Exclusive: The musical adaptation of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, John Berendt’s bestselling nonfiction tale of murder and moss-covered secrets in Savannah, Ga, will debut on Broadway in 2025 following an extended premiere run in Chicago, producers announced today.
Written by Taylor Mac, with music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown, choreography by Tanya Birl-Torres (How I Learned What I Learned) and direction by Rob Ashford (Cat on a Hot Tin Roof), Midnight is set in Savannah, where the eccentric Southern charm and polite smiles hide secrets and mysteries, the latest involving wealthy antiques dealer and accused murderer Jim Williams. For a company that doesn’t ‘have to have’ the NBA, Wbd is looking more and more desperate to retain its rights at any cost.
Warner Bros. Discovery isn’t letting the NBA go without a fight… or two… or three. The company’s prospects for acquiring a package of NBA regular season and playoff games equivalent to what it has now in the league’s next national broadcasting rights deal seems to grow smaller every day, but that doesn’t mean that CEO David Zaslav is ready to throw in the towel just yet. Puck News has new details on Wbd’s new focus, a fourth package of games that could be carved out that would allow it to keep the NBA on TNT past the 2024-25 season.
Key Details: Wbd’s prospective fourth package could be made up of games that were formerly local broadcasts converted into national games.

That sweet and innocent-looking friendly neighborhood Spider-Man guy from Marvel, who rampaged about spilling spoilers during interviews out of excitement, seems to be gone now. Looking at Tom Holland in the latest look for his Romeo & Juliet play seems a lot different than his usual happy-go-lucky ones. In fact, he feels completely different after witnessing him with his on-stage love interest for the play, Francesca Amewudah-Rivers.
Tom Holland in a still from The Devil All The Time.
However, fans aren’t clamoring in support of this duo, especially for their pairing up for the stage as the iconic couple from Shakespeare’s lore. This comes after the first look images of Holland and Amewudah-Rivers as their respective characters were released, which, unarguably, have been garnering quite a bit of sarcastic and terribly negative reviews and backlash from fans.

No news would have been good news for the NCAA’s Pac-12 conference this week. Instead, a report from CBS outlined the difficulties the Pac-12 has been having in finding a broadcast partner that is willing to air more than 50% of its games.
Fewer games on broadcast TV means less exposure for school brands, making it more difficult to recruit top-flight players. The Pac-12’s media rights are set to hit the open market in 2024, and negotiations are being hampered by the fact that two of its most popular and recognizable schools — UCLA and USC — are leaving the conference in fall of 2024 for the Big Ten.
Reporting from The Athletic indicates even internal timelines for a broadcast deal have been thrown off. University of Arizona president Robert Robbins told that publication he thought a deal was mere weeks away in March, but now that estimate is being pushed back. Sources...

The Pac-12 is running out of time. Once one of the NCAA’s premier athletic conferences, the organization is now having a great deal of trouble finding a partner for its next broadcast rights deal. The Pac-12 currently has an agreement in place with Fox and ESPN, but that deal expires in 2024.
The conference has cycled through a myriad of potential partners in its search, including digital options like Amazon and Apple. But desperation may set in soon, as CBS Sports reports the Pac-12 is now unlikely to find a broadcast partner that will air more than 50% of its games on linear television.
The report cites longtime sports media consultant Jim Williams, who says that most of the major TV providers in the market are hesitant to broadcast Pac-12 games at the price the conference wants to get out of them. The conference reportedly wants something in the neighborhood...

Music is intrinsically and irrevocably intertwined with cinema; it is never more vital than in horror. What builds mood, tension, and fear better than sound design and an unsettling score?

Korven is a Toronto-based award winning composer and multi-instrumentalist. He is known for his innovation and experimental approach to film scoring. Before composer Jim Williams’ had ever heard of “Resurrection,” his music was a key component of writer-director Andrew Semans’ daring and affecting new thriller. “We temped a lot of the movie with Jim Williams before Jim Williams even came on,” Semans told IndieWire. “‘We were like, ‘Well, he’s all over the movie already, maybe we can get him.’” “Resurrection,” a film that is simultaneously a heartbreaking character study, a disturbing body horror film, and at times a pitch-black comedy, was exactly the kind of project that tends to attract Williams. Given credits on his resume like “A Field in England,” “Possessor,” and Julia Ducourneau’s “Raw” and “Titane,” the composer is clearly interested in the unusual and the challenging.
“I’m drawn to the opportunity to try something out of the ordinary,” Williams told IndieWire. “Julia Ducourneau and Andrew Semans give me a lot of scope to be creative.

