Beyoncé and Jay-Z to Compete Against Each Other for an Emmy This Year
Image
Beyoncé is facing some particularly familiar competition for an Emmy this year: her own husband.

As the 2025 Emmy nominations were announced on Tuesday, both Queen Bey and Jay-Z (real name Shawn Carter) were listed as nominees in the outstanding variety special (live) category; Beyoncé for her Beyoncé Bowl halftime show for the NFL’s Christmas Day game on Netflix, and Jay as one of the executive producers for Kendrick Lamar’s Apple Music Super Bowl Lix Halftime Show.

It’s hard to track how many times a husband and wife have ever competed against one another in the same Emmy category in the past, though it’s certainly not a common occurrence.

Both Beyoncé and Lamar’s halftime shows were critically lauded and groundbreaking. Beyoncé performed the first-ever Christmas Day NFL halftime show, while Lamar broke records for the most-viewed Super Bowl halftime show of all time with over 133 million viewers.

Emmys’ Music Nominations: Father-Daughter Duo Thomas and Julia Newman Make History; Hans Zimmer Could Finally Score a Win
Image
A father-daughter composing team was nominated, Hans Zimmer could win his first Emmy, and a music supervisor was nominated for three different shows — just some of the surprises among nominations for the 2024-2025 Emmys unveiled Tuesday morning by the Television Academy.

Thomas Newman and his daughter Julia Newman were nominated for their music for Netflix’s miniseries “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” a first in Emmy history for a two-generation, same-family collaboration on a single television score. And in another musical-family story, Oscar and Emmy winner Michael Giacchino’s son Mick Giacchino was nominated for his original music for HBO’s “The Penguin.”

Zimmer, who has two Oscars and four Grammys, has never won an Emmy but could this year with his nomination in the documentary music category for NBC’s “The Americas” (shared with fellow composers Anze Rozman and Kara Talve).

Music supervisor Gabe Hilfer dominated the...

How the ’Andor’ Score Went for Maximum Strength While ‘The Studio’ Composer Acted Solo
Image
Sometimes it takes a 60-piece orchestra to effectively score a series; sometimes it takes just a single musician.

Those extremes are illustrated by two of this season’s most popular shows: the Apple TV+ satirical series “The Studio,” whose innovative percussion score is the work of Antonio Sanchez; and the acclaimed Disney+ drama “Andor,” which concludes the “Star Wars” origins-of-the-Rebellion saga with new music by Brandon Roberts.

Sanchez’s one-man band is a fun element of the Hollywood showbiz sendup “The Studio.” He didn’t know showrunners Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg prior to this, but it turned out they were using his all-drums score for the 2014 film “Birdman” as a temporary soundtrack for “The Studio” and liking what they were hearing.

“They sent me the first episode, and I could see that what was working for them was the percussion, the timing and the rhythm,” Sanchez says. His years...

How ‘The Studio’ Composer Created ‘Wall-to-Wall’ Music and Set Out to Prove He Wasn’t a ‘One-Trick Pony’ After ‘Birdman’
Image
Before composer Antonio Sanchez officially came on board to score “The Studio,” the new Hollywood satire show from Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, the episodes were already using his “Birdman” score as temp music.

So when Sanchez sat down with Rogen and Goldberg, it only took about 15 minutes of chatting before they were sold on working together. “The one thing that ‘Birdman’ brought is the impression that maybe I’m a little bit of a one-trick pony because it was a four-time Oscar winning movie. So people think of me and they just think drums,” Sanchez tells Variety.

Working on “The Studio,” then, became the perfect opportunity for Sanchez to show off more of his range.

Sanchez got started right away on the music for Continental Studio’s films, expanding his soundscape to horns, strings and percussion across all ten episodes. As someone who was brought up as a jazz musician,...

Hans Zimmer’s ‘Dune: Part Two’ score wins at the Grammys after being disqualified at the Oscars
Image
Hans Zimmer‘s Dune: Part Two score beat the odds on Sunday to win the Grammy Award for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media. The victory comes after the Oscars declared the score ineligible because it contained too much music carried over from Dune: Part One. Denis Villeneuve‘s epic sequel to his adaptation of Frank Herbert‘s 1965 book did end up receiving five Oscar nominations: picture, sound, production design, cinematography, and visual effects.

