Marvel Studios rarely recreates specific comic book covers or panels in its movies, and while staged moments like that sometimes run the risk of falling flat, it's proven to be mighty disappointing for many fans.
When it comes to Marvel's First Family, Bryan Hitch's Fantastic Four #554 cover is an iconic piece of imagery that would have made for a great poster. That didn't happen, but The Fantastic Four: First Steps' leads—Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach—have now revealed their take on it.
If only they were in costume, eh?
In other news, Deadline caught up with Paul Walter Hauser and asked the actor about his role as the McU's Mole Man. "I figured Harvey Elder, Mole Man — mad scientist, angry curmudgeon type with this kind of species that he defends — I was like, I can get on board with that," the actor explained.

The Ultimate Universe initiative at Marvel Comics is not just great for new readers to hop onto; it's perfect for established fans tired of the same old, same old. The setting, Earth 6160, was created by the evil Maker. He intervened throughout the Marvel Universe's history, preventing some heroes from ever rising and corrupting others into a ruling council.
The first mini-series, 2023's "Ultimate Invasion" by Jonathan Hickman and Bryan Hitch, followed this universe's Tony Stark and Reed Richards. The two managed to trap the Maker in a pocket dimension, but they knew he'd be back after 24 months... that deadline has currently inched up to four months.

Marvel is finally ready to top Avengers: Endgame, as a universe-shattering event crowns Thanos' successor as Marvel's greatest big bad, with the entire Ultimate Universe on the line. In 2019, the Avengers fought Thanos for the fate of half of all sentient life. Now, an even greater battle is about to take place, and fans have no idea how it will end.
Spinning out of San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel just revealed new details for the upcoming Ultimate Endgame. For two years, Marvel has been building to the return of the Maker, with its entire Ultimate Universe imprint detailing how Earth's heroes - Spider-Man, Black Panther, the X-Men and Tony Stark's Ultimates - are preparing for his attack on the new timeline he created. Now, the Ultimate Endgame is finally here.
Marvel has been teasing the new Ultimate Endgame series with allusions to its epic 2019 movie, which brought together the entire MCU up until that point.

After years of waiting, Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four: First Steps is now in theaters. Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will finally see what Vanessa Kirby (Sue Storm), Pedro Pascal (Reed Richards), Joseph Quinn (Johnny Storm), and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Ben Grimm) can bring to the table. That, plus there’s Julia Garner as the Silver Surfer / Shalla-Bal and Ralph Ineson as Galactus the Eater of Worlds.
If you’re not familiar with Marvel’s First Family (who debuted way back in 1961), there are decades worth of comic books to read. However, you may not have the time to go through over 700 comic books. That’s not including the Future Foundation and the random plethora of one-shots, crossover tie-ins, and more. Instead of having to dig too far into the past, here are ten great starting points for you to get into the Fantastic Four.

The Dcu is full of upcoming movies and shows. Superman has already arrived, and it’s doing great, both at the box office and with critics. Fans are now waiting for Supergirl, which is coming next year with Milly Alcock in the lead role and Jason Momoa playing Lobo.
After that, more projects are on the way. New movies featuring Wonder Woman, Batman, and the Teen Titans are in development. Scripts for Swamp Thing, Sgt. Rock, and Clayface are also being worked on, and there are even early plans for films about Bane, Deathstroke, and a new Justice League.
But in the middle of all this news, one project seems to be fading from view. That movie is ‘The Authority.’

While the new DC Comics cinematic universe is off to a flying start with this summer's Superman, one of the projects that was announced as part of their initial slate is having trouble getting off the ground. Although one of its members slashed her way into the Man of Steel's new blockbuster, DC head honcho James Gunn says The Authority is stuck in the back-issues bins...for now. While the project hasn't been cancelled, the writer assigned to it is now busy elsewhere.
Gunn discussed the project, and the rest of DC's upcoming slate, on Josh Horowitz's Happy Sad Confused podcast. After delving into the behind-the-scenes details of Superman, Horowitz asked a rapid-fire set of questions about the projects in the pipeline. When asked about The Authority, Gunn winced, and revealed that it's been "a rough road." Elaborating, he explained that the writer who was working on the...

