Shares his name with his grandfather, the legendary Raj Kapoor (his full name was Ranbir Raj Kapoor).

Ranbir Kapoor is a relative of Anil , Boney , Sanjay , Sonam and Arjun Kapoor. His great grandfather Prithviraj Kapoor was a cousin of Surinder Kapoor ( Anil Kapoor 's dad).

His father Rishi Kapoor's brother is Randhir Kapoor, whose wife is Babita Kapoor. Babita's cousin is classic actress Sadhana Shivdasani, whom Ranbir escorted on the ramp of a fashion show for charity in 2014. A cheerful Sadhana wore a beautiful pink sari, while being on the arm of the handsome dapper Ranbir, in what turned out to be her last public appearance. A year-and-a-half later, she died from a high fever. Rishi went to her house to pay his last respects and was touched to see that she had kept a framed picture of her and Ranbir from the fashion show on her nightstand.

Discovered actor Jatin Sial for Aa Ab Laut Chale. Ranbir saw him a in a play and recommended him to his father Rishi Kapoor.