Stars: Rebecca Hall, Tim Roth, Grace Kaufman, Michael Esper, Angela Wong Carbone | Written and Directed by Andrew Semans
Rebecca Hall follows her terrific turn in The Night House with yet another stunning horror performance in Resurrection, a twisted psychological thriller from writer-director Andrew Semans. By turns chilling and disturbing, it’s a gripping study of trauma and madness.
Hall plays Margaret, a successful businesswoman in upstate New York, whose teenage daughter Abbie (Grace Kaufman) is on the verge of leaving for college. Margaret’s life is rigidly controlled and ordered, until she spots David (Tim Roth) at a conference and has a panic attack that sends her spiralling into terror. Soon, Margaret begins seeing David everywhere, triggering memories of their horrific past together. But is David’s current threat all in her head, or is something much darker going on?

Not all is well from the opening scenes of Andrew Semans’ Resurrection, based on his own Black List-charting script, which begins as a chilly, slick workplace and mother-daughter drama before exploding into a stomach-churning psychological thriller. Though its preposterous narrative ends up getting into rather silly territory that obfuscates its initial, more pertinent thematic ideas, the film is another stellar showcase for the immense talent of Rebecca Hall. One also can’t entirely fault the director for following through and taking his rather illogically extreme set-up to its most logically absurd conclusion.
Single mother to a teenage daughter, Margaret (Rebecca Hall) is an established businesswoman—not only seemingly the leader of her team but also a trusted source of romantic wisdom, offering advice to a female co-worker who is in a bad relationship. As Martin Scorsese once said, “Music and cinema fit together naturally. Because there’s a kind of intrinsic musicality to the way moving images work when they’re put together. It’s been said that cinema and music are very close as art forms, and I think that’s true.” Indeed, the right piece of music–whether it’s an original score or a carefully selected song–can do wonders for a sequence, and today we’re looking at the 25+ films that best expressed this notion this year.

Altitude and Film4 have acquired writer/director Julia Ducournau’s Cannes Film Festival competition title “Titane” for U.K. and Ireland.
In the horror thriller, following a series of unexplained crimes, a father is reunited with the son who disappeared ten years ago.
The film stars newcomer Agathe Rousselle, Cannes best actor winner Vincent Lindon (“The Measure of a Man”), Laïs Salameh (“Le rêve de Mila”) and reunites Ducournau with her “Raw” star Garance Marillier.
Horror hit “Raw” was selected at the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight in 2016 and won the Fipresci prize there before going on to global acclaim and awards including the Sutherland award for best first feature at the BFI London Film Festival and a clutch of prizes at Sitges – Catalonian International Film Festival.
Film4 and Altitude have co-acquired the film and will collaborate on the theatrical release later this year. Film4 will retain broadcast and on-demand rights in the U.

As Martin Scorsese once said, “Music and cinema fit together naturally. Because there’s a kind of intrinsic musicality to the way moving images work when they’re put together. It’s been said that cinema and music are very close as art forms, and I think that’s true.” Indeed, the right piece of music–whether it’s an original score or a carefully selected song–can do wonders for a sequence, and today we’re looking at the 20 films that best expressed this notion this year.
From seasoned composers to accomplished musicians, as well as a smattering of soundtracks, each musical example perfectly transported us to the world of the film. Check out our rundown of the top 20, which includes streams to each soundtrack in full where available.

Brandon Cronenberg has a difficult burden on his shoulders, living up to his father’s immense filmmaking legacy as the master of body horror and one of the greatest filmmakers around. With his mind-bending sophomore feature, Brandon exhibits his dad’s penchant for gruesome violence but proves his worth as a supremely talented, visionary director in his own right. Possessor combines an engrossing high-concept script with bold visuals and plenty of blood-soaked thrills in this jaw-droppingly brilliant sci-fi trip.
Set in an alternate 2008, the plot revolves around hitwoman-for-hire Tasya Vos (Andrea Riseborough) who uses brain-implant technology to hijack people’s bodies so she can carry out assassinations that benefit her shadowy employer. By disguising herself as someone close to the target she’s able to efficiently undertake the murder and then return to her own body by forcing her host to commit suicide. As one of the best and most...

It would have been completely understandable if Brandon Cronenberg had looked to become a completely different sort of director than his father. After all, David Cronenberg is a very specific kind of auteur. However, the younger Cronenberg has staked out a claim to similar territory, albeit with his own spin. His sophomore effort Possessor (or Possessor: Uncut), is strong evidence of that. A bizarre, gory, and rather unique science fiction thriller, this is very much what you’d hope for out of a Cronenberg production (whichever director you prefer). If you dislike that sort of thing, it’s not going to change your mind. If you’re a fan, however, this is going to be a violent and weird treat. The film is a sci-fi thriller, with a little bit of body horror thrown in, for good Cronenberg measure. In this world, technology exists to allow someone to inhabit another person’s body,...

