Why NBC Canceled Grosse Pointe Garden Society
Image
Fans of NBC drama "Grosse Pointe Garden Society" were dismayed to learn that the series had been cancelled in 2025 after just one season — especially since the season finale ended on a cliffhanger that will seemingly never be resolved. The history of TV is littered with shows that didn't last beyond their debut season, and not all of them are bad. Some great sci-fi series were axed after just one season, and some of the best TV shows you'll ever see were similarly cancelled after one season. Fans of "Grosse Pointe Garden Society" would certainly argue the show belongs in that latter category, and the critical response to the NBC drama certainly suggested it was one of the better series to end so quickly. So, why did the network bury this seemingly successful murder mystery show?

Back in July 2024, "Grosse Pointe Garden Society" received a series order from NBC, and things were looking promising.

The Fate of Twisty Murder-Mystery Show 'Grosse Pointe Garden Society' Has Been Decided
Image
The garden party is officially over. NBC has finally clipped the last stem of Grosse Pointe Garden Society after the freshman murder-mystery drama set in a leafy Michigan suburb never quite found its footing. Its cancellation brings NBC’s 2025–26 bloodbath of axed scripted content to six, with Grosse Pointe Garden Society joining Suits: LA, The Irrational, Found, Night Court, and Lopez vs. Lopezin the dead show garden. It’s a clear indication that the network is doing some aggressive pruning ahead of the next season.

Created byGood Girls masterminds Jenna Bans and Bill Krebs, Grosse Pointe Garden Societystarted with great promise, with what seemed like a blend of Desperate Housewives-style suburban drama and mystery intrigue. Unfortunately, it appears the petals wilted before the show could find solid ground. Despite a solid cast and a decent storyline, the ratings didn’t quite blossom as NBC had hoped.

In hindsight, it...

Melissa Fumero Breaks Silence On Grosse Pointe Garden Society's Cancelation: "It’s Really Hard To Make A Show"

The crime dramedy, which hails from Good Girls executive producers Jenna Bans and Bill Krebs, the crime dramedy centers on four members of a suburban garden club who must work together to cover up a murder, but their own secrets soon bubble up to the surface.

Following the cancellation of Grosse Pointe Garden Society, Fumero responded to the news on her Threads account. The actress, who played Birdie, noted that the character “felt like an amalgamation of every role I’ve ever played.”. She also touches on the fact that it's difficult to make a show.

NBC Kills Grosse Pointe Garden Society After One Season
Melissa Fumero at an event for Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2013)
NBC has pulled the plug on Grosse Pointe Garden Society two weeks after its first-season finale, confirming that the murder-tinged dramedy will not return and will not shift to Peacock as some insiders had hoped. The decision ends creator-showrunners Jenna Bans and Bill Krebs’ suburban whodunit after just 13 episodes and fewer than five months on the air.

Warning signs had mounted when the series was relocated from a solid Sunday 10 p.m. berth to Friday at 8 p.m., a slot networks often reserve for low-priority titles. Nielsen data show premiere viewership of 1.79 million slipped to 1.37 million for the May 16 finale, though Peacock streams reportedly outperformed linear numbers.

Stars reacted swiftly online. Melissa Fumero posted “Will miss our Gpgs family” on Instagram Stories, while co-lead Jennifer Irwin thanked fans for “keeping the plants blooming even in winter.” On X, cast members reposted Deadline’s headline with a broken-heart emoji and the refrain “This one stings.

‘Grosse Pointe Garden Society’ Canceled After One Season At NBC, No Future On Streaming At Peacock
Image
Despite moving the show to Friday nights in the hopes of generating a few more eyeballs in an earlier time, NBC has decided against a second season of freshman drama “Grosse Pointe Garden Society.”

The news isn’t surprising as the series failed to gain traction on its new night, particularly as it was the only series left over from the 2024-2025 season to have its fate decided by the time the network unveiled its 2025-2026 primetime schedule.

According to Deadline, which first reported the cancellation news, executives had been exploring whether to move the heavily serialized series to Peacock in the hopes of it continuing but ultimately decided against it after going over the financials, citing data showing it would be “hard for the series to grow its audience” on the streaming service, the Friday move did lead to increased viewership on Peacock as potential viewers were able to...

