Over the last decade, there have been so many great horror comedies for genre fans to sink their bloody teeth into. However, where the slasher sub-genre is concerned, there’s arguably no modern gem as beloved as Happy Death Day. The 2017 Christopher Landon film quickly became a hit for Blumhouse, and a third time loop nightmare is finally on the way. Now, ahead of the long-awaited sequel,Happy Death Day has reset the clock with a new poster.
In a partnership between Blumhouse and Mutant, the killer new poster has been designed by Matt Ryan Robin. The print sees Tree Gelbman (Jessica Rothe) falling into a red void over and over again as she fails to get out of her birthday time loop predicament. Knives and birthday candles surround her, but the dreaded Babyface Killer is waiting for her at the bottom to start the torturous process all over again.

Netflix has pulled the plug on several popular series in 2025, leaving some viewers disappointed. From gripping mysteries to spy thrillers and even hit sports documentaries, the streamer has pulled the plug on multiple fan-favorite shows. Even critically praised shows weren’t safe if the viewership didn’t hit the mark fast enough. While multiple Netflix shows are gearing up for their season finale in 2025, there are a few shows that are silently getting cancelled by Netflix due to low viewership.
Whether the stories wrapped up clearly or have an open ending, fans are left with lingering questions and an empty watchlist. We’ve broken down how it ended and why Netflix decided to cancel it. Here’s a closer look at the popular Netflix shows cancelled in 2025.

Blumhouse and Mutant have teamed up to release a Happy Death Day poster by Matt Ryan Tobin.
Limited to 50, the 24×36 full-color lithograph print on high-quality gloss paper is available for $45.
This marks Blumhouse and Mutant’s second art collaboration, following Phantom City Creative’s recent M3GAN 2.0 poster.
Happy Death Day is directed by Christopher Landon (Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones) and written by Scott Lobdell (Critters Attack). Jessica Rothe, Israel Broussard, and Ruby Modine star.
In the 2017 film, a blissfully self-centered co-ed is doomed to relive the day of her murder… unless she can identify her masked assailant and hopefully stop the madness. If she can’t, she will be stuck in an insane loop, reliving the ghoulish nightmare that has become her death day.
A third installment in the slasher franchise is in the works.

When producer Jeremy Bolt read an article about the prehistoric bold snake Titanoboa, the largest snake ever known to have existed, living some 60 million years ago, he thought it would make for a good story.

Many medical dramas have attempted to replicate the success of Grey's Anatomy and ER. Many have failed, not coming nearly as close to the popularity that both series reached (with Grey's Anatomy still being renewed for more seasons to this day). They've set the standard, one that's tough to achieve and consists of a combination of great acting, excellent storytelling, and a loyal audience. This year, several medical dramas had close premieres, each vying for the attention of lovers of the genre. While Max's The Pitt has been the most popular, Fox's Doc, NBC's Brilliant Minds, and CBS' Watson have all snagged renewals, too. Netflix's Pulse, on the other hand, has received mixed reviews since its premiere on the streamer on April 3, 2025, and its fate has now been sealed.
According to Deadline, Pulse won't get another chance to prove critics wrong as the Netflix original has been cancelled after one season.

Netflix has canceled a pair of first-year series, The Residence and Pulse.
The two shows both premiered in the spring and had four-week runs in Netflix’s internal, worldwide top 10 rankings, with The Residence lasting a bit longer than than in Nielsen’s U.S. streaming charts. As usual, Netflix does cost-benefit analysis in making renewal or cancellation decisions.
The Residence is a White House-set murder mystery starring Uzo Aduba as Cordelia Cupp, the “greatest detective in the world.” The series hails from Shonda Rhimes’ Shondaland and creator/showrunner Paul William Davies (Scandal). Had the series gone forward, the plan was for it to become an anthology with Cupp taking on a new case each season.
The cast for the first (and now only) season also features Randall Park, Giancarlo Esposito, Susan Kelechi Watson, Edwina Findley, Bronson Pinchot, Mary Wiseman, Julieth Restrepo, Al Mitchell, Mel Rodriguez, Ken Marino, Jason Lee and Jane Curtin,...

