Best remembered for her role as the glamorous receptionist Jennifer Marlowe in the hit CBS sitcom Wkrp in Cincinnati, she became a household name in the late ‘70s and ‘80s. But her career extended far beyond that iconic portrayal — Anderson brought charm, wit, and elegance to various television and film roles that cemented her place in pop culture history.

A true stalwart of the entertainment industry, she bridged the golden era of network television with the evolving landscape of modern TV, working well into her 70s. From sitcoms to dramas, here’s a look at five of her most acclaimed projects, ranked by IMDb.

Lifetime’s ‘The Boy Who Vanished’ Balances Heart and Mystery [Review]
Image
Last month’s Lifetime film, I am Your Biggest Fan, focused exclusively on an abduction. This month’s pick, The Boy Who Vanished, explores the same kind of crime, albeit with a focus on the aftermath.

Writer Ken Miyamoto tosses the audience in the deep end right from the start. The film opens at night as a teen boy walks up to a payphone and calls the police, identifying himself as kidnapping victim Jack Reese.

It’s not until we’ve gone through the morning routine of Haley (Tegan Moss) and Richard (Matthew Kevin Anderson) that the couple’s connection to Jack becomes evident. They seem mildly overprotective of their young, pre-teen son Tyler (Kingston Goodjohn) and for good reason: when Haley and Richard meet with Detective Doyle (Vincent Ross) at the police station, it is revealed that Jack is their son…and he’s been missing for twelve years.

Nicely Entertainment Presenting Soap Opera Spoof ‘Ladies Of The ’80s: A Divas Christmas’ In Cannes
Image
Exclusive: LA’s Nicely Entertainment has acquired campy telemovie Ladies of the ‘80s: A Divas Christmas, and is bringing its soap opera shenanigans to the Cannes Market.

The film stars Loni Anderson (Wkrp in Cincinnati), Morgan Fairchild (Falcon Crest), Linda Gray (Dallas), Donna Mills (Knots Landing) and Nicollette Sheridan (Knots Landing) as five glamorous soap opera stars who reunite to shoot the final Christmas episode of their long-running show. Producer Alex (Travis Burns) and director Nell (Taylor Ann Thompson) do their best to keep things on the rails but old rivalries resurface and threaten to tear the production apart. The divas are forced to put their differences aside and the show becomes an unexpected ratings hit, creating a new TV format for them and a romance for Alex and Nell.

The movie’s score and theme song ‘Ladies of the ‘80s’ was written by Songwriters Hall of Fame’s Steve Dorff...

‘Ladies Of The ’80s: A Divas Christmas’ Stars Talk Lifetime Movie, Former Leading Men, And Intimate Scenes They’d Like To Forget
Image
Tonight, Lifetime will jump on the sentimental trend of reuniting veteran actresses for our giddy enjoyment by airing Ladies of the 80s: A Divas Christmas, a festive romp that stars Loni Anderson (Wkrp in Cincinnati), Morgan Fairchild (Falcon Crest), Linda Gray (Dallas), Donna Mills (Knots Landing) and Nicollette Sheridan (Knots Landing).

The holiday flick from longtime producer Larry A. Thompson (Liz & Dick) follows five soap opera divas as they reunite to shoot the final Christmas episode of their long-running sudser.

“I’ve known all these ladies all these years,” he told Deadline. “We’ve worked together, made movies together, and Donna Mills I’ve managed since Knot’s Landing and I still do. So between managing Donna and being friends with the ladies, I said it might be fun to have all these ladies in a movie. And there’s been a trend lately of older stars joining together to be in movies,...

Lifetime To Air ’80s Themed Holiday Movie With Loni Anderson, Morgan Fairchild, Linda Gray, Donna Mills & Nicollette Sheridan
Image
Exclusive: Holy high waisted jeans! Lifetime has a big ’80s themed surprise in store for the holidays.

As the tentpole for its holiday movie slate, Lifetime will air Ladies of the 80s: A Divas Christmas, a festive romp starring Loni Anderson (Wkrp in Cincinnati), Morgan Fairchild (Falcon Crest), Linda Gray (Dallas), Donna Mills (Knots Landing) and Nicollette Sheridan (Knots Landing).