Fumero added in a post on the grid, “Oh, Birdie. You were one for the books. You felt like an amalgamation of every role I’ve ever played. Melissa Fumero's Crime Drama With 85% Audience Score Gets Canceled by NBC After 1 Season
Image
It's going to be a one-season run for the crime drama series Grosse Pointe Garden Society. The news is going to be disappointing for a lot of fans who had given the series a strong audience score of 85% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Grosse Pointe Garden Society has been canceled by NBC after just one season. Canceling the series comes about five weeks after the show aired its first season finale, which will now serve as the series finale. Reportedly, the decision wasn't swift, as NBCUniversal had been exploring the possibility of continuing Grosse Pointe Garden Society on the streaming service Peacock. However, a deal was not able to come together, at which point the choice was made to put the series on ice.

The show was created by Jenna Bans and Bill Krebs. It told the story of four members of a suburban gardening club in Grosse Pointe,...

‘Grosse Pointe Garden Society’ Canceled by NBC After One Season
Image
Grosse Point Garden Society has been canceled by NBC after one season.

The cancellation comes after the drama series, whose fate had been left undecided at the time the the bulk of NBC’s 2025-26 lineup was unveiled in May, was previously being considered for a move to Peacock. However, the network ultimately opted not to move forward with that plan.

A potential move to the NBCUniversal-owned Peacock was hinted at by showrunners Jenna Bans and Bill Krebs, who told TheWrap they knew that “Grosse Pointe” was performing well on streaming. Last year, NBC previously moved “Law & Order: Organized Crime” to Peacock after letting it go from its schedule.

“We know we have a lot of support at the network and people love it creatively, so we’re just hopeful they’ll find a way to bring us back. It might not be a traditional way, but we’ll see,...

‘Grosse Pointe Garden Society’ Canceled at NBC After a Single Season
Image
NBC is disbanding the Grosse Pointe Garden Society.

The network has canceled the first-year series, which comes from in-house studio Universal Television and creators Jenna Bans and Bill Krebs (Good Girls). The decision comes five weeks after the show aired its first season — now series — finale.

The delayed decision was due in part to NBCUniversal exploring a potential move to Peacock for the series. A deal didn’t come together, however, leading to the end for Grosse Pointe Garden Society.

The series stars AnnaSophia Robb, Melissa Fumero, Ben Rappaport and Aja Naomi King as four members of a garden club in the titular Detroit suburb whose lives become intertwined by scandal and a shared secret — a murder none of them wants to discuss. Matthew Davis, Alexander Hodge, Nancy Travis and Felix Wolfe also star.

Grosse Pointe Garden Society premiered in February, paired with Suits LA on NBC’s post-football Sunday night schedule.

‘Grosse Pointe Garden Society’ Canceled After One Season at NBC

“Grosse Pointe Garden Society” has been canceled at NBC after just one season, Variety has learned.

Per the official logline, the show is said to follow “four members of a suburban garden club who find their lives intertwined by scandal, mischief and a shared secret – a murder no one wants to talk about. As dark truths begin to rot their lives under the surface, they struggle to remain as perfect as the flowers blooming in their garden above.”

The cast includes “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” alum Melissa Fumero as well as Aja Naomi King, Ben Rappaport, AnnaSophia Robb, Matthew Davis, Alexander Hodge, Nancy Travis, and Felix Wolfe. ‘Grosse Pointe Garden Society’ Canceled By NBC After One Season, Won’t Move To Peacock
Image
Exclusive: NBC’s suburban garden club is shutting down as the network has opted not to renew freshman drama Grosse Pointe Garden Society for a second season.

The news comes six weeks after NBC unveiled the bulk of its 2025-26 lineup, with Grosse Pointe Garden Society, from the Good Girls duo of Jenna Bans and Bill Krebs, as the only 2024-25 series whose fate was left undecided. That is because, as Deadline has reported, NBCUniversal executives wanted to explore the possibility of the serialized drama migrating to streamer Peacock.

After some number crunching, I hear it was ultimately decided that it would be hard for the series to grow its audience on Peacock, leading to the cancellation as the options of the cast were about to expire Monday.

