Kirsten Howard Dec 13, 2017

We chat to writer-director Liam O' Donnell about the process of making both Skyline films, and the future of genre cinema...

Liam O’Donnell wrote and produced the critically-mauled sci-fi hit Skyline in 2010, and he’s spent the better part of a decade working on the well-received follow up film, Beyond Skyline, which also marks his directorial debut. We talked to him about his experiences on both movies, and whether there might be a resurgence of big budget original genre films.

First Look at Sequel Beyond Skyline [Gallery]
Whether you like it or not, Beyond Skyline, the sequel to Colin and Greg Strause’s original alien invasion film, is coming. Taking place at the same time as the original film, but following a new cast of characters, it's the directorial debut of Liam O’Donnell who provided FX work for Iron Man 2. O'Donnell co-wrote the screenplay with Joshua Cordes.

The first images for the sequel have appeared courtesy of the film's official Fb page and they feature none other than Raid alum, Yayan Ruhian and Iko Uwais. From the looks of the first image, the production when with guy-in-suit over CG in some instances which could be cool.

Blu Room: Skyline (Blu-Ray)
Skyline (Blu-Ray)Universal Home ENTERTAINMENT2010/Rated PG-13/Running Time 94 minsList Price: $39.98 – Now AvailableDid anyone really see Avp-R aka Alien vs. Predator: Requiem? I did, in the theaters actually and while I can't say it ranks high up there with any of the films from either monster film franchise, the sequel turned out to be better than I expected. And I wasn't expecting much. Though the film had a ridiculous plot, some terrible performances by a cast being chased by guys in rubber suits and cinematography so bad you couldn't see crap, I'm still amazed that I found Avp-R somewhat enjoyable. Stupid, but stupid fun. Maybe it was because it had some heavy Alien on Predator action or should I say Aliens vs. Predator, since it involved one lone hunter essentially playing a badass against an army of those xenomorphs with acid for bloodAVP-r was a box-office failure,...

This Week in DVD & Blu-ray: The Tourist, Skyline, How Do You Know, Yogi Bear
Yogi Bear (2010)
This Week in DVD & Blu-ray is a column that compiles all the latest info regarding new DVD and Blu-ray releases, sales, and exclusive deals from stores including Target, Best Buy and Fry’s. The Tourist You've heard of crimes of passion. The Tourist is the opposite. It's a film so deprived of spirit or spontaneity that it seems to vanish from existence the moment its credits roll — or at least it would were it not for the spectacularly inane surprise ending, carelessly followed by a wholly inappropriate song selection (by the nonetheless great Muse, who were also weirdly featured in the film's trailer). Both inclusions close an already inert romance caper on a final, "Fuck you, we really don't care." Which is fine, because I didn't either. How could anyone? The movie devotes all of ten minutes to Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie engaging on any level that could be deemed romantic,...

Blu-Ray Review: Skyline – Big and Bold Looking, But it Certainly Isn’t Clever
I know why everyone’s so pissed at what happened with Skyline: it isn’t because the film’s execution didn’t match up to its initial premise, or that every last trickle of creative insight seems to have gone into the special effects to the detriment of everything else; it isn’t even the conspirators’ theory that the film was made in order to prove that any production without the help of a big studio inevitably ends in a poor final product. No. The reason everyone is so angry, and so disgusted with the final film is because the trailer sucker punched us all into thinking it would be great. Well, ok, not great, but an enjoyable man vs aliens romp with impressive looking aliens and stunning special effects.

Thing is, you see, we don’t like being lied to.

So now that the dust has settled a...

Skyline DVD Review
It’s a huge shame that in the week the Super 8 trailer had audiences salivating for the next great disaster film, this week’s two examples have been wholly disappointing. While Battle: Los Angeles has moved viewers to laughter with its sheer pomposity, the DVD release of last year’s Skyline manages to be even worse. There’s little here you’ve not seen before, with multi-ethnic groups huddling for survival as the planet comes under attack from an unpleasant alien force. Where Skyline differs most from the likes of Independence Day or Cloverfield is in its comparative lack of quality.

