Rian Johnson will receive the Bill Wittliff Award for Screenwriting at this year’s Austin Film Festival. Johnson is set to receive the award during the 2025 Writers Conference. The conference will take place from Oct. 23 to Oct. 26.

The festival will also screen the Texas premiere of “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery,” the third installment of Johnson’s whodunnit franchise. The film stars Josh O’Connor, Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, Kerry Washington, Andrew Scott, Cailee Spaeny, Daryl McCormack, and Thomas Haden Church.

However, the latest casting and news have me rethinking my skepticism, and maybe there is room for a different take on Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books.

Netflix is rebooting the classic series Little House on the Prairie, which first ran from 1974 to 1983, and per Deadline, seven more actors have just been added to the cast of the revival series. Among those cast in recurring roles in Netflix’s Little House on the Prairie is Barrett Doss, who starred in ABC’s Station 19 from 2018 to 2024.

A fan asked TVLine if Carrie Ingalls was being “retconned out of existence in Netflix’s Little House on the Prairie reboot.” It turns out that there is a simple answer to why the part of Carrie isn’t anywhere to be found. A writer is currently being sought to script the series, which is once again expected to follow the Marshall family as they accidentally go through a portal and find themselves trapped in a world inhabited by dinosaurs, primate-like people named Pakuni, and reptilian humanoids called Sleestak.

The original Land of the Lost ran for three seasons and 43 episodes on NBC from September 1974 to December 1976. Despite its relatively short run, Land of the Lost became a cult classic, leading to a short-lived reboot on ABC in the early 1990s.

Originally written by Laura Ingalls Wilder during the Great Depression, “Little House on the Prairie” is the semi-biographical look at Wilder’s childhood growing up in the American Midwest between 1872 to 1894. The books were first adapted into the hit TV series by the same name, which ran from 1974 to 1983 on NBC. The new reimagined version of “Little House on the Prairie” is said to be “part hopeful family drama, part epic survival tale, and part origin story of the American West,” according to Netflix.

The event, which runs April 29 to May 4, has revealed its Independent Pilot Competition, which features projects across drama, comedy, unscripted digital shorts and late-night.

Until I saw NBC’s Grosse Pointe Garden Society, I’d never thought about how far it might be possible to take a gardening metaphor. Each of the four episodes sent to critics is threaded with voiceover narration, always from a different perspective but invariably laden with floral language comparing individual personalities to specific species or unwanted houseguests to pests.

Despite the early cancellation of Onxy Collective’s “How to Die Alone” at Hulu, creator and star Natasha Rothwell is remaining committed to the show as she shops it around.

“It definitely did come as a shock, but I think this industry is nothing if not ever-changing, and I’m nothing if not resilient,” Rothwell told TheWrap while completing press for “The White Lotus” Season 3. “It took me eight years to get the show made, and I have every intention of taking it out and seeing if there’s an appetite for it.”

“If nothing comes of that, I’m so proud of the work that I’ve done,” Rothwell continued. “I’m so proud of the writers and the actors and that something like that exists in the world, and I’ll continue to fight to write and create content that centers marginalized voices.”

ABC’s High Potential episode 12’s case of the week involves a man who exited a private plane, began foaming at the mouth, and then died on the tarmac. The coroner believes it’s death by poison.

Morgan (Kaitlin Olson) joins Adam (Daniel Sunjata), Daphne (Javicia Leslie), and Oz (Deniz Akdeniz) at the airport and gets the rundown on the deceased. He’s Anson Pierce, founder of a tech company that developed a controversial social media platform. His app creates deepfakes from existing videos … deepfakes that can ruin lives.

Anson was traveling with his dog and a security team, and they’re all fine.

FBI Special Agent Ronnie Oliver (Jocko Sims) believes the death is in the FBI’s jurisdiction because it happened in US airspace. Oliver makes the mistake of speaking past Morgan to Adam to find out her name.

After its streaming release on Hulu last year, How to Die Alone garnered some very strong reviews. However, it would seem that this wasn't enough to save the series.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, How to Die Alone has been canceled at Hulu after one season. It's an unfortunate update for fans of the show who'd been waiting for over four months to see if another season would be coming or not. The show has a high score of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, garnering very high acclaim from critics, with a strong audience score that's not too far behind at 83%. No specific reason was reported for why the show has been canceled, but it seems likely that it's because viewership numbers weren't as high as Hulu had been hoping for.

Hulu continues to cancel fan-favorite shows before they can become mainstream successes, and their latest cancellation is no different. How to Die Alone, created by and starring Sonic the Hedgehog scene-stealer Natasha Rothwell, has been canceled by the streaming service after just one season on the platform. Although critics adored the comedy, with reviews earning it a 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes, it seems Hulu did not find enough reason to greenlight another set of episodes for How to Die Alone.

On Tuesday, Hulu officially declined to renew How to Die Alone (via Deadline) for another season. It's unclear why the streamer decided to not move forward with more episodes, but it would not be the first time Hulu prematurely ended a show's lifespan. Rothwell, series creator and star, released a statement about the surprising news, expressing her shock and disappointment. Her words:

The news comes about 4 1/2 months after the series, created by and starring Natasha Rothwell, wrapped its eight-episode season on the streamer. The show was produced by Onyx Collective, which like Hulu is part of Disney.

How to Die Alone stars Rothwell as a “a broke, fat, Black JFK Airport employee who’s never been in love and forgotten how to dream, until an accidental brush with death catapults her on a journey to finally take flight and start living by any means necessary.” Conrad Ricamora, Jocko Sims and KeiLyn Durrel Jones also star.

Conrad Ricamora, Jocko Sims and KeiLyn Durrel Jones starred alongside Rothwell and Bashir Salahuddin recurred.

Creator Rothwell and Vera Santamaria served as co-showrunners and executive producers. Desiree Akhavan also served as an executive producer. How to Die Alone was produced by ABC Signature in association with Big Hattie Productions.

Before Morgan (Kaitlin Olson), there was Oliver (Jocko Sims). In High Potential Season 1, Episode 12, "Partners," the show fills in some aspects of Karadec's (Daniel Sunjata) past through a former partner. In law enforcement, work partners are almost like domestic partners, and drama ensues when the relationship turns sour. The murder of a controversial tech powerhouse brings in the FBI, and the agent sent to investigate this case turns out to be Karadec's former partner. Their relationship did not end well, and those wounds are reopened during this reunion. ABC released a sneak peek of the February 4 episode which sees the rehashing of the past per the logline below.

Nothing makes a person more territorial than when an ex comes waltzing back into their partner’s life. In High Potential’s case, it’s Karadec’s ex-partner, but maybe not in the way you think.

The next episode seems to be drawing a lot of attention to workplace partnerships, specifically those tied to Karadec.

From what’s seen in the promo, the series wouldn’t be nearly as fun without the dynamic duo Karadec and Morgan.

We gleaned from the High Potential Season 1 Episode 12 promo that Karadec’s former partner, Oliver, now an FBI agent, will be assisting the cops on a case. Que the cliched “Cops and Feds don’t mix” trope that many shows like to use.