Zimmer, who wasn’t present to accept his award, now has five Grammys in his illustrious career. He previously won for scoring The Dark Knight, Crimson Tide, and The Lion King, plus the “Circle of Life” song from the latter.

This isn’t the first time an Oscar-disqualified soundtrack went on to win the Grammy. Antonio Sánchez‘s score for Birdman was likewise ruled ineligible at the Oscars but claimed the Grammy in 2015.

Challengers, the hit film starring Zendaya,...

Was Birdman Actually Filmed In One Shot?
Image
Birdman not only has an impressive cast but also an impressive production, as it appears to have been filmed in one continuous shot. In 2014, the dark comedy-drama Birdman took the audience by surprise with its story, cast, and visual style. Directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, Birdman counts on the talents of Michael Keaton, Emma Stone, Edward Norton, Andrea Riseborough, and many others. Birdman was a critical and commercial success, as well as a hit during the awards season, taking the Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Cinematography.

Birdman tells the story of Riggan Thomson (Keaton), an actor best known for playing a superhero named Birdman in the late 1980s/early 1990s. However, Thomson’s career has faded through the years, and he is looking to revive his career by writing, directing, and starring in a Broadway play. Throughout Birdman, Thomson is tormented by the...

Ryuichi Sakamoto, Composer Known For The Revenant And The Last Emperor, Dies At 71
Image
Oscar-winning Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, who created the original scores for Bernardo Bertolucci's "The Last Emperor" and Alejandro G. Iñárritu's "The Revenant," has died at the age of 71. Sakamoto had been undergoing treatment for stage 4 cancer since June 2020, and his death on March 28, 2023, was announced via his official Twitter account and that of the record label he founded, Commmons.

The statement from Commmons notes that Sakamoto "continued to create works in his home studio whenever his health would allow. He lived with music until the very end." It concludes by sharing one of Sakamoto's favorite sayings: "Ars longa, vita brevis."

"The Last Emperor" swept the Oscars in 1988, winning in every category including Best Original Score, for which Sakamoto was nominated alongside collaborators David Byrne and Cong Su. "The Revenant" also led the pack at the 2016 Academy Awards, nominated in twelve categories and winning three. However, Sakamoto's score was...

Song You Need to Know: Antonio Sanchez, ‘Bad Hombres y Mujeres’
Like countless other Americans, drummer Antonio Sanchez was appalled by the anti-Mexican rhetoric Donald Trump spewed during his presidential campaign. On his 2017 album, Bad Hombre, the Mexico City–born jazz artist — best known for his groundbreaking solo-percussion score to 2015 Best Picture winner Birdman, as well as his extensive work with Pat Metheny — took one of Trump’s most infamous phrases as its title, turning bigotry into empowerment.

“ad hombres are, by his definition, Mexicans — mainly Mexicans — and Latinos that are rapists and are criminals,” Sanchez told Southern California Public Radio’s The Frame....

Song You Need to Know: Makaya McCraven, ‘Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds’
Louis Armstrong in Jazz (2001)
Jazz, like many other genres, has a long history with the Beatles’ songbook. Since the Sixties, artists from Count Basie to Medeski Martin & Wood have covered a wide array of Fab Four tunes. A new release, A Day in the Life: Impressions of Pepper, brings this concept into the present: It’s a full album cover of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, featuring 12 contemporary jazz artists tackling the immortal LP’s 13 tracks. (Drummer Antonio Sanchez, who realized Birdman’s stunning solo-percussion score a few years back, performs both...

'Birdman' Drum Score, Disqualified From Oscars, Nabs Grammy Nomination
Birdman has landed on this year's list of Grammy nominations. The drum-centric score from Antonio Sanchez nabbed a nod in the Grammy category for best score soundtrack for visual media. Also nominated in the category are works by Alexandre Desplat for The Imitation Game, Hans Zimmer for Interstellar, Johann Johannsson for The Theory of Everything and Justin Hurwitz for Whiplash. Sanchez's nomination comes a year after the composer's work for the Alejandro G. Inarritu film was deemed ineligible for Oscar consideration, a disqualification made because its soundtrack includes pieces of classical music in addition to Sanchez's score. "It was felt that the

Anniversaries: Pat Metheny Born 61 Years Ago
Happy birthday to Pat Metheny (born August 12, 1954), one of the few jazz superstars of the past four decades to combine commercial success and critical plaudits. After paying his dues in Gary Burton's band (which he joined at age 19), Metheny put out his first album in 1976 and by the time of his third release two years later was gaining crossover radio play. Though the style of his eponymous band was smooth and tuneful, Metheny had a firm basis in jazz and straight-ahead guitarist gods such as Jim Hall (with whom he eventually recorded a fine duo album).

