Outlaw Posse is jam-packed with historical information, as if a passionate history teacher was given the opportunity to create a big-budget Hollywood movie. As Impact Network rebrands from a faith and gospel-focused multiplatform channel to include family-friendly lifestyle entertainment designed for Black audiences, Variety can exclusively reveal its first “Impact Original” movie, “The Life of Me.”

Brian White (ABC’s “Scandal”), Brandon T. Jackson and Danielle Nicolet (CW’s “The Flash”) star in the film about a wealthy businessman, who “disillusioned by his family’s illicit business dealings, escapes to a small town and finds friendship, love, and a new focus on life until he must confront his past, reveal his identity, and redefine his future.”

White plays Marcus Banks, a real estate mogul and heir to his family’s multi-billion dollar development business, who is described in the film’s official description as a “man with a conscience.”

Review: Mario Van Peebles is in the enviable position of being a writer, director and actor who can make the kinds of movies he wants with the people he wants. He was able to gain recognition on his own merit, outside of his father’s work, as he appeared in films like Heartbreak Ridge with Clint Eastwood, Ali with Will Smith, as well as cult classics like Gunmen which co-stars Christopher Lambert. He would work with him again in Lambert’s franchise sequel, Highlander: The Final Dimension. Plus, Van Peebles would gain acclaim as a director with the films he’s pulled double duty on — such titles as New Jack City...

Outlaw Posse is a western anchored by Van Peebles' charismatic lead performance. The film features a starry supporting cast that adds depth and complements the eccentric characters. Despite attempts at political commentary, the movie fumbles important messages due to multiple subplots.

Mario Van Peebles' revisionist western, Posse, ended with a caption lamenting Hollywood's erasure of 8,000 black cowboys and their stories. Thirty years later, Outlaw Posse attempts to shine a light on the Old West's diverse history, with mixed results. Outlaw Posse isn't a sequel to the 1993 western and the director is no longer directly reacting to Hollywood's whitewashed vision of America's past. Instead, Van Peebles reacts to the binary times of the present, presenting a western that celebrates diversity, and the role it must play in building the prosperous nation first promised by those early Wild West pioneers.

If Sergio Leone had ever signed on to make one of those ‘70s Blaxploitation oaters that once provided steady employment for Fred Williamson, it likely would have looked and sounded much like “Outlaw Posse,” a wildly uneven but cumulatively entertaining shoot-‘em-up that finds Mario Van Peebles doing triple duty as director, screenwriter and star. Quadruple duty, actually, if you count his credit as an executive producer.

“Outlaw Posse” has nothing to do with Van Peebles’ previous entry in this genre, 1993’s wild and woolly “Posse,” which suggests the multitasking filmmaker is tipping his Stetson to the multitude of ‘60s Spaghetti Westerns that, ahem, borrowed titles and eponymous characters from better known yet totally unrelated horse operas. But, then again, maybe not. Indeed, the film will probably be enjoyed most by folks not given to undue consideration of such trifling matters as lineage, logic and arrant anachronisms.

Reach for the sky cause Mario Van Peebles has returned to the old West! In 1993, Mario Van Peebles dabbled in the Western genre with Posse, which he had written, directed, and starred in. Now, Peebles has gotten back into the director’s chair for a new feature he wrote called Outlaw Posse. The trailer has now been released courtesy of Quiver Distribution and features Mario Van Peebles acting alongside his son, Mandela, who also plays his son in the movie. This keeps the tradition of the Van Peebles filmmaking lineage rolling along as Mario was also heavily involved with his father, Melvin Van Peebles’ film career. Mario would even make a biopic where he portrayed his own father with the film Baadasssss!, which is a play on the title of Melvin’s famous movie Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song.