No-one expects heartbreaking dialogue or stirring performances in a disaster flick but Skyline’s predecessors at least spent a little time on character development, however two-dimensional. Here we’re lumbered with a TV movie cast – Scrubs’ Donald Faison is probably the biggest name; though Sweet Valley High’s...

DVD Review: Skyline
Skyline

Stars: Eric Balfour, Scottie Thompson, David Zayas, Donald Faison, Brittany Daniel, Neil Hopkins | Written By Joshua Cordes, Liam O’Donnell | Directed by Greg and Colin Strause

I thought things were going to be great. The film wastes no time at all in getting started, beaming down those shiny blue lights and turning Mr Balfour’s face all funky when he has a shufty. Then it stops, and throws us back to the previous day, so we can get attached to the characters. The “Getting Attached” sequence has become a cliche of modern genre films. It’s the training montage of certain types of modern horror and sci-fi. I’m so sick and tired of films that insist on having us sit through characters partying, or travelling, or shagging for the first half an hour, simply so we care when they get killed. If I hadn’t been exposed to...

I Finally Watched 'Skyline'
Photo: Universal Studios Home Entertainment I finally watched Skyline last night, even though a few of you warned me not to. Now I understand why.

Skyline is a poorly conceived excuse for a film told in the most simplistic and amateur way possible. To be honest, I don't know how anyone was able to review it without going down the line plot point by plot point. I'm actually upset I didn't live blog the experience, but I'm happy to give a rundown now, and please excuse me if I go on for too long.

The Directors Photo: Universal Studios Home Entertainment

Skyline is directed by sibling duo Colin and Greg Strause (Avpr: Aliens vs Predator - Requiem), or as they are referred to in the credits... "Brothers Strause" which comes across so extraordinarily pretentious. But I guess it's not as bad as it looks. It turns out they decided to...

Skyline producers surprised to hear their movie sucked
Let's face it: Skyline is not a very good movie. It's currently at 14% on Rotten Tomatoes and likely a frontrunner for some Razzies consideration. ‘Skyline’ Producers Floored By Harsh Criticism
The Strause Brothers are still trying to find their stride as filmmakers, but two major movies with mostly negative reviews puts them face to face with a rotten tomato. While they have yet to respond to the criticisms regarding Skyline, the film’s writer/producer combo Liam O’Donnell and Joshua Cordes spoke out recently on the topic.

It is easy for a filmmaker to ignore the general public, but the two seem genuinely disappointed by the overall reaction to their space invasion film. Who wouldn’t be? Skyline is currently scoring a 4.7 on IMDb, 26 on Metacritic and 15% on Rotten Tomatoes. These low numbers are enhanced by a plethora of harsh reviews.

We didn’t necessarily feel the movie lived up to its potential. Even our 2 out of 5 stars review is generous considering the choice…

Exclusive: 'Skyline' Producers Respond to Unkind Critics
Eric Balfour and Donald Faison in Skyline (2010)
Filed under: Celebrity Interviews, Horror, Sci-Fi, Cinematical

Last weekend I saw (and rather enjoyed) 'Skyline,' a throwback-style "aliens attack!" sci-fi/horror flick. The film has problems, but I was rather shocked (and a little chagrined) when I saw the print critics and the onliners pounce on the flick like it was the world's last fish in the world's smallest barrel. I certainly expected some negative reviews -- the film is no classic -- but not the curiously outraged derision that was thrown 'Skyline's' way.

Then one of the filmmakers found me on Twitter; we began chatting about the response to the film, and that leads us here: A frank and candid discussion about the unpleasantness that greeted the theatrical release of, let's face it, an unapologetically silly and entirely matinee-friendly sci-fi monster movie. Our thanks to 'Skyline' writer-producers Liam O'Donnell and Joshua Cordes for participating.

