Shocking revelations come to light in Netflix's ‘American Manhunt: Oj Simpson’
Image
Where were you during the Oj Simpson car chase in Los Angeles? The Oj Simpson criminal trial was considered the tragedy of the century during the mid-1990s. American Manhunt: Oj Simpson goes back to the days of Oj Simpson, who was tried for the murder of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her boyfriend, Ronald Goldman.

Simpson built a persona over the years since the start of his football career at USC. He was later drafted by the Buffalo Bills and then played for the San Francisco 49ers before he moved into a career in acting and broadcasting.

He thrived in his charm and character, which had caught the attention of so many people around the world. The car chase and the trial were the highest in TV ratings at the time when his controversies took notice from the public.

Menendez Brothers’ Possible Release Delayed Past Thanksgiving as Gov. Newsom Punts Clemency Decision
Image
California Gov. Gavin Newsom has decided to allow the incoming Los Angeles district attorney to weigh in on the clemency requests for Erik and Lyle Menendez, further delaying the potential release of the brothers who shot their parents dead and were tried in the 1990s and have been serving life in prison.

On Monday, Newsom announced the decision to allow incoming D.A. Nathan Hochman, a former federal prosecutor, time to look at the clemency case that has captured major public attention following the success of Netflix’s Monsters: The Erik and Lyle Menendez Story amid a TikTok movement that renewed interest in the decades-old case. The Ryan Murphy-produced series brought a tsunami of controversy over some decisions about the writing and dramatic elements included in the show, particularly with its depiction of the brothers’ relationship. But it also surged interest around the push to resentence Erik and Lyle Menendez,...

Former Menendez Documentarian Nancy Saslow On Latest Obsession Into The Murders: “I Don’t Think Any Of It Is New” But “None Of It Is Bad”
Image
Seven years before Netflix got into the Erik and Lyle Menendez business with Monsters and now its new docuseries that dropped Oct. 7, Hollywood was practically obsessed with the 1989 murders of Jose and Kitty Menéndez.

First there was the ABC documentary Truth and Lies: The Menendez Brothers – American Sons, American Murderers, followed by the Dick Wolf-produced Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders for and the telefilm Menendez: Blood Brothers for Lifetime. There was even an episode of Hln’s How it Really Happened With Hill Harper that featured a telephone interview with Lyle Menendez from prison with Chris Cuomo.

And then, there was A&e’s The Menendez Murders: Erik Tells All, a 2017 five-parter in which documentarian/EP Nancy Saslow interviewed the younger brother via telephone from the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego. Besides the hours of audio with Erik Menendez — Saslow could only conduct...

‘Monsters’ on Netflix: Yes, Erik Menendez Did Know Oj Simpson
Image
Though it may feel like a McU-level cameo of headline-grabbing names from the ’90s, one of the most surprising claims of “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” is true. Erik Menendez did actually know O.J. Simpson, at least for a brief time.

Their meeting happened in June of 1994, shortly after Simpson was arrested following his infamous Bronco chase. By that point, both brothers had been imprisoned for over four years.

Here’s everything we know about this stranger-than-fiction meeting and how “Monsters” retelling of it compares to other times Simpson has appeared in Ryan Murphy’s work.

Did the Menendez brothers know O.J. Simpson?

Just like in the Netflix series, Erik Menendez really was cell neighbors with O.J. Simpson. In Robert Rand’s “The Menendez Murders,” Erik said that he didn’t see Simpson cry during his first night but that he could hear him “moaning.” The...

Monsters 2: Did A Real-Life Jury Member Get A Heart Attack During Menendez’s Second Trial?
Image
The Menendez brothers’ disastrous first trial turned the justice department of LA County into a laughing stock. Over the course of the decade, the Da’s office had had a number of humiliating high-profile defeats one after another, the most embarrassing one being the O.J. Simpson case. That was one of the reasons why Gil Garcetti, the former Da of LA county, refused to accept the brothers’ plea bargain. On live television, Garcetti told the media and the public that the boys were accused of first-degree murder, and he would make sure that they served the sentence they deserved. A year later, in 1995, a retrial was arranged with Judge Stanley Weisberg presiding over the case. Ironically, he was the same judge who’d presided over the previous trial, which only makes you wonder if the judge was even impartial or was carrying out an image-cleansing agenda.

In order to avoid...

