Join Jason Jenkins for a Signing of the New Book ‘Phantom Limbs’ at Dark Delicacies on March 30th
Image
As we revealed back in January, Encyclopocalypse Publications will be bringing Jason Jenkins’ non-fiction horror book Phantom Limbs to print on April 2nd.

Bd has learned that Dark Delicacies will be hosting a signing of Phantom Limbs with Jenkins in attendance, along with a number of the creatives he interviewed for the various chapters in the book. To be held on Saturday, March 30th at 3pm, this event will feature Kevin Bocarde (the Chopping Mall remake), Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski (Hellraiser), Andrew Divoff (Wishmaster III: The Third Millenium), Michael January (Psycho II: The Return of Norman Bates), Alex Litvak (Predators: Clan War), Adam Marcus and Debra Sullivan (The Plantation), Scott Milam (Texas Chainsaw II), Nick Principe (Laid to Rest: Exhumed...

How the ‘Mother’s Day’ Remake Properly Updates a Low-Budget Troma Film from the 1980s
Image
No Troma remake should attempt to match Troma at its revolting, boundary-demolishing, trigger-happy game. Take 1980’s Mother’s Day, for example. Troma Entertainment ringleader Lloyd Kaufman let his brother Charles Kaufman shoot a rape-revenge exploitation sleazefest no mamma would applaud. Darren Lynn Bousman’s 2010 remake abandons Tromaville signatures almost entirely for a mean-mugging reinterpretation rooted in more straightforward thriller formulas because few indie studios are willing to push as far as Troma — especially in today’s acutely more socially attentive climate. You could get away with Mother’s Day (1980) in the 80s, especially with its cereal bowls filled with consumerism commentaries, but even today’s midnighter-loving moviegoer is looking for something more evolved.

Then again, Troma’s catalog might be the most fertile soil for remakes, given how even midrange studio pocket change would be a budgetary increase. Troma Studios has earned its legacy as an independent horror tentpole, but...

Saw 2 Director Wants a True Leprechaun Reboot with Warwick Davis
Darren Lynn Bousman at an event for Abattoir (2016)
This weekend marked another St. Patrick's Day, and to celebrate, writer-director Darren Lynn Bousman took to Twitter to let us all know that he still wants Lionsgate to hand him the keys to a semi-classic horror franchise: Leprechaun. Yeah, true story.

Evidently, Darren Lynn Bousman wants to bring back original franchise star Warwick Davis and send the little green guy back in time to the Colorado Gold Rush. Which sounds pretty awesome. Specifically, Bousman says this.

"It's that time of year again where I remind my good friends at @Lionsgate that I still want to reboot the Leprechaun movie (Again)... Lep gets in a time machine and goes back to the Colorado Gold Rush. You guys have my number, I'll be sitting by the phone."

Screenwriter Scott Milam, who worked with Bousman on his remake of Mother's Day, then tweeted this.

"We pitched Lionsgate, remember? I wanted to cast William Shatner...

‘Submerged’ DVD Review
Stars: Jonathan Bennett, Talulah Riley, Rosa Salazar, Samuel Hunt, Cody Christian, Giles Matthey, Denzel Whitaker, Willa Ford, Mario Van Peebles, Tim Daly | Written by Scott Milam | Directed by Steven C. Miller

Horror movies that trap a character or group of characters in one confined location can be quite effective in the right hands, and two of the best recent examples are Adam Green’s Frozen and Rodrigo Cortes’ Buried. It’s quite impressive to see what a filmmaker can do with such a limited set of resources, and both Green and Cortes pulled incredible amounts of suspense out of premises that seemed destined to sink. As for Steven C. Miller’s attempt to do the same, well, it just kind of sinks.

Written by Scott Milam and directed by Miller (Silent Night), Submerged centres on a group of young characters who are quite literally trapped in a limousine at the bottom of a canal.

Submerged Review
Submerged is a nifty little kitchen-sink thriller that crawls deep under your skin, much like a Pandora’s Box of phobias ripe for the prodding. Not only do a group of teens find themselves trapped inside a sealed limousine, but said vehicle is resting silently on the bottom of a deep canal. Oh, and hitmen wait above the water for their targets to eventually surface, because who doesn’t dig some batshit overkill? Scott Milam is a proper bastard for capturing all my recurring nightmares in one suffocating script, and Steven C. Miller earns the same pale-faced praise for bringing them to life in this air-tight terror. Yes – armed divers and all.

Everything begins underwater, but it’s not long before flashbacks offer background information and better times. Matt (Jonathan Bennett), who comes-to behind the limo’s wheel, reveals himself to be an ex-solider who serves as bodyguard for a wealthy businessman’s family.

Mother's Day (Remake) Review
By Marcey Papandrea, MoreHorror.com

Darren Lynn Bousman is one of the few names of modern horror that actually really excites me. If I see his name attached to something, I am automatically interested. The man brought us two pretty darn good Saw sequels (II and III) and a very unique and highly entertaining musical rock opera with Repo! I mean really, what’s not to like? The man is out there giving us fresh films for the genre, I admire that a lot and his adventure into the remake territory was an interesting move and one that worked!

Mother’s Day in my humble opinion of course is his best film, and one of the better horror remakes I’ve seen more recently. Mother’s Day is a remake of the classic Troma film, and trust me when I say it doesn’t take a lot to improve on trash.

Mother’s Day Review
Mother's Day Directed by: Darren Lynn Bousman Written by: Scott Milam Starring: Rebecca De Mornay, Jaime King, Frank Grillo, Deborah Ann Woll, Briana Evigan, Shawn Ashmore In honor of Mother’s Day, here’s my review of the aptly titled horror flick Mother’s Day. Looking for the perfect film to watch with mom this weekend? I assure you, this is not it. Well, unless your mom is like me, and seeks out any depraved movie she can get her hands on. In that case, Mother’s Day is perfect. It made its debut at Fantastic Fest 2010 in Austin, Texas, and there was plenty of buzz around it. With Darren Lynn Bousman (the Saw franchise, Repo! The Genetic Opera) at the helm, I was anxious to see this project. Unfortunately, I was unable to get into the midnight screening. The fact that I got to casually chat with Bousman before...

New Trailer for the Slasher Flick Mother’s Day

It’s only been two years, but let’s face it, if you wanted to see this movie, you would have found ways to see it by now. It’s been all over the genre festival circuits, but for those of you who have a fear of film festivals, Anchor Bay will finally release it in a limited capacity on May 4th in parts of New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, before shipping it off to DVD and Blu-ray May 8th where it will make most of its money. Or that’s the hope, anyway. Directed by Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II, III and IV) with screen story and screenplay by Scott Milam based on the original Mother’S Day written by Charles Kaufman and Warren Leight,...