Freshman Netflix shows “Pulse” and “The Residence” have both been canceled, Variety has learned. Both series aired just one season at the streamer.
“Pulse” premiered on April 3 and debuted with 6.5 million views on the Netflix Top 10, followed by 8.5 million, 3.2 million and 2 million views in the weeks after that. The series received a ratings of 48% on Rotten Tomatoes, with Variety’s review noting “a poorly formatted narrative, an appalling depiction of sexual harassment and a few insufferable characters [that] don’t exactly make for a pleasurable watch.”
The series also suffered due to the proximity of its premiere to the finale of “The Pitt” at Max, with the latter medical drama scoring much higher with critics and audiences alike.
“Pulse” starred Willa Fitzgerald as Dr. Danny Simms, a third-year resident at a Level 1 trauma center Miami, who is unexpectedly promoted after beloved chief resident Xander Phillips (Colin Woodell) is suspended. Per the official logline,...

For a decade and a half, Blumhouse has been the industry standard for consistent horror success at the box office, yielding high concept, low-budget hits every year and spawning multiple franchises in the process.
But for the past 18 months, the studio has suffered its first extended slump, and the sequel that was supposed to get things back on track, “M3GAN 2.0,” has instead suffered a poor $10.2 million domestic/$17.1 million global opening weekend.
“I look at this opening weekend, and it’s hard to think of a more disappointing or shocking launch this year,” said Boxoffice’s SVP of content strategy Daniel Loria. “There have been bigger bombs like ‘Snow White,’ but we knew that film had problems. Even if a lower opening than the first ‘M3GAN’ was expected, because tracking was at $18-20 million, I don’t think anyone was expecting a start that’s lower than ‘Night Swim.’”

The last decade has been an amazing time to be a horror fan. There's a ton of new franchises for moviegoers to sink their bloody teeth into. This has included horror comedies like Christopher Landon’s Happy Death Day, brutal unrated slashers like Damien Leone’s Terrifier, and gruesome adaptations like Scott Derrickson’s The Black Phone. All three of these films are gearing up for scream-worthy sequels. Now, while we wait to shiver again at the movies, Neca is giving these franchises new killer figures.
A part of Neca’s popular Toony Terrors line, there are three new figures in their latest Saturday morning cartoon-inspired wave. There's Art the Clown (Terrifier), The Grabber (The Black Phone) and The Babyface Killer (Happy Death Day). All three of these six-inch figures will come with accessories. Well, it looks like we’re not done sipping wine and unraveling secrets by the river just yet. Yep, Netflix’s Virgin River is officially coming back for season 7, and we can’t keep calm. Our beloved small-town drama, filled with mysterious family trees, love triangles, and emotional cliffhangers, is about to break the network’s records as the longest-running English-language drama on the platform.
Based on Robyn Carr’s addictive novels, Virgin River has delivered everything- from medical emergencies to romantic rollercoasters, and now? Well, it is all set to stir the plot again. In Season 6, Mel and Jack finally said ‘I do’, but showrunner Patrick Sean Smith teased that we’ve only scratched the surface of their story. Shocking, right?

We might be heading back to the past in Virgin River season 7, according to the latest post from season 6 guest star Callum Kerr. In the post, the actor seemed to hint that he could be coming back to the series for another guest appearance, but his tease also has us wondering if Netflix has finally made a decision about that long in-development prequel series.
Earlier this week, Kerr posted a photo of himself standing in front of a black background with Virgin River and Netflix written on it multiple times. He's all smiles, which seems to mirror the sentiment of his caption: "We running this back?" To further solidify the fact that he's teasing fans about his potential return, Kerr used the smirking emoji before tagging both the show and the streamer.

Editor’s Note: This review was originally published during the 2024 Locarno Film Festival. “Invention” plays at the Metrograph in New York starting Friday, April 18.
When it comes to meta experiments that blur those good ole lines between fiction and the filmmakers’ own non-fiction life stories, there’s a risk that the resulting feature can border on being impenetrable if audiences aren’t fed a load of exposition in advance. That’s far less of an issue for classically-told narratives from mega-famous artists delving into (semi)autobiography (like Steven Spielberg with “The Fabelmans”), but definitely so for smaller scale projects from independent filmmakers whose output is more peculiar. What can be a compelling behind-the-scenes story as described in a press kit may not necessarily translate into the finished feature as something engaging, or even coherent, to anyone coming to the work without the luxury of reading production notes before the screening.

