Wildcard and Altitude have launched the official trailer for ‘Christy’ – the debut feature from Cork director Brendan Canty.

Developed with BBC Film and Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland, the film is a heartwarming story of second chances, connection, and finding your place in the world.

17-year-old Christy is at a crossroads. Kicked out of his suburban foster home, he moves in with his estranged older brother Shane and his young family. As far as Shane is concerned, this is a temporary arrangement, but Christy begins to feel at home on Cork's working-class Northside. As he makes friends and begins to let the community in, he also reconnects with his past through his seemingly more corrupting extended family, despite Shane’s efforts to protect him. Brendan Canty’s feature debut, Christy, premiered in Berlinale’s Generation 14plus strand—a fitting launchpad for a film that feels both intimate and elemental. Here, 17‑year‑old Christy (Danny Power) is unceremoniously expelled from Ireland’s care system and sent to live with his half‑brother, Shane (Diarmuid Noyes), in Cork’s rain‑slicked Knocknaheeny district. No sweeping exposition: the premise (a boy forced home just weeks before his eighteenth birthday) is stark, almost brutal in its simplicity.

Tonally, Christy occupies that liminal space between social‑realism and quiet lyricism. Brendan Canty, formerly of Hozier’s “Take Me to Church” music video fame, brings a visually restrained palette—muted blues and grays give way to tentative warmth as Christy unfolds.

What sets this apart from the glut of urban‑drama fare is its locus: Cork, not Dublin. The vernacular “boy” punctuates every sentence, anchoring us in a community both tight‑knit and weather‑beaten.

Charades has locked in a slew of European deals, including Pyramide in France, for Irish filmmaker Brendan Canty’s Christy, following its world premiere opening the Generation 14plus competition at the Berlinale.

Futher deals include Lumiere Publishing (Benelux), Transilvania (Romania), Angel Films (Scandinavia), Weirdwave (Greece) and airlines (Aardwolf).

As previously announced, Altitude and Wildcard will be releasing in cinemas in the UK-Ireland later this year.

Charades has acquired international sales rights to Irish filmmakerBrendan Canty’sChristy, which receives its world premiere opening the Generation 14plus competition at Berlinale 2025.

Altitude and Wildcard will release the film in UK and Irish cinemas respectively later this year.

Christy is based on Canty’s short film of the same name and follows a 17-year-oldafter he’s thrown out of his suburban foster home and moves in with his estranged older half-brother in Cork.

Canty’s previous work as director includes short film For You starring Barry Keoghan and the music video for Hozier’s Take Me To Church.

Cillian Murphy obtained one of acting’s most coveted achievements when he won an Oscar for his leading role in “Oppenheimer.” But his award season run for the acclaimed Christopher Nolan film didn’t end with his big night at the Dolby Theater. The Irish actor went on to receive his home country’s highest acting honor on Sunday at the Irish Film and TV Academy Awards when he won the Lead Actor — Film category for “Oppenheimer.”

The ceremony honored the best Irish film and television of 2023, with Pat Collins’ “That They May Face the Rising Sun” winning Best Film. Other notable winners included Paul Mescal taking Supporting Actor for “All of Us Strangers” and Alison Oliver winning Supporting Actress for “Saltburn.”

The 21st Irish Film & Television Academy (IFTA) Awards, which highlight Irish filmmakers, television creators and performers, saw Pat Collins’ That They May Face The Rising Sun win Best Film in an upset. Despite earning a second-best 11 nominations, the top award was its only win.

Lies We Tell all with three wins: for Director Lisa Mulcahy, Lead Actress Agnes O’Casey, and Best Script. It came in with 13nominations.

Oscar-winner Cillian Murphy repeated his Best Actor win at the Academy Awards for Oppenheimer with a win for Lead Actor. In the supporting categories, Paul Mescal won for All of Us Strangers and Alison Oliver topped all for Saltburn.

Oppenheimer was named Best International Film, Emma Stone was Best Actress, and Paul Giamatti won International Actor for The Holdovers.

In the television drama categories, Kin was the winner for series, directing, script, lead actress Clare Dune, and supporting actress Maria Doyle Kennedy.

Fresh from his Academy Award win for best actor, “Oppenheimer” star Cillian Murphy now has a chance to claim the same honor at his local awards.

