Sylvester Stallone Biopic 'I Play Rocky' Moving Forward at Amazon MGM
Image
Amid the new trailers and announcements at CinemaCon, we also learned that a new Sylvester Stallone movie is still in the works. This isn't a movie starring, written by, or directed by Stallone: it's about Stallone. I Play Rocky, a biopic about the actor's struggles getting his breakout film Rockymade, is still in development at Amazon MGM Studios. MovieWeb reports that Oscar-winner Peter Farrelly is attached to direct the film.

Farrelly, who won Oscars for co-writing and producing Green Book, which he also directed, is set to take the director's seat for I Play Rocky, which will detail how struggling actor Stallone wrote and sold a script about a Philadelphia boxer to United Artists, and even convinced the studio to let him star in it, too. The film is set to be produced by veteran Hollywood hand Toby Emmerich (Game Night), while Peter Gamble is penning the script. Notably,...

Amazon Confirms Development of Sylvester Stallone Movie 'I Play Rocky'
Image
Among some of the most famous stories about making iconic movies, one that is exceptionally well-known is how Sylvester Stallone made the first Rocky. The actor's perseverance in what could be considered one of the lowest points of his life, paired with the massive success that Rocky turned out to be, turns the making-of story into an underdog story in and of itself. The executives at Amazon MGM Studios seem to have realized this themselves, as an exciting update on a film adaptation of Stallone's campaign to make and play Rocky has now been confirmed.

During the Amazon MGM Studios panel at the recent CinemaCon event (via Film Stories), the project was revealed to be officially moving forward and going into production soon. The film, tentatively titled I Play Rocky, was first announced in a report from Deadline back in May 2024. Peter Farrelly is attached to direct the project,...

Sylvester Stallone Biopic About the Making of Rocky Officially Moving Forward at Amazon MGM Studios
Image
The story of how Rocky came to be could be just as interesting as the film itself. This is the thinking that's in mind for the upcoming biopic about Sylvester Stallone that focuses on the actor and filmmaker getting his legendary boxing movie off the ground.

Previously, it was reported that Peter Farrelly (Green Book) was set to direct I Play Rocky, a feature film focusing on the 1976 movie's creation. It's now been revealed that the movie is officially moving forward at Amazon MGM Studios, as this was verified at CinemaCon, though it's still not known who will play Stallone. Farrelly is also serving as a producer in addition to directing, while Peter Gamble wrote the screenplay.

As of now, there's no word yet on whether Stallone himself will be involved with the movie in any capacity. Stallone wrote the screenplay for the original film in which he also starred,...

Sylvester Stallone and Talia Shire in Rocky (1976)
I Play Rocky | Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky origins is happening
Sylvester Stallone and Talia Shire in Rocky (1976)
A film telling the origin story of the first Rocky movie is pressing ahead at Amazon MGM. Green Book’s Peter Farrelly will be directing.

Prequel and origin stories, eh? There was a period of time where it looked as though we were going to get a sixth Die Hard movie. The idea was to set half of it in the past, so we could learn the origin story of John McClane, arguably Bruce Willis’ most iconic screen role.

We didn’t need to know the origin of John McClane of course. Every piece of information we needed is in the script to the original Die Hard. We’re given what we need for the story to be told and for us to understand the story. What we didn’t need was an exploration of why John McClane became a cop, how he met his wife, and other such details.

A Movie About The Making Of Sports Classic Rocky Gets A Surprising Director
Image
"Rocky" is one of the most beloved sports movies of all time. One could probably even stretch beyond to say that it's plainly and simply one of the most beloved American movies ever made. Now, the movie is getting the "making of" treatment in a new film titled "I Play Rocky." The project has lined up a slightly unexpected director in the form of Peter Farrelly, known best for his work on screwball comedies such as "There's Something About Mary" and "Dumb & Dumber."

According to Variety, Farrelly is set to direct. What's more, casting is already underway for the lead role. Sylvester Stallone, who played Rocky Balboa in the original and its many sequels, is not specifically named as the inspiration for this lead role. However, it's crystal clear this movie is about the actor and his journey to get the cinematic classic made. The logline for the film...

