Another season of The Rookie, another pesky Bailey issue, and yeah, another piece where I’m complaining about it.

Surely, you’ll let me know if I’m being too hard on this woman in the comments.

The Rookie Star Has An Answer To A Question Fans Have Asked For 7 Years
Image
At a panel for The Rookieduring this year's San Diego Comic-Con, star Nathan Fillion offered an intriguing answer to a question that fans have asked for years. Even though The Rookie season 8 won't debut until next year, the police procedural has broken new ground. It'll feature scenes in Prague, which marks the first time that the ABC hit has filmed overseas.

Many viewers, though, are more immediately concerned with what's next for Tim (Eric Winter) and Lucy (Melissa O'Neil). The turbulent duo have had plenty of highs and lows, even heading into The Rookie season 7 finale, but their courtship could potentially grow more complicated if Tim knew that Lucy and John (Fillion) briefly dated.

During a panel for The Rookie at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, with ScreenRant in attendance, Fillion was asked whether Tim would ever find out that John and Lucy dated. The actor and executive producer...

Image
Superman director James Gunn couldn’t hold back his laughter after an online media outlet confused actor Nathan Fillion with his brother, Jeff Fillion, and used the wrong man’s face to celebrate the Superman star’s career.

An article by the Canadian site Info Petite Nation meant to honor actor Nathan Fillion accidentally featured a photo of his brother instead. The former took to Instagram on July 4th to turn the gaffe into gold:

Thank you, Info Petite Nation, for the lovely and flattering article on my career.

Gunn was among the first to respond with a hearty laughing emoji, quickly followed by industry peers like Michelle Monaghan, Elizabeth Banks, and The Rookie co-stars Jenna Dewan and Alyssa Diaz. A public slip-up might’ve embarrassed another team, but this crew turned it into a meme-worthy masterstroke.

New The Rookie Spinoff Gets Promising Update (& Title)
Image
Two years after The Rookie: Feds, ABC is ready to give the Nathan Fillion-led The Rookie another spinoff. The proposed spinoff has just received an official title as well as a major development update.

Per Deadline, the new spinoff is currently titled The Rookie North and has "been gaining momentum for a pilot order" from ABC. However, that would only happen once the lead role, described as a male in his 40s-50s, has been cast, with Deadline noting that a handful of known actors have already been approached for the role. The Rookie North is one of several projects in serious pilot consideration at ABC for the 2025-26 season, along with the Scrubs reboot, the Rachel Bloom-led Do You Want Kids?, and the comedy Mittens.

Of those four projects, one will make it to pilot and join 9-1-1: Nashville as the only new scripted series on ABC's 2025-26 schedule.

“Bailey is an energy vampire”: Why The Rookie Fans Now Hate Jenna Dewan’s Character
Image
ABC’s The Rookie ain’t just another cop show; it’s a character-driven procedural built around real-life inspiration. Created by Alexi Hawley and starring Castle alum Nathan Fillion, the series follows John Nolan, a man in his 40s who joins the LAPD after a life reset. Loosely based on officer William Norcross’s true story, The Rookie blends action, heart, and a second-chance narrative.

Since premiering in 2018, it’s grown into an ensemble drama across seven seasons, with season 8 on the way. But lately, one character’s stirred major backlash, pulling focus and draining fan goodwill with every appearance—Bailey.

How Jenna Dewan’s Bailey Hijacked The Rookie and Left the Plot Gasping for Air

Okay, now this isn’t about Jenna Dewan the person. It’s about Bailey Nune, the fictional multitool of a character who somehow manages to suck all the narrative oxygen out of The Rookie.

Everything You Should Know About ‘The Rookie’: Season 8, Cast, Plot, and Streaming Details
The Rookie (2018)

From standoffs and stakeouts to romantic entanglements and internal affairs investigations, each season builds on the last, expanding the emotional depth and range of its characters. With Season 8 officially greenlit, there’s renewed interest in where the story is headed and who’s returning.

"I'm Actually Pushing It on Her": 'The Rookie' Star Teases Sergeant Grey’s Influence on Chenford’s Season 8 Dynamic
Image
The Chenford romance is one of, if not, the most beloved relationships in the long-running police procedural, The Rookie. While Bailey (Jenna Dewan) and John Nolan's (Nathan Fillion) marriage has its own appeal, the dynamic between Lucy Chen (Melissa O'Neil) and Tim Bradford (Eric Winter) has seen fans of the show embark on a roller-coaster ride for a number of seasons now. By the time Season 7 ended, the couple had reunited romantically after their breakup in Season 6, and Richard T. Jones, who plays Sergeant Grey, has teased how this might affect the couple's relationship with their superior.