With success came the challenge of avoiding complacency, which Metheny has met masterfully with a wide-ranging series of albums in a variety of stylistic bags, from atonal skronk to mellow Brazilian, from thorny Ornette Coleman covers to mercurial bebop. Along the way he has lent his prestige to both respected elders (Hall, Burton, Coleman,...

Birdman | Blu-Ray Review
Taking home four Oscars out of its nine nominations, including Best Picture, Director, Original Screenplay and Cinematography, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s Birdman was the big winner at this year’s Academy Awards. Premiering last August at the Venice Film Festival (where it left with trio of minor awards), cinematography has long been the awards season lock for the film (winning Lubezki a BAFTA), and it’s picked up a pair of Golden Globes (Screenplay and Actor) and a host of critic’s choice awards. Box office has also been profitable, opening last October in limited release before expanding nationwide Mid-November to successful box office results—its Best Picture win will most likely edge it over or close to the one hundred million mark.

Not only is Birdman (or The Virtue of Ignorance) arguably the best film of Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s impressive filmography (from a list that includes Amores Perros,...

Birdman, Whiplash and the sound of drums
Birdman and Whiplash are both enhanced by their percussion-laden scores. We dig into the music of both of them...

This article contains spoilers for Birdman and Whiplash (including Whiplash's ending)

What makes a great drummer?

That's the question asked by Whiplash, which was up for Best Picture at the Oscars (although ultimately, as you more than likely know, didn't prevail). Damien Chazelle's thriller - easily the most exciting (and horrifying) account of music practice in cinema history - goes head to head with Birdman, another percussion-heavy flick. While the two share an instrument, though, their answers to that question couldn't be more different.

For Whiplash, it mostly seems to boil down to one thing: how quickly can you drum? The opening track of the album makes that clear, as we hear a snare drum banged repeatedly by Andrew (Miles Teller), faster and faster. "Can someone clean the blood off my drum kit?...

Edward Norton, Zach Galifianakis, Amy Ryan, Naomi Watts, Emma Stone, and Andrea Riseborough in Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014)
"Birdman," the awards season juggernaut with nine Academy Awards nominations, has an easily recognizable and entrancing drum score. Imagine hearing that score live during a screening of the film. That's what composer Antonio Sanchez does at the Ace Theater in Los Angeles.  The idea fits the style of the film, which is near-complete one shot the entire duration. Hearing the score live only adds to that unique experience.  Hear from Sanchez and star Michael Keaton about this technique in the video below.  Read More: Indiewire's Final Oscar Predictions in Every Single Category (aka How to Win Your Oscar Pool)...

Michael Keaton Intros Live Birdman Performance by Composer Antonio Sanchez At Screening
Check out video & photos from Thursday evening’s Birdman performance by composer/drummer Antonio Sanchez with an introduction by Michael Keaton at the Ace Hotel.

Making the unique choice for the Birdman soundtrack, director Alejandro G. Iñárritu went with an almost total drum score by the four-time Grammy Award winner.

Read my interview with Sanchez here.

Known for creative fearlessness and a meticulous approach to their craft, actors Michael Keaton (Batman, Beetlejuice, Jackie Brown) and Edward Norton (25Th Hour, American History X, Fight Club) will appear at AFI Fest for a very special discussion covering their unconventional careers. Keaton and Norton co-star in Alejandro González Iñárritu‘s current release, Birdman Or (The Unexpected Virtue Of Ignorance).

Birdman or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance is a black comedy that tells the story of an actor (Michael Keaton) – famous for portraying an iconic superhero – as he struggles to mount a Broadway play.

Michael Keaton stops by Antonio Sanchez's live performance of his 'Birdman' score
Edward Norton, Zach Galifianakis, Amy Ryan, Naomi Watts, Emma Stone, and Andrea Riseborough in Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014)
Awards season has its pluses and minuses, but if you live in New York or Los Angeles you can be a part of some very special events that wouldn't happen without the Oscar spotlight. On the same night that Best Documentary frontrunner "Citizenfour" was the subject of a TimesTalk in New York with director Laura Poitras, Glenn Greenwald and Edward Snowdown via Google Hangout (sadly, it was also the last public appearance by David Carr), Fox Searchlight held a special screening of "Birdman" at the Ace Hotel Theater in Los Angeles.   What made this different from the hundreds of "Birdman" screenings to date was that composer and drummer Antonio Sanchez performed his score in front of a live audience. Best Actor nominee Michael Keaton was also on hand to introduce Sanchez and it had to be a redemptive moment for the jazz drummer, whose work was deemed ineligible by the...

Jazz Review Roundup
I didn't have enough free time in 2014 to review nearly as many of last year's prolific output of fine jazz albums as I wanted to. Here's a small step toward catching up, plus two 2015 releases (Ligeti/McDonas, The Side Project Saxophone 4tet).

Tom Varner: Nine Surprises (Tom Varner Music)

Composer and French horn player Tom Varner is indeed full of surprises, and they are not confined to the suite of that name (which, surprisingly, has 15 movements). I was most surprised by the outburst of New Orleans jazz in the last piece on the CD, "Mele," which Varner calls "a Gil Evans-influenced variation on the harmonic structure of a pop Hawaiian Christmas song." In general the music here seems highly composed -- these are not heads with strings of solos -- but still allowing for improvisation. The soloists who make the biggest impression are trombonist David Marriott and, no surprise here,...

The 2014 RopeofSilicon Movie Awards
The 2014 RopeofSilicon Movie Awards It's hard to believe I've been doing my own brand of "awards" for seven years now. Perhaps because film awards seem to have grown increasingly irrelevant, but when you watch as many movies as I do per year it is nice to sit back and remember the finer moments of the past year, especially when we're stuck in the doldrums of the early year releases, dealing with the likes of Jupiter Ascending, Taken 3, Blackhat and Seventh Son. So, as we are now only a few weeks away from the 87th Annual Academy Awards, it's time to hand out the 2014 RopeofSilicon Movie Awards, looking back on a year that turned out to be much better than it initially appeared it may be. A hard question I'm trying to answer is just what kind of year in movies was 2014c Like previous years, blockbusters came and went.

The 2015 BAFTA Awards have been revealed and if you're of the group that believes they hold any kind of influence over the Oscars or serve as any kind of predictor, well, you may be moving Boyhood back to the top line of your Best Picture and Director predictions as Richard Linklater's twelve-year project took home three wins including Best Picture, Director and Supporting Actress, though it was The Grand Budapest Hotel, which lead the nomination field with 11 noms, that lead all winners taking home five awards, all below the line outside of the win for Best Original Screenplay. Personally I'm not ready to move Birdman below Boyhood in either Picture or Director as it only took home one award, Best Cinematography for Emmanuel Lubezki, though one interesting category to keep an eye on is Best Actor at the Oscars as the precursors suggest it will be Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything...

The 2015 Ee BAFTA Awards were handed out in London Sunday night and while the broadcast aired hours later in the United States, it didn't stop us from chronicling the twists and turns of a show often seen as a bellwether for the Academy Awards. It took home only three BAFTAs, but "Boyhood" was the biggest winner of the night as it won Best Film and Richard Linklater earned Director honors. "The Grand Budapest Hotel" took home five statues including Original Screenplay for Wes Anderson, Production Design, Costumes, Original Music and Make Up & Hair. "Whiplash" earned three BAFTAs including J.K. Simmons for Supporting Actor, Editing and a somewhat surprising win in Sound. Expected Oscar winners Julianne Moore took Leading Actress and Patricia Arquette took Supporting Actress. Eddie Redmayne earned a key win over rival Michael Keaton by claiming the Lead Actor BAFTA for "The Theory of Everything." The latter also won...

"Birdman": 'The Good, The Bad and The Ugly'
From The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.Ca, Sneak Peek 'the good, the bad and the ugly' in "Birdman", starring Michael Keaton, Edward Norton and Emma Stone:

Michael Stevens For 'The Good':

"'Birdman' aka 'The Unexpected Virtue Of Ignorance' hurtles along as if in flight, with a single cinematic take, soaring over, under and around the inner demons haunting 'Riggan Thomson' (Michael Keaton) , a grizzled film actor turned stage director, eager to rebuild his reputation in the theater world ...

"...after famously portraying the iconic movie superhero 'Birdman'.

"The funny, clever script shows how vain, fragile and bird-brained actors can be, as they go through the hollow motions of life, when their true calling is in performance...

"...with a convincing ensemble cast, bopping along to a jittery jazz drum score by Antonio Sanchez...

"'Birdman' is a unique satirical feature, that kept me on the edge,...

2014 in Review: Elizabeth's Top Scores/Movie Music
I made up this list before the Oscar nominations (grr) came out, and strangely enough, none of my picks for Best Score received a nod, even the one I assumed was a sure thing. Nevertheless, some movies this year featured phenomenal music, and I'd like to recognize them here.

I'll repeat my standards from a 2010 post: "The best film score complements the film perfectly and doesn't distract from the action onscreen, but is still distinct enough to stand on its own. Shoddy film music can ruin a movie (for me, at least), but a great film score serves to make a good movie even better."

5. Birdman, Antonio Sanchez

It seemed a given that, along with the other recognition this frenetic film received from the Academy, the percussion score would make the cut, but alas. The music by Sanchez adds so much to the Michael Keaton film (frankly, it's the only...

I Love Attending the Critics' Choice Movie Awards!
David Oyelowo was relaxed at the Critics' Choice Movie Awards held last night at the Hollywood Palladium. The whole world was surprised with his Oscar snub but the actor, who gave one of the best performances of 2014 as Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in "Selma," seemed to not mind. He remembered me from our red carpet interview when "Selma" opened the Palm Springs International Film Festival. As soon as Oyelowo saw me, he asked, "Palm Springs right?," so...we took a selfie!

That was always the mood at any of the Critics' Choice Movie Awards I've attended. Being a proud voting member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association, we hand out the Critics' Choice Movie Awards annually and it's the awards show I always look forward to attending each year.

Common, who, together with John Legend won Best Original Song at the Critics' Choice with the fantastic "Glory" from "Selma" was also in high spirits.

'Force Majeure' director breaks down after missing Oscar nomination
Steven Spielberg at an event for The 79th Annual Academy Awards (2007)
One of the best pieces of Oscar-related video is the footage of Steven Spielberg watching the nominees be revealed in 1975. Spielberg's "Jaws" was up for tons of awards, of course, but one of them — shockingly — was not Best Director. As Spielberg watched every name but his be called, he held his head in his hands and looked on with disbelief. "I got beaten out by Fellini" and the documented hand-wringing over the miss lived on in infamy. Making the rounds today is a video blog of "Force Majeure" producer Erik Hemmendorff and Ruben Östlund watching the Best Foreign Language Film nominees be unveiled. Östlund's reaction moves from gleeful acceptance to anger to silence to off-screen weeping. Given that the film is very much about male ego and features a similar scene where a man breaks down into hysterics, the question has arisen as to whether it's a staged joke. I...

Birdman was lauded with seven gongs at this year's Critics' Choice Movie Awards.

Lead actor Michael Keaton scored two of the awards for Actor and Actor in a Comedy, while the movie also won in the Acting Ensemble, Score, Original Screenplay, Editing and Cinematography categories.

However, the Alejandro González Iñárritu-directed black comedy was unable to beat Boyhood to the Picture award.

The coming-of-age drama had the second highest number of awards in total, which included Director for Richard Linklater, Supporting Actress for Patricia Arquette and Young Actor/Actress for Ellar Coltrane.

The Grand Budapest Hotel followed suit with three awards for Comedy, Art Direction and Costume Design, while Guardians of the Galaxy took two with Action Movie and Hair & Make-up.

2015 Critics Choice Awards Winners Topped by 'Boyhood' and 'Birdman'
Birdman led the field heading into tonight's 2015 Critics Choice Awards with 13 total nominations followed by The Grand Budapest Hotel with 11 nominations, and Boyhood with eight. Of course, following this morning's 2015 Oscar nominations all eyes were on the Critics Choice Awards to see how this awards season will continue to flow. Some were already declaring the Oscars irrelevant, bypassed by the likes of the more diverse list of nominees at both the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards as the Oscars failed to nominate Selma and saw a list of acting nominees dominated by all-white actors. Personally, I think people are looking to blame the Academy for overall industry ills, but I guess there is some level of importance to be placed on being the organization to move the dial. Is that by nominations alonec How much do winners matterc That's probably a question best left for another time, as for tonight's awards.

