‘Duster’ Canceled at HBO Max After One Season
Image
Just a week after its Season 1 finale aired, J.J. Abrams and Latoya Morgan’s 1970s crime series “Duster” has been canceled by HBO Max.

The series, which was a collaboration between Bad Robot, TinkerToy Productions and Warner Bros. Television, starred Josh Holloway as a getaway driver and Rachel Hilson as an FBI agent who team up to take down a powerful crime syndicate.

In a statement, HBO Max said that while it would not move forward with a second season, it was “so grateful” to have had the chance to work with Abrams, Morgan and Bad Robot.

“We are tremendously proud of this series led by Josh Holloway and Rachel Hilson and we thank them along with our cast and crew for their incredible collaboration and partnership,” the streamer added.

Meanwhile, Warner Bros. Television praised Abrams and Morgan for delivering a “thrilling, multi-dimensional crime drama” with “textured characters that took...

The 1970s crime series “Duster” has been canceled at HBO Max after just one season, Variety has confirmed.

The news comes less than a week after the show aired the Season 1 finale, with “Duster” having originally premiered on the streamer in May. The series starred Josh Holloway and Rachel Hilson and hailed from co-creators and executive producers Latoya Morgan and J.J. Abrams.

“While HBO Max will not be moving forward with a second season of ‘Duster,’ we are so grateful to have had the chance to work with the amazingly talented co-creators J.J. Abrams and Latoya Morgan, and our partners at Bad Robot and Warner Bros. Television,” HBO Max said in a statement. ‘Duster’ Canceled By HBO Max After One Season
Image
Exclusive: After a five-year build-up, it was a short run for Bad Robot’s 1970s crime drama Duster as HBO Max is not proceeding with a second season of the series from J.J. Abrams and Latoya Morgan. The news comes less than a week after the Season 1 finale debuted on the platform.

It is not entirely surprising because Duster, starring Josh Holloway and Rachel Hilson, wasn’t able to generate a lot of buzz and viewer interest. Those who tuned in, largely liked what they saw — Duster is averaging 92% among critics and 83% among general viewers on Rotten Tomatoes. The series from Warner Bros. and Abrams’ studio-based Bad Robot also remains in the daily Top 10 on HBO Max but it has not been able to get into the Nielsen Top 10 for streaming originals and barely cracked Luminate’s list of Top 50 streaming originals in its fourth week at the last #50 spot.

‘Duster’: Wait, Were Jim & Nina About to Kiss? Josh Holloway & Rachel Hilson Weigh In
Image
[Warning: The following post contains spoilers for Duster Episode 6.] Things get pretty hairy for Nina (Rachel Hilson) and Jim (Josh Holloway) in this week’s edition of Duster… but things also end on a somewhat swoony note. Like Episode 2 (which was also directed by Steph Green), this segment begins with the ending, as the two have to work together to survive a shootout. The story then goes back in time to reveal how they’ve gotten there. The day of the big meeting with the Russians, Nina is almost found out when Agent Grant (Dan Tracy) shows up to the hotel where Nina is waiting for Saxton (Keith David). Billy (Evan Jones) rightly clocks her as duplicitous, and while Royce (Benjamin Charles Watson) is too busy flirting to notice, Billy doesn’t let it go. After Royce becomes loopy from mixing his heart medication with alcohol at the meeting, causing a scene with the Russians, Billy gets...

Yellowstone Star's New Crime Drama Series From J.J. Abrams Holds 92% Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
The HBO Max thriller series Duster has been impressing the critics since premiering on streaming earlier this month. After two episodes, the show has been maintaining a near-perfect score with the critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

Currently, Duster has an approval rating of 92%, labeling the show as Certified Fresh. Its audience score is also strong, sitting at 81%. The new series, a crime drama set in the early 1970s, is noted to not be without its flaws by critics. Even so, almost every critic is satisfied with the series, with many describing it as a fun throwback to the kinds of movies that are from the era.

"With a tangy 1970s look and feel, Duster shifts gears confidently between violent cliffhanger crises and knockabout humor," TV Insider critic Matt Roush said of the show. "Strap in for the joyride."