Grey had always been on the side of Chen, and the glee and pride were exceedingly evident when he presented Chen with news of her promotion. The officer had also cultivated a close relationship with Bradford, so when he received word the pair were casually seeing each other again, it threw him off.

Will ‘The Rookie’ Season 8 Continue Chenford’s Will They/Won’t They Dynamic?
Image
Season 7 of The Rookie was packed with many subplots to keep audiences engaged. The return of Jason Wyler (Steve Kazee), Bailey's (Jenna Dewan) abusive and criminal ex-husband, meant that for a time period, John Nolan (Nathan Fillion) and his wife were caught in the eye of a violent storm. The introduction of new recruits, Miles Penn (Deric Augustine) and Seth Ridley (Patrick Keleher), meant the chance to explore new stories with Seth's compulsion to lie a key part of the season's storyline. Among this and other subplots, the writers and showrunner Alexi Hawley also had to craft out some space for Chenford's romance to be explored.

Lucy Chen (Melissa O'Neil) and Tim Bradford (Eric Winter) saw their relationship end in Season 6 when Tim unilaterally decided he was not good enough for Lucy. The couple spent a large part of Season 7 working their way back to each other. Despite several hook-up situations,...

“We’ll Definitely See Him Again”: ‘The Rookie’ Showrunner Teases the Return of the Show’s Longest-Running Villain in Season 8
Image
Matthew Glave’s Oscar Hutchinson ended the Season 7 finale of The Rookie in the wind despite the best efforts of Officer John Nolan (Nathan Fillion). Spanning over half a dozen seasons, The Rookie has introduced several side characters and villains who have, in their time as part of the ABC procedural, added to the show's value. Glave's Oscar has been a recurring villain and, despite the assumption that he had been bagged, he ultimately finished the season beyond the reach of the LAPD. Showrunner Alexi Hawley was quizzed on why this particular villain had persisted, and it would seem like the actor's ability on screen is a huge factor.

In The Rookie Season 7 finale, Oscar takes Fillion's Nolan captive with Nyla Harper (Mekia Cox) on his tail and coming to John's rescue. Oscar would end up making his escape in a helicopter right before Nyla could wrap her fingers around him.

The Rookie Confirms Season 8's Big Villain (And It's a Great Choice)
Image
The Rookie Season 7 brought back a major villain from past seasons, but with an unexpected twist ahead of Season 8. ABC's police procedural drama series has had its fair share of villains through the years, such as Bailey's abusive ex-husband Jason Wiley (Steven Michael Kazee), racist cop Doug Stanton (Brandon Routh), and serial killer Rosalind Wyler (Annie Wersching).

In The Rookie Season 5, fans are introduced to Bridget Reagan's Monica Stevens, a shady defense attorney who has a strong alliance with some dangerous criminals. Monica is the kind of villain who doesn't go guns blazing at enemies. Instead, she manipulates the justice system and uses legal loopholes to carry out her goals.

The Rookie's Season 6 finale saw Monica's downfall after the LAPD almost arrested her. While she ultimately escaped, it was also a win for the department because she was branded as a suspect and was on the run.

‘The Rookie’ Creator Alexi Hawley On Season 7 Finale’s Chenford Cliffhanger, Old Nemeses’ Return & Show’s Newfound Popularity With Young Viewers

Spoiler Alert: The story includes details about the Season 7 finale of ABC’s The Rookie.

Chenford is (almost) back together. After a season of post-breakup heartache, casual hookups and truth serum-induced confessions, The Rookie‘s fan favorite couple took a giant step to reconciliation in the finale, which only physical exhaustion prevented from completion.

Lucy (Melissa O’Neil) and Tim (Eric Winter) faced one last obstacle after she became his peer by passing the Sergeant exam — working on opposite schedules as she was assigned the night shift. Both needed some encouragement from friends but finally got together. Tim cooked Lucy breakfast after her shift and poured his heart out in a speech asking her to move in with him to no response as Lucy had quickly dozed off. As Tim said to himself while covering Lucy with a blanket, “To be continued.”

Fed Up Of “Revolving door, Black male” Characters, The Rookie Fans Demand One Actor Becomes A Permanent Addition In Season 7
Image
With a mix of good storytelling and character-driven stories, The Rookie has been a fan favorite police procedural drama in recent years. Starring the iconic Nathan Fillion as John Nolan, over the years, it has also introduced us to some unforgettable faces. But there’s one thing many fans have grown tired of: the constant in and out of Black male characters.

Fans have been quite vocal about the same on Reddit, with one user even pointing out the name of actor Deric Augustine, who plays Miles Penn. As soon as he joined the show, fans knew they were watching someone special. So, they are now calling for him to stick around for good. And guess what? Their wish has come true if recent updates are to be believed.

The Rookie Finally Found a Character More Annoying Than Bailey, and I’m Over It
Image
There are certainly some mixed feelings regarding The Rookie Season 7.

Some of the plots have ranged from problematic to ridiculous, some of the series’ most compelling characters have spent most of the season on the bench, and what even is happening with Chenford?

But one thing The Rookie has succeeded in, to the surprise of many, is producing a character that’s more irritating than Bailey.

(Disney/Mike Taing)

It’s no secret that Bailey Nune is a polarizing character. Poor thing, she has certified haters in all corners of the fandom.

Let the record show that it has nothing to do with Jenna Dewan, but some characters will rub people the wrong way, and The Rookie’s answer to Malibu Barbie fits the bill.

"I Think They've Come Through It": 'The Rookie' Showrunner Confirms The End of Nolan and Bailey's Baby Journey
Image
The Rookie has offered its fair share of twists and turns this season as regards its most beloved characters. Recent events have seen Chenford set on the pathway to reconciliation, which is exciting for Lucy Chen (Melissa O'Neil) and Tim Bradford (Eric Winter). But while one couple might see their wishes come true, another will have theirs dashed on the rocks. Bailey Nune (Jenna Dewan) and her husband, John Nolan (Nathan Fillion), have enjoyed a beautiful romance, and part of their journey has centered around expanding their family. With Bailey deciding against IVF in Season 6, adoption became the next likely option. However, those hopes might never be fully realized.

In The Rookie Season 7, Episode 13, "Three Billboards," the couple set their adoption plans in motion, as they decided to meet a social worker and turn in an application. It is a process that ends in denial, as the social worker admits...

‘The Rookie’ Just Bumped This Fan-Favorite Up to Series Regular Ahead of Season 8
Image
With only a few episodes remaining in Season 7, The Rookie just got a major update. Deadline reports that Deric Augustine, who made his debut as Miles Penn in the series earlier this year, has been upped to a series regular. Penn is one of this season’s rookies, even though he’s a transfer from Texas with several years of experience as a police officer. The most recent episode of The Rookie saw anti-LAPD billboards emerge across the city. As the team searches for who’s responsible, a car bombing prompts another investigation, and tonight’s episode will follow documentary filmmakers interviewing the LAPD on a complicated missing person case connected to John (Nathan Fillion). The Rookie will conclude with its season finale in May after 18 episodes.

"That's Also a Reality for Lots of People": 'The Rookie' Showrunner Confirms the Future Bailey and Nolan's Adoption Storyline
Image
Nolan (Nathan Fillion) and Bailey's (Jenna Dewan) quest to expand their family through adoption might not have the happy ending they or the viewers expected. Following various meetings with social services in The Rookie Season 7, the couple learned that they were not suitable candidates for adoption. Their dangerous lives were not conducive to adopting a child, the social worker told them. The Rookie's showrunner, Alexi Hawley, confirmed to Screen Rant that the show was done with the arc. "I think it has [come to an end]. I think that's a road, sadly, with a lot of low points for them. But I think that's also a reality for lots of people. The part, [especially], where they couldn't have a kid biologically was very recognizable," he said. While Bailey and Nolan have dangerous lives, it doesn't apply to every first responder, something Hawley clarified, saying:

"I do think that, at the end of the day,...

'The Rookie' Showrunner Explains Season 7's Shocking Death
Image
After all the big talk on The Rookie about the elusive and extremely well-connected assassin Malvado (played by Jimmy Gonzales), it was a bit shocking to — spoiler alert for those who haven't seen "Mad About Murder" — watch him die in the fourteenth episode of the current seventh season. But for many fans, it was also probably a relief: a tied-up loose end from Bailey Nune (Jenna Dewan)'s past, ensuring her abusive ex-husband, and her connection to his death, is never known.

For The Rookie showrunner Alexi Hawley, though, that wasn't the most interesting and important part of the story. And in a new interview with Collider, the writer/producer explained what he thought the series, and a character like Bailey, gains from the Malvado storyline popping into her life at this moment in time. "I think, at the end of the day, you know, what was the most interesting...

Fans think Zander Hawley has overstayed his welcome on The Rookie
