Fantastic Four: 10 starting points for newcomers to Marvel’s First Family
Image
After years of waiting, Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four: First Steps is now in theaters. Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will finally see what Vanessa Kirby (Sue Storm), Pedro Pascal (Reed Richards), Joseph Quinn (Johnny Storm), and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Ben Grimm) can bring to the table. That, plus there’s Julia Garner as the Silver Surfer / Shalla-Bal and Ralph Ineson as Galactus the Eater of Worlds.

If you’re not familiar with Marvel’s First Family (who debuted way back in 1961), there are decades worth of comic books to read. However, you may not have the time to go through over 700 comic books. That’s not including the Future Foundation and the random plethora of one-shots, crossover tie-ins, and more. Instead of having to dig too far into the past, here are ten great starting points for you to get into the Fantastic Four.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps Delivers Two Of The McU's Most Harrowing Scenes During Its Finale - Spoilers
Image
We've already broken down The Fantastic Four: First Steps' ending, but there are a couple of moments during the final act that rank among the McU's most harrowing scenes.

In the final battle, each member of the superhero family attempts to slow down Galactus' march to the Baxter Building. However, when the Devourer of Worlds gets his hands on Mister Fantastic, he begins stretching Reed to his breaking point.

The genius screams in pain as he comes close to being torn apart, and it's only The Thing and the Human Torch's intervention that saves him from a pretty diabolical fate (if you're eager to see what that looks like, you can find out here).

What's interesting about this sequence is that it confirms the McU's Mister Fantastic has limitations to his powers and can't stretch in quite the same near-endless way as his comic book counterpart. Whether that's a good or bad thing is debatable,...

Superman And Batman's Combined 'Superbat' Design Returns to DC Comics Canon
Image
Warning! Spoilers ahead for Justice League Unlimited #9!

The coolest hero that combines both Superman and Batman has just returned, and they still have one of the best outfits in DC Comics canon. After the events of "We Are Yesterday", DC's timeline is broken, upending everything for DC’s heroes and bringing back someone that fans thought they’d never see again.

In Justice League Unlimited #9 by Mark Waid and Dan Mora, the League is still dealing with a swath of time-displaced heroes. Green Lantern is keeping an eye on the League's guests, noting which ones are being disappeared back to their proper periods. But the one hero he really takes offense to is Superbat and his Lantern powers.

The League is then joined by the Time Trapper and the World Forger, who have come to dissect Grodd to remove the Omega energy stored in Grodd’s body. The heroes refuse...

The DC Hero That Rachel Brosnahan Wants To See In A Superman Sequel
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

This article contains spoilers for "Superman."

The casting for the James Gunn-directed "Superman" is as strong as a Kryptonian, which is one of the reasons the film leaps and soars. David Corenswet is the kind of charming Superman should be, Nicholas Hoult is the most accurate Lex Luthor in a movie to date, and Rachel Brosnahan is a snappy, hard-nosed, and kick-butt Lois Lane.

When all three of these actors spoke to Total Film recently, bouncing ideas around for the sequel, Brosnahan dropped one item on her wish list: Wonder Woman. "There's some storied history between Lois and Wonder Woman," she noted.

Well, good news! (Maybe?) Recent reporting by Variety says that Warner Bros. is fast-tracking the new Wonder Woman movie, though a "Superman" sequel hasn't been locked-in just yet. If there is one though, it'll almost assuredly be...

Mr. Terrific is Already Getting A Major Promotion After His Superman Movie Performance
Image
There’s no denying that Edi Gathegi’s Mister Terrificstole the show in James Gunn’sSuperman, quickly becoming a fan favorite. Audiences loved seeing this underrated hero finally get the spotlight he deserved, and now, Mister Terrific is leveling up in a big way with a major promotion that’s set to raise his profile even higher.

Thanks to James Gunn’s creative vision and Edi Gathegi’s incredible performance, Mister Terrific is now a name even casual DC fans recognize.

Although Michael Holt first debuted as Mister Terrific in The Spectre #54 (1997) by John Ostrander and Tom Mandrake, he never quite reached the same status as icons like Superman, Batman, or other core Justice League members. That may finally be changing after his standout live-action debut and a major development in the comics, where Holt is now set to lead a new superhero team: the Terrific Ten.

The first character...

DC is Repeating Its Disastrous 'Flashpoint' - With The 1 Hero Who Can Make It Even Worse
Image
Flashpoint delivered one of the darkest and most brutal versions of the DC Universe ever put to page, reimagining heroes like the Flash and Batman in grim, unthinkable ways. It served as a powerful ‘what-if’ worst-case scenario. But now, DC is proving that things can get even worse with the announcement of their next timeline-shattering event: Impulsepoint.