Critics’ Choice Movie Awards Winners: The Complete List
Edward Norton, Zach Galifianakis, Amy Ryan, Naomi Watts, Emma Stone, and Andrea Riseborough in Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014)
Just as it made a strong showing in the Oscar nominations Thursday morning, “Birdman” was the front-runner with the most nominations for the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards Thursday night. It also ended the night with the most trophies, taking home seven, including both Best Actor and Best Actor in a Comedy for Michael Keaton, Best Acting Ensemble, and Best Editing — the film was shot to look as if it was a single continuous take.

“Boyhood” followed with four awards, including two of the biggest honors of the night: Best Picture and Best Director for Richard Linklater. The film’s star...

Edward Norton, Zach Galifianakis, Amy Ryan, Naomi Watts, Emma Stone, and Andrea Riseborough in Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014)
Hey everyone! We've been up working almost non-stop since 5:30 Am for the Academy Award nominations and haven't napped yet.  That means it's time to live-blog the 2015 Critics' Choice Awards right?  Who's excited?  Anyone got an over/under for a "Lego Movie" or "Dick Poop" call out?  In case you forgot who was nominated, check out this year's honorees here. 6:00 Pm - The show has started and host Michael Strahan is doing some 'Magic Mike Xxl' themed intro number.  Whoever thought this was a good idea should probably not come back to the show next year.  Strahan explains who the Bfca (the Broadcast Film Critics Association) is without saying those words.  Strahan tries to joke with some of the nominees in the audience.  We're not sure this is working.  Strahan wants a "Birdman-Strahan" sequel.  Whew, we're cutting to a 2014 in review montage. 6:05 Pm - Strahan goes...

Soundtracking: 87th Academy Awards
Thursday morning provided its share of surprises and snubs, but the Academy’s musical branch took a pretty clear anti-star stance in the Best Song category.

One year after the likes of U2, Pharrell Williams and Arcade Fire dominated the music categories, Oscar’s Best Song voters left big names like Lorde, Lana Del Rey and Patti Smith out of contention.

The biggest names in Best Song, instead, come from Selma’s entry into the category: “Glory” performed by John Legend and Common. Because the Academy enjoys formality the pair’s given names - John Stephens (Legend) and Lonnie Lynn (Common) - can now be added to the collective trivia file.

The song was one of just a pair of nominations for the historical drama, but having just won the Golden Globe in the same category, it begins the race as the front-runner.

The rest of the song entries run the gamut,...

Tech Support: Final predictions in Oscar's crafts categories
Benedict Cumberbatch in The Imitation Game (2014)
Over the past three and a half months, we have previewed the races in all Oscar categories and spoken with many of the leading contenders. For the ninth year here at Tech Support, it's now time to put all of that aside and put forward final predictions. Which craftsmen and craftswomen will be cited by their peers on Thursday? Best Cinematography Emmanuel Lubezki looks in fantastic position to earn his second straight statuette for his very, very long takes on "Bidman." Robert Yeoman and Dick Pope have earned guild, Bfca and BAFTA nods for their gorgeous period work that blurred the line between camera work and the painted and crafted arts on "The Grand Budapest Hotel" and "Mr. Turner" respectively. The former will likely rack up a host of nods while this is a perfect chance to recognize Pope’s collaborations with Leigh. They’re in good shape. Roger Deakins missed a BAFTA nod,...

Boyhood named best picture at Critics’ Choice Award
Edward Norton, Zach Galifianakis, Amy Ryan, Naomi Watts, Emma Stone, and Andrea Riseborough in Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014)
The Broadcast Film Critics Association (Bfca) bestowed further glory on IFC Films’ coming-of-age drama on the day of Oscar nominations as the film collected best picture, director, supporting actress and young actor honours.

Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel, which led Thursday’s (January 15) Academy Awards nominations roster on nine apiece, also figured in the 20th Annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards in Hollywood.

The former collected the most nominations of the night with seven, among them best actor for Michael Keaton, acting ensemble, original screenplay, cinematography, editing, score and actor in a comedy.

Keaton became the first person in the 20-year history of the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards to win three prizes in a single night for best actor, actor in a comedy and part of the Birdman ensemble.

The Grand Budapest Hotel earned three awards for best comedy, art direction and costume design.