Filmed earlier this year, the movie follows five soap opera divas as they reunite to shoot the final Christmas episode of their long-running sudser. The producer, Alex (Travis Burns) and director Nell (Taylor Ann Thompson), who happen to be old college friends, do their best to keep things on the rails but as the ladies come together, old rivalries resurface that threaten to tear the production apart. With the show nearly canceled before it even begins due to the ladies’ famous diva behavior, they reluctantly agree to set aside their...

Holiday Movies Coming to Television in 2020
Image
Christmas might not be until December, but some networks are slapping on their mittens and gearing up for the holiday season as early as October.

Families often find themselves gathered around the TV binging some of Hallmark or Lifetime’s latest Christmas-themed films, and this year is no exception. With people around the country encouraged to stay indoors and avoid crowded locations, Variety breaks down a list of feel-good Christmas movies to tune into this year.

As part of Lifetime’s “It’s a Wonderful Lifetime” holiday movie slate, the channel will premiere 30 original TV movies beginning Oct. 23 and running through mid-December. In its efforts to diversify the stories it showcases, Lifetime said it worked with GLAAD and Cape (Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment) for its first-ever LGBTQ-led film “The Christmas Setup” and “A Sugar & Spice Holiday” centering on an Asian American family.

More films will be added to the list as networks announce them.

How Ang Lee Is Trying To Change The Way Films Are Shown
As technology evolves, so does art. Movies went through revolutionary changes when sound was added, and again when color became the norm. For director Ang Lee, simply making one major change for his next movie isn.t enough. Lee.s next film Billy Lynn.s Halftime Walk will be shown next month for the first time in its intended way. This means that it will be seen in 3D, with a 4K Hdr resolution, and at 120 frames per second. While 3D in cinemas has become a fairly standard occurrence, your traditional movie theater projector creates the three-dimensional image by producing each of the two necessary images in an alternating fashion. At the Future of Cinema Conference in Las Vegas, where Billy Lynn.s Halftime Walk will be shown, video manufacturer Christie will be providing a dual laser projector which will allow for a significantly brighter image than a standard projector.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens – Adam Driver Confirmed As Kylo Ren
Annie Leibovitz / Vanity Fair

The 4th was with us this May bank holiday, with ‘Star Wars Day’ heralding the release of a wave of new information and pictures from The Force Awakens from Vanity Fair.

The biggest reveal was the official confirmation that Girls’ Adam Driver would indeed be playing ‘broadsaber’-wielding villain Kylo Ren. This had been widely speculated, but now we know for sure it’s Driver under that mask, with a picture of him on set revealed as well, showing an unmasked Ren accompanied by First Order snowtroopers, on a frozen planet that plays home to their secret base (it being Hoth would be an ironic turn of events).

Ren is expected to be the film’s main antagonist, and the teasers released so far have shown him not only with his controversial weapon, but also commanding an army of stormtroopers in what appears to be a raid on a village.

Gwendoline Christine's Role In Star Wars: The Force Awakens Revealed
Believe it or not, Vanity Fair has been your one stop shop for all The Force Awakens info on this May the Fourth, with behind the scenes pictures and the reveal of who will be behind the mask of the villainous Kylo Ren. Now, they have revealed previously unknown role of Game of Thrones' Gwendoline Christie, and it's a character we've have seen all too briefly in the latest trailer for Jj Abrams highly anticipated continuation of the Star Wars saga. Glimpsed clad in her pretty sweet chrome Stormtrooper armour, Christie will be playing Captain Phasma, an officer in the First Order (we've been hearing quite a lot of this today. Are they The Force Awakens answer to the Empire?) with a legion of Stormtroopers under her command, who will be taking up villain duties beside Adam Driver's Kylo Ren.

New Star Wars Picture Reveals Gwendoline Christie as Captain Phasma
Gwendoline Christie at an event for Game of Thrones (2011)
Star Wars Day is off and running, and hot on the heels of this morning’s fantastic looks at new Star Wars: The Force Awakens characters played by Adam Driver and Lupita Nyong’o is another photo that reveals yet another new character: Captain Phasma. Gwendoline Christie, who portrays Brienne of Tarth on Game of Thrones, plays Phasma in the film, who is an officer of the nefarious First Order. This being Star Wars and all we figured there’d be two villains, and it certainly looks as though Christie will be the other main baddie alongside Driver. Director J.J. Abrams previously revealed that the character of Phasma was originally written to be a man, but after thinking on it they all decided there was no reason the part couldn’t be rewritten as a woman. Christie has done wonderful work on Game of Thrones thus far, and it...