Adjuncts at USC School of Cinematic Arts Seek to Form a Union
Image
Adjunct instructors at the USC School of Cinematic Arts are seeking to form a union, citing concerns about low pay and a recent move to drop health coverage.

Organizers say that 75% of the 248 adjunct faculty members have signed on to the drive to join the Uaw. They are seeking voluntary recognition from the university.

The cinema school relies heavily on adjunct professors, who are typically working Hollywood professionals. According to the organizers, more than 70% of the instructors are adjuncts, compared to just 20% in the 1970s.

Adjuncts who teach two classes make around $22,000 a year. Many teach courses there because they are also eligible for health insurance. But the organizers say that the university has recently started cutting second classes, so that instructors no longer qualify.

The faculty are seeking increased pay and a path to full-time and tenured positions.

“One student pays more money to take my class than I am paid to teach it,...

Adjunct Professors Launch Bid to Unionize at USC’s School of Cinematic Arts (Exclusive)

“I love the school. I bleed cardinal and gold,” says Katy Garretson. The Punky Brewster, Frasier and Fuller House director, who holds two degrees from the University of Southern California, has gotten football season tickets since she was 18 years old and even hosted a Trojan marching band at her wedding.

Still, after she came to USC five years ago to teach at its prestigious School of Cinematic Arts as an adjunct professor, “to say that I was shocked would be an understatement, at the working conditions that the adjuncts are working under.” She was initially struck by the fact that there were only two full-time female professors in the directing program and that adjunct instructors do not get designated parking on campus free of charge (options include paying a $20 flat rate for USC parking or finding street parking, which can be difficult around the school). But other issues surfaced: The pay was low — one year,...

The 2019 Black List Presents the Year’s Best Unproduced Scripts
Julian Silver
The 15th annual Black List survey was revealed Monday December 16, and it includes 66 un-produced screenplays from up-and-coming literary talent. Results were pooled from a survey of more than 250 film executives, each of whom contributed the names of up to 10 favorite scripts that were written in, or are somehow uniquely associated with, 2019 and will not have begun principal photography during this calendar year. This year, scripts had to receive at least six mentions to be included on the Black List.

Since 2005, more than a third of the screenplays included in the annual Black List surveys have become produced films, and often to notoriety — such as “Argo,” “American Hustle,” “Juno,” “The King’s Speech,” “Slumdog Millionaire,” “Spotlight,” “The Revenants,” “The Descendants,” and “Hell or High Water.” Melina Matsoukas’s 2019 film “Queen & Slim,” written by Lena Waithe with a story co-authored by James Frey, was featured on the 2018 Black List.

Eli Roth Will Produce a New Halloween Horror Film Called 10-31 For Orion Pictures
Eli Roth is set to produce a new Halloween horror film called 10-31 for Orion Pictures. The script for this film was written by Ian Shorr and Peter Gamble and a lot of studios were trying to acquire it, but Orion ended up getting their hands on it.

The script is based on a story by Laurie Ashbourne and screen story by Kathy Charles, and the story “follows a young woman who takes her niece and nephew trick-or-treating and discovers a note inside a candy wrapper that says there’s a killer loose on her block.”

That’s certainly an intriguing concept and hook. Roth talked about how great the script is in the following statement:

Eli Roth Producing 10-31, a Slasher Movie with One of the Scariest Premises He's Read in Years
Cate Blanchett, Jack Black, and Eli Roth in The House with a Clock in Its Walls (2018)
Hostel director Eli Roth is set to produce a new slasher movie for Orion Pictures titled 10-31. Not much has been revealed about the flick just yet, but Roth seems to think we could have the makings of a new classic on our hands. That's a bold claim, to be certain, but Roth calls the script one of the best he's read in years with a truly scary premise at its center.

According to a new report, 10-31/">10-31 was written by Ian Shorr and Peter Gamble, then subsequently acquired by Orion Pictures. Shorr and Gamble were working from a story by Laurie Ashbourne and screen story by Kathy Charles. While details are slim, the story is said to center on a young woman who takes her niece and nephew trick-or-treating. Along the way, she discovers a note inside a candy wrapper that states a killer is on the loose in her neighborhood.