One of Fantasia 2020’s hottest premieres is Kriya, which comes from writer/director Sidharth Srinivasan of Reel Illusion Films (Soul of Sand), and producers Tejash Shah of Accord Equips Pvt. Ltd. (Headhunter) and B. S. Narayanaswamy (Court).
DJ Neel encounters the ravishing Sitara while working a club set one night and is transfixed by her. They return to Sitara’s place where Neel is horrified to see the gagged and shackled body of her dying father – Sitara’s grieving family keeping vigil around it. Caught completely unawares, Neel’s compassion is nevertheless aroused and he stays on. In India, patriarchal custom dictates that only a son can perform a parent’s last rites, but no such person exists in Sitara’s family. So when her father actually dies during the course of the night, Sitara coerces Neel to officiate the rituals of death. Thrust into a world of magic and transgression,...

One that Neel is now very much a part of.

Sit down before you watch this. With the fall festival season about to kick off, some exciting new films are about to premiere. Kriya is an Indian film described as "the nightmare odyssey of a young DJ named Neel (Noble Luke) who is picked up one fateful night by the beautiful Sitara, only to be thrust into a hallucinatory world of ritual magic surrounding the imminent death of her father." That sounds a bit vague, but perhaps it's best to leave it that way. "It's an aesthetically beautiful film, mystically atmospheric and imbued with a creeping unease that casts an uncommon spell." Co-Produced by Andy Starke (of In Fabric) and Pete Tombs (of Free Fire), with an unforgettable score by Jim Williams, "Kriya is a strange and wondrous nightmare odyssey of ritual magic. It demands to be met on its own terms and rewards the curious with unexpected charms. Light a candle and prepare yourself.

Chicago – I can’t recommend this more. “A Field in England” is a flashback and a flash forward all at once. It’s impossible to watch without thinking of great counter culture cinema. In fact when I saw it at Fantastic Fest 2013 it played as part of a double bill with Ken Russell’s “The Devils” (1971). They made perfect cinematic companion pieces. Russell’s film concerned a wayward priest desperate to protect his 17th century city from corruption in the Church only to fall victim to group hysteria when he is, ironically, accused of witchcraft by a jealous nun.
Ben Wheatley’s film is about a 17th century group of war deserters inexplicably taken hostage by a would be alchemist who forces them to aid in the search for treasure. The group is torn asunder by infighting and paranoia as their first meal, of tainted mushrooms, leaves them vulnerable to...

A Field In England, prolific low-budget and lo-fi filmmaker Ben Wheatley’s latest effort, continues the original and highly distinctive work he’s made thus far but pushes past boundaries and expectations to create a brilliantly psychotic burst of filmmaking which feels like it’s ventured forth from a parallel universe version of the 1960s.
With a budget of £300,000 and a shoot lasting 12 days, it’s rather incredible the finished film feels so perfectly polished but helped some fantastic cinematography from Laurie Rose and great sound design and music by Martin Pavey and Jim Williams respectively, the film takes top hold of the throat from the off with the sounds of war invading the soundscape and percussive score belying the budget and evoking filly the...

One of Britain's best young film directors on the music, books and art currently catching his eye
Considered by many critics to be one of Britain's most significant young directors, Essex-born Ben Wheatley's career began when his short films went viral. After directing comedy series Modern Toss for Channel 4, he wrote, produced and directed his first feature film, Down Terrace (2009), shot it in eight days, and won numerous awards. Following his horror film Kill List (2011), Wheatley directed Sightseers (2012), a dark comedy about a couple on a caravan trip, which enjoyed international critical acclaim. His fourth film, A Field in England, will be released this summer.

I use Spotify tons, it's totally opened my mind to music. I've always thought that music was expensive; back in the days of CDs I'd buy maybe one a year and feel very resentful about it. But now, through the wonders of Spotify,...

Ben Wheatley's Kill List is unquestionably the most deeply disturbing film I've seen in years. It's The Wicker Man - the original, not the godawful Nicolas Cage remake - meets Oldboy, and if you've seen either or both of those films, you know I'm talking about a special kind of effed up subject matter here.
Jay (Neil Maskell) and his wife Shel (MyAnna Buring) are former military, living in suburbia with their son. They argue constantly about everything, feeling tension from Jay somehow blowing an important mission in Kiev eight months earlier. Their friend Gal (Michael Smiley) and his new girlfriend Fiona come for dinner, and the film gets off to a slow start. There are a couple of flareups, some fights and reconciliations, but ultimately Gal convinces Jay to partner up with him on a job to assassinate people. They get the titular kill list, and that's when things start to get weird.
