Murder in Mahim, the book by Jerry Pinto, was popular for a reason. It was one of those books coming from an Indian author that threw light on a subject that was hardly covered by many authors back in the day. Using the book as the source material, JioCinema Original brings the audience the brand-new show Murder in Mahim, directed by Raj Acharya, released on the streaming platform on May 10th, 2024.

The series begins with the murder of a gay sex worker inside the toilet at the Mahim railway station, and the case is assigned to Shivajirao Jende. A retired journalist, Peter Fernandes, and his wife, Millie, suspect their son Sunil might be gay, are finding ways to accept it, and want to have a conversation with him. The death of the gay sex worker led to a series of murders, as each death directed the police toward the next target.

In the heart of Mumbai, we see a hidden world behind a toilet at Mahim station, where gay sex workers seek shelter from society’s harsh judgment. You see, these people can’t freely love who they want in the open. Why? Because homophobia runs deep in people’s minds, these people are called “criminals” in society’s eyes. Adapted from Jerry Pinto’s renowned novel, the show Murder in Mahim, on Jio Cinema, directed by Raj Acharya, tells us a story from before the Supreme Court lifted the ban on same-sex relationships. Murder in Mahim‘s story starts with the murder of Laxman, a gay sex worker known in their circle as “Proxy.” He was murdered in the Mahim station toilet, and after that incident, more murders followed, which even included police officers. Mumbai, May 6 (Ians) Ashutosh Rana, who is set to portray Peter in the upcoming psychological thriller ‘Murder in Mahim’, has shared insights into his role, revealing how playing complex characters gives him a kick.

The actor, who is known for playing roles like ‘Lajja Shankar Pandey’ in ‘Sangharsh’, shared: “I’m known for playing complex characters, and that’s what gives me a kick. My portrayal in ‘Murder in Mahim’ is something I have never explored before. The emotions and persona of this character in the series attracted me the most, to say yes to this role. Audiences will get to see me doing something that I have never done before.”

Boyle beat out fellow nominees David Fincher (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button), Gus Van Sant (Milk), Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight) and Ron Howard (Frost/Nixon).

After taking this prize and the Golden Globe for “Best Director,” it seems Danny Boyle is the man to beat on February 22 at the Oscars. The DGA Award has matched the Academy Award for “Best Director” all but six times since 1948 when the guild started presenting awards. It was a well-deserved win for the British director.
