Chicago Blackhawks, Bulls, White Sox Reach New Media Partnership With TV and Streaming Options
Image
More details about the local broadcasting arrangements for the three teams will be available in the coming months.

There will officially be a new way to watch the Chicago Blackhawks, Bulls, and White Sox following the 2024 MLB regular season. The three teams are departing the NBC Sports Chicago regional sports network (Rsn), but fans won’t have to worry about reduced access to their games going forward if reporting surrounding the move is accurate. The Athletic offered the first details about the new arrangement for the three teams, which have all agreed to a deal with Standard Media Group to broadcast their non-national games in the Chicago area starting this fall.

Key Details: The deal with Standard will reportedly include broadcast and cable channels, as well as streaming options. The Bulls, Blackhawks, and White Sox see their current deal with NBC Sports Chicago expire in October. Warner Bros. Discovery left...

Chicago Bulls, White Sox Owner Buys Controlling Interest in Stadium Network; Is New Chicago Rsn Coming?
Image
Sinclair Broadcasting Group (Sbg) has enough regional sports network (Rsn) problems on its plate. Its subsidiary Diamond Sports Group — which operates 19 RSNs under the Bally Sports brand — is currently undergoing bankruptcy court proceedings. Given those troubles, it’s not terribly surprising the company has decided to pull away from another of its regional sports ventures.

According to Front Office Sports, Chicago Bulls and White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf has taken majority control of Stadium, the Chicago-based multiplatform sports network featuring exclusive live and on-demand games and events, extensive highlights, classic games, original programming, and daily live studio programming. Reisndorf bought out Sinclair’s stake in Stadium, making his Silver Chalice media company the primary stakeholder in the network.

A source close to the deal told Fos that the new ownership structure will be accompanied by big moves down the line for the channel. Given that the broadcasting deal with NBC Sports...

‘The Last Dance’: How to Watch the Finale of Michael Jordan Docuseries
Image
Since its premiere four weeks ago, ESPN’s “The Last Dance” has captured the attention of basketball fans across the nation as they seek content during a time when professional sports have ground to a halt. The 10-part documentary following NBA legend Michael Jordan and six-time champions the Chicago Bulls will air its final two parts this Sunday on ESPN.

The documentary weaves together archival footage from the 1997-98 NBA season and interviews with Jordan himself, Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf, head coach Phil Jackson and other major NBA figures.

Though “The Last Dance” was originally scheduled to debut in June around the time of the NBA Finals, shutdowns due to the coronavirus pandemic led ESPN to move up the documentary’s premiere. Two new episodes have aired each Sunday since its launch on April 19, building more buzz and positive word of mouth over the past month.

“The Last Dance” will air on ESPN.

‘The Last Dance’ Week 4: Tragedy, Baseball, and the Cost of Being Jordan
Image
In Episodes Seven and Eight of The Last Dance, there are tears. Michael Jordan cries over the shocking loss of his father in 1993. His friend Ahmad Rashad wells up at the memory of tying a trembling Jordan’s tie for him on the day of the funeral. Members of the ’94 Bulls (a team that was Jordan-free as His Airness dabbled in professional baseball) recall a tearful postgame speech by Bill Cartwright. Heck, Jordan’s personal trainer cries while speaking about his number-one client’s intense dedication to his job.

Perhaps most surprising,...

Kobe Bryant Was a TV Star With a Complex Media Legacy
Mark Lazarus was an executive at Turner Broadcasting in the 1990s when the company was the NBA’s sole national cable-tv partner. As such, he had a front-row seat for the hand wringing that occurred when Michael Jordan abruptly left pro basketball in 1993.

“There was a ratings hit,” says Lazarus, who became president of Turner Sports in 1998 and now serves as chairman, NBCUniversal broadcast, entertainment and lifestyle group, sports and news. Jordan was the undisputed face of the league and its top attraction. “Who was going to take that mantle? Who was going to be the next guy up?”

Jordan would return to the game in 1994, then retire again, then un-retire again, then retire again. All the while the succession question loomed. Kobe Bryant, who joined the Los Angeles Lakers in 1996 — when he was 17 years old and the Chicago Bulls began their fifth of six championship runs with Jordan — wasn...

Veteran Chicago White Sox slugger Adam Laroche says he is retiring from the game of baseball after being asked by his team's management not to bring his 14-year-old son, Drake, to the ballpark anymore. On Friday, the Mlb athlete explained on Twitter that his decision to step away from his $13 million contract was the result of a conflict with White Sox Executive Vice President Ken Williams. 'Sport in America: Our Defining Stories': 'Where sports, family and America meet'
As people across the country gather on Thursday to give thanks for family, friends and a shared bounty, a new film from HBO and Sports Illustrated celebrates another mutual American experience.

"Sport in America: Our Defining Stories," debuting Nov. 28 on HBO, examines how the shared thread of sports has united the country over the years and helped shape the national character.

"[The film] is really very much about why sports matters to people in ways that we actually don't realize," explains James D. Stern, who directed the film for Endgame Entertainment. "You know, we talk about our parents, we talk about our kids, we talk about our politics, we talk about race. And all those things we talk about oftentimes through the safety valve of sports.

"This is sort of the intersection where sports and family and America meet," he says to Zap2it.

The 95-minute documentary includes the personal stories of...

While the American Red Cross and Wyclef's Yele Haiti have helped raise funds for relief victims via text messaging, the country's high schools have also been creative when it comes to helping the earthquake-ravaged nation.

Basketball marathons, spin-a-thons and casual dress-down days are just a few of the innovative ways students are raising money for survivors of the devastating earthquake in Haiti.

"The students were very concerned what we could do to support the efforts," Principal Leonard Kassan of the High School for Service & Learning at Erasmus in Brooklyn, New York, told MTV News. "Once it was on television, of course, it opened up the doors for them to...
