new trailer, which highlights the film's heavier themes. Inspired by the controversial Thomas Pynchon novel, the adaptation is a career first for Anderson, who shot the movie for large-format screens.

One Battle After Another adopts a more serious tone in the latest trailer, which teases the plot at breakneck speed. It's a glimpse of the main character's backstories, fleshed out by a star-studded cast; Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, and Benicio del Toro top the list. Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor, and Chase Infiniti are also compelling in brief appearances. Inspired by author Thomas Pynchon's Vineland, director Paul Thomas Anderson takes after the novel's tone and premise, but the film is set in the present day, referencing recent events.

"When their evil enemy resurfaces after 16 years, a group of ex-revolutionaries reunites to rescue one of their own's daughter," the official logline reads.

It’s even set to a jaunty Beyoncé tune most closely associated with the presidential campaign for Kamala Harris.

On Thursday, Warner Bros. released the first trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson’s new movie with Leonardo DiCaprio, which arrives in theaters on Sept. 26 — a release date that all but assures Anderson’s latest of launching at one of the significant fall festivals in Venice, Telluride, or Toronto.

Still, regardless of its eventual landing spot, One Battle After Another was always considered one of the year’s top potential Oscar films, sight unseen. Anderson’s movies have racked up several nominations over the last two decades, as have DiCaprio’s many acclaimed features. It’s always possible that One Battle After Another is the exception, not the rule — especially because Anderson’s last dalliance with the work of Thomas Pynchon, Inherent Vice (more on that below), didn’t connect with the Academy significantly.

Anderson’s “One Battle After Another,” which is inspired by Thomas Pynchon’s 1997 novel “Vineland,” stars DiCaprio as a civil rights activist who joins an anti-government group to combat an “alt-right” white supremacist organization. The gunfire continues in the background as another scene signals the arrival of their newborn child in a crib, with a voice-over asking, “What are you gonna do about this baby?”

The teaser in another key scene features the child, now a young woman played by Chase Infiniti, aggressively firing off her own automatic rifle in what has become a family tradition. “Just when you think you got a handle on things,” a narrator intones as the teaser finally reveals the title for Anderson...