What, exactly, is going on with DC? The answer is, a lot.
After an aborted attempt by Zack Snyder to create a unified universe of characters and subsequent successful one-offs like “Joker” and “The Batman,” Warner Bros. installed James Gunn and Peter Safran as the new co-CEOs of DC Films, under which they will build out an interconnected Dcu of films, TV shows and video games over the next eight to 10 years.
That universe officially got off and running with “Superman,” written and directed by James Gunn, a colorful and buoyant and unabashedly comic book-y adaptation introducing David Corenswet’s Kal-El to the world. The film’s opening weekend box office and assurances from Wbd boss David Zaslav seem to indicate this DC reboot’s going to stick, at least for now. And there’s a lot in the pipeline.

Acclaimed writer Jonathan Hickman reveals who was originally supposed to helm Marvel's new Ultimate Universe.
Per Bleeding Cool, Hickman confirmed an earlier report that the current iteration of Marvel Comics' Ultimate line was originally intended to be written and mapped out by fellow fan-favorite scribe Donny Cates. "I was not supposed to do that book," Hickman said, before explaining that "Donny was going to do that book, and he had been kinda working on it in the background over the years, and he had some stuff go on, they asked me to come in and help, and then take over, and obviously I took it in a different direction."
Hickman went on to explain how he is helming the Ultimate Universe, as well as Marvel's upcoming Imperial event, the latter of which will serve as a starting point for a whole new generation of interstellar titles to come. "A big...

The current Ultimate Universe was created by the Maker, who is the Reed Richards from the original Ultimate Universe (the one that launched nearly 25 years ago), only a Reed that has become criminally insane. The Maker traveled through the Multiverse, chosen an alternate version of Earth, and then remade it, making sure that superheroes never came about, and that the world would be controlled by the Maker and his Maker's Council. However, Howard Stark decided to fight the Maker, and while Howard wasn't able to Defeat him, he Was able to trap the Maker in time, allowing Howard's son, Tony Stark, to kick start the age of heroes that this version of the Marvel Universe never got to have. So that's what the current Ultimate Universe is made up of: heroes who had their destinies delayed for decades, but are now getting ready for the Maker's return, to see if...

Ask almost any DC Comics fan and they'll tell you that Batman is the publisher's smartest hero, which makes it surprising that Superman disagrees. Fans have often speculated that heroes like Mister Terrific, Blue Beetle or the Atom might deserve the 'smartest DC hero' crown, but it turns out there's someone we've been forgetting.

Superman will officially kickstart the rebooted DC Universe on the big screen and director James Gunn has chosen some unconventional characters to grace the screen of the franchise's first tentpole release. Alongside David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, the film will also feature lesser-known (in the eyes of non-comic book readers) heroes and villains like Mr. Terrific, Hawkgirl, Guy Gardner, Maxwell Lord, Metamorpho, and The Engineer. The latter is one of the movie's most niche characters, even within the comic book fandom. But, James Gunn is putting the spotlight on the underappreciated anti-hero in his latest social media promo for Superman.

We got a first glimpse of María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer via set photos when Superman was filming last summer, but director James Gunn has now shared a first official look at the character via a new behind-the-scenes photo.
In the comics, Angela Spica is a heroic member of the super-group known as The Authority, and has a number of powers, including the ability to shape-shift. We're not sure if this first live-action take on the character will have a similar power-set, but we do know that she will be an antagonist to David Corenswet's Man of Steel.
"Happy Anniversary to the Engineer," Gunn captioned his post. "Created by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch, who you can see played to sinister perfection by puppy in human form @thefaria in #Superman this July!

Superman director James Gunn took to social media to share a new behind-the-scenes photo of María Gabriela de Faría (Deadly Class) as The Engineer. You can check out the new photo below!
In the caption, Gunn wrote: “Happy Anniversary to the Engineer, created by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch, who you can see played to sinister perfection by puppy in human form Gaby de Faria in #Superman this July!“
The behind-the-scenes photo isn’t particularly revealing, but it does give us another look at the Engineer’s costume. The location is the same one we saw in the teaser trailer, in which Superman is battling a different black-suited character. Speaking of that teaser, it became the most viewed and talked about trailer in the history of DC of Warner Bros. when it was viewed over 250 million times in the first 24 hours after its release.

