‘The Chicken Sisters’ Hallmark+ Series Creator Talks Season Finale And “Planting Seeds” For a Second Season
Image

Adapted from Kj Dell’Antonia’s book, The Chicken Sisters, which was a Reese’s Book Club pick in December 2020, Hallmark’s eight-part series of the same name aired its finale on Hallmark+, becoming one of the first complete shows that helped launch the streaming app for the network.

Set in the fictional town of Merinac, the series follows two dueling dynasties behind warring fried chicken restaurants — Mimi’s and Frannie’s — which dived the town in terms of loyalty. Complications within the Mimi’s family line add to tension between the businesses, especially when daughter of Mimi’s owner Amanda Moore Hiliard (Schuyler Fisk), who is married to a Frannie’s boy, reaches out to Kitchen Clash, a reality food competition show, to consider the feud for their new special. This brings Mae Moore (Genevieve Angelson), the other daughter...

The Chicken Sisters review: Down home mess that struggles to delight
Image
The Chicken Sisters, Hallmark+'s first original scripted series, has made its debut and, while Hallmark's core audience may give the show a chance, it's not an immediate winner.

The drama, based on the novel by Kj Dell’Antonia, follows two feuding chicken restaurants. There's Frannie's, a polished establishment that has the makings for a franchise if they just had the capital. And Mimi's, comparatively a hole in the wall that's referred to as a "shack." Some mighty good chicken is served there but the restaurant hasn't modernized.

The crux of the story centers on what happens after Amanda Moore Hillier (Schuyler Fisk) decides to apply for Ultimate Kitchen Clash, a cooking competition that pits two rival eateries against each other in a fight for $100,000. Amanda does so on a whim after yet another night being dismissed by her husband Frank Hillier Jr. (James Kot). To her surprise, Frannie's and...

Harper’S Island (Mike's DVD Review)
Viewing the CBS slasher series Harper’S Island one episode after another on the recently released four-dvd set, as opposed to waiting week by week to catch the next installment, has an unusual effect. It makes the 13-episode show’s earlier, weaker parts more tolerable, while somewhat diminishing the effectiveness of its later, stronger episodes.

Mixing elements of nighttime soap opera into its murder mystery, Harper’S Island gathers together a large crew of friends and family members to attend the wedding of Henry Dunn (Christopher Gorham) and Trish Wellington (Katie Cassidy) at the titular locale. Henry is working-class and Trish comes from money, so the ensemble necessarily includes Trish’s equally well-to-do bridesmaids and Henry’s party-hearty buddies, though the central character is Abby Mills (Elaine Cassidy), Henry’s best friend from their childhood growing up on Harper’s Island. Abby has long been absent from the place, ever...

Thomason (Jimmy), Matt Barr (Sully), Katie Cassidy (Trish) and Gina Holden (Shea) talk about how they prefer to die in the show.

Holden makes a reference to Chloe and Cal's deaths in the series, saying she prefers to die like them "in a poetic and peaceful" way.

Not featured on the footage but still alive on screen are Cassandra Sawtell aka Madison and Brandon Jay McLaren aka Danny. Rumor has it Wakefield has an apprentice and he will kill at least two more in the two-hour...