Fox backs laser projection to lift 3D box office
Suraj Sharma in Life of Pi (2012)
The era of laser illuminated projection came a little closer over the weekend following screenings of Life of Pi and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes using new Christie Digital technology which promise to lift levels of 3D movies to a par with that enjoyed in 2D.

The presentations, on Saturday and Monday at cinema and TV trade show Ibc in Amsterdam, marked the first time a full length feature has been screened with Christie 6P Laser Projection.

20th Century Fox, which flew four executives into Amsterdam for the occasion, regraded both films to suit the higher brightness levels and has pledged to master all of its future 3D releases at 14 foot-lamberts / fL, the same light levels as 2D and a substantial improvement on the 4 or 6 fL possible with existing 3D digital projectors.

“Exhibitors who are enjoying the 3D ticket premium need to step up and install equipment that’s going to allow them to present...

Gwendoline Christie May Be Playing An Imperial Officer In Star Wars: Episode VII
Another day, another nugget of news about J.J. Abrams’ upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII… Today, we’ve heard again from Badass Digest’s Devin Faraci, who last brought us a very intriguing scoop about the film opening with a lightsaber falling into the hands of a struggling protagonist played by John Boyega. Whether or not that’s true remains to be seen, but Badass is back with some more neat information about the blockbuster – this time regarding the character playing by Game of Thrones actress Gwendoline Christie.

According to Faraci, Christie’s character is an imperial officer hunting Boyega’s character, who is potentially a deserter. Faraci added that the actress has been training with a lighsaber, teasing:

“Could she be an Imperial officer who has a lightsaber? Or is it something more? I’m hearing the S word.”

Faraci has heard that Christie will have some cool action sequences...

'Star Wars': Who might Lupita Nyong'o and Gwendoline Christie play?
Anthony Daniels, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, James Earl Jones, David Prowse, and Kenny Baker in Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977)
After much harrumphing that the new Star Wars film was in danger of not being Title IX compliant, the Force was somewhat balanced yesterday with the announcement that Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o and Game of Thrones actress Gwendoline Christie had been cast in J.J. Abrams’ space epic. That’s hardly gender parity — with Carrie Fisher and newcomer Daisy Ridley the only other females currently announced — but it’s certainly a substantial and necessary improvement for a traditionally boys-heavy franchise entering the post Hunger Games universe. Thus far, the only significant female Star Wars characters in six episodes have been...

Lupita Nyong'o and Gwendoline Christie Join 'Star Wars: Episode VII'
When the new "Star Wars" cast was announced, it was noticeably lacking in the lady department (adorable British newcomer Daisy Ridley was a notable exception). The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Replaces Lily Rabe With Game Of Thrones' Gwendoline Christie
There are a number of Game of Thrones characters who would probably do pretty well in the Hunger Games arena, but it's hard to imagine that many would do better than Brienne of Tarth, the hardcore warrior woman played by Gwendoline Christie. We may never get to see exactly how that situation would play itself out, but at the very least we will now what it's like to see Christie inside the sci-fi universe. Deadline is reporting that the actress has signed a deal with the folks at Lionsgate that will see her replace Lily Rabe in the upcoming The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 and Part 2. In the film, Christie will be playing Commander Lyme, a military leader out of District 2 and former Hunger Games victor who joins Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence), Peeta (Josh Hutchinson) and the rest of the rebellion against President Snow (Donald Sutherland) and the leaders of Panem.

'Game of Thrones' Star Gwendoline Christie Joins 'Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2'
Brienne of Tarth is going to Panem!

Variety reports that "Game of Thrones" star Gwendoline Christie is replacing Lily Rabe in "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2."

Rabe had to drop out due to a scheduling conflict with her upcoming performance in Shakespeare in the Park's "Much Ado About Nothing" this summer in New York City.

Now, Christie will take over the part of Commander Lyme, a leader of the rebellion who hails from District 2. Like Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), Lyme was a victor of a past Hunger Games.

Tall and strong, Christie certainly looks the part of the fierce commander. In "Game of Thrones," she plays the sword-wielding warrior Brienne of Tarth, who's become a fan favorite for clashing with Jaime Lannister.

"The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1" hits theaters this fall, while "Mockingjay: Part 2" follows in fall 2015.