Director Christopher Landon returns with high-concept suspense thriller Drop, which cleverly combines the anxiety of a first date with the type of unseen assailant threat familiar from films like Phone Booth, Grand Piano and the more recent Carry On. As such, it’s hugely enjoyable, and the sort of movie where the ridiculous contrivance is a big part of the fun.
After a tense prologue, which isn’t explained until later and could either be a flashback or a flash-forward, Drop opens with single mother Violet nervously preparing for a first date, encouraged by her younger sister Jen (Violett Beane), who will be babysitting Violet’s 5 year-old son Toby (Jacob Robinson) for the evening. Some of the most memorable horror comedy films are boosted by their epic titles, from Bodies Bodies Bodies to Happy Death Day. Speaking of the latter, ever since Happy Death Day 2U dropped in 2019, fans of the franchise have been itching for a threequel. Filmmaker Christopher Landon directed the first two and recently offered MovieWeb additional promising updates on Happy Death Day 3 following his recent announcement that it's moving forward. We caught up with Landon in Los Angeles while he was promoting his new Blumhouse thriller Drop, now playing in theaters.
"We are definitely talking about Happy Death Day 3," Landon told MovieWeb. "I've had the idea for a long time. I've talked about it a lot with [lead actress] Jessica Rothe, and so we're finally restarting that whole conversation right now. So we're hopeful." “Happy Death Day” director Christopher Landon is opening up about exiting “Scream 7.” The director officially announced his departure from the horror sequel in December 2023, about a month after Melissa Barerra was fired from the movie due to social media posts she wrote about Israel and Palestine. Jenna Ortega’s exit from “Scream 7” was announced the day after Barerra’s firing.

After four days of watching Netflix's new medical drama series, critics and viewers have a prognosis, and it's not looking good. Pulse had a lukewarm debut on Thursday, April 3, when the entire season dropped on Netflix. "The biggest issue with Netflix's Pulse is its lack of identity," said Collider's Isabella Soares in her review. A new score on Rotten Tomatoes reveals that it's on the decline, currently sitting at a 47% critic score and 46% audience score. Some things are rare on the review aggregator, including an almost identical critic and audience score. Typically, each party sees things differently, but with Pulse, there is a shared one. The show had been likened to Grey's Anatomy before it premiered, but they couldn't be different, with Grey's Anatomy's score double that of Pulse.
Hailing from Zoe Robyn and Carlton Cuse, Pulse shows what happens when Miami's busiest Level 1 hospital faces a natural disaster.

Happy Death Day (watch it Here) and Happy Death Day 2U (watch that one Here) director Christopher Landon let it be known as soon as Happy Death Day 2U was released that he had plans for a Happy Death Day 3 (which would be called Happy Death Day to Us). But while Happy Death Day had earned a sequel by making over $125 million at the global box office on a budget that was just under $5 million, the third film hasn’t happened because Happy Death Day 2U only made $64 million. That’s pretty good for a movie that cost $9 million… but distributor Universal Pictures was apparently hesitant to make a follow-up to movie that made so much less than its predecessor. That’s why six years have gone by without the third film going into production – but now, Happy Death Day 3 is reportedly finally moving forward!

The long-awaited third film in the Happy Death Day series finally got a positive update six years after Happy Death Day 2U hit theaters. Debuting in 2017, Happy Death Day was a horror-comedy spin on the Groundhog Day time loop storyline that saw Tree Gelbman (Jessica Rothe) reliving her birthday every time a mysterious masked assailant kills her. The sequel, Happy Death Day 2U, opened in theaters in February 2019, and fans have been waiting for a new third film for the past six years.

“The third movie is moving forward,” Rothe announced on stage with Landon, as reported by Bloody Disgusting.
Rothe stars in the franchise as Tree, a college student who has a nasty habit of getting stuck in a time loop with a serial killer. The time loop restarts when Tree dies, usually in increasingly gruesome ways.