The Flash #26 by Mark Waid and Christopher Cantwell, with art by Vasco Georgiev, will see Wally West’s Flash and Bart Allen’s Impulse take center stage during the Flash-centric chapter in DC’s upcoming K.O. event.

As Scott Snyder, one of the architects behind the event, describes it, “DC K.O. [will be] a knock-down, drag-out fight between all your favorite DC super heroes in a cosmic tournament to save the universe from Darkseid.” Amid this chaos, Bart Allen will propose a catastrophic reality reset dubbed Impulsepoint.

DC’s Next Big Publishing Event Revealed as Superhero Slugfest ‘DC K.O’ (Exclusive)
Image
After setting sales records and rebounding from an impending industry downturn in 2024, punchy DC is hoping to continue the momentum by stepping into the ring for its next big publishing event.

Scott Snyder, the writer behind best-selling sensation Absolute Batman, and Joshua Williamson, who writes Superman, are the co-architects of what is being called DC K.O., the story initiative that will debut this fall and run through a main book as well as ripple out through various titles across the DC Universe.

Javi Fernández (Batman & Robin, King Spawn) will draw the main series that is being described as a slugfest to end all slugfests.

“DC K.O. is a knock-down, drag-out fight between all your favorite DC super heroes in a cosmic tournament to save the universe from Darkseid,” said Snyder in a statement.

‘Superman’ Reading List: 12 Comics to Read After the Movie
Image
It’s been more than 80 years since Superman flew off the pages of “Action Comics #1,” and introduced readers to the then-described “Champion of the Oppressed.” The hero has gone on thousands of adventures since his 1930s debut — “Action Comics” alone celebrated its thousandth issue in 2018.

James Gunn’s “Superman” feels like some of these comics flew off the page, adapting everything beautiful, inspiring and outright goofy about the Man of Steel. If you left “Superman” wanting more, check out some of these stories that inspired the Dcu debut.

This list will have no spoilers for “Superman” (2025). If it wasn’t in a trailer, it won’t be mentioned here.

“All-Star Superman” by Grant Morrison, Frank Quitely

“All-Star Superman” should be thought of as the comic book equivalent of the Christopher Reeve/Richard Donner “Superman” movie: there’s nothing quite like it, and it set an immovable gold standard going forward.

James Gunn's Superman Movie Makes A Controversial Change (But It's Not The First Time)
Image
This article contains major spoilers for "Superman."

Superheroes have existed as a genre unto themselves for nearly a century, so naturally, they've undergone storytelling permutations. There's a big difference between the open-hearted sincerity of the Golden Age of comics and the postmodern deconstructionist likes of "Watchmen," the "Dark Knight" trilogy, and "Man of Steel." For the first few decades, the character of Superman was a reliably stalwart bellwether of Good. If he happened to waver from that path temporarily, it was usually some form of Kryptonite that was to blame, and not any character flaw. In Richard Donner's 1978 "Superman," not only was Kal-El (played by Christopher Reeve) portrayed as a true blue guy who never lies in a post-Watergate and Vietnam America, but his parents Jor-El (Marlon Brando) and Lara (Suzannah York) are depicted as pseudo-religious figures, the literal last people on their entire planet to both speak the truth and be wholly selfless.

David Corenswet’s Superman Suit: Expert Details How It Was Made and Its Comic Accuracy
Image
When it comes to Superman, the suit isn’t just fabric; it’s a legacy, a language, and a symbol of myth stitched in thread. And in the latest deep-dive video from Warner Bros. Discovery’s official X account, fans are given an intricate breakdown of how David Corenswet’s 2025 Superman suit was crafted. Not just with high-tech tools, but with decades of comic book DNA. “You will believe a man can fly,” the expert narrates, adding:

That is if he’s wearing one of these incredible Superman suits.

The visual history begins in 1978 with Christopher Reeve’s costume, designed by Oscar-winner Yvonne Blake, who approached the task as a collaborative evolution. Early versions veered off-course with a darker palette and a questionable “S” belt buckle before being reshaped to match the iconic comic-book look fans expected.

Four decades later, enter Corenswet’s iteration, designed by three-time Oscar nominee Judianna Makovsky.

Supergirl's Most Breathtaking Costume Design Is Too Bold For the New Dcu
Image
A piece of utterly mind-blowing fanart has reimagined Supergirl in a suit that fans of Superman might recognize if they are familiar with one iconic Elseworlds story from the 1990s. The Worst Things That Doctor Doom Has Ever Done To The Fantastic Four
Image
Doctor Victor von Doom is the greatest super-villain in Marvel Comics. He's such a great character that it's hard for writers to not use Doom. Hence, he has fought pretty much every major Marvel hero: Doom's fellow armored genius Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, the X-Men (during which times Storm has caught Doom's eye), Black Panther, Captain America, etc.