The Menendez Brothers Are Behind True Crime’s Strangest Coincidence
Image
As distasteful as it might feel to admit, infamous killers often receive multiple lives in pop culture. This is particularly true in the streaming era, where a need for countless hours of programming can lead streamers to mine true crime stories from the past to enthrall and disturb new generations of viewers.

That’s how 1970s serial killer and cannibal Jeffrey Dahmer came to be one of 2022’s most unsavory “stars.” Ryan Murphy’s tortuously titled Netflix series Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story dramatized Dahmer’s gruesome crimes for a whole new audience. Now, thanks to the announcement of Netflix and Murphy’s “Monster” followup, we have a pretty good idea what true crime event could next captivate the streaming world.

On May 3, Netflix announced that the next installment of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s “Monster” franchise would actually be subtitled “Monsters” and feature two killers rather than one.

Oj Simpson’s Robbery Sentence Too Harsh, Says Da in Murder Case
Gil Garcetti
Gil Garcetti, the prosecutor whose office failed to win a double murderer conviction against Oj Simpson, says Simpson’s current 33-year-sentence for armed robbery is too long. Garcetti, who says Simpson’s acquittal in 1995 cost him his dream job as Los Angeles County District Attorney, believes a Nevada court sentenced him too harshly in 2007 as “payback” for getting acquitted in the deaths of Ron Goldman and Simpson’s ex, Nicole Brown Simpson. “Our job is to seek justice,” Garcetti told TheWrap. “Justice was not served when Oj Simpson was acquitted. But in my mind, justice was not served either when he was.

Jay-Z in Made in America (2013)
Espn's O.J. Simpson documentary is even better than FX's 'The People v. O.J.'
Jay-Z in Made in America (2013)
The TV event of 2016 so far was surely FX's marvelous miniseries The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, which turned the Trial of the (last) Century into 10 fascinating, funny, tragic hours of drama that shed new light on a case that most of its viewers thought they already knew by heart. Given the phenomenon of The People v. O.J., you would think a five-part, 7.5-hour (10 with commercials) documentary on the same subject would be redundant. Who needs to spend even more time watching a retelling of Simpson's trial for murdering ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman? Instead, Espn's newest 30 for 30 film O.J. Simpson: Made in America(*) proves to not only be better than The People v. O.J. — and among the best things Espn has aired in its history — but a perfect complement to the FX show. Where People v. O.J. was...

'O.J.: Made in America': The O.J. Simpson Saga Is Still Riveting Television
Who knew that by the time we were this deep into the current and rapidly evolving Golden Age of TV, O.J. Simpson would suddenly re-emerge -- arguably now in his third cycle -- as one of the preeminent, and perpetually relevant, figures in television history.

Yet here we are, with -- this time around -- irrefutable evidence. First it was compellingly dramatized, and now it's been exquisitely documented in "O.J.: Made in America."

As I was pondering how I could kick off this debut television column for Moviefone, just as fresh episodes of many of the most popular series of the moment have gone or are about to go on hiatus, I got my first glimpse at this powerful, impressive, and affecting documentary that prompted me to consider just how crucial TV was, and has been, and very likely will be in the perceptions we have about O.J. Simpson.

People vs. Oj Simpson -- Real D.A. Did Not Want Clark ... She Just Didn't Listen
Marcia Clark's pigheadedness cost her the trial ... so claims the man who ran the office and regrets tapping her for the assignment. Gil Garcetti, who served as L.A. O.J. Simpson in The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! (1988)
Review: 'The People V. O.J. Simpson' gives 'Marcia, Marcia, Marcia' a fair trial
O.J. Simpson in The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! (1988)
A few thoughts on tonight's The People v. O.J. Simpson coming up just as soon as my stylist turns me into Rick James... How appropriate that we get to wrap up International Women's Day with "Marcia, Marcia, Marcia," The People v. O.J.'s sympathetic mash note to doomed O.J. prosecutor Marcia Clark. It's not straight-up hagiography, as it points out various mistakes Clark made during this period — continuing to dismiss Darden's concerns about letting Mark Fuhrman testify, taking a big stand in court about needing to get home to her kids and then asking her husband to watch them that night (a move that she had to know would blow up in her face, given the contentiousness of the divorce and her new hugely public identity) — but it also illustrates the many challenges she had to face throughout the trial that none of her male counterparts did. Radio...