Plans to make Happy Death Day a trilogy have been in the works for years. At a recent double feature event screening the first movie and its sequel, director Christopher Landon and star Jessica Rothe revealed that Happy Death Day 3 is "moving forward" during a recent double-feature screening at the American Cinematheque. Watch the clip here.
The 2017 movie Happy Death Day is a black comedy slasher about a college student named Tree Gelbman (Rothe) who has the worst birthday ever. After being brutally murdered, Tree gets trapped in a time loop, forced to repeat the day over and over again until she can find the culprit and prevent her death from happening. The 2019 sequel took a turn into science fiction territory, placing Tree in yet another time loop, this time in a parallel universe.

Just one week after yet another non-update on the status of Happy Death Day 3, franchise star Jessica Rothe announced at a double feature screening of the first two movies that the long-awaited third installment in the horror-comedy franchise is now “moving forward”!
“The third movie is moving forward,” Jessica Rothe said on stage at the American Cinematheque last night, with Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon by her side.
Landon himself added, “It is moving forward.”
It’s been six years since the release of Happy Death Day 2U, with fans spending these past six years wondering why the financially successful franchise hasn’t yet made its return. Landon recently revealed that Universal and Blumhouse at one point considered doing a third installment as a three-part miniseries for Peacock, which of course didn’t end up happening.

The new medical drama series from Netflix has been teased as having some resemblance to the early years of Grey's Anatomy. While this made for some promising hype, the show has been met with a disappointing Rotten Tomatoes score — and the audiences agree.
Currently, Netflix's Pulse has an approval rating from critics of 47%. The rating is equally matched by the audience score on the Popcornmeter, which is tied at 47%. It's clear that the show is polarizing, and while it's been getting some praise, there are enough reviews to firmly make the series considered "rotten" by the review aggregator website. Some critics have verified that the series is reminiscent of Grey's Anatomy, and while THR critic Angie Han felt that the show wasn't perfect, it shows a lot of promise, resulting in a positive review.
"[Resembles Grey's Anatomy] with its mix of medical drama and soap operatics," Han wrote in a review.

This post contains spoilers from Netflix's Pulse episode 7 from this point forward.
Picking up after a cathartic but traumatic episode for Danny, Pulse episode 7 begins with her attempting to smooth things over with Harper. Their father is back home and doing better, but Harper's not open to talking to her sister just yet. Trying to maintain a generous spirit, Danny gives Elijah his pick of two traumas coming to the hospital. It's crunch time for them since the academic year has ended and Cruz will be making her choice for next year's chief resident soon. She's keeping a close watch on them.
Elijah cares for a patient suffering from an alligator attack to his face. He's bloodied and in a lot of pain. When Cole arrives to help prep for surgery, he undercuts and overrides a decision Elijah made right in front of Cruz. Meanwhile, Danny cares for a...

For over 20 years, Grey's Anatomy has dominated as the most popular medical drama and one of the most popular drama shows ever. As a result, any new medical drama is benchmarked against it. Shows in this category are seeing a resurgence as streaming platforms develop their takes on it, and for Netlflix, that comes in the form of Pulse. Set in Miami's business Level 1 Trauma Center, the show explores the challenges of the medical field amid workplace drama. Even if the creators don't want that, Pulse has been compared to Grey's Anatomy. However, the show has not received as much acclaim from critics or the audience. On the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, Pulse Season 1 has earned a measly 53% critic score. The audience side is not better at just 54% percent. The show has brought critics and viewers together, who normally don't see things from the same perspective. In contrast, Grey's Anatomy...

Twenty years ago, “Grey’s Anatomy” opened with the premise: What if a pretty surgical intern hooked up with her hot neuro attending and romance ensued? “Pulse,” a new medical drama created by Zoe Robyn, attempts a twist on this premise: What if a resident hooked up with her chief … and then she accused him of sexual harassment?
It’s a compelling spin on a problematic trope (work romance between people with a significant gap in power dynamic), but does it work? The answer is: Sort of.
Created by Zoe Robyn with Carlton Cuse as co-showrunner, Netflix’s “Pulse” drops us in the midst of two separate storms. One is the very literal Hurricane Abby, which is about to hit Miami’s fictional Maguire Medical Center. The other is the revelation that Maguire’s chief resident Dr. Xander Phillips (Colin Woodell) is being investigated over the harassment claims made by his underling,...