‘Duster’ Director on That Gory Death, Jim & Nina’s True Connection & More Details
Image
[Warning: The following post contains Major spoilers for Duster Episodes 1 and 2.] The newest episode of Duster, like the series’ first, is stylish, surprising, and full of expectation subversions. Both segments were directed by Steph Green, who worked in close concert with Duster cocreators J.J. Abrams and Latoya Morgan to bring their groovy vision and characters to life. Each features slick action sequences and comedic beats to complement the ’70s-set crime drama at the center of the story. Green, who’s also known for her work in The Americans, Billions, Scandal, and the Star Wars series The Book of Bobba Fett and Ahsoka, also directs two later episodes in the series (Episodes 5 and 6) and has some deep insight into the inner workings of the new Max original. First, a recap of events in Thursday’s (May 21) newest installment: It begins with Jim Ellis (Josh Holloway) in the desert, scrambling to bury a body with a broken shovel when a...

‘Duster’ divides critics: The ‘skillfully executed’ J.J. Abrams show is a ‘messy delight’ akin to an ‘R-rated Hot Wheels series’
Image
Lost creator J.J. Abrams and star Josh Holloway have reunited for Duster, a 1970s crime thriller series that debuted Thursday on Max. The project has an 89 percent at Rotten Tomatoes and a 73 score on Metacritic, with critics essentially agreeing it's a "skillfully executed" show that also serves as a "messy delight."

Abrams and Latoya Morgan co-created the series, which stars Holloway as a getaway driver named Jim Ellis, and Rachel Hilson as Nina Hayes, the FBI's first Black woman agent. Rounding out the main cast are Keith David as Ezra Saxton, Sydney Elisabeth as Genesis Saxton, Greg Grunberg as Nathan Abbott, Camille Guaty as Izzy Reyna, Asivak Koostachin as Awan Bitsui, Adriana Aluna Martinez as Luna Reyna, and Benjamin Charles Watson as Royce Saxton.

Alan Sepinwall (Rolling Stone) raves about the project, "This should all play like hollow mimicry — less tribute than televisual karaoke. But the affection that Abrams and...

‘Duster’ Is J.J. Abrams’ Homage to B Movies and All Things Seventies
Image
As a filmmaker, J.J. Abrams wears his influences on his sleeve. A die-hard Twilight Zone fan, he turned an episode of his first series, Felicity, into a black-and-white riff on that show’s famous “Five Characters in Search of an Exit,” while Lost was full of Rod Serling-esque twists. Abrams’ films as a director have included a Mission: Impossible and two entries apiece in the Star Trek and Star Wars franchises. And his one wholly original movie as a director, Super 8, is an unmistakable homage to early Steven Spielberg.

Duster TV Review: J.J. Abrams and Lost star Josh Holloway reunite for a retro mystery roller coaster
Image
Plot: Set in the 1970s Southwest, Duster explores the life of a gutsy getaway driver for a growing crime syndicate that goes from dangerous to wildly, stupidly dangerous when a tenacious young agent comes into town hellbent on taking his crime family down.

Review: When Lost debuted in 2004, it introduced audiences to several fresh faces, including Josh Holloway. Playing the smart-ass anti-hero Sawyer, Holloway became a sex symbol and seemed to have a big career ahead. Despite a small role in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, the short-lived series Intelligence and Colony, and a supporting turn on Yellowstone, Josh Holloway has been criminally underutilized in Hollywood. Lost co-creator J.J. Abrams and Latoya Morgan set out to create Duster as a showcase for Holloway, which evolved into a rip-roaring retro thriller blending 1970s vibes and mystery series and an intense modern sensibility. Giving Josh Holloway a starring role tailor-made for his good looks and swagger,...

‘How do you feel about violence?”, asks David’s Ezra Saxton as the trailer opens, followed by sounds of engines revving and tires screeching. It only gets wilder from there.

In addition to Holloway, HIlson and David, cast also includes Sydney Elisabeth, Greg Grunberg, Camille Guaty, Asivak Koostachin, Adriana Aluna Martinez, and Benjamin Charles Watson.

The first two episodes are written by Abrams and Morgan; first two episodes directed by and executive produced...

Image
The first trailer for Duster, the new series from J.J. Abrams, has been officially released. Guaty is famous for her role as Maricruz in Prison Break, and Elisabeth previously appeared on The Last O.G. The series was written and created for television by J.J. Abrams and Latoya Morgan. Ahsoka Star Rosario Dawson Announces That Filming Is Officially Underway On Season 2 With First BTS Photo
Image
We got word that filming was set to get underway on the second season of Ahsoka last week during Star Wars Celebration Japan, and star Rosario Dawson has now announced that cameras are officially rolling with our first behind-the-scenes production photo.

The shot isn't especially revealing, but it's clear from the shadow that Dawson is in full Ahsoka mode here.

In many ways, Ahsoka served as a live-action fifth season of Star Wars Rebels, and season 2 looks set to introduce even more elements from the fan-favorite animated series, with Zeb Orrelios (presumably voiced by Steve Blum) set to join Ezra (Eman Esfandi), Hera (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Sabine (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) and Chopper the droid as the Og crew of The Ghost.

Dave Filoni Says "All Out" War Is Coming In Ahsoka Season Two
Image
The Star Wars Celebration event in Japan dropped tons of big news for fans of the sci-fi franchise. A Darth Maul animated series was announced along with other animated series, Star Wars: Starfighter, Shawn Levy's movie starring Ryan Gosling was announced, and more.

On top of that, Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau spent a significant amount of time talking about the second season of Ahsoka. Exciting news included the returns of several characters, including the return of Hayden Christensen's Anakin Skywalker.

However, the most exciting revelations regarding Ahsoka season two come in the form of story details from Dave Filoni. It sounds like this season will feature even more action than the first season. Filoni said the first half of the season will feature an “all out” war.

“I'll just say what it is ‘cause they came all this way, and I know what they really want to...

Ahsoka: Hayden Christensen Confirmed To Return For Season 2; First Look At Rory McCann As Baylan Skoll
Image
Confirming rumors that have been doing the rounds for quite a while, Hayden Christensen announced that he will return as Anakin Skywalker for the 8-episode second season of Ahsoka during the Disney+ show's Star Wars Celebration panel in Tokyo, Japan.

Christensen reprised his iconic Star Wars prequels role in the first season, appearing to his former Padawan Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) when she became trapped in the "World Between Worlds" after a lightsaber duel with Baylan Skoll (the late Ray Stevenson). Anakin served as a spirit guide, of a sort, forcing Ahsoka to confront her past and (potential) future.

Skywalker returned as a Force Ghost (presumably) in the season finale, watching over Ahsoka on Peridea.

Though filming doesn't get underway until next week, some production stills and concept art were showcased during the panel, and we got our first look at Rory McCann as Baylan. We got word earlier this...

Ahsoka Season 2 Story Details Reveal What Becomes Of Ivanna Sakhno's Shin Hati
Image
In the season 1 finale of Ahsoka, several characters were left stranded on Peridia when Grand Admiral Thrawn and his Nightsisters escaped with Ezra Bridger stowing away on their ship.

With former Jedi Baylan Skoll (the late Ray Stevenson) setting off on his own to discover the secrets of the planet, his apprentice Shin Hati (Ivanna Sakhno) is left to battle Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) and Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo).

Shin survives, and we last see her approaching a group of bandits with her lightsaber raised, seemingly as a gesture of surrender.

Hati's intentions were not fully made clear, but a short passage from the upcoming Star Wars: Women of the Galaxy book reveals that she does indeed join forces with these bandits before continuing her crusade to bring down Ahsoka and her allies.

"Shin teams with roving bandits on Peridea and resumes her hunt for Sabine and Ezra.

First Look: ‘Duster’ Series Teaser and Photos with Josh Holloway
Image
Max has released new details along with photos and a teaser for two-time Emmy winner J.J. Abrams (Lost) and Latoya Morgan’s new series Duster, starring Lost‘s Josh Holloway. The drama is set to premiere on May 15, 2025, with new episodes of the eight-episode season streaming on Thursdays at 9pm Et/6pm Pt.

Discussing reuniting with Holloway on a new project, Abrams told The Hollywood Reporter he called Holloway five years ago with a very specific question. “‘Would you ever want to do a show where you play a driver for some kind of criminal organization?’ And he’s like, ‘Yeah.’ So the whole time we were writing this, it was always with Josh in mind. He’s someone I just love working with. And with age, I think he’s gotten even more comfortable with his wry swagger and toughness, and also vulnerability and being unsure of himself. It’s a tough balancing act.

JJ Abrams’ ‘Duster’ Gets May Premiere Date, Stylish Trailer Full of Shady Deals and Deadly Fights
Image
J.J. Abrams and Josh Holloway’s long-awaited reunion may be a bit more stylish than fans of “Lost” were expecting. Max dropped the first trailer for “Duster” on Wednesday, revealing that the ’70s crime caper showrun by Latoya Morgan will premiere May 15.

“Duster” takes place in the American Southwest during the 1970s and follows a getaway driver for a crime syndicate (Holloway). But when a tenacious FBI agent dead-set on taking down the operation sets her sights on him, this already-risky line of work becomes a lot more intense.

“How long you been at this?” Holloway’s character says in the first trailer. “It’s my second day,” Rachel Hilson’s FBI agent responds.

“Well, here’s a little heads up. You’re going to have a s–tty Day 3,” Holloway shoots back.

The trailer then darts between several scenes that capture classic ’70s crime motifs. One minute, someone is...

The Duster Trailer Finally Returns JJ Abrams To TV – And Reunites Him With A Lost Star
Image
Before he became the guy who helped revitalize "Star Trek" on the big screen, resurrected "Star Wars" for a whole new generation with "The Force Awakens", and nearly blinded us with all those lens flares along the way, J.J. Abrams established himself as one of the most promising TV directors and writers in the industry with "Lost." Over 20 years later, he's finally returning to the scene of the crime. Oh, and he's bringing a very familiar face along for the ride, too.

The upcoming HBO series "Dusters," starring "Lost" alum Josh Hollaway, appears to be the payoff to that extremely lucrative deal Abrams signed with Warner Bros. many years ago (which counted the ambitious-sounding "Demimonde" among its main casualties). This new show appears to have dodged that fate, however, which is great news for those of us who've been saying that Abrams' storytelling sensibilities are perhaps best suited to the medium of television.

Amidala's death is what ultimately pushed Anakin Skywalker to fully abandon the path of the Jedi and allow himself to be consumed be the Dark Side of the Force.

The Disney+ Star Wars shows have allowed us to revisit earlier timelines in the Galaxy Far, Far Away, and though we have seen both Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen reprise their respective roles as Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin/Darth Vader, Padme has yet to make an appearance. She has showed up in The Clone Wars animated series and several Star Wars novels, but we haven't seen her in live-action since Rots.

Honestly, the...

Ahsoka Season 2 Will See Game Of Thrones' Rory McCann Replace The Late Ray Stevenson As Baylan Skoll
Image
Star Wars fans had wondered if we might see Baylan Skoll in the galaxy far, far away again despite actor Ray Stevenson's passing, and we now have confirmation that the character will return for the upcoming second season of Ahsoka.

First reported by Jeff Sneider and later confirmed by THR, Scottish actor Rory McCann, best known for playing The Hound on HBO’s Game of Thrones, is set to take over as Skoll in season 2 of the Disney+ Star Wars series.

Stevenson, who sadly died back in May of 2023 just before his 58th birthday, played the villainous(?) former Jedi in the series, and the finale featured his last scene as the character, as we see the powerful Force-wielder standing on the ruins of a mountain-sized sculpture of the Mortis gods.

Skoll didn't have a big part to play in the events of the concluding episode, but Stevenson would undoubtedly...

2024 Emmy Predictions: Best TV Movie/Limited Series Directing
Image
Seven years after coming up short on their respective first and second Best TV Movie/Limited Series Directing Emmy bids against Jean-Marc Vallée (“Big Little Lies”), Steven Zaillian and Noah Hawley are involved in a rematch as helmers of the non-continuing programs “Ripley” and “Fargo.” Despite the quality of their new work and their strong Emmys resumes, they are widely expected to once again be bested by a complete first-timer: Weronika Tofilska (“Baby Reindeer”).

Tofilska is joined in this directing lineup’s category newcomer majority by Issa López (“True Detective”), Millicent Shelton (“Lessons in Chemistry”), and Gus Van Sant (“Feud”). Counting Zaillian and Hawley, Shelton is the only one in the bunch who has ever earned TV academy recognition for directing a non-limited series, as her very first bid came for “30 Rock” in 2009.

In order to determine whether this is truly Tofilska’s race to lose, let’s take...

Star Wars Canon Still Hasn't Decided What Kind Of Villain Grand Admiral Thrawn Really Is
Image
Even in the established Star Wars canon, one can argue that there are two different versions of Grand Admiral Thrawn in the Star Wars galaxy. Created by author Timothy Zahn, Thrawn was a major villain in the wake of Return of the Jedi, as seen in books that are now considered to be non-canon Legends. However, Thrawn has since been brought to the official canon thanks to Dave Filoni's animated series Star Wars Rebels, a live-action debut in Ahsoka, as well as new canon books from Zahn. However, there are still some discrepancies between Filoni and Zahn's versions of Thrawn.

At present, Grand Admiral Thrawn is positioned to become a major threat during the New Republic Era, just like his Legends counterpart. Having returned to the known Star Wars galaxy after years in exile, many expect Thrawn to be the main villain in Filoni's upcoming movie that will reportedly...

Incredible Star Wars Art Predicts Ahsoka Season 2's Thrawn Return
Image
Thrawn's complex character and goals set him apart from other Star Wars villains, seeking influence rather than power. Artist Kiara's Ahsoka artwork captures anticipation for Thrawn's return, showing growth and improvement over time. Ahsoka season 2 brings excitement as we anticipate the interaction between Ahsoka and the returning Grand Admiral Thrawn.

Many believe Ahsoka season 2 will feature more of Grand Admiral Thrawn, and this incredible Star Wars art perfectly captures the sense of anticipation. Thrawn was lost in hyperspace at the end of Star Wars Rebels, stranded on the distant planet of Peridea with Ezra Bridger for years. Before that, he was a member of the Imperial Military, often going head-to-head with the Rebel Alliance. Though Thrawn was not a direct enemy of Ahsoka specifically, Ahsokas past as a Jedi and her allegiance to the crew of the Ghost.

Star Wars: Ahsoka Season 2 Rumored To Be Recasting Baylan Skoll; May Introduce [Spoiler]
Image
Star Wars fans wondered if Baylan Skoll would be recast following the death of actor Ray Stevenson, and we may now have our answer.

The season 1 finale of Ahsoka, "The Jedi, The Witch, And The Warlord," unfortunately, served as a farewell to the late Thor and Punisher: Warzone actor, who sadly passed away last May just before his 58th birthday.

Stevenson played a villainous former Jedi in the live-action Star Wars series, and the finale featured his last ever scene as the character, as we see the powerful Force-wielder standing on the ruins of a mountain-sized sculpture of the Mortis gods.

Skoll didn't have a big part to play in the events of the concluding episode, but Stevenson would undoubtedly have reprised the role at some point. Considering how important his character would appear to be to the ongoing story, there's been a lot of speculation that Baylan might be recast down the line,...

10 Canceled Star Wars Movies & TV Shows We'd Have Loved To See
Image
So many Star Wars movies and TV shows have been canceled over the years, leaving fans longing for certain stories that never came to life. Some projects, like the Boba Fett film and Rogue Squadron, had potential but were scrapped due to various reasons, including creative differences. Even with the cancellations, there are still possibilities for the future, with different directors and writers attached to upcoming films in the Star Wars universe.

So many Star Wars movies and TV shows have been canceled over the years, but here are ten that I'd have desperately wanted to see. When the Skywalker saga wrapped up in 2019, the franchise essentially moved to the small screen - and it's yet to return to the cinemas. The last few years have seen so many canceled Star Wars movies and TV shows, as Lucasfilm struggled to figure out which direction to take next.

In truth, though,...

Star Wars: 10 Things That Make No Sense About Han Solo
Image
Han Solo's history is filled with hilariously nonsensical moments, from absurd bets to outlandish family lore. Chewbacca's life debt to Han was actually flipped in canon, with Chewie saving Han before swearing loyalty. Han Solo's iconic last name "Solo" was given to him by an Imperial officer due to the fact he was traveling "solo."

Though forever beloved by all, several Han Solo storylines and character elements in Star Wars are just hilariously nonsensical. As a third of the core trio of main characters in the original Star Wars trilogy, Han has one of the galaxy's most storied lives. This spans across many years, both in-universe and in real life, stretching from Star Wars Legends (previously known as the Expanded Universe) to Star Wars canon. Such a storied life would no doubt call for some moments and facts that are simply laughable.

This is especially the case for Han Solo,...

The news came with the reveal of the new “Star Wars” film “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” directed by Jon Favreau, which was unveiled Tuesday morning.

‘Four Daughters’ Trailer: A Tunisian Family’s Isis-Induced Dissolution Plays Out in a Layered Metafictional Documentary
Image
For filmmakers, few honors can compare to premiering a movie in competition at the Cannes Film Festival. And for fans of international cinema around the world, seeing a Cannes hit opening in theaters after a long wait can be one of the most exciting moviegoing events of the year. This weekend promises to bring such a treat to New York moviegoers, as Kaouther Ben Hania’s Tunisian metafictional documentary “Four Daughters” makes its way to select theaters.

The film tells the story of Olfa Hamrouni, a Tunisian woman who lost contact with two of her daughters when they left to join Isis. Hania documents the story of the family’s dissolution by casting two professional actors to play the estranged daughters. The narrative device invokes classic metafictional documentaries such as Abbas Kiarostami’s “Close-Up” by simultaneously telling a story and prompting viewers to question the reliability of the film in front of them.
