Forty-two short films from 23 countries will screen in the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival’s Short Cuts section, TIFF organizers announced on Wednesday.

The shorts include “Dammi,” which stars Riz Ahmed and was directed by Yann Mounir Demange, an Emmy nominee in 2021 for “Lovecraft Country”; “Electra,” a new film by Czech director Daria Kascheeva, who was nominated for an Oscar for the animated short “Mother”; “27,” for which director Flora Anna Duba won the Short Film Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival; and “Woaca,” the directorial debut of Canadian actor Mackenzie Davis.

According to TIFF, more than half the films are directed or co-directed by female or female-identifying filmmakers. Almost half the films, 19 out of the 42, are by Canadian filmmakers. Twenty one of the films will have their world premieres at TIFF.

The 2023 Toronto International Film Festival will run from Sept. 7 through Sept. 17.

Green Arrow's Love for Black Canary Complicates His Playboy Reputation
Image
Warning: The following contains mentions of violence and sexual assault.

Green Arrow's reputation as a womanizer is exaggerated; he is actually loyal and possessive of Black Canary, though history has unjustly remembered him as a player. The relationship between Green Arrow and Black Canary is extremely complicated, involving retcons and convoluted storylines. Green Arrow's character has been significantly changed in later stories, portraying him as an unrepentant womanizer, but newer series are reconciling these conflicting histories and allowing for a fresh start.

The reports of Green Arrow constantly cheating on long-time love interest Black Canary are greatly exaggerated. While Oliver Queen was once the sort of womanizer that Bruce Wayne only played at being, he was a changed man after becoming Green Arrow and utterly loyal — to the point of possessiveness — to his "pretty bird." Unfortunately, history has unjustly remembered Green Arrow as an unrepentant player.

To say the relationship...

Green Arrow's Version of a Classic Batman Foe Debuted 17 Years Earlier
Image
Green Arrow and Batman have a history of borrowing from each other, and Green Arrow actually faced off against a shapeshifting criminal before Batman did. DC wanted to capitalize on Batman's popularity without oversaturating the market, so they created more Batman stories without calling it Batman. Batman and Green Arrow have had a long history of borrowing from each other, and one long-forgotten Green Arrow villain is remarkably similar to a classic Batman villain — 17 years before that Batman villain gained his most famous form. After Batman's explosion of popularity, DC wanted to capitalize on it without over-saturating the market with Batman comics. The solution they came up with was to just make more Batman (without calling it Batman).

Created by Mort Weisinger and George Papp,...