This post contains spoilers from Netflix's Pulse episode 2 from this point forward.
Hurricane Abby continues to intensify as two paramedics, Nia and her partner, take the last call of the night. Pulse episode 2 opens with them stumbling upon a woman asking for their help. A tree fell on her house with her children still inside. They rush to her aid in spite of the great dangers.
Danny and Xander begin working together again, and it's inevitably awkward. But she wasn't going to make a fuss with Dr. Cruz and risk patients' lives during a hurricane to make her shift more comfortable. She's finding it difficult for others to respect her authority and decision making. They're still looking to Xander for his approval.
The hospital staff gossips about Danny and Xander, and they come to an agreement that Xander isn't a "perv" and Danny isn't a "liar," as they say.

The new Netflix medical drama Pulse, starring Reacher’s Willa Fitzgerald, is insanely addictive. This medical drama is soapy but not in the classic prime-time soap opera style, like Grey’s Anatomy. The show, created by Carlton Cuse, has the perfect blend of personal storylines while incorporating fast-paced, high-stakes medical drama reminiscent of NBC’s classic ER.
However, the series does miss some deeper emotional moments when it comes to their professional jobs. For instance, there isn’t an ER episode like “Love’s Labor Lost.” Yet, Pulse excels in melodramatic storytelling, focusing on how personal relationships affect professional lives. I’m not sure the series will have Doug Ross and Carol Hathaway’s all-encompassing romance, but this series has a beat on classic entries.

There's a new creature feature to keep an eye on, and no, it's not the upcoming Anaconda reboot. However, that one should definitely be on your radar too! It's another giant snake horror movie called Titan, and Lionsgate has just obtained the rights to distribute the film in the United States.
We first learned of this movie back in February 2024. Resident Evil producers Constantin Film and Jb Pictures were revealed to be behind the project with Mike P. Nelson as director. Nelson had also signed on to co-write the script with Alan B. McElroy. We later learned that Tony Giglio (Doom: Annihilation) would also be helping write the script. In addition, Robert Kulzer of Constantin Film and Jeremy Bolt of Jb Pictures serve as producers. Executive producers include Sam Hall and Michael Rothstein for north.five.six.
Talented actresses Kiana Madeira and Jessica Rothe lead the cast. Both are modern scream queens.

About seven years ago, author Laura van den Berg wrote a short story called Your Second Wife, which was published by Lenny Letter (and you can still read it online at This Link). That story recently came to the attention of Jessica Rothe, star of the Happy Death Day films – and now, Deadline reports that Rothe is producing an erotic thriller series adaptation of Your Second Wife for the Max streaming service!
Created by Your Friends & Neighbors writer/executive producer Jamie Rosengard, the Your Second Wife series will follow Liana Dunn, an aspiring actress-turned-high school theater teacher trapped in stasis on Long Island. Struggling to move on from the death of her sister, Liana cultivates an unconventional double life that proves too intoxicating for her to give up … even when it places her life in imminent danger. Rosengard serves as showrunner.

It’s time for our annual non-update on the fate of Happy Death Day 3, which fans of the successful slasher-comedy franchise have been demanding for the last six years. We’ve been talking about a potential Happy Death Day 3 for each of those last six years, with the ball in producer Jason Blum’s court. Unfortunately, he still doesn’t seem to want to play with it.
Speaking with SFX Magazine for the latest issue, Happy Death Day creator/director Christopher Landon reveals that while Happy Death Day 3 almost took a very interesting approach to making its way into our lives, the project has completely stalled at this point.
“I didn’t write the script because I never want to count my chickens and get ahead of myself. But I was ready to go and start writing this, but then it was sort of like, it was weird,” Landon explains.

