War of the Dead (2012)
Directed by: Marko Makilaakso

Written by: Marko Makilaakso

Starring: Mikko Leppilampi, Andrew Tiernan, Samuel Vauramo, Jouko Ahola, Antti Reini, Magdalena Gorska

The zombie movie apocalypse continues with War of the Dead, an action film/zombie hybrid with some surprisingly strong cinematography, solid performances and several other positive aspects the target audience will not especially care about.

During WWII, along the Russian border, Nazi scientists hide away in a secret bunker and perform “anti-death” experiments on captured Russian soldiers. When the test subjects turn into crazed, flesh-eating zombies with superhuman strength, the experiments are abandoned and the “evidence” is buried in a mass grave. Two years later an American and Finnish task force led by Captain Stone (Andrew Tiernan) is recruited to find and destroy the Nazi bunker. They face off with German soldiers and several men on both sides are killed or severely wounded.

The remaining members of the task force continue on their mission,...

Efm 2013: News Wrap-up - Dead Snow: War of the Dead, The Pact 2, Autumn Blood, Dead End, Territorial
There's lots of news today coming out of the European Film Market in Berlin, and rather than write several stories, we figured it would be a little easier to drop the whole thing on you in one neat package. Read on!

First up for you Nazi zombie fans, writer and director Tommy Wirkola (Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters) is returning to his native Norway to direct the action-filled Dead Snow: War of the Dead.

“Set to be released in both English and Norwegian, the new film follows the sole survivor of a Nazi zombie attack who battles an even larger army of zombies with the help of the Zombie Squad, a professional gang of zombie killers from the Us.

Wirkola says of the new script for his sequel to the cult hit Dead Snow: “[It's] bigger, scarier, funnier, more action-filled and gorier than the previous one.”

Next, a sequel to...

Bryan Singer’s H+ The Digital Series is Now Live
We told you last month about Bryan Singer‘s H+ The Digital Series, the futuristic online series where the human race is hardwired to the Internet – it does sound great, doesn’t it? but apparently in the series, this is a “bad” thing – and we’re happy to report that the first two episodes are now live.

Admittedly, I haven’t always been a fan of web series. This, however, is great. It is completely professional in every way, with absolutely top notch production values. And I would like to see all of it right now. Unfortunately, if you didn’t click on it by noon Pacific time yesterday, you only get to see the first two episodes. The good news: two new episodes will be released at noon Pacific every Wednesday for a total of 48(!) episodes.

Here are the details:

War of the Dead Never Emerges from the Fog of War: A Movie Review
Director: Marko Mäkilaakso. Writers Marko Mäkilaakso, and Barr B. Potter. Cast: Andrew Tiernan, Mikko Leppilampi, Samuel Vauramo, Jouko Ahola, Mark Wingett, and Andreas Wilson. War of the Dead was originally titled Stone's War. This film has undergone several other changes in its eight year production history. Production companies have come and gone along with primary cast members. James van der Beek was one actor who was attached to this picture only to be replaced by another. War of the Dead released in the United Kingdom on DVD May 28th and this film has not overcome the many challenges of production. The film reviewed here is simply lackluster in story and character development. Only a few exciting film elements draw this title out of complete oblivion. The film is set during World War II. Finnish and American forces are working together to destroy an underground German bunker. Beneath the ground, an...

DVD Review: War of the Dead
War Of The Dead

Stars: Andrew Tiernan, Samuel Vauramo, Mark Wingett, Jouko Ahola | Written and Directed by Mark Makilasko

“Captain Martin Stone (Tiernan) is leading a finely-trained, elite platoon of American and Finnish soldiers as they attack an enemy bunker. Underestimating their enemy’s strength, they are quickly beaten back into the forest. As they try to regroup, they are suddenly attacked by the same soldiers they had just killed a few minutes earlier. Forced to flee deeper into Russian territory, they discover one of war’s most terrifying secrets and realize they have woken up a far deadlier enemy.”

I first saw War of the Dead (on the big screen no less) at Glasgow Frightfest, but sadly I slept through half of it – whether that was because of the film or just a lack of sleep was always a matter for debate. Until now. Having sat through Momentum’s...

Is Stone's War of the Dead Finally Beginning to Twitch?
It's been a long time since last there was anything to report on War of the Dead (formerly Stone's War). So long in fact that we had all but written the film off. However, that's the thing about the dead; eventually they will rise.

Over on the official War of the Dead Facebook page a couple of new videos have been posted. That indicates good things, right? We hope so. Dig on them below.

Marko Makilaasko directs. Andrew Tiernan, Jouko Ahola, Mikko Leppilampi, Samuel Vauramo, Mark Wingett, Andreas Wilson, Antti Reini and Magdalena Gorska star.

Synopsis

The parallels must be balanced or the film could easily fall to comedy. War of...

Review: The American
This is the Pure Movies review for The American, directed by Anton Corbijn and starring George Clooney, Violante Placido, Thekla Reuten, Paolo Bonacelli, Irina Björklund, Björn Granath, Johan Leysen, Filippo Timi and Samuli Vauramo. Written by Dan Higgins. This is a literary adaptation of Martin Booth’s A Very Private Gentleman and, as the title suggests, Clooney plays a character that is both enigmatic and elusive. In fact, he hardly talks. He has no women in his life and, from the opening scene, it is easy to see why this is the case. A priest attempts to befriend Jack (who now goes by Edward), while he finds company, solace and sex with a local prostitute called Clara. It is evident though that he is being tracked and his past seemingly instructs him to trust nobody and be suspicious of everyone, including people that he starts relationships with.

Daily News – Day 4
This is the daily news vodcast from the London Film Festival on Pure Movies covering the gala premiere of The American, directed by Anton Corbijn and starring George Clooney, Violante Placido, Thekla Reuten, Paolo Bonacelli, Irina Björklund, Björn Granath, Johan Leysen, Filippo Timi and Samuli Vauramo.