But von Doom's ire is reserved for the Fantastic Four above all else, especially that accursed Reed Richards. During their days at Empire State University, Doom was building a machine to breach the afterlife and contact his mother Cynthia. Reed warned him his calculations were slightly off but Victor refused to hear him. Then the machine blew up in Doom's face. How badly Doom was scarred by this explosion varies, but he's hidden his face behind an iron mask since. He's also convinced himself that a jealous Reed sabotaged the machine...

Jim Shooter, Teenage Comics Writer Who Revolutionized Marvel as Editor-in-Chief, Dies at 73
Image
Jim Shooter, the comics industry titan who went from teenage writing prodigy to seminal but divisive editor-in-chief for Marvel Comics in the 1980s, has died after a battle with esophageal cancer. He was 73.

His death was announced Monday on Facebook by writer-editor Mark Waid and confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter by his son, Benjamin Shooter.

Shooter came of age in an industry that was both staid and stuck in traditions yet unusually open in a way that a phone call from an editor to a kid could make dreams come true.

He wrote stories that he sent into National Comics — as DC was known at the time — in the mid-1960s when he was in his early teens, prompting an out of the blue phone call from legendary editor Mort Weisinger, who would buy the stories and put Shooter on the payroll. It was a boon for the youngster, who...

Superman & Justice League Fans Devastated by Surprise News, But There’s Still Hope

The Superman and Justice League fandoms were recently thrown into a tizzy over a tweet that was taken out of context and widely misinterpreted. While the future remains uncertain in some respects, the situation is far more hopeful than the “end all” news fans initially feared.

Dan Mora recently announced on Twitter that he will be joining The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman as they take over the next story arc of Image Comics’ Transformers, following the departure of Daniel Warren Johnson and Jorge Corona.

Jim Shooter Dies of Esophageal Cancer: His 5 Best Marvel Comics Including Avengers Secret Wars That You Must Read

Jim Shooter, Comic Book Icon, Passes Away at Age 73
Image
Jim Shooter, the iconic comic book writer who broke into writing comics for DC when he was just 14 years old, and who later became one of the most influential Editors-in-Chief in Marvel history, has died at the age of 73, according to comic book writer, Mark Waid, who noted that Shooter had been suffering from esophogeal cancer for a few years now.

Famously (it was literally the first legend I did as part of Comic Book Legends Revealed), Shooter started writing for DC when he was just 14 years old. As a big comic book fan, he understood that the Marvel Comics of 1964-65 were a good deal sharper than most DC books of the era, so Shooter's idea was to pitch DC on stories that were more like Marvel ones. Really thoughtful idea, right? He also actively looked for a comic book that he felt had the biggest problems with its story,...

Who Created the Justice League? DC Says a Surprising U.S. President Did the Job

The Summer of Superman is what the world needs now
Image
Superman is one of the most argued-about characters in comic book fiction. From “Umm actually, in Injustice…” to “Goku would go Super Saiyan and then…” and also “He is bland. He has too many powers!” which leads to the biggest misconception: “Superman is boring.”

Wrong. That is the simplest way to put it.

To go further, we need to understand why we are getting a new take on Superman this summer with James Gunn's upcoming movie.

Superman has been misrepresented in all the types of media for a few decades now.

It's time to remember who Superman really is

We have had the darker take of Superman's story on the big screen with Man of Steel by Zack Snyder, where Superman snaps Zod's neck to save civilians. Many discussions have happened since then about this take and the DC Extended Universe. The Dceu is no longer around, having suffered numerous box-office failures.

Fantastic Four 2015's Writer Reveals Surprising The Superhero Films That Inspired The Marvel Box Office Flop
Image
Ahead of The Fantastic Four: First Steps' release, Jeremy Slater addressed the failure of the Marvel team's last theatrical outing, Fantastic Four, blaming it on a combination of conflicting creative visions and a changing budget. The film starred Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Jamie Bell, and Michael B. Jordan. Despite featuring a popular lineup of Marvel heroes, Fantastic Four only managed a worldwide gross of $167.8 million against a $120 million budget (via Box Office Mojo). Profit aside, it also failed to strike a chord with critics, earning a 9% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Recently, Slater spoke with ComicBook.com, and unpacked how the film's conflicting references set it up for failure:

Honestly, my biggest tonal reference was The Avengers. It had just come out, either that same summer or the summer before. I f-cking loved it. I thought Joss Whedon did the impossible with that movie and balanced all these tones. I still remember, in the theater,...

Superman Legend Mark Waid Had the Coolest Response After Being Name-Dropped in the Trailer
Image
Many people are looking very forward to James Gunn's Superman. It takes its cues from the original 1979 Superman with Christopher Reeve, but now newcomer David Corenswet is in the title role. He'll go up against Lex Luthor, giant monsters and more while maintaining his romance with ace reporter Lois Lane. And one person in particular is thrilled about the movie - because his name is in it.

Mark Waid is one of the most beloved writers of the Superman comics, and has also contributed stories to other characters who will appear in the new movie, such as Metamorpho. So Gunn and the other creators of the new Superman movie decided it was fitting that Waid should get a tiny shout-out in the trailer - and presumably the movie too. In one scene involving the military, a sign labeled "Waid St." can be seen.

Waid was understandably thrilled about it,...

Daredevil: Born Again Star Charlie Cox Explains Why Divisive Bank Heist Episode Was His "Least Favorite"
Image
Daredevil: Born Again was a hit with fans and critics, but the fifth episode—"With Interest"—proved to be the most divisive. Tonally, it was far more jovial than the rest of the season and felt more like a Mark Waid Daredevil comic than one by Frank Miller or Chip Zdarsky, for example.

In the episode, Matt Murdock finds himself caught up in a bank robbery alongside Ms. Marvel's father, Yusuf Khan. The Man Without Fear helps to take down the robbers, and it's been confirmed that this was the only instalment of Daredevil: Born Again left untouched by the creative overhaul.

Talking to The Playlist, Charlie Cox elaborated on what the series looked like before Dario Scardapane took over as showrunner, and made a startling admission.

"There was one episode we didn’t change at all," the actor started. "It’s the episode in the bank ['With Interest'], and that was...

Superman Prequel Novel Welcome To Metropolis Set To Be Released This June
Image
Superman is only a few months away from arriving in theaters, and it's been confirmed today the movie is getting a prequel novel courtesy of Penguin Random House.

Unfortunately, it will be aimed at younger fans and is only 144 pages in total. There may still be some useful clues about what's to come in the Dcu's version of Metropolis, of course, including what sounds like an early interaction between the Man of Steel and Lex Luthor.

We're expecting plenty more tie-in material to be released ahead of Superman's arrival in theaters this July, with this book likely to be the first of many.

Regardless of the age group the novel has been written for, eager DC fans will likely want to find out as much as possible about the world James Gunn is building, and this book might include a few big hints.

Superman: Comic Book Writer Mark Waid Explains Why Divided World Needs The Man Of Steel In 2025
Image
2025 looks set to be the year of Superman. The first trailer for DC Studios and James Gunn's upcoming Superman movie broke records and, provided the movie strikes a chord with people, it stands a very real chance of being one of the year's biggest hits.

If so, it may put the Man of Steel back on the map. The character is viewed as old-fashioned and out of touch by many, but Fantastic Four and Daredevil writer Mark Waid is among those looking to redefine the hero on the page.

He did that a long time ago by reimagining Clark Kent's origin in the critically acclaimed Superman: Birthright. In more recent years, he's written the current Batman/Superman: World's Finest and Justice League Unlimited series.

Talking to Newsarama, Waid shared his take on why all signs point to Superman being the hero this world needs in 2025.

"I think with all the turmoil going on,...

'Daredevil: Born Again': Every Easter Egg and Reference So Far
Image
Daredevil: Born Again kicked off with a bang, and the latest episode will leave fans talking. The newest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe sees Charlie Cox and Vincent D'Onofrio reprise their roles as Matt Murdock/Daredevil and Wilson Fisk/The Kingpin, respectively, in a continuation of the original Daredevil series. While fans might have been worried given that Daredevil previously went through some of the most iconic Daredevil stories, including "The Elektra Saga" and even put its own spin on the "Born Again" series that the Disney+ series draws its name from, the creators pulled from various corners of the Daredevil universe to craft this latest season.

Daredevil: Born Again features plenty of callbacks and Easter eggs from both the original Daredevil series and comics, but it also features some interesting nods and references to the larger MCU and the various heroes that occupy New York. From The Punisher,...

90 Years Of Canon Will Be Realigned With New History Of The DC Universe
Image
Throughout the vast history of DC Comics, there has been a plethora of reboots to the canon, and exponentially more additions to character's development and backstories. With stories and characters that aren't too far from being one hundred years old, they're bound to get a bit convoluted. Crisis on Infinite Earths, Infinite Crisis, New 52, and Doomsday Clock all rebooted the DC Comics universe to some degree. Multiverse stories that take place outside the main universe and Earth Prime are also considered canon because the multiverse is considered canon. You dive too far into that, and it can definitely become confusing.

Mark Waid is here to set the record straight.

In a new series called New History of the DC Universe, Mark Waid is going to establish exactly what is canon to the heroes we know and love over at DC. He sounds like he's incredibly excited about the project too.