It sounds like Happy Death Day 3might be dead, at least according to the film's director. Christopher Landon has emerged as an exciting voice in horror-comedies thanks to his work on films like Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse, Freaky, and the double bill of Happy Death Day and Happy Death Day 2U. Both Happy Death Day films got positive reviews from critics, and fans have been largely awaiting the news of a third entry. Unfortunately, they might want to keep their expectations in check, though, according to Landon.
Speaking with SFX Magazine via GamesRadar, Landon said he had not heard anything from Universal or Blumhouse about Happy Death Day 3. He did say at one point that the studio was considering making the third entry in the franchise a miniseries that would air on Peacock, similar to The Continental: From the Word of John Wick. The Happy Death Day franchise has carved a unique niche of fans, blending horror and helpless cathartic comedy. Created by Drop director Christopher Landon, this horror-comedy keeps the audience in a time loop, reminding them of films like Groundhog Day and Edge of Tomorrow. The film revolves around the protagonist, Tree Gelbman (Jessica Rothe), who received critical acclaim for her role.

Happy Death Day to you, Happy Death Day to you…The Happy Death Day series has been surprisingly well received based on just the first two entries, pulling off the task of essentially putting Groundhog Day in the slasher genre (without a killer groundhog…). Goofy, high-concept horror efforts succeed or fail based on more than just the talent involved or their dedication to the bit. Christopher Landon, as evidenced by genre mashups like Happy Death Day, Freaky, and Heart Eyes, understands that when the stakes are sky high, the emotions need to be firmly grounded. This is especially apropos for Drop, a high-rise-set, single-location thriller that delivers its shocks liberally mixed with the easy humor and unpretentious emotionality that’s become the filmmaker’s stock in trade.
Violet (Meghann Fahy) is a thirtysomething widow and single mom still haunted by the violent death of her abusive husband. Between working as a therapist for women in similar situations and providing for her young son, Toby (Jacob Robinson), she has little time for romance. Netflix has debuted the trailer for the upcoming hospital drama series ‘Pulse.’
As a hurricane barrels towards Miami’s busiest Level 1 Trauma Center, third-year resident Dr. Danny Simms (Willa Fitzgerald) is unexpectedly thrust into a promotion when beloved Chief Resident Dr. Xander Phillips (Colin Woodell) is suspended.
Amid the worsening storm and an onslaught of trauma cases, the hospital goes into lockdown. Danny and Phillips must find a way to work together – even as the bombshell details of a complicated and illicit romance between them spill out. The rest of the ER is left to process the fallout of their relationship while balancing their own challenges, both personal and professional, as they work under the pressure of life-or-death stakes. For this tight-knit group of doctors, saving their patient’s lives is often less complicated than living their own.
Created by Zoe Robyn, the cast includes Willia Fitzgerald, Colin Woodell, Justina Machado,...

Netflix's upcoming new medical drama Pulse is certainly giving off Grey's Anatomy vibes if you ask me. Right down to the central relationship too. But, that doesn't mean I'm not going to watch it! I'm actually really looking forward to the upcoming series. And I think you fellow medical drama fan s will be excited about it too.
Pulse premieres Tuesday, April 3, 2025 on Netflix. There's a total of 10 episodes to look forward to. You might think that something as intense as a medical drama might be too much as a binge. Though with Grey's Anatomy doing so well streaming on Netflix, it's clear there's an audience for it. And I think that's why the streamer is clearly trying its hand at its own version. I'm definitely willing to give it a chance.
I can already tell based on the newly released trailer that I'll also be shipping Danny Simms and Xander Phillips.

Netflix’s first foray into English language medical dramas, “Pulse,” does not skip a beat in its first trailer.
Two medical attendants get caught kissing by a nurse, a hurricane forces the whole hospital to step up and, of course, a patient’s life is saved.
As a hurricane barrels towards Miami’s busiest Level 1 Trauma Center, third-year resident Dr. Danny Simms (Willa Fitzgerald) is unexpectedly promoted when chief resident Dr. Xander Phillips (Colin Woodell), the man she’s developing feelings for, is suspended.
When cases start to pile up in the middle of the storm, Danny and Phillips must put their flirtation aside and focus on their patients under the pressure of life-or-death stakes. Watch the full trailer, here:
