Tiger Woods Biopic Set at Amazon MGM, Obamas’ Higher Ground in Talks to Produce
Image
Amazon MGM is developing a movie about Tiger Woods, with Barack and Michelle Obama’s company Higher Ground in talks to produce.

Based on Kevin Cook’s book “The Tiger Slam: The Inside Story of the Greatest Golf Ever Played,” the biographical drama will chart the rise of the child prodigy turned golf star. “King Richard” filmmaker Reinaldo Marcus Green is attached to direct.

Taking inspiration from the book’s moniker, the film is expected to focus on Woods’ triumph of winning four consecutive major championships, known as the “Tiger Slam.” After turning pro at age 20 in 1996, Woods became one of the most recognizable golfers of all time. He has 15 major championship wins to his name, including 82 PGA Tour victories.

His life off the green, though rife with drama, reportedly won’t be depicted in the film. In 2009, Woods fell from grace after numerous extramarital affairs came to light. As part of the fallout,...

The Dynasty Director Discusses the New England Patriots' Controversies and Drama
Image
Hamachek and team expertly combine interviews and archival footage to create a compelling sports docuseries on the New England Patriots dynasty. The series sheds light on the human drama behind the iconic NFL team, presenting a complex and contextually rich portrait of their rise as an 'evil empire.' From incredible footage to surprising revelations about the Patriots' controversies, The Dynasty offers a fascinating look at the team's journey from underdogs to perceived villains.

Author Jeff Benedict and filmmaker Matt Hamachek have a special artistic relationship. Benedict co-authored (with Armen Keteyian) the premiere biography of Tiger Woods, and Hamachek (with Matthew Heineman) brought it to vivid life in the two-part documentary Tiger. In 2020, Benedict released arguably the most well-researched and authoritative account of the New England Patriots dynasty which spanned the first two decades of our young century, The Dynasty. It was a time when quarterback Tom Brady, coach Bill Belichik,...

Tiger (2021)
HBO’s Tiger Woods Doc Drives 37% More Viewers for Part 2 Over Premiere
Tiger (2021)
The second half of HBO’s Tiger Woods documentary drew 874,000 total viewers on Sunday night, charting significant growth over Part 1.

Part 2 of “Tiger,” which notably featured Rachel Uchitel’s first-ever sit-down interview about her relationship with Woods, grew 37% over Part 1, which scored 639,000 viewers the day of its premiere last week.

The second installment covered Woods’ downfall in the wake of multiple injuries, the infamous 2009 affair scandal that tarnished his public image and the 2017 DUI arrest that many saw as a death knell for the golfer’s career. It also covered Woods’ comeback victory at the 2019 Masters Tournament.

“Tiger” currently stands as the most-watched HBO Sports doc since Bill Simmons’ “Andre the Giant” walked through the curtain back in April 2018. A spokesperson for HBO said last week that there have been “about 15” HBO Sports titles in the genre between the two docs.

“Tiger” hails from HBO Sports and Jigsaw Productions in association with Our Time Projects.

‘Poisoned,’ Documentary About Food Safety, in Works From ‘Fed Up’ Director (Exclusive)
Image
The filmmakers behind “Tiger” and “Fed Up” are teaming with the producer of “Jiro Dreams of Sushi” on a new investigative documentary into food safety.

Entitled “Poisoned,” the film will be directed by Stephanie Soechtig and executive produced by Jeff Benedict and produced by Ross Dinerstein’s Campfire. It will be based on Benedict’s book, “Poisoned: The True Story of the Deadly E. Coli Outbreak That Changed the Way Americans Eat.”

“‘Poisoned’ began with my interest in writing about the Jack in the Box E. coli infections in 1993 that sickened over 750 children, four of whom died,” said Benedict in a statement. “But once I entered that world, it became clear the story was much bigger than one outbreak. It’s the same broken system behind each of these horrific events, and while we’ve become more vigilant about what we eat, the issues plaguing the industry rage on.”

Soechtig...

‘Tiger’ Directors on Documentary’s Powerful Opening Scene That Almost Didn’t Happen
Hernán Belón, Leonardo Sbaraglia, Eva De Dominici, and Diego Chavez in Tiger, Blood in the Mouth (2016)
Hollywood loves character-driven stories with a meteoric rise, a dramatic fall and the ultimate redemption. Tinsel Town is going to love HBO’s Tiger Woods documentary, and so will viewers — and it’s only going to take two minutes to hook you.

“Tiger,” from directors Matthew Heineman and Matt Hamachek, has an excellent opening scene. The cold open combines never-before-seen footage from Eldrick “Tiger” Woods’ dad, Earl, speaking glowingly about his boy at the Haskins Collegiate Awards Banquet with a childhood Tiger making sure “daddy” just saw his brilliant iron shot from the fairway. Earl’s audio continues over a signature Woods win at The Masters, and then ultimately, laid on top of police-station footage from Tiger’s 2017 DUI arrest.

Yeah, it’s been a wild 45 years.

Heineman and Hamachek told TheWrap they first read about Earl Woods’ proud-papa Haskins speech in Gary Smith’s 1996 Sports Illustrated article, “The Chosen One.

HBO's Tiger Woods Documentary Is Finally Here, and No, He Didn't Approve
Image
Tiger, the new HBO documentary about golfing legend Tiger Woods's life, gives us an inside look into the often enigmatic athlete's personality, childhood, and career. Jaw-dropping in its depictions of Woods's relationship with his father, the backlash after his cheating scandal, his chronic pain and resulting opioid addiction, and his struggles with fame and pressure, the documentary is making waves within the sports community and beyond. As a living legend known by many as the greatest golfer of all time (just second to Jack Nicklaus in major championships), it is fascinating to finally get the chance to know the human behind the mythology. That being said, if you're wondering whether Woods participated in or approved the documentary, he definitely did not. In fact, in all probability, he does not approve or support it.

According to a statement released to Golf Digest, Tiger Woods's agent Mark Steinberg isn't pleased about the new doc,...

HBO’s Tiger Woods Documentary Cuts Through The Brush Revealing The Truth About The Celebrity Golfer (And It Ain’t All Pretty)
Image
While honestly not being the biggest sports fan, especially when it comes to professional golf, one player in particular quickly became a household name and that is Tiger Woods. Even if you have never followed a game of golf in your life, you have most certainly heard the name Tiger Woods and how he came to dominate the sport at such a young age, but as we have learned by watching HBO’s new two-part documentary “Tiger” that domination certainly came with a hefty price. As quickly as one can rise, they can fall just as fast and things can get ugly very quickly! HBO’s documentary is based upon the book “Tiger” written by Armen Keteyian and Jeff Benedict. Keteyian is also one of the executive producers for the HBO two-part series. The series immediately delves into Tiger’s relationship with his father Earl Woods, who was without a...

‘Tiger’ Tees Off as HBO’s Most-Watched Sports Doc in 2 Years
Hernán Belón, Leonardo Sbaraglia, Eva De Dominici, and Diego Chavez in Tiger, Blood in the Mouth (2016)
Part 1 of HBO’s Tiger Woods documentary, “Tiger,” hooked 639,000 total viewers across all platforms on Sunday.

That’s not amazing, but it is better than par for the course. The 639,000 total viewers mark the best performance for an HBO Sports doc since Bill Simmons’ “Andre the Giant” walked through the curtain back in April 2018.

The “Tiger” tally includes all platforms — so yes, streaming is counted here — and a TV encore. A spokesperson for HBO estimated there have been “about 15” HBO Sports titles in the genre between the two docs.

Part 2 of “Tiger” premieres this coming Sunday on HBO and HBO Max. Like the Part 1 debut, it will face competition about as stiff as it gets in the form of the primetime NFL Playoffs.

HBO’s two-part “Tiger” doc is driven by never-before-seen footage and revealing interviews with those who were once close with Woods, including his former caddy and close...

HBO’s ‘Tiger’ Shows a Golfing Great’s Inner Turmoil: TV Review
Image
Tiger Woods’s story was easy to read as the most inspiring in American sports until the very moment it became among the most depressing. On one side of the pivot point of November 2009 sits a life lived in public as an athlete bound for glory from his earliest days, treated as a Messianic figure by his overweening father and, shortly thereafter, as a culture-shifting superstar by the media. On the other, after Woods’s double life was suddenly and publicly ripped open, sits scandalous ignominy that, as Woods’s preternatural athletic gifts slipped away with age, could no longer merely be clawed through with athletic achievement.

These two halves to Woods’s life so far form the two parts of HBO’s excellent new documentary “Tiger,” a project that brings together an unusual serious-mindedness with as rare a gift of pacing. This series makes elegant and understated arguments about celebrity,...

HBO’s ‘Tiger’ Documentary Trailer Charts Tiger Woods’ Meteoric Rise – and Shocking Fall (Video)
Tiger Woods
HBO has shared the very revealing trailer for its two-part documentary series on Tiger Woods.

“Tiger” charts the rise, fall and comeback of arguably golf’s greatest player of all time. (You can chill about Jack’s major title wins — we said “arguably.”)

Watch the “Tiger” trailer above. In the sneak peek, golf legend and six-time major champion Sir Nick Faldo asked, “What has Tiger done to Tiger Woods?”

Indeed, we all wondered the same thing as we watched the golf phenom fall hard from the pedestal he was (probably unfairly) placed upon by his game and the media.

But that’s not even the best quote from the trailer — that honor goes to a line from Robert Lusetich, author of “Unplayable: An Inside Account of Tiger’s Most Tumultuous Season.”

“The problem with conquering the world, is that the world will want its revenge,” Lusetich said.

The trailer’s kicker,...

As the Masters kick off on Thursday, HBO has debuted the trailer for “Tiger,” a two-part documentary film that goes deep into Tiger Woods’ life and especially his relationship with his late father Earl Woods.

In the teaser trailer, Earl Woods talks intimately and emotionally about his gift to his son and how he hopes he will become a humanitarian to go beyond the game of golf. The film explores the world-class golfer’s rise, fall and comeback and the drama surrounding Woods’ sex scandal that has forever altered his game and his world.

HBO’s Tiger Woods Series by Two White Directors Is a Flashpoint for ‘Decolonizing’ Docs
Image
When HBO Sports announced upcoming docuseries “Tiger,” controversy followed. The problem didn’t lie in the sometimes-tabloid story of champion golfer Tiger Woods, but in its telling: The directors are two white men, Matthew Heineman and Matthew Hamachek, who previously collaborated on the Oscar-nominated “Cartel Land,” on which Hamachek served as editor.

HBO dropped the production’s introductory press release July 9, in the middle of a summer marked by the deaths of Ahmaud Arbery and George Floyd, nationwide protests, and Black Lives Matter. A community of Black, Indigenous, and people of color (Bipoc) documentary filmmakers responded to “Tiger” as one more film in a series that never seems to end: a story of Black people told by white men. And this time, they would not allow their voices to remain on the margins.

When Heineman announced the film on Facebook July 10 (“Our goal was to dive deeper and create an...

CNN’s ‘Exclusive’ With Laurie Fine Is Eerily Similar To The CBS ‘Exclusive’ With Mike McQueary
On Nov. 15, CBS touted an exclusive interview with Penn State assistant coach Mike McQueary, the man who allegedly saw and reported Jerry Sandusky abusing a boy in the locker room shower. The interview with Armen Keteyian lasted a whopping 24 seconds and its only legacy was a brief "shaken like a snowglobe" Internet meme. Fox News doesn't submit entries, and with the exception of the one CNBC award, the other cable news networks were shut out.

Among the surprising winners: Sundance Channel and Planet Green won two awards, and VH1 won one.

One underlying theme was the state of the TV news industry as speakers at the event repeatedly put the spotlight on staff and budget...