A renewal by NBC had been pretty much out of the question as the mystery drama was a soft linear ratings performer,...

New Grosse Point Garden Society Season 2 Still In Question. NBC Hasn’t Renewed It Yet
Image
According to TheWrap, and their sources, NBC has yet to renew Grosse Point Garden Society for a brand new season 2 as of this writing. They're telling us that an NBC scheduling executive is claiming that a season 2 renewal from NBC seems unlikely right now, but plans to possibly move it to NBC's Peacock streaming service is being discussed. They're also saying that NBC didn't include Grosse Point Garden Society in their 2025-2026 schedule. NBC has gone on a cancelling spree as of late, cancelling “Suits LA,” “Found,” “The Irrational,” “Night Court” and “Lopez vs Lopez.” Showrunner Jenna Bans made a statement about Grosse Point Garden Society's future stating, "We know we have a lot of support at the network and people love it creatively, so we’re just hopeful they’ll find a way to bring us back. Inside NBC Cancellations: Why ‘Brilliant Minds’ and ‘The Hunting Party’ Survived and ‘Suits LA,’ ‘Found’ Didn’t
Image
NBC’s lineup underwent a bloodbath ahead of welcoming back the NBA this fall, when “Found,” “Suits: LA,” “The Irrational,” “Night Court” and “Lopez vs Lopez” were all canceled. While fans of the series lamented the cancellations, a closer look at the ratings explains why freshman shows “Brilliant Minds” and “The Hunting Party” joined the ranks of renewed series while others didn’t make the cut.

NBC’s three “Chicago” series, all of which scored renewals, were the network’s most-watched shows of the season, according to multiplatform live-plus-35-day viewing figures, with “Chicago Fire” averaging 10.36 million viewers, and “Chicago P.D.” and “Chicago Med” at 10.05 million and 9.59 million, respectively. Like past years, the “Chicagos” and two “Law & Order” shows were consistent hits, with “Law & Order: Svu” and the original “Law & Order” bringing in 8.92 million and 6.76 million average viewers.

Notably, “Brilliant Minds” and “The Hunting Party” — the only...

‘Grosse Pointe Garden Society’ Not Canceled Yet, NBC Ponders Move to Peacock
Image
While the chances for “Grosse Pointe Garden Society” to score a Season 2 renewal from NBC aren’t looking great, there’s possibility the freshman drama series could move to Peacock — a potential fate that is “still being discussed” according to one NBC scheduling exec.

The drama series from Jenna Bans and Bill Krebs was not included in NBC’s 2025-26 schedule, which revealed Season 2 renewals for “Brilliant Minds” and “The Hunting Party” alongside all three “Chicago” series, “Law & Order” and “Law & Order: Svu.”

Bader noted a potential move to Peacock was discussed for every show that did not make the cut for NBC’s lineup next season. The impending move of the NBA to Tuesdays nights prompted a flurry of cancellations Friday, including dramas “Suits LA,” “Found” and “The Irrational,” and comedy series “Night Court” and “Lopez vs Lopez.”

A potential move to the NBCUniversal-owned Peacock was...

NBC Renewal Status Report: Chicago Trio, ‘Law & Order’ Duo, ‘Brilliant Minds’, ‘Suits: LA’ & More
Image
NBC’s lineup resembles one giant bubble this year with only two of 15 current scripted series — representing an hour of primetime — renewed and most of the others in serious limbo as the network’s scripted and unscripted rosters are facing a major trim to make room for about 180 hours of primetime NBA programming next season.

In addition to the already picked up freshmen comedies St. Denis Medical and Happy’s Place, the list of scripted locks for 2025-2026 is short, and each title on it has the same name next to it: Dick Wolf. Like every year, there are budget conversations between the network and sister studio Universal Television, but the three Chicago dramas and the two Law & Order series on NBC are all expected to return next season.

It would come as no surprise as Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D., Chicago Med and Law & Order: Svu lead...

The swiftness of NBC’s action is understandable as Grosse Pointe has been drawing very low linear ratings, with the series sitting at the bottom of all of the network’s series in both total audience and adults 18-49, averaging just over a million viewers in Live+ Same Day the last two weeks.