Review: 'The People v. O.J. Simpson' plays 'The Race Card' between Cochran & Darden
O.J. Simpson in The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! (1988)
A review of tonight's The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story coming up just as soon as I show you my autographed photo of Arsenio Hall... One of the smarter things the The People v. O.J. did was to recognize that with this sprawling cast of characters with conflicting interests and agendas, they had to find some way to keep the narrative feeling focused. A few weeks ago, we got an hour that was just about the day of the white Bronco chase. With "The Race Card" (written by Joe Robert Cole and directed by John Singleton), it's an episode primarily about Johnnie Cochran and Christopher Darden's former friendship and the ways each man relates to the La law-enforcement apparatus. The series had already reminded us that Cochran used to work in the Da's office, but that flashback to a younger Johnnie being cuffed in front...

Review: 'The People v. O.J. Simpson' assembles 'The Dream Team'
O.J. Simpson in The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! (1988)
A few thoughts on tonight's The People V. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story coming up just as soon as I don't have a Father's Day reservation... Celebrity is one of the key subjects of The People V. O.J. as a whole, and particularly of "The Dream Team." The hour gives us Robert Kardashian's lecture about the hollowness of fame falling on his children's deaf ears. It gives us Kato experiencing the upside and downside of fame in under a minute. And it gives us Gil Garcetti's proclamation that "a star is born" after Marcia Clark's first major press conference about the case. Mainly, though, the hour is concerned with the growing number of celebrity attorneys who will be mounting O.J.'s very expensive defense. Robert Shapiro, who specialized in plea bargains, came to realize that he needed a lot of help (even if he...

Robert Kardashian
Review: FX's compelling 'The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story'
Robert Kardashian
"Fame is fleeting," Robert Kardashian tells his kids in an early episode of FX's The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story (it debuts tomorrow night at 10). "It's hollow. It means nothing at all without a virtuous heart." Young Kim, Kourtney, Khloe, and Rob look at their father like he's speaking some long-dead language they have no hope of understanding. Their dad is on TV, and getting priority seating at overbooked restaurants, all because he's famous — and only famous, at that, because his best friend happens to be Simpson, the world's most famous accused murderer. Of course fame means everything to these kids. The People v. O.J. — the first installment of a new FX anthology series from Ryan Murphy (American Horror Story, Glee), and not to be confused with ABC's similarly-titled anthology series American Crime — isn't really a Keeping Up with the Kardashians origin story. The kids only appear...

American Crime Story: The People V. O.J. Simpson Trailer Spotlights The Infamous Murder Trial
After spinning a yarn on American Horror Story, writer, producer and showrunner Ryan Murphy is swapping the gothic corridors of FX’s acclaimed drama for the courtroom with February’s anthology series, American Crime Story: The People V. O.J. Simpson.

Serving as executive producer on the miniseries, Murphy will help bring the infamous court case of O.J. Simpson to the small screen. That’s a role to be filled by Cuba Gooding Jr., and today’s one-minute snippet showcases the star-studded ensemble that the network has pulled together. Aiming to offer a more conclusive verdict on the historic trial – which at one point included Kris Jenner and Robert Kardashian – FX has promised to tell the untold story of the 1995 case, though exactly how much the limited series can disclose will be told in time.

If nothing else, American Crime Story: The People V. O.J. Simpson has pulled together...

Full Trailer for American Crime Story: The People V. O.J. Simpson
FX has released the first full trailer for their upcoming new series American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson. The series comes from American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy, who directed the first episode of the anthology crime series.

I’m intrigued by true crime stories like this, and I’m really curious to see how this series plays out. I was a teenager when all the O.J. Simpson stuff was going down, and I remember how crazy the media and just regular people were over it. That’s all anyone really seemed to care about at the time.

I’m looking forward to the series, and this trailer reintroduces us to several of the main players in the story. I’ve gotta say… John Travolta looks creepy as hell as Robert Shapiro.

O.J. Simpson: The D.A. Was an ‘A**hole’
O.J. Simpson: The D.A. Was an 'A**hole'

It wasn't enough for O.J. Simpson that prosecutors bungled his murder case and allowed him to be free for more years than he should have ... he also called the D.A. who prosecuted him an "a**hole" ... and it's all on tape.

We've obtained footage of Simpson, shot 5 years ago for a documentary -- which shows O.J. driving through Brentwood -- the L.A. area where he slaughtered Ron Goldman and Nicole Brown Simpson back in 1994.

In one of the clips, O.J. points out the home of former District Attorney Gil Garcetti and screams, "A**hole!"

In the documentary, titled "O.J. Monster or Myth?” -- Simpson also bragged that he has hidden assets from Fred Goldman.