Theatrical Review: Skyline
Rating: 2.5/5

Writers: Joshua Cordes, Liam O’Donnell

Directors: Colin Strause, Greg Strause

Cast: Eric Balfour, Scottie Thompson, Brittany Daniel, Donald Faison

Studio: Universal Pictures

Can there ever be truly too much of a good thing? The genre of alien and alien invasion movies is certainly a saturated market and, at this point, there may not be a whole lot of originality left. Whether or not that sentiment is actually true, you’ll certainly feel that way after watching the Strause brothers’ (Colin and Greg) latest effort, Skyline. What starts out as promising genre flick quickly jumps to ridiculous dialogue, back to incredibly creative effects, and back to ridiculous plot resolutions.

Skyline Review
Skyline Directed by: Colin and Greg Strause Written by: Joshua Cordes, Liam O'Donnell Starring: Eric Balfour, Donald Faison, Brittany Daniel, Scottie Thompson, David Zayas Skyline isn’t quite the penthouse – it’s more like a second floor walk-up. Its lumpy story arc, profusion of vanishing plot elements, and inadvertent humor (second hand smoke) are easy targets for reviewers who only live to snark. So, spoiler alert - no snark in this review (well, maybe just a little). But in spite of these haute cinematique defects, in Skyline, The Brothers Strause (as they would like to be known) earnestly strive to give you an authentic alien invasion experience. Unfortunately, they need human characters to propel the story and engage our emotion. That’s where they come up a little short but, I suspect, not short enough to ruin a nicely detailed alien onslaught for Sf fans. With an excellent SFX resume (X-Men Origins: Wolverine,...

Skyline review
There's a certain myopia in breaking into Buckingham Palace just to steal the pots and pans from the kitchen. It may make the heist cost-effective, but isn't it rather missing the point?

Likewise have the Brothers Strause failed once again to understand what it is about 'stealing' that makes Tarantino, Romero and numerous other Hollywood luminaries so brilliant at it in comparison to the ham-fisted larceny on display in Aliens Vs. Predator: Requiem (2008) and Skyline.

The mind more than boggles at the level of directorial insensitivity that's able to take themes, imagery and scenarios from the likes of Night Of The Living Dead, Cloverfield, The Matrix, District 9, War Of The Worlds and Independence Day and turn it all into an inadequately funded version of Entourage Meets 'V'.

Elaine (Scottie Thompson) and Jarrod (Eric Balfour) are pregnant, though Jarrod doesn't know it as he whisks his girlfriend to the L.

Skyline (2010)
Directed by: Brothers Strause

Written by: Joshua Cordes, Liam O'Donnell

Cast: Eric Balfour, Scottie Thompson, Donald Faison

Whenever the world finally ends, be sure that it's going to be very poor timing for at least some of us.

Elaine and Jarrod arrive in Los Angeles to meet up with Jarrod's newly successful best friend, Terry. Terry has struck it rich in the special effects industry, and the weekend is set up for a huge party. They are welcomed by lots of booze and swimsuits by the pool, followed by binge drinking and bathroom womanizing in the evening. Little do they all know, a gigantic force of extraterrestrial tentacled monstrosities are planning to strike in the early morning - just when their hangovers are beginning to kick in.

The big blue horribles from outer space arrive in force and waste no time in scooping tens of thousands of human beings into...

The invasion begins! Review of the Strause Brother's Skyline
Year: 2010

Directors: Colin Strause, Greg Strause

Writers: Joshua Cordes, Liam O'Donnell

IMDb: link

Trailer: link

Review by: Marina Antunes

Rating: 7 out of 10

While the jury is still out on Jonathan Liebesman's World Invasion: Battle La, the trailers give us a pretty good idea of what to expect but what of Skyline? The little movie that came out of nowhere to generate lots of buzz at Sdcc and which was, later, at the centre of a lawsuit between Sony and Universal, beat the big budget extravaganza out the gate by a few months and the results are mixed.

Directed by the Strause Brothers (of Avpr: Aliens vs Predator – Requiem fame), Skyline employs a quasy story as a backdrop for the real action: an alien invasion. Jarrod and Elaine travel to La to see Jarrod's movie star friend Terry on his birthday. After a night of heavy partying, the group wakes...