Susan Storm, the Invisible Woman, is about to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Played by Vanessa Kirby, Sue will appear with the rest of her family in "The Fantastic Four: First Steps." After that, the Four are expected to return in the next "Avengers" duology, "Doomsday" and "Secret Wars," squaring off with their long-time nemesis Doctor Victor Von Doom, as played by Robert Downey Jr.
Once, the villain of "Secret Wars" was to have been time-traveling Kang the Conqueror — until Kang actor Jonathan Majors was convicted of assault and harassment, and then fired. What if I told you that, in one universe, Kang is just a mask worn by Sue Storm? Nope, I'm not kidding.
This happened in Marvel's original "Ultimate" universe. In this universe, it was Kang, not Thanos, who attempted to gather up the Infinity Gems, and she wanted to "save" the universe, not kill half of it.

It has been over two years since James Gunn announced his plans for Chapter 1 of the Dcu, Gods & Monsters. Audiences finally got to see those plans kick off with the debut of Creature Commandos, and the franchise is moving along nicely as Superman is set to open in theaters in July 2025, followed by previously announced projects like Peacemaker Season 2, Lanterns, and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Meanwhile, Clayface, Sgt.Rock and Dynamic Duo were announced after and have since been added to the slate of releases, showing a diverse line-up of projects and genres for the Dcu. However, some titles announced in January 2023 have made no progress, one in particular feeling like a glaring omission: The Authority.

The Authority was first published by DC Comics under the Wildstorm imprint in 1999. Created by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch, they're a team that gets the job done by any means necessary (their extreme methods care little for politics and law).
Boasting an eclectic cast of characters, the team is one that's bound to appear to filmmaker James Gunn's sensibilities given his work on franchises like Guardians of the Galaxy, The Suicide Squad, and Creature Commandos. The prevailing theory is that he may even be the one to write and direct the project.
It's been a while since we've heard anything about The Authority, though there was some chatter last November about it becoming an animated movie instead of a live-action one.
Today, scooper @MyTimeToShineH has backed up reports that The Authority movie is being "reworked." There's no mention of whether that includes a switch to animation but the...

Harrison Ford never got a chance to return as President James Marshall in an "Air Force One" sequel ("Air Force Two"?), but he will be playing another president in "Captain America: Brave New World" -- President Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross, who was previously played by the late William Hurt in previous Marvel movies. As he did in the comics, Ross will become the Red Hulk, and it looks like he'll be battling it out with Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), the new Captain America.
The President of the United States is a shady character? Truly the most outrageous idea in the Marvel Cinematic Universe yet! All kidding aside, between a reactionary, kleptocratic Republican party and a feckless, enabling Democratic one, you might be wishing for a president who would truly, courageously stand up for liberty and justice for all— perhaps someone like Captain America himself.

Marvel's new Captain Marvel is among the publisher's most powerful queer superheroes of all time, as they reveal their romantic past with lesbian hero America Chavez. There's a mysterious glitch going on in the new Justice League Watchtower, and the one behind it could very well be the Eradicator, a classic Superman villain.
While he hasn't made an appearance in the story just yet, the unmistakable visor of the Eradicator can be seen on the cover for The Question: All Along the Watchtower #2 by Alex Segura, Cian Tormey, Romulo Fajardo Jr., and Willie Schubert.
It's unknown exactly why the Eradicator would be trying to hack into the newly constructed Justice League Watchtower, but from looking at his history and powers, there's no denying that he'd be able to do it.

Warning: Spoilers for Ultimate Spider-Man #11Marvel’s new Ultimate Universe has been a massive success, but one Spider-Man moment has shown just how successful the books’ real-time structure has been for the line. It’s not a perfect device, but it's still an impressive accomplishment and a neat trick that changes the way that these stories are being told.
In Ultimate Spider-Man #11 by Jonathan Hickman, David Messina, Matt Wilson, and Cory Petit, Uncle Ben makes an offhand comment that reveals just how clever the real-time flow of the new Ultimate Universe has been.
Ben and Peter Parker meet up at Aunt May’s memorial to commemorate a year since the supposed terrorist attack that killed her. Readers might not pick up on it, but it’s been almost exactly a year in real time, too. This synchronicity is one of the many factors that helps this universe feel so present,...

The "Ultimate Universe" has been a defining phrase for the Marvel Comics of the 21st century. In 2000, Marvel rebooted their premier characters into a new universe that started over at the beginning.
"Ultimate Marvel" revised superheroes for the new millennium and was a smashing success. The Marvel Cinematic Universe owes as much to Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch's "The Ultimates" as it does to Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's early "Avengers" comics. But after running alongside the original Marvel comics from 2000 to 2015, the Ultimate Universe ended — still, you can't keep a good idea down.
In 2023, Marvel launched a new Ultimate Universe. Like the original Ultimate line, the new one offers a fresh start for new Marvel readers to hop on without overbearing and insular continuity. Keep in mind it's not a continuation of the old Ultimate continuity, just...

The Fantastic Four: First Steps is close to wrapping production (if it hasn't already) and, to celebrate Thanksgiving, Mister Fantastic actor Pedro Pascal just shared an awesome new fan-made poster.
In that, Marvel's First Family gathers for dinner in a recreation of Norman Rockwell's iconic "Freedom From Want" painting.
We're a little surprised Marvel Studios didn't take the opportunity to release something like this yesterday, though we're still not sure when the marketing campaign will fully begin.
The last time we got an official look at the reboot was when a Human Torch poster was released on "4-4 Day." A couple of trailers have leaked since then after debuting at this year's San Diego Comic-Con and D23 events.
Ultimates artist Bryan Hitch also took inspiration from "Freedom From Want" for a cover during his and Mark Millar's Fantastic Four comic book run in the late 2000s.

Marvel Comics' Ultimate line and DC Comics' Absolute titles might be pumping new life into the brands, but these revamped characters won't be replacing the mainline heroes anytime soon. These fresh comics might have fans everywhere talking, but one noted voice in the industry doesn't see them taking over either of the Big Two.
Per Popverse, X-Men editor Tom Brevoort answered several questions from fans on his Substack, one of which brought up the Absolute and Ultimate lines. Brevoort was asked if the success of the lines indicated that it was time for DC and Marvel to shift focus onto these worlds.
For one thing, theres absolutely nothing wrong with the way the mainstream Marvel or DC books are selling. For another, theres no evidence that the momentary interest in Ultimate or Absolute is going to be able to maintain that interest over the long haul. Just look at DC:s New 52 from a decade ago.

Marvel has just redefined its new Ultimate Universe by killing off Tony Stark's Iron Lad, the leader who has assembled and empowered the team up until now. Ultimates #6 sees the team fully assembled at last, preparing to engage in a rescue mission. However, the Ultimates are led into a trap by Bruce Banner's Legendary Hulk. With Dooms escape plan for the Ultimates disabled, the heroes are left with no choice but to fight against the Hulk and his Immortal Weapons for their lives, while waiting for Doom to teleport the team out.
Towards the end of the fight, Tony Stark is placed into a vice grip by the Hulk and crushed in his armor. She-Hulk engages Hulk in battle to try and save Tony, but she too is overpowered. Just before Hulk can deliver the killing blow, Doom is able to reconnect the team to the Ultimates Network...

Warning: Spoilers for The Ultimates #6!Marvels newest Ultimate Universe version of the Hulk is absolutely detestable for a multitude of reasons, and I couldnt be happier about it. By tapping into some very real political attitudes, this villainous version of Bruce Banner is supremely unlikable in a way that makes you want to keep reading just to know how hell get his comeuppance.
For me, The Ultimates #6 by Deniz Camp, Juan Frigeri, Federico Blee, and Travis Lanham really bumps up the Hulk to one of the most despicable villains of the entire Ultimate line simply by spotlighting his attitude towards the titular heroes. I'm not complaining about this attitude - not at all.
In fact, its a testament to the skill of the creative team and particularly Camp, who injects the Hulk with a perfectly detestable faade of self-righteousness. This Hulk is a supposed pacifist who talks about lofty ideals...

This last year, Marvel completely proved me wrong by bringing back an initiative I didnt think would ever properly return in the form of the Ultimate Universe. Mainstream comics publishers try a lot of different things, and sometimes you just go "thats not going to work," but Im more than happy to have been proven wrong.
I really didnt think that Marvels new Ultimate Universe would be a success - right up until it was. The original Ultimate Universe, beginning with 2000s Ultimate Spider-Man #1 by Brian Michael Bendis, Mark Bagley, Art Thibert, Steve Buccellato, and Richard Starkings, re-imagined Marvels mythos as though they began in the then-present moment. For Spidey, this meant that Peter Parker was a recognizably nerdy teen dealing with the teen issies of the early 2000s. For other books, it meant interacting directly with real politics.

Marvel Comics recently opened up its ever-expanding multiverse even more with the launch of an all-new Ultimate Universe (aka Earth-6160). This version is completely different from the original Ultimate Universe of Earth-1610, though the two are connected in a most diabolical way. The Maker (aka the evil Reed Richards from Earth-1610) traveled to Earth-6160 and used time travel to mold it to his liking. The result is a new continuity rife with exciting stories and powerful heroes. However, some heroes are certainly stronger than others.
While the Maker himself is arguably the most powerful person in the new Ultimate Universe (and definitely the most devious), hes neither a hero nor is he even from Earth-6160 at all. Therefore, the Maker is exempt from consideration. However, that still leaves plenty of heroes who were created as a direct result of the Makers meddling, and plenty more who were created in spite of it.

Warning: Spoilers for Ultimate Spider-Man #8Marvel Comics has officially deemed Spider-Man Earths most important hero, and the new Ultimate Universe proves this definitively. A scene in the critically-acclaimed Ultimate Spider-Man series puts all debate to rest as to the hero with the most impact on the Marvel Universe, and that hero is no god, no billionaire, and no alien: he's the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.
Ultimate Spider-Man #8 by Jonathan Hickman, Marco Checchetto, Matt Wilson, and Cory Petit follows up on the previous issues ending, wherein Tony Stark finds Peter to check in on his progress towards becoming a hero. Wally West once updated the Flash costume to escape Barry's shadow. The new, practical uniform is similar to the Flash costume from the Dceu. The Flash's legacy moves forward as Wally honors the past.
The Flash is one of DC Comics most iconic legacies, and few heroes have honored that legacy as well as Wally West himself. Having proven himself the true Fastest Man Alive, Wally spent much of his career as the Scarlet Speedster racing in the footsteps of his mentor, Barry Allen. From the very beginning, the DC Comics Universe has relied not only on its trinity of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, but countless other heroes, team-ups, crossovers, and events. But between the massive team-based books and solo adventures, there lies the real hideen gem: a two-way partnership or dynamic duo, allowing for anything from romance, to political differences, to stories that changed the medium.
DC's heroic partnerships cover a lot of ground, with some being more volatile, while others are simply wholesome. The company continues to experiment with these team-ups, as seen in comic book series like The Brave and the Bold, a title dedicated to unusual and enjoyable partnerships. From best friends fighting crime together, to husband and wife teams against the forces of evil, these are the best, brightest, and most iconic team-ups in DC history.

On September 9, 2024, Eisner Award winning comic artist John Cassaday passed away at the too-young age of 52. He was widely mourned by his industry peers and fans, who never worked with or met Cassaday, have lost any new fruits of his great talent. Before he became an artist, Cassaday studied film in college. Once you know that, his drawing style really clicks into place. Cassaday often drew huge images (both in wide and standard panels), the kind a movie screen demands, and his characters had detailed, photorealistic faces. It's no surprise he broke into comics during the mid-90s, when that style was taking off. If I could compare his work to a fellow artist, it would be Bryan Hitch.
Just as Hitch broke out working with writer Warren Ellis on "The Authority," Cassaday teamed with Ellis for the series "Planetary," published at WildStorm (a DC publishing imprint) from 1999 to 2009 across 27 issues.

Hulk vs Wolverine fanart depicts a gruesome battle where Hulk devours Wolverine's arm in a chilling and brutal portrayal. The artwork draws inspiration from Goya's "Saturn Devouring His Son" and showcases Hulk's god-like power over his foes. While the gruesome cannibalistic aspect may shock fans, similar violent encounters between Hulk and Wolverine have occurred in Marvel Comics.
Hulk vs Wolverine is one of the most iconic match-ups in the history of Marvel Comics. Indeed, fighting the Hulk is how Wolverine was introduced in Marvel lore, in the pages of The Incredible Hulk #180-181, and their battles have only become more intense since then. However, one would be hard-pressed to find a more gruesome depiction of Hulk vs Wolverine than this utterly jaw-dropping fanart, which horrifyingly answers exactly how that fight would really end (and its way too sick for the MCU).

The Fantastic Four's iconic origin was just horrifically rewritten, turning Reed Richards from the leader of a beloved superhero family to the broken sole survivor of an experiment gone wrong. Marvel's new Ultimate Universe depicts a warped version of Marvel's timeline - one in which Reed Richards has become this reality's Doctor Doom. Now, fans get to see the horrifying events that led up to his transformation.
In Ultimates #4, readers finally get to see Doctor Doom's past. Reed's story starts like usual, with him, Susan Storm, her brother Johnny, and Reed's college friend Ben Grimm stealing an experimental craft after the government rescinds funding for Reed's maiden voyage. However, in this world, Johnny burns alive and Sue is damaged on the cellular level, killing both the Storm siblings... and they were the lucky ones.
This new timeline was created by the Maker - a super-genius villain with a major grudge against Reed Richards.

Doctor Doom is truly a Marvel Comics villain like no other, not because hes arguably the smartest person in the universe, and not because hes both a master of science and magic, but because it could be argued that hes not even a villain at all. "Ultimates" is a direct sequel to kick-off mini-series "Ultimate Invasion" by Jonathan Hickman and Bryan Hitch. In "Invasion," the Maker (an evil Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic from the original "Ultimate" universe) creates a new world and rewrites history to...

As we speak, James Gunn and Peter Safran are working to shepherd the DC Comics universe on film. We'll have a better sense of how this new franchise might play out (and whether it's here for the long haul) after "Superman" -- personally directed by Gunn and starring David Corenswet as Superman -- soars into theaters on July 11, 2025.
While DC Films is preparing to introduce a new silver screen Superman, DC Comics is doing the same. This fall, DC is launching a new "Absolute" publishing line. This is, in a nutshell, a reboot for the shared setting of DC Comics (though it will run alongside the original instead of replacing it). Familiar characters will start from the beginning and might turn out very differently than they have before.
Comic writers Scott Snyder and Joshua Williamson are the architects of "Absolute DC." On July 18, 2024, Snyder shared background on the project in his "Our Best Jackett" newsletter.

Marvel just introduced the Giant-Sized Thor - a humongous planet-killer closer to Galactus than the heroic god. This new form has ties to Thor's epic 'Ragnarok' story, when he ascended to his beyond-godlike Rune King form. Giant-Size Thor #1 is coming August 21 from Marvel Comics.
Marvel's Asgardian God of Thunder just took his ultimate form, as Thor becomes a gigantic planet-killer more similar to Galactus than the founding Avenger fans know. Marvel's Giant-Size comics have told crucial new stories for key heroes, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the publisher's iconic 1970s Giant-Size issues. Now, it's Thor's turn, with a story that takes the issue's title way more literally than anyone expected.
In a wild preview of Giant-Size Thor, fans visit an alien world that is under threat of total destruction. However, what initially appears to be a prayer for Thor's help is actually a call for his fellow god...