The Irish Film and TV Academy (IFTA) has unveiled the nominees for its 2024 awards, with Murphy going up against “Saltburn’s'” Barry Keoghan and “All of Us Strangers” star Andrew Scott in the best actor category. Elsewhere, Jessie Buckley (“Fingernails”) and Saoirse Ronan (“Foe”) are among those nominated for best actress, while Paul Mescal (“All of Us Strangers”) and Kenneth Branagh (“Oppenheimer”) are in the running for best supporting actor.

But it was actually Irish features leading the pack of nominees, with Lisa Mulcahy’s “Lies We Tell” landing 13, followed by “That They May Face the Rising Sun” and “Double Blind.”

The IFTAs ceremony will be take place on April 20 at the Dublin Royal Convention Centre with Irish TV personality Baz Ashmawy on hosting duties.

Nominations are out for the 21st Irish Film & Television Awards with Lisa Mulcahy’s thriller Lies We Tell leading the pack on the feature side at 13, and crime drama Kin heading up the TV fields with 11 (scroll down for the ful list of nominees). The Irish Film & Television Academy (IFTA) will hand out its prizes on April 20 in Dublin.

Alongside Lies We Tell in the Best Film category are Double Blind, Flora and Son, Lola, That They May Face the Rising Sun and Verdigris. Each of those films also scored a mention for their directors.

In what was a banner year for Irish talent, there are several awards season notables vying for Best Actor as well, including Oppenheimer Oscar winner Cillian Murphy, Saltburn’s Barry Keoghan and All of Us Strangers’ Andrew Scott.

The Best International Film race includes All of Us Strangers, Oppenheimer, Past Lives, Poor Things, Saltburn and The Holdovers.

Double Blind is a thrilling single-location film with a diverse cast and a tight script about an experimental drug trial gone wrong. Pollyanna McIntosh was intrigued by the movie's single-location storytelling and the compassionate nature of her character, Dr. Burke. McIntosh is also excited about her Walking Dead return in The Ones Who Live, and is hopeful for a future beyond the upcoming spinoff.

Epic Pictures has revealed the trailer for an indie horror film titled Double Blind, which is a reference to the drug test study concept of even keeping the researchers in the dark. This first premiered at last year's Neuchâtel Fantastic Film Fest, then it also stopped by the FilmQuest Fest in the US. After an experimental drug trial goes awry, the test subjects face a terrifying side effect: if you fall asleep you die. Trapped in an isolated facility, panic ensues as they try to escape and somehow stay awake. Fighting off sleep, and each other, to stay alive. Starring Millie Brady, Pollyanna McIntosh, Kate Ashfield, Diarmuid Noyes, Akshay Kumar, and Brenock O'Connor. Set for release in February if anyone is interested in finding out who makes it out alive... This looks intense, not sure why they're attacking each other.

Exclusive: Millie Brady and Pollyanna McIntosh are leading the cast of Double Blind, an Irish horror-thriller being produced by Los Angeles-based Epic Pictures Group.

The project is written by Darach McGarrigle and marks the feature directorial debut for Ian Hunt-Duffy who, along with producer Simon Doyle, runs the Dublin-based production company Failsafe Films.

It follows seven strangers taking part in a paid drug trial who become trapped in the lab after the side effects of the study escalate the situation into a nightmarish scenario- if they fall asleep, they die. Brenock O’Connor (Game of Thrones), Abby Fitz (The Cellar), Shonagh Marie, Diarmuid Noyes, Frank Blake, and Akshay Kumar round out the cast.

The film is now shooting in Ireland. Epic will launch sales at the upcoming Cannes Marche du Film.

Acorn TV and Viacom’s Channel 5 have come on board psychological crime thriller Blood starring Line of Duty’s Adrian Dunbar.

The Svod service has taken U.S. rights and the British linear broadcaster has picked up UK rights to the six-part series, which was originally commissioned by Ireland’s Virgin Media Television. The deal was struck with All3Media International.

The drama follows Cat Hogan, played by Unforgotten’s Carolina Main, an isolated woman on the run from her past, a past she is forced to confront when the sudden ‘accidental’ death of her mother, Mary, played by 7 Days in Entebbe’s Ingrid Craigie, draws her back to the family she has spent the last ten years trying to avoid.
