'Watchmen: Chapter 2' Ending, Explained: Is This a New Beginning?
Image
The original Watchmen graphic novel was first published monthly through 1986 and 1987, before being compiled into a single volume in 1987. The comic was written by famed author Alan Moore, illustrated by artist Dave Gibbons and published by DC Comics. In the years since, Watchmen has had three major adaptations – a theatrical live action film directed by Zack Snyder in 2009, an HBO miniseries set in the universe of the comic in 2019, and most recently, an animated two-part film released this year.

This newest adaptation was directed by Brandon Vietti and produced by Warner Brothers. It’s not the first adaptation and is almost certainly not going to be the last, but it is the first that feels like the graphic novel given motion and is the most accurate adaptation of the original work to date.

Watchmen: Chapter 1 (2024) Review & Ending Explained
Billy Crudup, Malin Akerman, Matthew Goode, Jackie Earle Haley, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Patrick Wilson in Watchmen (2009)
The 55th installment of the DC Universe Original Animated Films and the first of a two-parter, “Watchmen: Chapter 1,” is the direct adaptation of the first six issues of the seminal graphic novel Watchmen, written by Alan Moore, drawn by Dave Gibbons, and colored by John Higgins. The animated film is directed by Brandon Vietti (Batman: Under the Red Hood) and adapted by J. Michael Straczynski (showrunner of Babylon 5).

Watchmen: Chapter 1 (2024) Plot Summary and Movie Synopsis:

Setting

Considering that this is a faithful adaptation of the graphic novel, the setting of the movie remains the same as well. An alternate reality was the United States of America in the 1980s, where the presence of costumed vigilantes or superheroes would begin to produce a point of divergence in 1938. The most significant divergence to have occurred in the Vietnam War, which resulted in a victory for the American forces in 1971 due to the presence of Doctor Manhattan.

Watchmen Chapter II Review: Animated Masterpiece Unveiled
Image
Nearly four decades after its stunning premiere, Watchmen continues to evolve through creative adaptations. Watchmen Chapter II’s most recent release is a groundbreaking animated experience that promises the most authentic portrayal of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ renowned graphic novel.

This two-part animated series, directed by Brandon Vietti and written by J. Michael Straczynski, provides a fresh perspective while keeping the source material’s profound philosophical substance. Set in an alternate 1985, where costumed heroes have rewritten history, the film strikes a delicate balance between narrative depth and visual storytelling.

Watchmen Chapter II is a comprehensive animated adaptation set in a universe where Richard Nixon stays president and nuclear conflict is a constant concern. The film differentiates itself by remaining remarkably faithful to the original graphic novel and employing a distinct animation style that clearly references Dave Gibbons’ artwork.

This research will examine the animated adaptation’s narrative strategy, visual execution,...

'We're Not Canceled': Young Justice Season 5 Gets Optimistic Update From Superboy Actor
Image
There is still hope yet for Young Justice Season 5. Nolan North, who voices Superboy in the acclaimed DC animated series, recently reminded fans that the show has neither been canceled nor renewed.

Speaking with Screen Rant to promote Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths, North explained that Young Justice is currently on hiatus and awaiting a renewal order or cancelation from Max. "Well, we have Warner Brothers people on the Zoom right now, I'm telling you guys, we can do this. We can make another season. I don't know, I'm not privy to that. I know it's a hit. I know fans want it desperately. I don't know, I wish I did," he said. "We were so fortunate to get [to do the first two] seasons and three and four. As you know, if you saw season four, Superboy had a big storyline in that and it was so much fun. I love Greg Weisman and Brandon Vietti,...

Watchmen: Chapter II releases trailer, sets release date
Alan Moore
While we all know author Alan Moore will never like adaptations of his beloved works, if he acknowledges their existence at all, I think if he were to give them a go, he’d be most impressed by the new animated Watchmen films, based on his classic superhero graphic novel.