While a move to the low-trafficked Friday night for a new broadcast series would’ve meant a certain death back in the day, the rules are different in the streaming age.

With its serialized mystery-themed storytelling, Grosse Pointe, from the Good Girls duo of Jenna Bans and Bill Krebs, was always considered better suited for streaming. As Deadline reported last year,...

‘Grosse Pointe Garden Society’ Moving to Friday Nights on NBC
Image
A midstream scheduling change is a rarity for networks in recent years, but one is happening at NBC.

The network will move its first-year drama Grosse Pointe Garden Society from Sunday to Friday nights starting April 4. The show will take the 8 p.m. spot currently occupied by Happy’s Place; the Reba McEntire-led comedy finishes its season March 21. Episodes of Dateline will take over the 10 p.m. Sunday slot after Grosse Pointe Garden Society moves.

The change in nights is meant to help Grosse Pointe Garden Society get some more eyes to its on-air showings. The series, which follows members of a suburban garden club whose lives become entangled with scandal and secrets — and a murder — has found some traction streaming on Peacock, but its on-air viewing has struggled some.

Through its first three episodes, Grosse Pointe Garden Society has averaged a scant 1.29 million same-day viewers, making it NBC’s lowest on-air performance this season.

Grosse Pointe Garden Society Shuffled to Fridays at NBC — When Does It Move?

Grosse Pointe Garden Society is getting re-planted elsewhere on NBC’s schedule.

‘Grosse Pointe Garden Society’ to Shift to Friday Nights Starting in April
Image
“Grosse Pointe Garden Society” is on the move.

NBC is moving the drama series from its current Sunday night timeslot to Fridays at 8 p.m. Et/Pt beginning April 4. “Dateline NBC” will take over the Sunday 10 p.m. slot.

The move does not bode well for the future of “Grosse Pointe,” as a move to Fridays midway through a freshman season typically indicates a show is destined for cancellation. NBC has been successfully programming comedies on Friday nights of late, however, with the Reba McEntire multi-cam “Happy’s Place” recently earning a Season 2 renewal. The season finale of that show is set to air on March 21.

Still, despite relatively solid reviews, “Grosse Pointe” has failed to make a major impact in the broadcast ratings. Per NBC, the pilot has grown to a 1.21 rating in the adults 18-49 demo and 6.6 million total viewers across all platforms since it originally debuted on Feb.

How ‘Grosse Pointe Garden Society’ Erewhon’d Its Garden and Everything Else
Image
Secrets and intrigue lurk beneath the dirt in “Grosse Pointe Garden Society.” But for as much as garden club members Birdie (Melissa Fumero), Catherine (Aja Naomi King), Brett (Ben Rappaport), and Alice (AnnaSophia Robb) find themselves drawn together in a metaphorical, murderous hot house, the team behind the series had to dig deep to make the NBC series look as fancy, frothy, and fun as the characters are meant to be.

Production designer Adam Davis and his team brought in 1,200 different plants, silk lookalikes, and pops of color to establish the garden in the pilot. But that was only the starting point for the show’s rich-looking facade. While every garden must be maintained, it’s especially tricky to do so over the course of a full season of television, with a break between the pilot and the remainder of the series. And even though “Grosse Pointe Garden Society” shoots in Atlanta,...

"We Don’t Make the Audience Wait Too Long.": 'Grosse Pointe Garden Society's Victim Reveal Is Coming Sooner Than You Think
Image
The pilot episode of Grosse Pointe Garden Society introduced everything about the four main characters whose public lives converged at a neighborhood gardening club. In their personal lives, however, they were dealing with problems stemming from hurtful actions by others, including loved ones. Despite presenting curated images to the outside world, the characters unraveled, and it was revealed that six months into the future, someone had been murdered. They covered it up by burying the victim in the garden, hoping it would be the last time they had to deal with it. That set up a mystery about who was dead, why they died, and if they were murdered, who did it. The episode also teased the eventual exposing of the secret when the garden was set to be dug up. Jenna Bans and Bill Krebs created the series, and in an interview with TV Line, they said that the...

Grosse Pointe Garden Society Premiere Review: Desperate Housewives for 2025
Image
Quick LinksGrosse Pointe Garden Society Is Stolen by Melissa FumeroThe Murder in Grosse Pointe Garden Society Is Its Ongoing HookIs Grosse Pointe Garden Society Worth Watching on NBC?