Skyline Central - Read the Review, Interviews, and Much More!
After teasing us for a better part of the year, the alien invasion spectacle from the Visual FX mavens Colin and Greg Strause is finally out in theaters, and we've got our official review and more locked and loaded.

Skyline looks and feels like a big summertime Hollywood movie with its storyline, giant-sized special effects and scenes of mass destruction, except - it isn't. The film was self-financed with a 20-person crew and shot entirely at the Strauses' tall apartment building overlooking downtown Los Angeles. And you can quote that bit of trivia to your friends!

Synopsis:

After a late night party, a group of friends are awoken in the dead of the night by an eerie light beaming through the window. Like moths to a flame, the light source is drawing people outside before they suddenly vanish into the air. They soon discover an otherwordly force is swallowing the...

“Skyline” is entertaining for the most part
If you need a film to turn your brain off to and laugh along to then you could do far worse than be entertained by Skyline.

Skyline

Directed by Colin Strause, Greg Strause

Written by Joshua Cordes, Liam O’Donnell

2010, USA

Skyline begins with a pre-credits sequence that looks like it could have been ripped directly from a decidedly average 90’s X-Files episode and culminates in a flurry of muddled CGI that feels more computer game cut-scene (think Resistance or Gears of War) than Hollywood blockbuster.

In between, it largely occupies a place reserved for straight-to-dvd sci-fi /horror fodder: clichéd lead characters – check, limited location spaces – check, ridiculously sincere but hilarious dialogue – check, hell even the camera work is generally decidedly uninspired and forgettable. But there are elements here that obviously strive for greater things and it’s these little touches that have allowed Skyline the privilege of a big...

Skyline Interviews – Joshua Cordes and Liam O’Donnell
While it felt like just the other day you were reading about this sci-fi, alien-invasion film, the odd fact is, that it really did come up out of nowhere. Directed by the Brothers Strause, who are known only for their Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem, the film came about while they were doing their other day time job – visual effects work at Hydraulx (here). Joshua Cordes and Liam O’Donnell wrote the script together after a spark of an idea in between their visual effects work on Avatar and Iron Man 2, with no studio involvement. Killer Film chats with them about Skyline, opening November 12th from Universal, about the nature of the production, that wrapped up all in a year’s time.

Jon: Could you talk about this short trailer the Brothers Strause created a year ago, its inception and how it led to you two writing the script?

Joshua Cordes...

Exclusive: Strause Bros. On the FX and Spectacle of Skyline
With their sour experience on Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem still haunting them, the Strause brothers - Colin and Greg - aim to properly demonstrate their filmmaking skills with Skyline , the self-financed, creature-filled alien invasion film written by Joshua Cordes and Liam O'Donnell. The film opens this Friday and, in addition to Shock's previous conversations with the siblings on the set and in their Santa Monica based FX house Hydraulx , I caught up to the siblings to talk specifically about the visual FX process, the design work and bringing "spectacle" back to filmmaking. Shock Till You Drop: Let's talk about influences. Not for this film in particular, but what set you on the path for what you two do now. Colin Strause: The biggest one is Aliens ,...

Sci-Fi Thriller 'Skyline' Gets New Clips, Sequel Is In the Works
In anticipation of the impending release of "Skyline", Rogue Pictures has debuted two new clips for the movie. Both videos reveal the tension after aliens begin their invasion in Los Angeles, with one snippet showing a group of people running away from a giant creature and the other clip featuring a helicopter being attacked by the monster.

While the movie is yet to open in U.S. theaters until November 12, directors Colin and Greg Strause have talked about a possibility of making a follow-up. Speaking to Film School Rejects, the filmmaker duo say the sequel will be made if the first film "makes a 'tenth' of what a normal event movie does." In the meantime, they already have 45 page treatment for the sequel.

"Skyline" focuses on a band of survivors who plans to go as far as they can from the city before the entire population is taken from the Earth.
