Such is the case for Ruby Gillman (voiced by Lana Condor), who finds out that she comes from a family of krakens, whose history goes to the depths of the dark and mysterious ocean. Condor stars in the animated family comedy Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, which takes her on a journey of self-discovery as she learns the truth about her royal lineage and destiny.

Directed Kirk DeMicco, Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken was produced by Kelly Cooney Cilella, with Faryn Pearl serving as co-director. DreamWorks Animation’s “Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken” (in theater’s now) is a different kind of undersea adventure.

The title character is a seemingly regular teenage girl living in the town of Oceanside (voiced by Lana Condor) who knows that her family is keeping something from her but doesn’t understand that she is actually the latest descendant in an underwater kraken kingdom. Thankfully, she reconnects with her grandmother (Jane Fonda) and together they unlock her kraken powers. Or maybe the right phrase is release the kraken.

And she’ll need it, as she’s got to do battle with a cute, popular girl who is also an evil mermaid. This leads to an unexpectedly epic kaiju battle between mermaid and kraken that is pretty amazing.

Dreamworks Animation announced Tuesday during the Annecy International Animation Festival that production of Orion and the Dark, an animated feature penned by Charlie Kaufman, will come to Netflix in 2024.

Based on the book by Emma Yarlett, the story follows Orion, an anxious young boy voiced by Jacob Tremblay, who is afraid of the dark. Then, the literal embodiment of his worst fear — “the Dark” (voiced by Paul Walter Hauser) — pays him a visit to prove there is nothing to be afraid of in the night. Orion must decide if he can learn to accept the unknown and embrace the joy of living.

“It has the Charlie Kaufman stuff in it,” said producer Peter McCown of the offbeat story by the Oscar winner, whose writing credits include Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Anomolisa and Synecdoche, New York.

Exclusive: Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken has a lot going for her.

For starters, says the film’s director Kirk DeMicco, “she’s a princess, a superhero” and the first female titular character for a DreamWorks Animation movie.

Of course, there have been female lead characters in DreamWorks animated pictures, “but this is the first time where we said the story really is hers,” adds co-director Faryn Pearl (Trolls World Tour). “We changed the title from The Gillmans to Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken because it felt that we really wanted to celebrate that it’s her story, it’s her journey. And she’s our superhero, really.”

Without an animated feature release this year (“How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” and “Abominable” bow in 2019 through Universal Pictures), DreamWorks will rely on its new shorts program for Oscar contention. Launched by studio president Chris deFaria, the program represents its own brand of inclusion and diversity.

The first two releases are the exquisite and refreshingly dark “Bird Karma,” and the charming and funny “Bilby.” Both offer very different survival stories and distinctive 2D and CG looks.

With “Bird Karma,” director William Salazar (“Kung Fu Panda”) got to finish a short he started more than 20 years ago about a long-legged bird that takes a liking to a multi-colored fish. But instead of becoming friends, the bird eats the fish, which results in some really bad karma. Enhancing the Indian theme is a score by Nora Kroll-Rosenbaum as part of an inclusion program, “Universal Film Music Composer Initiative: DreamWorks Animation.