The following contains major spoilers from Grosse Pointe Garden Society Season 1, Episode 1, "Pilot," which debuted Sunday, Feb. 23 on NBC.

It's no shock that NBC's Grosse Pointe Garden Society is from the creators of Good Girls, because the show is a combination of that and Desperate Housewives. A group of seemingly normal suburban characters are revealed to be not that normal and there's a criminal element to their story. But whereas Desperate Housewives opened with Mary Alice Young taking her own life, Jenna Bans and Bill Krebs start Grosse Pointe Garden Society with a murder.

The title refers to the community group that all of the main characters are a part of. Their lives in Grosse Pointe, Michigan seem ideal, but as is...

The Grosse Pointe Garden Society Premiere Went Right for the Jugular When It Comes to Balancing Comedy with Believable Drama
Image
Like carefully picked posies, Grosse Pointe Garden Society has chosen the cream of the crop to fill out this bouquet of familiar faces from all over the Television spectrum.

But be careful who you pluck. These flowers are more dangerous than meets the eye and might just leave you bleeding.

One thing Grosse Pointe Garden Society has going for it is that it inspires the same feeling of whimsical comedies that are light on the drama but heavy on the killer mysteries.

(Steve Swisher/NBC)

Not only are the characters riddled with layers that keep you guessing who they really are under those forced smiles, but the show itself already hides a mystery in plain sight.

NBC’s ‘Grosse Pointe Garden Society’ Delivers Murder, Mayhem and Soapy Chaos: TV Review
Image
A good murder mystery is one thing, but when a TV show also manages to infuse distinct characters and extreme albeit hilarious melodrama, it’s certainly worth tuning into. From “Good Girls” creator Jenna Bans and co-creator, Bill Krebs comes “Grosse Pointe Garden Society,” the latest unique drama with the same elements that made shows like “Desperate Housewives” and “How to Get Away with Murder” such standout hits. Despite a handful of missteps, the NBC show is engrossing, confounding and off to a promising start. Set in Grosse Pointe, Michigan (a wealthy suburb of Detroit), and centering on four local garden club members, the series is a reminder that putting a soapy spin on reliable formulas mostly leads to success.

“Grosse Pointe Garden Society” opens as a shovel hits the dirt, and a body is dumped in a large hole. However, before the audience can orient themselves into the scene,...

‘Grosse Pointe Garden Society’ Review: NBC’s Suburban Murder Dramedy Fails to Flower
Image
Until I saw NBC’s Grosse Pointe Garden Society, I’d never thought about how far it might be possible to take a gardening metaphor. Each of the four episodes sent to critics is threaded with voiceover narration, always from a different perspective but invariably laden with floral language comparing individual personalities to specific species or unwanted houseguests to pests.

To the extent that this series has a distinctive edge, it might be its commitment to this specific bit. A tiny part of me hopes it runs for a hundred episodes just to hear how tenuous or obscure the plant-based symbolism can get.

A much larger part of me, however, cannot bring myself to care whether it sticks around or not. Alice (AnnaSophia Robb) might liken herself to a wild geranium or her bestie Brett (Ben Rappaport) to a hardy dandelion. But the show they’re on is the TV...

Grosse Pointe Garden Society Trailer: NBC’s Steamy New Drama Packs A Killer Secret
Image
NBC is diving into the murderous world of a suburban garden club with Grosse Pointe Garden Society.

Based on the trailer alone, we’re already invested.

It’s hard to get a read on a show from a 60-second trailer, but the hook is compelling, and the cast is an embarrassment of riches, meaning we should be in for one of the more buzzy shows of the 2024-25 TV season.

(NBC/Screenshot)

According to NBC, the new one-hour drama “follows four members of a suburban garden club who find their lives intertwined by scandal, mischief, and a shared secret — a murder no one wants to talk about.”

Oh my!

“As dark truths begin to rot their lives under the surface, they try to struggle to remain as perfect as the flowers blooming in the garden above.”

Grosse Point Garden Society is set to premiere on Sunday, February 23, at 10/9c on NBC.