Brandon Vietti's Watchmen: Chapter I was released in August to great critical acclaim. The film was a perfect adaptation of the first half of the much-loved graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. Even more faithful, perhaps, than Zack Snyder’s popular live-action adaptation in 2009. In addition, the animation (which is very reminiscent of Telltale games) perfectly suits the story; the team were able to absolutely nail the signature aesthetic of the graphic novel. It really is a feast for the eyes!

But of course, Chapter I only covered the first half of the source material. By the end of the film,...

Watchmen Chapter 2 Debuts Trailer and Earlier Than Expected November Release Date
Image
The second installment of the animated adaptation of Alan Moore's famous comic Watchmen is on the horizon. Fans expected to see the second half of the 1986 Cold War comic sometime in 2025, but it looks like Christmas has come early this year for Watchmen fans. Warner Bros. and Studio Mir have revealed the sooner-than-expected release date for Watchmen Chapter 2 and a trailer. The first animated part of the twelve-chapter comic adaptation Watchmen Chapter 1 was released in August of this year.

Watchmen Chapter 2 will be released on digital platforms on November 26. The new trailer posted on YouTube by IGN clears up some lingering questions fans have after enjoying the first half of the animated film series directed by animator Brandon Vietti. With original comic artist Dave Gibbons as co-writer, the first chapter closely followed the beginning of the comic series, adapting the comic nearly panel by panel and line by line.

Superboy voice actor Nolan North opens up on the possibility of Young Justice season 5, following the DC show's previous season. After the end of Young Justice: Phantoms (a.k.a. season 4), the world was left without a proper answer to whether or not this was the end of the DC animated series. With all the changes that have been happening at Warner Bros. Discovery concerning the DC properties, as they are getting ready for James Gunn's DC Universe, many have assumed Young Justice was done.

In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, while promoting Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths - Part One, Nolan, who voices multiple characters in the movie, was asked for an update about Young Justice season 5. Titus Welliver Discusses Similarities Between Watchmen's Rorschach and His Bosch Character
Image
Before lending his voice to Rorschach in Watchmen Chapter 1, Titus Welliver played Los Angeles Police Department Detective Harry Bosch in the Prime Video procedural drama Bosch. According to the actor, there are some similarities between the animated detective and the live-action cop.

"I think the similarity is that Rorschach is relentless in the same way that Harry Bosch is," Welliver told ComicBook. "I mean, there's a kind of obsessive nature to the character. Even his attire is a throwback to the gumshoes - the fedora and the raincoat and all that. And Harry Bosch obviously is not as dark as Rorschach, but there's a weird similarity coming from a really bad and traumatic childhood. That's what made it kind of fun, was doing that. I've always said I don't know why somebody doesn't do an animated series of Bosch. It would be really cool if they could pull that off.

Watchmen: Chapter 1 Review - Too-Faithful Storytelling Makes For An Only Adequate DC Adaptation
Image
Alan Moore's graphic novel gets another shot at life with Watchmen: Chapter 1, a faithful, yet flawed, adaptation. The 3D cel-shaded animation offers a unique approach to the material, yet feels cheap in parts. The cast are well-chosen for their roles, particularly Titus Welliver as Rorschach, and the adherence to the source material's story is welcome, but ultimately feels too familiar and lacking surprise.

The world of Alan Moore's iconic graphic novel is coming back to the screen with Watchmen: Chapter 1, the third major adaptation of the source material. Zack Snyder first adapted the superhero satire with the 2009 movie of the same name, which saw a generally polarized response from critics but, much like other Snyder movies, has amassed a cult following since. Lost alum Damon Lindelof came back a decade later with the HBO Watchmen miniseries, which served as a sequel to the graphic novel and explored the same universe 34 years later,...

Watchmen Chapter 1 Director Brandon Vietti Discusses Zack Snyder
Image
Adapting Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' Watchmen is no easy task. Apart from satirizing the different ideas of power that superheroes embody, it also challenges the limitations of comic book storytelling. Between Moore's use of parallelism and Gibbons' unique panel layouts, Watchmen explores the different perspectives of its characters in ways never achieved in comics before or since. Watchmen's unique method of storytelling inspired director Zack Snyder to adapt the story into live-action using his own creative lens in 2009.

In 2024, director Brandon Vietti invites a new generation of fans to fall in love with Watchmen through the medium of animation. Not only does Watchmen Chapter 1 create an immersive experience that differs from both the original comic and Snyder's movie, but it reinterprets the characters in new and exciting ways through its voice cast. Sitting down with Cbr, Vietti talks about his love for the Watchmen comic, his respect for Snyder's film,...

Watchmen Chapter I Clip Recreates Two Big Scenes From Alan Moore And Dave Gibbons' Iconic Graphic Novel
Image
Plenty of big news came out of this weekend's San Diego Comic-Con, including the first clip for Watchmen Chapter I, Warner Bros. Animation's R-Rated adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' iconic graphic novel.

That divisive CG animation style is on full display as Dr. Manhattan is welcomed to The Benny Anger Show. He's confronted by several angry audience members who demand the all-powerful superhero answer for the supposed role he may have played in the people he's crossed paths with over the years being diagnosed with cancer.

As all of this is happening, we see Nite Owl and Silk Spectre - in their civilian guises - fending off an attack from criminals. Everything we see looks like the graphic novel and, unsurprisingly, Zack Snyder's 2009 Watchmen movie (which itself was a near shot-for-shot remake of the source material).

With that in mind, we can't help but wonder what...

The first trailer for Watchmen Chapter I has been released, and with that comes the full voice cast for Warner Bros. Animation's R-Rated adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' iconic graphic novel.

Why Young Justice Season 2 Jumps Forward 5 Years
Image
Young Justice excels at illustrating characters' growth by incorporating significant time jumps between seasons. The time jumps create a closer connection to the characters' adult selves and allow for intriguing narrative possibilities. Showrunners Greg Weisman and Brandon Vietti use time jumps cleverly to maintain audience interest and tie into iconic DC storylines.

Young Justice features a time jump between seasons, but the second season boasted the largest jump of five years. Young Justice depicts DC heroes and sidekicks in their youth as they navigate superherodom and their teenage years. Each season is set some years after the previous season, typically only one or two years. Young Justice season 2, however, had a much longer gap between seasons - which served a very specific purpose.

Young Justice originally aired for two seasons on Cartoon Network before being canceled. It was ultimately revived for DC's streaming service, DC Universe, before releasing Young Justice...

“He did a really terrific job”: The Best Episode of Young Justice That Explored Mental Health Was Written by a Voice-Actor Which Still Resonates After Years
Image
American animated series Young Justice is considered one of the best superhero series ever made. Contrary to its title which suggests that it is an adaptation of Peter David, Todd Dezago, and Todd Nauck’s comic series, the TV series is an original story, set in the DC Universe. It primarily explores the adventures of teenage and young adult superheroes.

A still from Young Justice Season 3

Created by Brandon Vietti and Greg Weisman, the series features numerous young heroes such as Robin, Kid Flash, Aqualad, Superboy, Miss Martian, and Artemis. There are many other animated series based on DC characters, but what sets this one apart is the fact that the creators also intend to give an insight into the mental health of these saviors.

So much so, that there are multiple episodes in the series that focus on different mental health issues. Moreover, it is not just the creators...

“We needed that weight”: Young Justice Made a Major Change to Martian Manhunter’s Home Planet That Made Superman’s Origin Much More Tragic
Image
Young Justice has easily become one of the most beloved animated superhero series in recent times. The series has an excellent lineup of characters, all of which feel well-thought-out and have extremely interesting stories. It picked whatever aspects of a character’s back story they wanted, choosing from the several versions and sticking with them. If they were unable to find the correct pieces, they made changes, creating the intricate puzzle that is the series.

Young Justice

The perfect example of a significant change they made to an original story is Martian Manhunter and Mars as a planet. Going from a destroyed planet to a lively civilization on the brink of civil war, the change brought about a lot of interesting elements to the story.

Marvel’s X-Men ’97 animated superhero series is the talk of the town these days. Another animated series named Young Justice once attracted a fair amount of attention. There are very few animated shows that have gained a cult following to the level of DC’s Young Justice and it is not hard to see why, considering just how influential the four seasons of the show have been, despite being canceled a couple of times.

Young Justice is an animated series that chronicles the adventures of teenage superheroes and sidekicks from DC Comics. Despite its popularity and innovative storytelling, the show was unexpectedly canceled after its first two seasons.

Young Justice Season 4

The reason behind the cancellation was rather unusual. It had nothing to do with the show’s quality or viewership. Instead, toy makers Mattel decided to cancel the series because they didn’t view it as a profitable option for generating revenue. With that said, the show went on for two more seasons and it appears HBO Max played a huge role in it surviving a major change in season 4.

The change in platforms from DC Universe to HBO Max did not significantly impact the direction of Young Justice’s fourth season. While speaking in a 2021 interview with DC,...

“We needed experts”: The DC Hero Young Justice Didn’t Want to Take Any Chances With, Took Direct Help from Muslim Public Affairs Council
Image
Young Justice is easily regarded as one of those animated series from DC that fans just can’t get enough of. Encircling the life of several teenage protege superheroes, it delivered the ultimate justice through its perfect portrayal of the young characters. But out of all the teenagers, there was one whose storyline was helmed with utter care.

Young Justice.

This character was none other than the young superhero who was a result of a Human-Motherbox fusion: Halo, aka Violet Harper. In fact, the creators of the animated show wanted to ensure such utter carefulness while delving into Harper’s storyline that they even went so far as to take help from the Muslim Public Affairs Council for the same!

Young Justice Creators Put Extra Efforts Into Carving Violet Harper

First introduced in Royal We, Violet Harper (or Halo) is one of those incredibly gifted superheroes in the franchise, except...

Why Mars Wasn't Destroyed In Young Justice's Version Of The DC Universe
Image
Arguably, the most famous fictional planet is Krypton -- the home of Kal-El, aka Clark Kent, aka Superman. We all know the story (though studios seem to think we don't) of how Krypton was destroyed, and how the sole (kind of) survivor was baby Kal-El. But while Krypton gets all the attention, it's not the only desolated former metropolis in the DC Universe.

Another essential part of the DC mythos is Mars, our red neighbor. In most of the DC continuity, Mars is mostly devoid of life, with all civilizations having been wiped out through war or a plague, leaving only J'onn J'onzz, aka the Martian Manhunter, alive and stranded on Earth. That is not the case with the acclaimed "Young Justice" animated series, which portrays Mars as having a big, advanced, and very active Martian civilization.

This was by design. The show, which is one of the best superhero TV shows out there,...

‘Batman: Death in the Family’ Blu-ray Review
Image
Features the voices of: Bruce Greenwood, Vincent Martella, John Dimaggio, Zehra Fazal, Kimberly Brooks, Nick Carson, Gary Cole, Nolan North | Written and Directed by Brandon Vietti

Batman: Death in the Family really is something different, in more ways than one. I was pleased to see Warner Bros Animation doing something new and fresh with Batman releases, giving us an interactive movie based on the famous 1988 Batman story-arc, A Death in the Family. You, as the viewer, are in the driver’s seat this time, afforded the opportunity to control the future and paths of the characters on screen.

I’ve dabbled with interactive movies in the past, such as Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, and it’s been a mixed bag but always intriguing and fun to experience in some manner or another. I was excited for this, because after all, this is Batman, this is a world we know and love and are super familiar with,...

Ben Affleck, Jeremy Irons, Amy Adams, Henry Cavill, Jason Momoa, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, and Ray Fisher in Justice League (2017)
What Does Future State Mean for the DC Universe?
Ben Affleck, Jeremy Irons, Amy Adams, Henry Cavill, Jason Momoa, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, and Ray Fisher in Justice League (2017)
It’s somehow almost 2021, which means the DC Universe is about to enter its Future State, the big two month crossover that kicks off the new year by pausing its regular line, and diving deep into the wild, varied timelines and parallel universes for new angles from fresh creators. And we are happy to have your exclusive first look at the February covers and solicitations for the Justice League family of books.

Since half the fun of solicits is trying to piece together what’s happening in the book from the 50 words and a cover, we decided to engage in some wild, semi-informed speculation on what might be coming from DC’s event.

Let’s get right to it: Future State has a very strong Seven Soldiers of Victory vibe.

The original Seven Soldiers were briefly a superteam from the ’40s, brought back sporadically whenever a comic needed a nostalgia boost,...

Edge of Fear (2018)
Looking to The Future of the DC Universe
Edge of Fear (2018)
The beauty of telling stories in a multiverse is the infinite possibility offered by the infinite places and infinite times to set those stories in. DC’s embrace of their multiverse has historically been one of its strongest features, but Crisis on Infinite Earths muted that ability for decades after, and only recently have comics creators started to enthusiastically dive into the concept again. And with Dark Nights: Death Metal wailing towards its conclusion, it looks like DC is set to go head first into the Bleed again.

Future State is the next big DC Comics event. Following the conclusion of Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s explosive reintroduction of the infinite multiverse-slash-musing on what might happen if we let evil get a couple of high profile wins in (gee no real world analogue to that story at all no sir), the entire DC line will be taking a pause for two months,...

Review: Batman: Death in the Family
Image
900 numbers for polling purposes, charging users for each call placed, was a 1980s fad that seemed perfect to employ in comic books for some sort of stunt. Editor Denny O’Neil and DC’s Marketing team, led by Bruce Bristow, conceived of the stunt and Jim Starlin wrote the four-part “Death in the Family” storyline to accommodate the stunt. Jason Todd, the second Robin, never was accepted by fans, either under his father, writer Gerry Conway or the post-Crisis writers Max Allan Collins and Jim Starlin. Callers got to say he would live or die.

It went on to become a media sensation, and a closer than expected vote. It also brought down the wrath of Warner Bros who was unaware of the event and the press attention because, back then, DC was a pimple on the conglomerate’s butt and no one considered telling them.

Still, the strong storyline...

Between Family (2017)
How Batman: A Death in the Family Lets Fans Decide Robin’s Fate
Between Family (2017)
“A Death in the Family” is probably one of the most well known Batman stories of all time. It’s been a cornerstone of Batman’s psychology since it happened, weighing him down with so much guilt over Jason Todd’s death at the hands of the Joker that it changed Batman’s character in every medium for a generation – you see hints of Jason’s fate 20 years later in Batman v Superman, even.

But as much as the fact of Jason’s death impacted Batman stories for decades, so too did its manner: “A Death in the Family” will always be remembered as the comic that gave fans a say in Jason Todd’s ultimate fate. They chose to murder a Robin. And in the latest DC Animated feature, you too will be able to choose to murder a Robin.

“This was the perfect opportunity now, with the Blu-ray...

Watch: New Batman: Death In The Family Clip Shows The Bat Family’s Dark Side
Image
Batman: A Death in the Family is one of the most consequential Batman comic book arcs ever published, showing the second Robin, Jason Todd, having a famously nasty encounter with a crowbar-wielding Joker.

The guilt that the Dark Knight felt went on to heavily inform his character across all media, with the events of the comic being obliquely referenced in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and the backstory of the Arkham Knight video game. A Death in the Family also became the origin of the Red Hood, who’s now a firm fixture in the Batman mythos and got his own animated feature in 2010’s Batman: Under the Red Hood.

That 1988 arc will soon be retold by DC Animation via Batman: Death in the Family, which appears to rework and update the original story. Key differences are that the Jason Todd we see in this clip is older than...
